Excellence Punta Cana
Ranked #15 of 114 Hotels in Punta Cana

We spent late December at Excellence Punta Cana. This was our third time at this property, and we have also stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres. It always feels like we are Coming Home when we stay here. Everyone is so kind and pleasant, and we feel like we are amongst friends. As usual, the property was pristine, the rooms were spotless, and the ocean and pool absolutely beautiful. The staff, however, is the most beautiful part of Excellence Punta Cana. The Mexican restaurant, Agave, made this New Year's Eve the best ever. Miguel and Dolores went out of their way to make us feel like the two most important people in the world! We will never forget their kindness. Roberto was also extremely nice. Pure relaxation, wonderful food, gorgeous grounds, live music to dance to before and after the nightly shows, staff who are like friends...What else could you want for a vacation?

Room Tip: We always stay in the Excellence Club and have never been disappointed with any of our rooms!

This by far was the best vacation so far , and it has been a couple of years since we were there , the positives for us were the staff , the food , and the age , we liked the older style of the place . You can't swim in the ocean the rip tide is unreal , a man lost his life while we were there and another was having problems getting back to shore , my advise is to listen to the life guard , we still had a fantastic time though and will likely go back soon

Room Tip: We had a suite on the south side ,very quiet and good access to the pool and bar.

We just visited Excellence Punta Cana for a good friends wedding Jan 23-27 and I felt the need to provide a review given some of the negative reviews on the site. Granted all people have different perspectives going into it but from my perspective this place was amazing. I have broken the review down by feature so you can make your own decisions.

Airport- the airport in DR is rustic, and doesn't have airconditioning so expect to be warm when you arrive. I recommend no jeans as I made that mistake and was sweating within minutes. You also have to buy a visitor card which is $10 USD per person and no one told us that going in, so we found it to be confusing. The airport is a cluster and very crowded. Also, Excellence does not provide a bus or shuttle to the hotel, so plan on catching a local taxi at $70 total for 2 people.

Hotel- Overall the hotel is very nice. Some of the buildings could use some updating but the hotel is beautiful. The room we were in was a junior suite with a pool view on the first floor. We could walk out our door and get into the pool which was great. Room includes mini bar which is constantly stocked. Activities include tennis, pool, putt putt golf, as well as activities on the beach such as volleyball. The beach is amazing as well and there is always plenty of seating. The staff will also bring you drinks on the beach. The room is nice, the shower was fantastic. I don't know what others were saying about getting hot water, we never had an issue. Only warning is the bed is hard, but I find from other international traveling that this is common.

Food- The food is so so. Some restaurants were delicious such as Spice, but others were quite mediocre. Also the beef in the DR is not like US beef, so I wouldn't expect the same quality. Overall though what we ate was good. The drinks were delicious and choices plentiful so no complaints on that aspect.

Service- Some of the staff were very friendly and helpful while others were quite snippy and not helpful. Overall staff was nice. My only warning is upon checkout, we had an issue with the front desk because I had charged some services to the room and when checking out, they didn't want to take my credit card but did want for me to pull out cash, which seemed shady. I refused and said take my credit card or I will not pay. We heard this from a few other people so be aware when charging anything to your room. Or better yet, don't.

Overall the trip exceeded our expectations and we felt relaxed, pampered and quite relaxed at Excellence which was what we were looking for in an all inclusive vacaction. AS a side note my friend got married there and the ceremony as well as the reception were beautiful and organized.

Room Tip: Rooms by the smaller pool seem to be quieter. We were in building 4 and have no complaints.

This was our first time to the Dominican Republic. What can I say, beautiful beaches, beautiful weather, friendly people. Our normal vacation spot is Mexico. This will probably change! We booked the hotel and flight separately and directly. Our ground transportation was through Coco Travel, on line and it was flawless. We booked at the group travel rate but had our own van both ways. The driver was early on the day of our departure if we wanted to leave any earlier.
When we arrived at the resort we were greeted with friendly smiles and a glass of champagne. We were quickly escorted to our rooms and were happily surprised to see an anniversary banner on our door along with fresh fruit and a bucket of champagne waiting for us. We had a garden room in building 4 on the second floor. It was peaceful and overlooked stunning gardens with a fountain that provided the perfect background noise. Buildings in the pool area and swim up bar area would have been far too noisy for us when we wanted down time. The ocean was refreshing , warm and fun! Beach service was fantastic and we never had to go up and get a drink. We tipped the staff for service, not much to us, but meant a lot to them. We saw people who did not tip at all and they still received the same courteous and fast service. The food was great for an all inclusive and not having to make a reservation for restaurants was such a bonus! There were so many places to chose from and the service was top notch! The French Restaurant was our favourite. On the night of the pool party we had gotten out late. We went to the Lobster House where a familiar waiter, Samuel, escorted us to a table with rose petals, champagne and surf and turf. Very lovely.
The only thing I would change about this resort is the 80's music in some of the restaurants. It needs to be updated and more up beat. I would recommend this resorts to couples travel on their own and in groups. We will definitely be back to the Dominican Rebublic

Room Tip: Buildings 3, 4, and 5 are quiet. Near the sports bar with american domestic beer and imported beer.

“Welcome home.” These were the first words we heard when we stepped out of our bus from the airport. Then two glasses of crisp, cool Champagne were put in our hands. Our stay at the Excellence was off to a perfect start. This was our first visit to an all-inclusive hotel . And we were very impressed by the high standard. So impressed, in fact, that we are already planning a return visit in April to celebrate our third wedding anniversary. First the service. On the beach we never had to wait for a drink. Ask for a bottle of water as well, and our friendly server would produce an ice-cold bottle from his bellybag. Play bingo by the pool – organized by the high-energy Kassandra – and along would come a woman with a tray full of exotic cocktails. We stayed in a supposedly-modest garden suite which turned out to be gorgeous. The bed was a super-king and very comfortable. We didn’t use the jetted whirlpool bathtub, but it was there anyway. We didn’t drink the premium liquor supplied in the room either, but we could have. Here’s a story that sums up our experience. At the manager’s party for guests, we happened to mention that we had unfortunately missed the Dominican dinner on the beach. The next day we were invited to our own private Dominican lunch by the pool. A heart shaped display of rose petals made it perfect. Yes, we’re coming back. We only managed to visit six of the nine available restaurants – and they were all excellent. Yes that sums up the Excellence – simply excellent.

Room Tip: The garden suites are quiet and close to everything.

This is a beautiful resort. The beach is amazing, the pool is sensational and the service is outstanding. The restaurants are very good (Most are not quite outstanding, but very good). The French restaurant (Isabella) is especially good. The Asian restaurant is also excellent. The others are very good. The rooms are very nice. We had a Garden View room which I actually recommend. The pool side rooms have a nice view of the pool and ocean but have no privacy. The garden view side is quiet and secluded and has a lovely ambiance. Spent much time in the hammock there just reading and enjoying the peace and quiet.

We recently returned from 5 days at Excellence Punta Cana. We had two rooms.... an ocean front jr. suite for my husband and myself and a garden view jr. suite for our two adult daughters. The rooms are nice but do have a slight musty odor. We kept our sliding door open, our daughters did not as then their air conditioning would not work and their room became too hot.

The view from our room was fabulous. We enjoyed the ocean with a clean beach and the 3 pool areas are all beautiful. We all had a massage one day and everyone agreed the massages were great. The pre-massage complimentary hydrotherapy pools were really relaxing. There is something to please everyone. We barely scratched the surface as it was our intent to simply spend relaxing time together.

The staff could not have been more anxious to please. They were polite, attentive and friendly.
We stayed 5 nights and were pleased with having a choice of 9 different restaurants. The food, while not gourmet, was fine.

I would like to add we were at this resort about 5 years ago with a very large group of friends. Two totally different experiences (one with a large group and one with our adult daughters) and both times enjoyed ourselves.

I find the musty smell in some of the older Caribbean resorts is somewhat common. I will say, if we had not been able to keep our door open it would have been a problem for me..... but with the door open it was just fine.

We had a nice trip and would return again.

Room Tip: room 2209 has a lovely, lovely view and easy access to all.
