“Wonderful Resort”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

My wife and I just got back from an amazing 7 night stay at the Excellence Punta Cana. We did the upgrade to the Excellence Club. Not really sure if it was worth it but really don t care because the place was so impresive. The workers everywhere were awsome the grounds well maintaine. The only problem we had was the electric shut off a couple time but it coverd the whole area. One other thing is I relize this is an adults only resort but maybe they could some how be more discreat with channel 96 but we are all adults and don t have to watch it either. I truley would suggest the Chex Isabell restraunt to eat at but I could not complain about the others. The night shows were very impressive. Wet several wouderful people from around the world. If we can we will return. The nice thing is we didn t have to deal childern not that I don t like them I have 4 wonderful grandchildren but it nice to not have kids splashing in the pools. The size of the resort is really nice it is not to big that you need golf carts to take you around.

Room Tip: There is really not a bad room

I have to say that I've been using TripAdvisor to help plan vacations for awhile and this is my first review. I have to start with this property because it is absolutely amazing! My boyfriend and I went there in Feb of 2012 and had our best vacation to date.

Check-in was a breeze - we were offered champagne upon entering the property. Our first room didn't have the greatest view and we were immediately upgraded to an oceanfront property. Every restaurant is great - our favorite was the Asian-inspired Spice. The drinks at the pool and beach were all amazing. The best is the frozen cocktail where the bartender literally uses a machete to cut open a coconut in front.

I loved the interaction with the different wildlife around the resort. From the flamingos to the parrots.. we also did the horseback riding on the beach and the dune buggey tour. I can't say enough good things about this resort, the staff and accommodations.. Definitely worth the extra $$

It is now four weeks Since we have returned from our 5th holiday at the Excellence Punta Cana. We visited on the 21st of January until the 4 th of February. We had an amazing two weeks holiday, as expected.
We take a private taxi from the airport to the excellence, as my wife doesn't travel we'll on buses. and the roads arent that good. The journey takes approx fifty minutes.
On arrival at the hotel we were met by our old friend, Darvin one of the bell boys, he is a charming young man and always willing to help.we were presented with A glass of sparkling wine, and a refresher towel.
we were then led to the reception.
We were greeted at reception by marlon, Edwin ,Dario, Pauline, and Nicholas, friends we have known from past visits here.they are all very friendly and jovial characters.
We were shown to our room, which had a stunning garden view, which I prefer.
We ate in every restaurant at the excellence, all were very good but our favourite was the Spice, with excellent service from Jesus and his attentive team. And not forgetting Libett the lovely hostess.
I do get a little tired of reading people's complaints that the food doesn't taste like at home , of course it doesn't your in the Dominican Republic. However we were really impressed with the food, and we're lucky enough to meet the executive chief, and he made us some special dishes, which were amazing. (Many thanks)
We like to dine early , so we dont miss the shows
Before or after dinner you can relax to the music by Domingo, the saxophonist. A very talented musician. Then it's show time . Here at the hotel they put on some fantastic shows, the circus, Michael Jackson, and the Dominican night,
At the rear of the hotel, they have the gardens. These gardens have ponds, with lots of wildlife, herons ,egrets, woodpeckers, flamingos, ducks. Being an armature photographer, I spend a lot of time here. I have attached a few photos.Just to show you whats there.
There are so many staff we have met at the excellence over the years, and you always find them the same way, (smiling happy helpfull people).
From Linda Bauer who is head concierge, she is a gem, nothing is ever a problem to her. She loves her job and loves even more to make your holiday the best ever. Another person here is mr Roberto , public relations he is the man along with Linda , go the extra mile to make your stay there perfect.his assistant Yanilka is being taught by the master, and it shows, she is always there with a lovely smile.
There isn't-one person here who won't go that extra mile for you.
I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to many country's over the years, and have never met friendlier people than the staff at the excellence PUNTA Cana.
Mr oriol albach has carried on the fantastic running of this hotel since being appointed general manager.he too is always on hand to make it a perfect holiday.
We can't wait untill we return next January.and also meet up with our Canadian friends, who also like us fell in love with the excellence hotel and staff.

We stayed at Excellence in late January. I'm just now getting around to writing my review. You see, I was shell shocked during my visit...

First off, kudos to the hotel staff for being friendly, attentive, etc. In addition, the physical plant was immaculate. It had great infrastructure for a Dominican property.

The major hiccup on our trip were our numerous encounters with a rowdy crew that seemed to always be underfoot. They called themselves the Wasted Clap Traps or some such nonsense. I think they were from Southern Europe. This group was noticeably younger than most of the guests here. They spent the days revelling in imbibery and vulgarity. The women (and the men) paraded around in scantily clad outfits that would make a porn star blush!

There was lewd dancing, kissing in public, and most of them went topless for the entire day. The men were even worse...I've never met a gigolo, but I'm sure that's what they were. The men wore thongs that left nothing to the imagination. One of them even had a g-string-bow tie all in one outfit that lacked of any discretion or decency. I think he was a local because the workers all called him Jor-Hay. After carousing at the pool all day, they would slink back to their dens, only to re-appear for dinner, refreshed for more shenanigans. Sigh...

I came to this resort to re-kindle my romance with my husband, not to have him spend all day gawking at bared breasts! When I caught him humming the song these rabble rousers had just been singing at the pool, I had had enough.

The hotel was very pro-active. They asked the people to behave better, or they would have to leave. Things quieted down. When we checked out, the management informed us that the group would no longer be allowed back at Excellence. And in my book, that make the resort live up to its name: Excellent. I just hate I had to go through such a stressful situation.

i was married her... for no extra cost might I add... and graded to the VIP area with imported american alcohol, private dining, private beach lounging, and free wifi! Simply awe inspiring place! The grounds are imaculate! I only go where there is a swim up bar.... well i didnt even go to the swim up bar but once because the servers were constantly coming up to me while I swam and lounged to bring ME drinks, bacon wrapped shrimp, pizza, exotic meats! There were more beds/counches on the beach than lounge chairs! The pool was beautifully kept. Some resorts require ALOT of walking just to get to thge lobby or a restaurant, not this one... minimal walking -- considering it is a HUGE resort. The nightly shows were ehhhhhh... except the miccheal Jackson tribute, that was pretty cool! But you should definateyl go to the underground cave club ---club literally inside a cave if you wanna go out for a night. The beach is pristine... i refused to edit my pictures, because the water was so beautiful without it. The room was great -- I had the junior swim up suite with a beach view and a pool view and a private entrance into the pool with private lounge chairs only for ME! Jacuzzi tub was relaxing. Maid service was excellent .. even left incense burning... every day we had a little surprise waiting for us. wanna chill one day... walk the paths in the front of the hotel and be surprised to see tucans, flamingos, swans.. all just hanging out. The tucan even talked to me! The service was impeccable! I will go again and again and again! Now... as far as location, it was about an hours drive from attractions and main shopping... although it seemed most of the other hotels we dropped/picked up at were about the same distance.

Room Tip: most every room is a good room... those to the far right of the hotel had the longest and less sceni...

My wife and I went to Excellence for our Honeymoon. We could not have been happier with our choice of resort. The staff were friendly and very helpful; the resort is beautiful; the food was great with a really good mix of options - from buffet to fine dining; and the drinks were plentiful and well made - no skimping on the alcohol and, beside the delicious local rum, were made all with name brands. The rooms were spacious, clean and very comfortable. The whole resort was spotless, in fact.

The Honeymoon package includes a romance dinner, which was fabulous, and also complimentary spa packages for each of us, which we didn't use. We took the VIP upgrade, but it may not be worth it for many. The VIP beach area is much nicer and has waiter service. Otherwise, we did not see the value in the VIP lounge nor the upgraded in-room bar or room service menu - we were out of our room most of the time anyway. If you plan to stick to the pool - go with a regular room.

We also heard that people with pool/sea views were disturbed by the noise from the pool. People start gathering down there after about 7am so, if you wan to sleep in, you may be frustrated. The pools all close at 6pm, though, so there is no late night craziness (which is reserved for the bars in the main buildings away from the guest rooms). We did find the other guests to be fun and friendly, and no incidents of anyone getting out of control. New arrivals tended to be more overzealous, before they learn (quickly) to relax and enjoy the resort.

Regarding the loungers at the pool and at the beach, we found that people put out their towels very early in the morning to reserve the best ones. If you want shade and/or a decent location, you have to get down there before 7am - that's when the early-risers stake their claim before grabbing breakfast. To be fair, the morning sun is gorgeous, and much less intense than later in the day, so it's a great time to be by the water. Even in late-February, the afternoon sun will burn through Factor 30 sunblock in no time (making a shady spot a near-necessity).

The only downsides to Excellence are geographical. It's a fairly long transfer from the airport - an hour if you have a personal taxi, longer if you take the bus service - although the main road being built should cut that time dramatically (but it's nowhere near being finished). The beach and water are perfect, except that it's on the Atlantic side of the island resulting in strong currents that meant the red "no swimming" flag was flying every day of our stay. Brave souls (like me) ventured into the ocean, but I am a very strong swimmer and I can tell you that the undertow is very dangerous. The resort does have a huge pool area (inc. a fun swim-up bar) that flows through it for those who want to cool off in calm waters.

We did only one excursion: the Canopy zip-line tour. The zip-lining was lots of fun, and the Canopy facility struck us a safe and friendly. However, they tell you that it's only 45 minutes away when, in fact, it's over 2 hours away - the last hour of which is over hellacious unmade mountain roads. The open truck they transport you in is uncomfortable on the flat roads - up the mountains, it was brutal. I would suggest taking such trips only if you are totally set on the activity. (We were told that the snorkling trips are worse, as they have to take you all the way across to the Caribbean side of the island to get into calmer waters).

From talking with other guests who have stayed at various resorts in Punta Cana, they are virtually unanimous in saying that Excellence is the best. I haven't stayed anywhere else, but I can say that I think it would be hard for anyone to beat Excellence for the quality of experience - especially at the price.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms with a pool view (noise). VIP upgrade of limited value.

We went to Excellence for our honeymoon after getting married at another resort in Punta Cana that was kid-friendly. The service from the start was over the top but that did not last long. The resort seemed to be short staffed as service was slow to get us a drink and they often ran out of dry, clean towels at the pool. We were upgraded to the honeymoon package which was nice as well as the Excellence club which was worth the extra cost. The service in the Excellence Club was superior to the rest of the resort. The food was very good with Asian being our favorite. The beach is in an area all to itself and was very clean and crystal blue water. The waves were significantly larger here than the other side of the beach. It is about 1 hour from the airport and is most rough, rocky road. We would definitely return.

Room Tip: We did not see the standard room however the upgrade for the honeymoon package in the Excellence Clu...
