Well we chose the Catalonia due to a great experience last year at the Catalonia Playa Maroma in the Mayan. There are many wonderful qualities about this resort & a couple of negatives which could use correcting. The food - the buffets offer a great variety of food which is freshly prepared in front of you i.e. pizza, fish, pasta, steaks. We enjoyed the al la carts by taking other vacationers recommendations. We enjoyed the New York Steak at the Rodeo Steakhouse & the Fajitas at the Mexican. We ate at each of them twice. We did enjoy the Japanese Restaurant, but we expected better entertainment from the chef.(I think we got a dud as others were thoroughly entertained by theirs). The Italian was o.k. Our normal was to go for supper at 6:30 when the buffet and al la carts opened. At this time we found the service excellent. Twice we went later but found service slower. Love the idea of no reservations required. Drinks were great but powerful. Room was spacious with excellent maid service & mini-bar was always full. Beach was beautiful, however the towel game was in full force with people reserving chairs at both the beach & pool. We never had a problem finding chairs on the beach but not always a palapa. Nightly entertainment is o.k. but the entertainment staff should be commended as they work extremely hard at making sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Most nights we watched the show from the lobby bar which offered excellent service. Grounds are beautifully maintained. Cons - the resort should definitely invest in some better quality pillows! Secondly we've never experienced beach vendors inside a resort, get rid of them.

Our agent called us and advised us of a last minute deal to the Catalonia Punta Cana...we took it and were off within a couple of days...a two week stay. We had stayed at other Catalonia's before and always had a good experience, and since they tend to be very similar, we more or less knew what to expect. Not over the top fancy, but still classy enough to make you feel special. We went in with realistic expectations, especially given the pretty attractive price we paid.

Ok, so here is our take on things. Arrived at Punta Cana airport around 5:00 pm...along with about 6 other jets at same time...was a bit hectic to say the least...we just chilled out and remembered we were on vacation for two weeks....and laughed as we watched others freak out with the crowds and not knowing where to go...quite comical actually....as if they were running to catch the last bus out or something....people...TIP:: just relax and go with the flow.

We arrived at Hotel with 15 minutes of getting on our Nolitours bus...Catalonia is the first hotel to get off from airport....meaning no time wasted travelling from hotel to hotel dropping people off. Downside is that if jets landing and taking off is bothersome to you, there are a lot of them throughout the day that seem right on top of you.

Check in was smooth and professional, well spoken english, and very friendly staff. Beware of vacation Club agents posing as Hotel staff who are more than courteous, but eventually want to sign you up for the "presentation"...
Room was better than expected in terms of size and amenities....was more like a suite style...with lots of space, nice sized balcony and big bathroom with double tub.
Yes, it was a bit dated, and showed its age with some cracking tile and some peeling silicone here and there...but bothered us not a bit. It was clean and A/C worked good, had lots of hot water, and 80 channels of TV...it was just fine...(who watches TV in Punta Cana anyway?)

Now, this is a large resort, and you will do a lot of walking to get place to place. The main area is lobby, restaurants, bars, theatre...then a long series of buildings which are the hotel rooms, then the pool area, then the beach...however, when you walk, its like walking in a garden, with lots of trees, and vegetation, along with water areas with lots of birds and fish. So, lots of walking, but it is very enjoyable.

Theatre shows were ok...not high end...mostly the animation staff working with some dancers and doing the various theme nights...but it was entertaining none the less, and always attracted big crowds. There is always a lot going on here...something the Catalonia chain is known for...whether beach volleyball, aerobics, various pool competitions, or evening bartending shows...its full of life all the time.

Food, well, contrary to some reviews, we found the buffets very good...nice variety, and quite tasteful....better than average compared to resorts we have stayed at in Mexico. The al la cartes were very good....no reservations, and virtually no waiting, other than for Japanese, but it is worth it.
Kudos to the Pizzeria by the pool...we watched this young man come in early in the morning with all his supplies every day, and literally cook pizza inside the hut on an open oven all day until night, everyday for two weeks...we were hot in bathing suits and by the pool...can't imagine how he felt in there for 12 hours each day...
Overall, the restaurant staff are friendly and courteous....although in buffet, they are busy taking care of us demanding travellers....they did great.
Drinks were ok....some were a bit blah, but they make the most common ones in bulk and put them in the slurpie machines to save time...what can you expect....the smaller lounge type bars in the evening mix really good drinks, fresh from scratch.

Disco, we did go a few times...was a lot of fun...typically resort disco...mix of 80's set, then local latino set, then whatever after that...no chairs to sit down, so plan to dance if you are going. The animation staff added a lot of fun to the evening when they stayed for a while.

A few things...one, we always felt safe, and in no harm...whether walking in resort, or even when we left resort for a bit to walk to the local town. Keep in mind that it is not located in a town like some resorts, so it is basically, the hotel, and a road / highway from there...
Food and water...we never got sick, so this is good...were there 2 weeks.

My wife did get a few mystery mosquito bites that she said were itchy...although we didn't see mosquitos at any point.

We upgraded to the "privileged" section for our last few nights. Rooms are basically the same although a bit closer to beach and pool, with a few extra niceties inside, and a bit of refreshing to them. You also get a few extra "privileges" which are ice, including nicer recliners on the beach (dedicated area) and entry to a very nice a la carte...plus other things. Worthwhile for sure if its in your budget....

Our weather, which of course has nothing to do with resort was amazing...1 - 10 minute shower while we were having dinner one evening...that was it...absolutely beautiful for two weeks. and virtually no wind...much less windy than Mayan of Mexico. The water at the Catalonia is very calm, no waves due to sandbar way out in the distance, and sand stays cool to the touch, even when in the sun all day, quite unique.

As Canadians, we seemed to be in the minority...not a big deal, just letting you know...mostly European and Russian...we got to know many of them and they were very nice and friendly. lots of great volleyball games with the Russians each day.

All in all, it was a great vacation...after two weeks, we were not bored, not sick of food, and really enjoyed each day there.......we have stayed at higher star ranked resorts , but frankly, this hotel had everything we could want , including some really nice shopping on site, as well as a Casino...
For the money paid, it has great value....if you are looking for lots of marble and ultra high end...go some place else and spend more money...rather than coming to the Catalonia for less $$ and then expecting an ultra high end resort.

Special thanks to the staff who were always friendly, and special appreciation to Rosa and
Minerva in Privilege guest services, who took very good care of us....right to check out.

The big question, would we recommend?...or would we go back?....and we would say most definitely to both!

Room Tip: If you like to be close to pool or beach, ask for a room in this area...if you want to be closer to...

Had a great week at the resort from Feb 9-16th. Most of the staff were friendly and the food was fair to good in most of the places. The beach was nice with a huge sandbar the extended out quite a distance. Had some snorkelling at some coral just off shore to the privileged side of the beach that were pretty lively. Rooms were clean and maids did a good job.

Couple items that would have made the stay nicer would to have additional staff at the bars as we often had to wait for drinks. Not sure why the Italian restaurant did not serve coffee. Imagine it was to get you out faster to serve the next set of patrons. Shower was very small and water pressure was pretty much non existent and needed to almost hug the wall to get wet. The bath tub in the washroom appeared to be an after thought and did not really appear safe to use as getting in and out would have been hazardous.

Onsite medical was unusual to see but, glad we did not have to use it.

By far the biggest drawback was the dive shop. Staff appeared to care less about you and that they were doing a favour to even speak to you. The boat is not a dive boat and lacks even a ladder to get in and out. Staff could use a course in how to be civil to guests. Would not recommend using the dive shop at all.

Dear polarbear_315:

Thank you for your review about Catalonia Bávaro.

Is good to know you had a nice stay. Regarding some shortcomings like the shower, I would like to let you know that we are working on a project to improve this area. About the coffee, we have a policy to not serve coffee in any of our theme restaurants, we want our guest to enjoy our main bars where we do offer it.

Regarding the Dive shop, this is a company we have a partnership with, I'm really sorry to hear that you did not receive the service you deserve. We will take care to pass your comments to their managers.

It is very gratifying to know that none of this avoided you from enjoying our wonderful hotel.

We hope to welcome you back in the future.

My wife and I have winter vacationed in Mexico 14 times now, so we decided to go to Punta Cana for a change. We went with our two teenage sons and our son's girlfriend. We had two rooms. We asked for two double beds in ours, but got a king size bed and a canoe for our 15 year old to sleep in, placed in the corner of the room behind the sofa. We tried to move, but the hotel was booked to capacity.
The grounds are beautiful, the beach is awesome, and the layout of the resort is excellent. We've stayed at the Catalonia Yucatan in the Mayan, so we knew what to expect, BUT, what a real disappointment.
Hotel time-share employees, yes Catalonia uniformed vultures, waiting at buffet entrances and lobby areas pitching Catalonia. We have experienced them in every resort, but NOT like this.
Here too, you must play the towel game. If you don't mark the scarce loungers by 7 am, no go. ZERO poolside or beach drink service, which we never experienced before.
Room maids coming between 9 am to 5 pm, never the same, so you were always afraid to go to your room, bathroom towels were hard to come by, fridge restocking was disappointing.
It was a culture shock meeting many from over the pond. We are not used to meeting such rude, self-centered, arrogant people. Not all of them, of course, but we know who they are as we are given coloured bracelets as you register at the hotel to identify the country you're from. If you personally don't like dealing with rude tourists, who would as soon walk on your infant than step a foot to the side when you meet them on the sidewalk, don't bother, as the hotel caters to THEM to come, and they do, in droves.
Food was good but a dirty plate could sit on your table for 20 minutes before someone would come to pick it up. Food was plenty, we had four A la carte restaurants, did them all.
We will be heading back to Mexico next year; and not to a Catalonia.

I have never written a review for a hotel in all my life traveling, and I have traveled to a lot of places. This was my first trip to the Dominican Republic and my fiance and I decided to get married at this resort and also spend our honeymoon here. Well what a major disappointment it was.

Our first impression when we arrived was that the resort itself was upscale with a beautiful golf course and front lobby. We were quickly greeted by the front desk staff and given our complimentary welcome drink. Since we had upgraded to the privilege package, we were quickly brought to the privilege check in office and driven to our room.

And this is where the illusion of a 5 star resort was shattered. Our room was very dated and smelled musty. There were huge bugs on the floor, and our entire bodies were itchy from all the bed bug bites. The ceiling air conditioner leaked, the drain in our tub did not work, the hot water took about 5 minutes to warm up and the water pressure failed constantly. The lights on our patio did not work and although we were able to put the security latch on our front door, we had to struggle to unlock the latch to get out of our room. In fact, I had to get out from the back patio once because we could not even open our front door. The cleaning service was horrible and they failed to clean our room twice during our 14 day stay. The mini-bar was also not always restocked daily and the towels, shampoo and conditioner were not restocked daily. We had to call the front desk to get fresh linen twice. The coffee maker was also not cleaned. After using the coffee maker one morning, I found that the cleaning staff had restocked the coffee and water, but when I wanted to make another pot of coffee the next day, found that they had failed to clean the coffee maker and pot (found the coffee filter from the day before still in the machine and the left over coffee in the pot). Needless to say, that was the last pot of coffee I made for our entire stay. I also wanted to catch some news on the winter Olympics in the evening, only to find that the television had very poor reception. The wi-fi was also touch and go and kept dropping all the time.

Now for the wedding and honeymoon part of our trip, although the ceremony and decoration was well organized, we were not able to have our romantic wedding night dinner on the beach on the actual day of our wedding and could only schedule it for 2 days after the wedding. We also schedule to have our breakfast in bed the morning after the ceremony delivered at 10h30am, but it was never delivered. On the night we were supposed to have our romantic wedding dinner on the beach, we showed up at the restaurant only to be told that they had no knowledge of a wedding dinner being scheduled for that evening. The staff at the restaurant did, however, offer that we eat at the buffet. When I tried to explain that we had organized the dinner with the resort’s wedding coordinator for that evening, they insisted that here was no wedding dinner booked for the evening. We stormed out of the restaurant and me and my wife, who was wearing high heel shoes and dressed in a beautiful night gown, had to walk over 10 minutes to the privilege office to complain. After complaining to the staff at the privilege office, I was told that there was a misunderstanding and that they had the wedding dinner reservation and table ready. They drove us back to the beach restaurant and then told us to sit down and wait for them to set-up the table on the beach (which according to the front desk, was already supposed to be set-up). After almost a 2 hour delay, we finally got to sit down and enjoy our diner, which I will admit was very good.

But the service at the other restaurants was absolutely terrible. It took me and my wife forever to get any wine, while other people who showed up after us would immediately get served. On one evening, I ordered wine and waited 15 minutes and still we still did not get our drinks. I waived down the waiter and he immediately looked at us and said “Oh yes, the wine, I will be right back with it”. Again, we waited for 15 minutes and never got our drinks. I actually walked out of the restaurant and made my way to the lobby bar, ordered our drinks, and walked back to the restaurant with the drinks I got myself. Many times we felt that we were not offered water or coffee at meal times.

And forget getting money out of the ATM …. It just doesn’t accept any cards. I had to wait in line 30 minutes plus at the onsite bank office to get any money out. And the people working at the bank have no customer service whatsoever and are inconsistent with their policies. On one day, they accepted only my driver’s license as proof of identity when withdrawing money. Then on my last day at the resort, I needed to withdraw money before going to the airport. We had about 2 hours left before our airport transfer so we wanted to spend some nice relaxing time on the beach before leaving. I ended up standing in line for over 30 minutes waiting to get service at the bank, only to be told that I needed my passport to withdraw money. When I told the person that I had withdrawn money with only my driver’s license as ID 2 days earlier, he said HE only accepted a passport for ID. So we ended up wasting our valuable last hours at the resort running back to our room (about a 25 minute walk there and back to the bank) and staying in line once again for 30 minutes to withdraw money.

And to truly make our stay truly unforgettable when we left the resort, the driver for our airport transfer ended up almost knocking me out when he slammed the back door of the van on my head.

In summary, please pay attention to the one star reviews. I did not believe all the bad things written about this resort until I experienced it first hand for 14 days. Stay away from this resort and go somewhere else. I know I will next time.

Room Tip: A good room would be somewhere at another resort

This place was a disappointment. We spent 5 days there and just got back last night so I wanted to get this review going before I forgot the details. I read SO SO many Trip Advisor reviews before choosing a resort for our winter escape, and I can't believe I didn't see this in the reviews:

This resort (Catalonia Bavaro) is completely connected with Royal Bavaro. There are multiple paths back and forth between the resorts. The Royal Bavaro people have two ridiculously nicer pools and much better lounge chairs. They are allowed to come over to Catalonia Bavaro and drink, eat, enjoy the nighttime entertainment etc. but the people at this resort were not allowed to go over there. We tried! My husband looked it up and said that Royal Catalonia costs $30 more per night... this is DEFINITELY worth it if you don't want to feel shut out of the MUCH better side of the resort. It is insulting, and made me feel like a second class citizen which was not was I was expecting especially since we have paid to upgrade to Privilege AND had the Honeymoon package (although thankfully this was not actually my honeymoon!).

Catalonia Bavaro has the WORST pool I have ever seen, and the D.R. was my 21st country visited. It is peeling paint everywhere, has the worst layout, and the bricks around the pool are sticky and nasty. They need to start over. The pool was a huge disappointment, and was the reason I didn't choose the Royal Bavaro (Royal doesn't have a swim up bar). The yellow chairs you see in the pictures are mostly all tinged with black now and look dirty. They are the worst beach chairs I have seen at a resort.

Luckily we had the nicer Privilege chairs and beach beds. The beach is truly stunning and is by FAR the best feature of the resort. It is SO different than Cancun which is all high rises and resorts. These two combined resorts (again, should just be one darn resort!!) are the only thing around, at least that we saw. I got up early the first morning to save chairs on the Privilege beach, but realized later that it was unnecessary. I spent the rest of the mornings sleeping in and we always got great chairs since the Privilege beach wasn't as full.

Another huge disappointment was the people bothering us constantly. They want to sell you motorbike tours, dolphin tours, scuba, you name it. There were also the resort sales people who literally waited like hawks by the restaurants to get you coming in or out. We probably said no to salespeople 100+ times in 5 days. It grates on you.

There are multiple people picking up cups on the beach and by the pool, but we only got 1 person 1 time to bring us drinks in the Privilege section of the beach. I think that would be an easy upgrade for the hotel to make, especially if you are paying more for Privilege. Tell one of the cup collectors that he is upgraded to drink getter, and he would make a mountain of tip money!

The drinks were fairly strong... not amazing, but okay. The food was disappointing.. the Japanese was pretty good, the steak place served the toughest steak I have ever had, and the Italian place was nothing special.

As for the Honeymoon package, it includes the other highlight of the trip besides the beach: the lobster dinner on the beach with your own waiter. Our dinner was 2+ hours and was delightful. We felt special since we were the only ones on the beach! Another part of the package was 2 30-minute massages. My massage was ok, but my husband said she basically just gently rubbed his back the whole time, not actually massaging at all! It also included a bottle of champagne which was a nice way to start our trip. We also had access to a nice bar in the middle of a pond. It was not included with regular packages, but we enjoyed drinking there! It was a bit fancier! There is a casino and a little shopping mall that we enjoyed a bit too.

The housekeeping was very poor. Twice we didn't have our refrigerator restocked and I had to call down for it. Once we didn't have our toiletries (shampoo namely) restocked and I had to call down and wait for that. Very irritating. This should be a given-- restock the rooms! Our room even had a honeymoon banner hanging on it the whole time we were there... I thought we would get nicer treatment from housekeeping, but no such luck. Our room ACTUALLY had a view of the ocean-- Room 114-- since we were in the Privilege section. We felt lucky to be so close to the beach! They have upgraded the pillows which was needed according to other reviews.

My husband and I speak Spanish, so we enjoyed using it here. The resort is huge and involves a lot of walking which could be tough for folks who are out of shape. It is a very international crowd (Russian, Canadian, French, Spaniards) and I would guess that the majority were not Americans. I liked the international flavor there, but was irritated by SO many saved chairs and no one sitting in them! I would not come back, though if a friend asked, I would recommend the Royal Catalonia right next door.

Room Tip: If you upgrade to Privilege, you will be close to the beach, though not necessarily with a beach vie...
