“Great hotel, great staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

We stayed at Catalonia Bavaro from 9/10/2013 until 16/10/2013 and had a great time!
Like so many people, we checked tripadvisor while choosing our hotel. Despite the sometimes negative reviews (1 out of 10 i guess), we decided to go here.

I will review a couple of things, let me start with:

1. The staff

The staff will do anything to make your holiday wonderful, they are motivated and 99 % of them always carry a big smile. We decided to thank them by giving tips on a regular basis.
As far as tips go, they earn circa 250$ per month. So when you give them a tip of a few dollars, it's more than enough.

2. The rooms

We stayed in a non-privileged room (room 2525). On arrival in the room, we were pleasantly surprised. The air conditioning was working just fine, our bath and shower were clean, and our bed had impeccable linen.
The room stayed this clean for the whole journey, a special thanks to the staff for that!

3. The hotel grounds

One word. Amazing. The hotel has a beautiful atmosphere, from the sea to the entrance. By having so many different plants, you don't really have the feeling that you're in a big resort. It feels and looks very 'cosy' !
The pool (includiing pool bar) was very clean, no leaves or anything in it. Another thing for us (as a young couple), is that we don't want to go 'lay towels' to reserve a seat in at the pool. Luckily, the pool is big enough and there are enough seats for everyone to have a perfect choice where to lay.
The beach was amazing, everything you expect from a beach at the Domenican Republic and more! (see pictures). Again, plenty of space here.

4. The food

The hotel has 2 buffets (1 by the lobby, 1 by the sea) and 4 restaurants (1 Mexican, 1 Steak House, 1 Japanese and 1 Italian).
As far as buffets go, this was a good one. I have 2 simple rules for a buffet: cold food should be cold, hot food should be hot (and of course tasty!). This buffet was just like that.
Plenty of choice at anytime of the day (breakfast, lunch and diner), with tasty fresh fruit and vegetables.
Before we went here we read a few bad things about the buffet, but we quickly realized this: if you go to a buffet expecting 3-star-Michelin-graded food, you're gonna have a bad time.
The food is tasty, hygienic and there is enough for everyone.

We tried 2 of the 4 restaurants, the Italian and Steak House. Both were great, but the Steak House was just that little bit better for us. But that could have been because we were starved to death by our excursion :)

5. Activities on the hotel grounds

You can do lots of things at this hotel, especially if you have an all-inclusive formula. You can go sailing with a catamaran, kayaking, snorkeling, etc... for free!
The animation is awesome, and they offer a really big variety of shows.

We want to conclude our review by thanking the staff of the hotel (Leonilda in particular!) and a little bit of advice:
Do not focus on the negative reviews. As with all things in life, negative people are everywhere to be found. But ask yourself this; does a almost perfect hotel suddenly becomes a horrible hotel because some people say it is? ... Exactly, it doesn't.

Enjoy your stay at the Catalonia Bavaro! Oh, and be careful with the rum, it's the real stuff there :)

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2525, and it was great.

Been visiting Dominican Republic since 1993.Stayed at lots of different resorts.Visited Catalonia beach resort first in January 2012.It was idyllic. We could not fault it.This is what decided us to return on October 1st for another 2 weeks..What a mistake. It was chaos from arriving. After getting up at 4.30 am.we finally arrived at 9 o clock pm our time.Despite there being only the two of us dropped off we were told no room yet available and sent to the bar for a drink. This happened a further 3 times well over an hour before being allocated a room.Dying for a coffee we decided to put coffee machine on,first mistake,it didnt work. After unpacking and travel dirty and weary decided to have a bath, mistake number two .the plug in the bath didnt close to stop water escaping.,had to have showers for a fortnight in a shower so small and dingy you could hardly turn round.Day two in the evening turned on t.v. to get news headlines
third mistake ,t.v. didnt work. Finally brought another after 11p.m. when we had just gone to bed stiill feeling effects of travelling. The bedroom linen was a farce. One day we had a sheet and a bed cover, the next day only a sheet, then the bed cover would reappear for a couple of days .This was the same with the the towels.Absolute chaos. We had no water ,coffee ,milk ect, for 4 days despite phining housekeeping and had to go complain at reception in the end.The worst thing was the food.both myself and my husband were ill the whole time.Imodium had no effect. We were not the only ones, others were affected.and had to visit the pharmacy to buy further drugs to combat it.The food in the buffet was disgusting.round the sides were containers of stewed concoctions left hours.Stewed goat one night, stewed ham knuckles another which were exactly that, just knuckle in thick rind floating in a greasy goo,I cannot tell you how bad it was.Yes they was supposed to be a carvery station but the meat was always raw and inedible. The one night the meat smelt delicious it was roast pig we went down at 8pm only to be told the pig was all gone only fish remained.even though they were supposed to serve until 10pm.Every thing was cold and half raw,The beach restaurant was better, the cooked food always fresh cooked and hot but the restaurant was open sided and the salad bar was open and the bird were openly feeding on the food and of course leaving their droppings behind. The mind boggles at the disease left behind. The saving grace is the beautiful grounds and the lovely staff always smiling and hard working. The entertainment staff are great and put on some super shows.I have not written this report lightly. infact it is the first time I have ever done it but cant stress how bad it was.Having paid over £1000 each for what should have been a lovely break only to be a nightmare.BY=y the way neither of us drank the coconut cocktails so they cant blame over indulgance.I do not know what has gone wrong at the Catalonia but something
as happened in the last 20 months to make it go from such extremes,Take my advice as a seasoned Dominica visitor and give it a wide berth.,

Stayed 14 nights. We had privileged room which I think is worth the extra money for all the benefits that came with it. Rooms cleaned everyday and fridge re stocked daily. Tried all the a la carte restaurants Japanese and steak house where the best. The main buffet restaurant had plenty of choice. Only critism is the bar staff at main bar very slow to serve you. Would definitely come back

The staff at the Catalonia Bavaro was very friendly, especially our "Favorito Barman" from the Pure Bar in the middle of the property, Sandy Ortiz! If you are staying at the resort, be sure to stop by and say "Hola!" to Sandy...he may even make you a Dominican Flag!

Room Tip: Make sure you go preferred.

My girlfriend, her sister and I came to the Catalonia Bavaro because of the (mostly) good reviews on TripAdvisor. After staying for a week, we cannot understand why they werent all perfect reviews. The food was good, the views and amenities were better, but what really made the trip special for us was the staff, especially Spaghetti and Anna. They were always smiling and making us laugh. Always had fun activities planned and were very personable. As someone who works in customer service myself, I always appreciate the little things like friendly staff that make things stand out. We would 100% recommend this resort to anyone and will definitely be back in the future (as long as Spaghetti and Anna are working there).

Room Tip: All the rooms are great!

I was skeptical after reading other reviews, but dont listen to them. This was an amazing, beautful place. Staff was out very early into wee hours of the night working the grounds. The entire staff was very friendly and spoke English well. I wanted to send a shout out to Anna(chocolate) and all the other entertainers for a great vacation. I was worried about getting sick before I arrived..not the case. The food was great and it would be your own fault if you left hungry or thirsty. We meet some great people there. We will definitely be back!!! Thank you Catalonia for a great 1st anniversary trip!!!!

First of all after reading all the reviews I was concerned and considered changing my hotel. The hotel grounds are beautiful . The rooms are dated, but the cost is great for what you're paying for.

I would say the rooms are equivalent to a motel six, but larger. It has a large jacuzzi style tub for two without the jets. The resort is split into two sections regular and the privilege side(upgrade).. It also has a royal side for couples which is a upgrade to the main side. They have access to both sides. Basically you can upgrade to meet your specific needs.

I ate at two speciality restaurants which you don't have to make reservations for. It's a first come situation. The Mexican restaurant wasn't good. The Japanese restaurant was good. The buffet restaurants has enough variety for everyone. You can't leave your food unattended because the birds are waiting to take your food. The buffets are open air restaurants where you sit to eat.

I found the staff to be friendly and helpful when asked. Some people just don't get it; sometimes you have to show yourself friendly first...

The only excursion we took was the Mega truck Safari. It was a all day trip, which you to do and see a little of everything. Dominican schools, houses, family, tobacco making, chocolate Coffee, horseback riding, and the Maco beach... The beach is really pretty, but not enough time spent there. The vendors are real pushy there. If you don't want to be bothered just tell them no and stop communication with them and keep moving... Look for discounts on trip advisor and online discounts before you arrive or online when you arrive.

All in all we had a great time at the resort. We may consider upgrading to a nicer side or just come back here... We didn't stay in our room much, just to sleep...

One more thing.. The beach is nice and calm. Some days more see weeds than other days. They are cleaning the beach and grounds daily. The Maco beach had no sea weeds, but had more waves... There is a shopping area toward the royal side of the beach, you can barter there.. We got some good deals. The hotel prices are much higher just like at any resort. You pay for convenience.

The Mosquitos have enjoyed my sweet skin. I have the proof all over my legs. I brought spray but forgot to use it a day or two. They are really bad. Bring your on spray and cortisone to sooth your skin..

Room Tip: Villa 20, is a excellent location. Close to pool, 24 hr restaurant and beach buffet. 2nd floor or a...
