“Excellente entertainment!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2013

We have just returned from a week long vacation at Secrets Royal Beach and it was super excellente as the staff would say! The hotel was lovely and the surroundings were like a scene from a movie. However what really made the trip special was the fabulous entertainment team who were absolutely brilliant. Akon was super charming, very funny and brilliant at getting you involved in everything, Milky Way was a great joker and all round nice guy, Eddie Murphy - one of the best entertainment hosts we have seen and not for getting the lovely and sweet Karen! The team worked brilliantly together and managed to get us doing things we never normally would but in a fun and engaging way. It is fair to say that they made the whole holiday for us and ensured this was one of the best holidays we have ever had.

Thanks guys - you are all stars!

It is also worth mentioning all the other staff who could not have done more for us and ensured we had an all round superb time!

Lauren and Tina from England! x

My wife and I just returned (11/26) following a great 7 day stay (Room 5235). The beach is prefect and we enjoyed a long walk each morning after breakfast. The check-in and out were as smooth as possible as reception personnel were efficient, pleasant and helpful. Indeed, that can be said of the entire staff, who without exception, were as accomodating, friendly, efficient and would do anything to enhance your stay. We found the food on the Secrets side far better than NOW, despite their a la carte choices. Having stayed at Secrets in Puerto Vallarta and Montego Bay, a great difference in the authenticity of the ethnic meals was most evident.
We had our share of grilled lobsters and saw no point in paying $32 and up for the advertised ones.
The entertainment staff are among the most talented and hard working we've seen during our 35 years of travel. We called them, " Energizer bunnies" for their endless enthusiasm and vigour.
The Barracuda bar has the very best servers there are ! Carlos, Reuben, Jefrey, Dallin and all the others. We were treated like royalty everywhere and a special "Hola" to Greisy and Marimar.
Also, all the girls and guys in La Riviera who tolerated my attempts at Spanish !
Miguel (Bar), Milky Way, Eddie Murphy - muchas gracias, mis amigos nuevos !
We hope to return one day. Thanks again, Secrets !

going home tomorrow and will be sad to go the catchword is "excellenty" and this described the royal beach from the food they serve in the restaurant's to the use of branded drinks and especially the staff who make the place what it is and would recommend it to anyone who wants a lovely holiday / honeymoon. as they have made our honeymoon something special and we will never forget that.

We flew on a flight from Chicago - it was a direct flight so not too much time had been wasted sitting in an airport. It was about a 10 to 15 minute drive to the resort and the guide through Apple was very welcoming and loved to joke around. Once you arrive to the resort the greet you with a could towel, a glass of champagne and a quick check-in. They will then take you and your bags to the rooms right away.
The rooms are large and nice. The rooms and the entire resort are kept very clean. The staff there does a wonderful job of keeping the resort looking excellent. The only complaints I have are of the bathroom which I really liked it just needed more lighting for when you are doing your make-up and it only has one outlet. Otherwise they are large with a double vanity, a large walk-in shower and a separate room for the toilet. The rooms are kept very cool and have a ceiling fan.
The resort is pretty large and very beautiful. They have long paths and multiple bridges that go over the lazy river and the pool. The pool and lazy river are both well kept. The pool is more of the party area with the pool bar and the lazy river is more quite and relaxing. The lazy river doesn't really have a current pushing you along with would have been nice.
It seems anywhere you are located at the resort you are constantly waited on and are well taken care of by the staff. If you choose to not sit by the bar by either the pool or on the beach, no worries because there are waiters that continuously walk around and are ready to take your orders. They of course have a lot of fruity drinks and little beer unless you like El Presidente. Some of the bars had cold Budweiser but it would have been nice if Bed Light or Coors Light was offered. The best drinks are the Belleni especially if you get it from the lobby bar and then the Ruben Special (this is not on the menu and is also know as the RED/GREEN drink) it is very good.
The beach is very easy to access and is beautiful. The sand is a soft white and the water is gorgeous. There are constant waiters going around to serve you and there is a quieter area and then a more active area with volleyball, yoga and stretching and the Entertainment staff will always have something for you to do.
The restaurants there are very clean and over all I would say the food was good. When traveling out the of the country to some place like this you never know what you are going to get but here there is at least one restaurant that you are going to be able to find that you will like. It is nice being able to go over to the other resort whenever you like. The resort seems a little more on the party side where this one is more about relaxing so to be able to go back and forth is nice. They also do a nice job of only letting the Secrets people onto the Secrets side.

I would say the best thing about this resort is the staff. They are all very pleasant people who try to help you and keep you happy. They are there to wait on you hand and foot and seem happy to be able to be there.
There are a couple of staff members that really stand out.
Milky Way with the Entertainment staff is the best. He is so very friendly and is always happy.
Angel who is a waiter around the pool is awesome. Definitely one of my favorites! He loves to joke around and always very quick to take and get your order. Carlo at the pool bar is another great employee. He loves to joke around as well and is very quick with making the drinks.
TThe only other complaint I would have is that the WIFI is not free. You pay enough for the trip that they could atleast make that free for guests.

Over all the party I went with which was my husband, myself and 2 other couple had a wonderful trip and would recommend this resort to others. The resort is great and the people are amazing.

My sister and I traveled November 2-9, 2013. We take a trip every year and every year we try to beat the last vacation in terms of quality. We had heard such great things about Secrets that we were willing to bite the bullet and pay more...a lot more than we have in the past. In fairness to the hotel, we did book a swim-out room which was a good part of the increase in cost. The service at this resort was wonderful...from the person who cleaned our room to the service on the beach. Three people that I want to mention are Angel, Rovison and Zulami.

The beach was awesome with plenty of umbrellas to go around...towels were not always available so we got in the habit of changing them out at the end of the day.

After seeing the location of the Preferred area, we were glad that we did not stay there. It was between the Secrets side and the Now Larimar side which is family orientated and VERY loud. I don't know how that was peaceful or worth the extra money.

The rooms were quite dark and it was hard to see when you were choosing clothes to wear. They could use a ceiling light in the sitting area. The beds and pillows were probably the best that we've ever had on a vacation.

As for the wi-fi or lack of....we have stayed in much less expensive places that had free wi-fi in the lobby. Here you have to go to the business office and pay for it unless you are in the preferred area. The wi-fi was down for the better part of our trip...I felt sorry for people who purchased the weeklong package. As it was, we purchased a package of minutes that you have to use in the business center and all at one time. I could not sign on and they blamed it on Yahoo and wanted me to purchase another package. My sister was pretty insistent and they gave us more minutes.

As to the food.....IF you stayed on the Secrets side the food was pretty good...not great but good. Unfortunately most of the restaurants are on the Now Larimar side and they were not very good. As all buffets, it was quite repetitive and it was probably the smallest buffet (on the Secrets side) that I have ever seen. We did utilize the room service and they were quick and efficient.

We did not use any of the spa services so I can't comment on the quality only that the prices seemed very high.

All in all, we had a great time as we always do though I'm not sure I will be staying at a Secrets anytime soon unless it was a dedicated Secrets resort and not one shared like here with the Now Larimar.

Enjoyed yet another wonderful vacation at the Secrets Royal Beach in Punta Cana from November 9 to 16, 2013. The weather was perfect every day. This was our sixth consecutive time to return to this resort. We really appreciate the cleanliness of the rooms and the resort in general, the excellent food, the entertainment, swimming in the canal and the ocean and walking on the beautiful white sand beaches. Above all, the service and friendliness of the staff from the managers to reception, housekeeping, cooks, servers, butlers, etc. was exemplary. They strive to ensure your holiday is wonderful. Special thanks to Omar, Erika, Juan Manuel, Nelis, Carmen, Yakolein, Josefina, Nitalia, Topacio, Angel and Ramona (to name a few) for going out of their way to make us feel welcome and cared for. We also wish to thank the Chefs and staff of Capers, Oceana and Seaside for delicious meals, service and ambiance at these restaurants. What great experiences we had.

We would highly recommend this resort to anyone. As a repeat customer, going back to Secrets Royal Beach it is like going to a home away from home. Looking forward to vacationing with you in 2014. Thanks - The Hamiltons

Room Tip: We prefer a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor on the left-hand side of the canal (looking from the Lobby...

We arrived at the hotel about 4:00pm after a long flight from the UK and our party of 9 were given a nice cold glass of sparkling wine. The reception area was disappointing and certainly did not have the WOW factor. We were not accompanied to our room but the bell man pointed to the block our room was in and left us to find the room ourselves. My sister was celebrating a special birthday during our stay and we were delighted when she and other members of our party were upgraded to Preferred Club Rooms. It was a pity 5 members of our family were upgraded and 4 were not but it did not present too many problems.

Room - 4258
On initially entering the room there was a musty smell and after contacting Reception we were advised to light the incense sticks provided. I'm pleased to say the musty smell had gone the next day. The room was a generous size and very clean with a large comfortable bed and plenty of sunlight during the day. There were lots of storage cupboards/drawers and wardrobe hanging space. There was also a sitting area with table. The fridge was fully stocked and continued to be restocked every day of our stay by a happy young man. The balcony overlooked the lazy river and we had a partial view of the sea through the beautiful palm trees. An in-room safe, hairdryer, coffee making facilities and TV with a couple of English speaking channels were also provided and all were in working order. AC in the room was excellent and very quiet. We were pleased with the room and often returned to find the maid had created swans wearing little hats. The evening turn down service was equally artistic. Make sure you fill your Jacuzzi right up before switching on the jets, they are quite powerful and even though the water covered the jets it still squirted right out of the balcony, fortunately there was nobody sunbathing below. My one complaint regarding the room is the inadequate lighting and it was far too dark of an evening.

Bathroom
Massive walk-in shower with good water pressure. Two sinks (always a winner); Separate toilet; Shaving Mirror. Lots of toiletries including SPF15 suntan lotion.

Resort
We were based on the Adults only Secrets side of the hotel but could visit the Now Larimar side. The grounds are tended by hard working gardeners and it was a pleasure to stroll around after breakfast and enjoy the gardens. There is a Spa and Gym and although we viewed both we did not use these facilities. We played 10 pin bowling on 2 occasions and the staff made our visits even more enjoyable. We only visited the casino once because the room was miserable and lacked any sort of atmosphere. There are also a number of shops which sell beach clothes, sun hats/glasses and bags and lots of items you may have forgotten to pack and apart from suntan lotion prices are reasonable. We loved the lazy river which was relaxing to travel around on the blue floaters. The 2 main pools with their swim-up bars were lots of fun and games, exercises and sports all took place there. You never waited long to be offered a drink from the many smiling waiters. The public toilets in the restaurants were always spotlessly clean and looked as if the cleaner had just finished cleaning them.

Beach
There appeared to be plenty of sun beds and umbrellas available but the Bavaro beach was a bit disappointing due to the seaweed. We still enjoyed taking long walks along the beach with the palm trees bending down to the sea, it was just not as pristine as on other Caribbean Islands.

Food/Restaurants
We were a party of 9 and during our 2 week stay we dined in most restaurants. Our favourite a la Carte restaurants for dinner were the Seaside Grill which served the very best steaks and the Capers Italian restaurant. The other a la carte restaurants were a bit ‘hit and miss’ and it depended on what food you ordered. Some of the group were delighted with their meal whilst others were not as pleased. Service was always 10 out 10. For breakfast and lunch you could not better the choice and quality of food than at the La Riviera buffet restaurant. It was the best buffet food we have had in the Caribbean and we looked forward to eating our breakfast on the outside terrace, sipping a Mimosa and looking out at the beautiful blue sky and swaying palm trees. We especially enjoyed the smoothies made by Nellie and our delicious fried eggs and omelettes made by another special young lady. We also ate lunch at the barbecue on the beach side grill where the chef would cook the chicken and burgers to perfection.

Alcohol/cocktails
The Presidente beer was always cold and refreshing but the cocktails were very sugary and not to my taste and I mostly drank Bombay Sapphire gin & tonic or sparkling wine with premium quality Cointreau as a night cap, but occasionally I was served the local Cointreau which was a waste because I did not drink it.

Entertainment
The entertainment team were brilliant. This is not Las Vegas, and I thought all the shows were good fun. My husband even got to be the Magician’s assistant on one evening. There was also a guest singer Chris Blizzard who gave an excellent performance. During some evening entertainment there were no seats available outside and possibly guests from Now Larimar were coming to the Secrets side and it is unfair for guests at Secrets not to be able to sit and enjoy the evening entertainment. I think Management should consider coloured wrist bands to denote which hotel guests are staying at. I have stayed at other all inclusive hotels and have no objection to wearing a wrist band.

Staff
Without a doubt the well trained staff give this hotel its 5* kudos. They all work extremely hard, in the restaurants, bars, hotel rooms, gardens, reception, guest relations and will give you a smile or an ‘Excellente’ as they pass you. Tips are not expected but we were happy to tip little and often for the excellent service we received.

Trips
Besides the helicopter trip along the coast we also visited the island of Saona which was a full day and good fun travelling on a speed boat to the private beach on the Island and back on a catamaran. We also took a trip to the capital city of Santo Domingo. We stopped off at the Los Tres Ojos caves which contained stalactites and stalagmites and a boat pulls you along to the second lake. We then stopped outside the Columbus Lighthouse but did not go inside. Santo Domingo is quite a distance away and takes a few hours to reach but unlike Havana there are only a few historical sites. Other members of the party played golf, went horse riding, swimming with dolphins, and riding beach buggies and thoroughly enjoyed all activities.

Problem
On the day of my sister’s birthday celebration we surprised her with a helicopter ride which was brilliant and I would definitely recommend it. For the evening we had pre-booked a show cooking table at the Spice restaurant and ordered a birthday cake from the hotel unfortunately things went very wrong and the table was double booked!! and we could not be accommodated at the Spice restaurant during the rest of the evening of her birthday. We were all very upset and disappointed and could not believe the main reason for being on holiday was to celebrate my sister’s birthday and now there was no table available. Also to make things worse they had delivered the wrong cake.

Fortunately guest relations stepped in and found another venue and arranged for the cake and other items to be transferred to the Capers Italian restaurant. We were greeted by the manager of the restaurant with sparkling wine and I'm pleased to say the birthday celebrations went very well. The food and service were excellent and all the staff joined in and sang ‘Happy Birthday’.

The next day after a meeting with the Guest Relations Manager the family were invited to a VIP evening at the Wine Cellar. This is a small intimate restaurant which holds about 20 people. Wow it was special! We had a 6 course gourmet dinner including lobster, steak and delicious fish which the chef prepared specially for our party and the finale was beautifully decorated plates wishing Veronica a VIP birthday plus another birthday cake. It was an excellent evening which made amends for the fiasco on the night of her birthday.

Summary
We can all find fault if we look for it and although this hotel is not perfect I would recommend it and have given it 5 stars because of the quality food and excellent service from the staff plus its good value for money, I paid the same amount to stay all inclusive in Cancun a number of years ago.
