“Great Vacations with Great Friends.”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

I just returned from a week long vacation with 22 close friends. We had all stayed at all inclusive resorts at one time or another, so we thought we knew what to expect. Were we surprised. We were a little worried about the food, since we live in ny....but i must say, there were no complaints. Was everyone happy about every meal? ....not exactly, but all in all the food was very good. We were skeptical about capers the italian restaurant, but the pasta dishes were very good and so was the italian bread....so we all walked out pretty satisfied. We hit every restaurant there...and while we liked some better (spice) than others(oceana) we never starved. We had a problem finding a good alcoholic drink at first....but once we tried different bars, we found that the Now Larimar lobby bar made the best ones. Carlos at the secrets lobby bar was also very friendly and fun, but all bars closed at 12 am except the bar in the disco which didn't have top shelf.
The resort was beautifully maintained. The rooms, grounds, and buffet were always clean. The beach grill was by far the best!!!! The staff was extremely friendly and accomodating. We dealt with Diana Martinez, who really went above and beyond to make our trip truly memorable. Thank you Diana!! Milky way at the pool was probably one of themost entertaining people in the whole resort.
We were a big group, and we were always together so we made our own party wherever we went, but this resort is definitely more on the quieter side. The NOW is definitely more lively if you want more entertainment by the pool but the flip side is lots of kids.
The beds were really comfy and the room came with robes, so if you don't find a robe in your room, call the front desk and request one.
All in all....it was a great trip with great friends and Secrets made it more special.

Room Tip: building 5, odd number, 2nd floor facing the garden was a nice room.

Overall we had a very good 2 week holiday at this hotel, upon reflection there are a number of issues that resulted in an overall feeling of slight disappointment.
Let’s start with the positives.
The first is the exceptional service provided by the restaurant, beach service and plaza service staff. This was truly impressive with drink refills before you had finished and very attentive staff. We have stayed at a number of higher end resorts and this was consistently far superior to anything we had previously experienced. Well done to all the Secrets staff.
Secondly the entertainment team in particular Akon and Chevron. They get the balance spot on between encouraging you to participate and not being too much of a pain. More importantly they were really nice people who engaged in interesting conversations and made us feel engaged with the activities.
The beach is lovely, although I can see how some people might be disappointed by how noisy and busy it is. For the most part we liked that there was always something to see but it was not a peaceful Caribbean beach and after a while you longed for a bit more peace and quiet. The sea is fairly choppy, nothing major but just worth mentioning.
The food at Secrets is very good. We ate at all the Secrets restaurants and the food was very good in each of them. We were particularly pleased with the buffet restaurant as sitting outside and getting very attentive drinks service made it feel unlike the normal buffet noisy atmosphere. The lunchtime grill on the beach, especially the wonderful rib eye steaks were a real pleasure! All those people who claim to be “foodies” and criticise the food should really focus on going to a hotel that is specific to being a “foodie” rather than a value for money all inclusive. You pay your money and take your choice, for an all-inclusive the food cannot be faulted.
The plaza is a very nice location for evening drinks but if the weather is poor there is very little to offer in the way of bars.
The rooms were very good with everything you could want and very comfortable beds. We also found being on the top floor an advantage as it was quieter and unlike some hotels the sound proofing between rooms worked well! The rooms, like the rest of the hotel were very well maintained and cleaned.
OK so now onto the areas that left some disappointment.
The problem with the food is the limited restaurants on the Secrets side and you just cannot compare the Now side. The contrast in service and standards between Now and Secrets is both good and bad. On the one hand I would be upset to spend a lot more money at Secrets and experience the same for a lower cost. On the other hand it hugely reduces the choices available.
Having only 4 restaurants on the Secrets side is further compounded by one being sushi and another being seafood oriented. There are other limited meat and vegetarian choices but it just seems daft. As I said earlier the Now side is really not worth the visit, we ate at the French restaurant and the Asian and were underwhelmed on both occasions with both food and service, so we decided not to venture over to the “dark side” again!.
The lobby area is very unimpressive and gives a very poor first impression and starts things off on a negative. You will soon discover that the rest of the hotel is not like this but, as the saying goes, first impressions count!
While the beach is lovely the walks either side of the hotel do not offer up a peaceful, secluded and romantic stroll as this area is pretty much back to back hotels. I had researched this and while I knew that there were lots of hotels I did not realise just how many and how frequent they would be. With the stall holders and excursion people out in force I would recommend an early walk at about 8, to avoid some of these issues.
We also found the lay-out to be a bit limited. There are no outside bars other than the plaza which is situated at the other end of the resort from the beach and restaurants. Not having a bar in the evening by the beach is strange and once again choice on the Secrets side was limited.
We used the Spa utilizing their BOGOF offer. The massages were very good but the 60 minute hydrotherapy session was very disorganised and disjointed and in way compares to the Spa service we have received at various Excellence resorts in the past. If we had paid full price I would have been complaining!
I suppose that the answer to some of these points would be to go to the Now side, but when you pay more and choose adults only you do it for a reason. I guess this is ultimately what caused our disappointment and impacted on the overall rating I have given, which is a shame as the service provided by the staff was fantastic.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a nice hotel and we had a good time, it just felt that it could have been better and we ended up feeling that other hotels have offered us more for our particular likes and dislikes.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms are quieter and facing away from the resort affords greater privacy.

We have stayed at several all inclusive resorts in Mexico, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic. The following is our review of the Secrets Royal Beach:
PROS -
1. Beautiful rooms, very clean and well maintained.
2. Grounds are as beautiful as any we've seen.
3. Wide beach with soft white sand.
4. The resort personnel were exceptional. Always willing to please.

CONS -
1. Food is typical all inclusive quality. Nothing special.
2. Did not like having to go to the NOW family resort for variety on dinner meals.
3. Drinks are ok. Same as at any other all inclusive.
4. No wristbands, but others coming into resort that did not pay for the adults only.
5. Cannot walk the beach without being constantly harassed by vendors
6. Beach was ok, but there was issue with sea grass and debris along water edge.
7. Never left the resort or drank any water, so the drinks or food cause us issues
and now recovering on Cipro.

We will probably not return to Secrets Royal Beach. We found the Iberostar Grand Bavaro to a better value.

Room Tip: We would suggest pool view, 3rd floor, nearer to beach.

Stayed 7 days (2nd ~ 9th of July 2013) Garden suite. At check in we we given a 1st floor room in building 5 facing the service road. Not what we requested. Took several visits to the front lobby to get our room changed. In building 5 request an odd numbered room 2nd or 3rd floor (Building 4 get an even numbered room) Room numbers are Building/Floor/Room ie: 5135 would be building 5 first floor room 35. Lower numbered rooms are close to the lobby and entertainment Higher numbered rooms get you closer to the lazy river pool and restaurants.

PROS
All inclusive means no surprise bar tab at the end of your vacation.
The Lazy River pool.
Very comfortable bed.
Varied enough selection of dining options to make it through the week. Would get repetitive with a longer stay.
Decent enough options on the drinks. Not top shelf but not bad. House wines are a watery White and Merlot.
Very clean and well maintained property.
The beach BBQ lobster dinner (Friday nights $42 PP less the $ 40 coupon = $ 44 per couple) Worth it!!!

CONS
Lack of English speaking wait staff, made simple request more of a challenge.
Nightly entertainment was very amateurish. The hotel entertainers were good but the outside entertainment left a lot to be desired.
Towels what is so hard about keeping the rooms stocked with clean towels?? At the pool area you could only get 2 towels (we had a group of 7)
Floats Bring your own. The hotel supply is very limited.
The beach. Don't expect much. This is a public beach with lots of traffic in the water. Don't even bother bringing snorkeling equipment unless you plan on booking an excursion.

All in all it was a good trip. I would recommend the Jamaica facility over the SRB.

Room Tip: Get 2nd or 3rd floor rooms for privacy Bldg 5 odd numbered room Bldg 4 even numbered room. Bring yo...

We had stayed at a NOW resort in Mexico a few years ago and were super impressed with the level of service. When choosing our accommodations for our honeymoon we were looking for a similar vibe, all-inclusive, and a beautiful setting. We chose Secrets Royal Beach in Punta Cana and were not disappointed. Very friendly staff! They made the trip. The entertainment team kept everything fun- always something to do if we felt like getting up from the lounge chairs or out of the ocean. The room was great. We got the Ocean View Suite- couldn't see much of the ocean but we were close too all the restaurants and right at the pool. We stayed on the "adult-only" side- which just means no kids running around the pool which was nice. We still got to use all of the amenities at the NOW side including restaurants, bars, the disco, pool tables, etc.
Food was hit or miss. The beach grill was a great option- freshly grilled fish, burgers, shrimp, chicken daily. The buffet was great. Lots of options. We also really liked the Italian restaurant and the Seafood. The spa was well worth it! We got a couples massage in our package. Along with it you get use of the outdoor spa area and hero-therapy circuit. Again, very friendly and attentive staff. I went back for a facial I loved it so much!
The beach was very clean, beautiful sandy shores.
With our Honeymoon Package we got a bottle of champagne, mimosas and breakfast one morning, a romantic dinner on the beach, and a couples massage! Great deal for celebrations or just a much needed getaway!
