“Wonderful time....with some drawbacks”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2013

This was our first time in the DR and our first time staying at a secrets resort. Overall we were very happy with our stay. We went for our honeymoon and when we arrived everything was waiting for us. After we got settled into our wonderful room overlooking the ocean (and after having a long day of traveling) we wanted to go swimming in their wonderful lazy river but we were told there was no swimming after 7 due to cleaning. This was a bummer--Maybe even having it open till 10 or 11--7 was way to early!! But the pool was awesome!! Room service was good but not a ton of choices but it did come fast and all the servers were great!! All the food and restaurants of the resort were good and service was good, our only complaint would be that the servers were not very happy to give us more ice and especially soda. Every time we asked for either it took at least 20minutes at all restaurants. The service at the pool and beach were excellent and all the bars were great. Special thanks to Angel--he was our guy and made sure we always had a drink!!! We loved that we could use the Now Lamiar restaurants and pools and they did an excellent job of making sure only our hotel patrons were allowed in our pools (ie no kids). There were many options for food which was nice. And the place was immaculately cleaned! They always stocked your mini fridge which was great, and the beds were super comfy! The entertainment was good too and they had many options for all ages! The 2 excursions we went on were great except everyone who was working wanted money and were very rude about getting a tip. I don't like to be on vacation and workers who I am already paying hound you for a tip. This was not the case at the resort although it is a little confusing if you are supposed to tip the staff at an all inclusive, some people did and others didn't! We tipped for excellent service! We also used the Spa which was amazing!

This was our first experience at a chain all inclusive and we would highly recommend it!!

Room Tip: Just an FYI to get a seat at the pool you need to put a towel down by 8am otherwise you are out of l...

From the moment you land in the airport, you are welcomed and quickly escorted to the resort. Check-in went smoothly and we were drive to our rooms (garden view). I would recommend selecting a room facing the pool or definitely the ocean! We ate breakfast and lunch at the buffet, but the dinners were planned by the couple. One dinner was a bar-b-que on the beach and the reception was held in the club.

The resort is adults only which is nice. I have to commend the staff: each and every one of them did alll they could to make our vacation such a wonderful memory!

Room Tip: Garden room is OK, but select a pool or ocean front room.

My wife and I along with another couple stayed here in May and really enjoyed ourselves.

The good: great beach, great staff (especially Medrano at the beachside grill), good shows
The ok: the food was hit and miss. The steak at the grill was excellent, the buffet (can't believe I am saying this about a buffet) was also excellent but the french was mediocre, the italian OK, and the 'pay extra' lobster dinner was terrible. Talking to others, most agreed that the buffet was so good you might as well just go there. We like to change up our meals and as a result were a little disappointed. Breakfasts by the beach were very good as they again mix up the buffet regularly and what a great setting.

Lunch at the beach side grill was excellent everyday. They mix up their bbq and if you were nice (tip) some delicious shrimp would show up. We looked forward to lunch every day.

The beach is huge and we played some volleyball. The staff was great and made sure everyone enjoyed themselves.

All in all, would go back for sure.

Room Tip: Had a room facing outside and it was fine.

We have been going to punta the last four years...stayed at Iberostar Bavaro for the first three and this time Secrets. Secrets is much more modern the lazy river is awesome, but the beach is nice but I think there was too much activity with the water sports...beach drink service was good the sand was good but I liked the other one better. The pool at secrets was top notch and we loved the lazy river that's where relaxing came in and we meet Angel and Junior...top notch employees funny polite and made you feel special. The service all over was great from room service bellhop and front desk, maids, restaurant servers AND even at now larimar is was good . Food at the buffet was very good as well as room service. We ate at seaside grill good, mercure above good ,spice not so good I think it was our chef...blue water grill not very good and the Mexican tominardo was fair, they tried to Americanize the menu at these places but still needs work.I can say breakfast was great and Mercure we ate there three times was the best...I don't like buffet for dinner on vacation so I can't tell you how it was..lunch at buffet was good.Drinks were good and if you asked they brought you sky vodka ammeretto ...top self liquor ...tropical drinks were good. There are a lot more Americans here. The casino I had a blast it needs more slots...we did good came out ahead....watched the basketball finals in now plaza was fun. This place was a good cross between crazy fun at now and the relaxing at secrets was very quick walk ....was more elegant than Bavaro but somehow I missed the star team and the lobby bar at Bavaro that place has majic at night....the casino there has more slots and the lobby is wow...secrets needs a better lobby bar we enjoyed nows moments lobby bar.All in all the rooms at royal beach better the service better the pool better the food better I loved the seating eating outside on the patio at secrets...would I go back to secrets without a doubt...it was better.I wished someone would of told us about secrets preferred will check that out.Our rooms pool view together on same floor as we asked beds very comfortable and clean clean clean....rooms at Bavaro need up dating badly...just go have fun.......English was very understood by most. No problems with check in or out was so smooth.

Our experience at Secrets was amazing! Our room was spacious, there were lots of restaurant options and the food was delicious! The staff at the resort made our stay wonderful. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We enjoyed the beautiful beach and pool areas as well as the activities that were planned each day. I have to give a huge thank you to the entertainment team - Usher, Akon, Chevron, New York, and Fidel - for keeping us dancing, laughing, and fully entertained on our trip. We would highly recommend this beautiful and relaxing resort to all of our friends.

Secrets Hotel in Punta Cana is excellent and as long as you stay away from their vacation club staff you will fully enjoy your time there. If anyone approaches you about coupons, IF you spend an hour and a half hearing about Secrets Vacation places, JUST SAY NO! First, you will spend more time than they originally quote. Second, any coupons they offer are not worth it.
We chose coupons towards a $42.00 lobster dinner. Yes, this “all inclusive” hotel offers a lobster dinner on the beach for $42.00 per person. After the coupons from the vacation club, it still cost us a total of $14. None of this was worth it. The dinner was on the beach, which was nice but any and all of their restaurants are more comfortable. Before dinner drinks, were not offered. We were told the bar was closed. A bottle of champagne was offered – which we do not drink - so we sent it back unopened. We were (somehow?), able to order glasses of wine with dinner. The lobster was tasty and all you can eat. However, we learned the next day that the buffet in the dining room (right off the beach) also offered unlimited lobster – at no charge to the diners. The side dishes, we were offered, were limited and boring. We skipped dessert since it was unappetizing. Therefore, we spent $14 on a meal that we could have eaten, off the beach, at no extra cost.
Other coupons offered were for dollars off a spa treatment. We did not choose this but other guests told us there were hidden charges and it still cost a lot. Also, $10 coupons were offered towards purchases of bottles of wine. At first we thought glasses of wine must not be offered, since they charged $30 and up for bottles of wine. We later found out, you can order as many glasses of wine you want, at no extra charge. Therefore, if you enjoy wine with dinner and not fussy about particular wines – order glasses. If you enjoy time at the spa, go and pay for what you want and are willing to pay. At Secrets you get what you pay for and the coupons are not worth it.
Staying at Secrets you not only have the choice of restaurants at your hotel, but you are also welcome at the restaurants located in the hotel next door (NOW). We found every restaurant served delicious food and plenty of it. The breakfast buffet at Secrets was unbelievable. All types of omelets, fluffy pancakes, waffles, eggs any style, fruits, caviar, smoked salmon – I can go on and on but I will just say bring your appetite. The beach grill that was opened every afternoon for lunch also was excellent. Hamburgers, chicken, hot dogs and shrimp were all cooked to perfection with a great barbecue flavor. The staff at each restaurant were friendly and served food quickly and were always accommodating. Don’t concern yourself about the dress code. They never restricted anyone from dining.
The hotel is pretty. Landscaping is beautiful and well kept. The rooms are clean, large and the frig is always filled with bottled water and sodas. Stay away from the hotel rooms closest to the lobby or the main pool - if you want a quiet room. Our room was near the lobby and although we faced the service road we could still hear the evening entertainment. (This kept us up the first night we were there, since we were exhausted being up from 4 am traveling.) The best rooms are on the first floor in the middle of the hotel with your sliding glass door leading out to the lazy river. You have your own lounge chairs, therefore you are guaranteed always to have a place to relax. Most guests, not by the lazy river, are forced to get to the pool area by 8 am in order to get a lounge chair for the day.
Liquor and food are always available. Room service is amazing. The service at the pool and beach is excellent. In fact, the pool bar staff walk around all the time, asking you if they can bring you a cold drink. The bartenders are always willing to make you a drink to your liking and they never skimp on alcohol.
Entertainment was enjoyable. The shows started around 9:00 and sometimes that would be a little early if we had a late dinner. There was a different show each night and if you were next door having a late dinner it may be easier to catch the shows there. Usually the shows at NOW (the hotel next door) seemed to be longer and more entertaining. Either way it’s a nice way to end the day, sitting in the cool breeze with a cocktail and a pleasant show. We never went to the nightclub but if you are up for dancing, the lively music will keep you going until 1 or 2 am.

All in All this place is wonderful and we had an amazing time.

Room Tip: Garden view is facing the service road. If you enjoy a view from your balcony choose pool side. He...

The entire resort was amazing!! We went for our honeymoon and it couldn't have been more perfect! Every single staff person was extremely nice and made us feel welcome and important. Food and drinks were wonderful and you were constantly attended to. Entertainment by New York, Usher, Chevron, Akon was fabulous!! Our rooms and the entire property was so clean and beautiful. The grounds were immaculate! The spa had the best massages my husband and I have ever had!!! You must go there, we decided not to do excursions and just get massages the whole time :) Would recommend to anyone!

Room Tip: Use a travel agent and ask for a room off the bottom floor, because your tub is outside and you can...
