My new husband and I went to Secrets on our 10 day honeymoon January 14 - 24, 2013. The AMResorts/Apple Vacations transfer people were easy to find at the airport, they were extremely helpful... we got to the hotel and were greeted with Champagne and cool towels and began the check in process... this process ended up taking about an hour, because they had a representative sit us down and try to convince us to sit through a seminar about their new resorts for some coupons that they did not clearly explain. There was also a significant language barrier between us and the representative, so we had no idea what she was discussing and it took some time to get her to understand we were not interested and we wanted to go to our room. Finally we were escorted to our room, and a few minutes later, we recieve a knock at the door, it is our butler, who wouldn't give us directions to where the food was, but told us he would give us a tour later... as you can imagine, we were not pleased. Later, we were in the shower and there was a knock at the door again, we managed to shut the bathroom door before housekeeping came in and blatently ignored the fact that there was an intimate moment going on in the bathroom... very strange, and again.. we were annoyed. As you can tell, it was not an impressive or pleasant first day...
However, the following days were amazing, all of the staff were incredible, including the server who came around the pool with drinks. She would keep an eye out for us and bring us drinks before we even had to ask, the entertainment crew was upbeat and friendly. They had a foam party which we absolutely loved! Each night there was entertainment that we enjoyed as well. They would leave an itinerary on your bed with turn down service each night so you knew what was going on the next day at both resorts, which we enjoyed.
We stayed in a Pool Walk Out Suite - it was fantastic, it was a large room with a sitting area and on the porch we had our own personal jacuzzi.
The food at Secrets was out of this world... one of THE best steaks we have ever had. The food at Now Larimar, which Secrets is attached to, was good, but nothing like at Secrets. Room service was also available 24/7.
We had the honeymoon package, which included breakfast one morning in your room, a spa package that included a 25 minute couples massage followed by a 25 minute couples facial... AMAZING! My husband had never had a massage before, and he loved it! It also included a romantic, candle lit dinner on the beach a few feet away from the ocean. It was delicious and absolutely amazing.
They had a sports bar and bowling alley at Now which we also took full advantage of. They also had a bazaar type of thing a few nights a week where local vendors would come and showcase their trades and you could buy authentic souvenirs.
The resort also offers access to multiple excursion companies, we went through the Apple Vacations Rep and swam with dolphins, again, a great experience.
The resort had much to offer, was nice, extremely clean, had friendly staff, and was an overall great experience, once we got passed the first day. The only downside was the initial sales pitch and the staff who would haggle you as soon as you walked into the lobby to listen to their pitch and get coupons (this went on the entire 10 days... we called it the lions den). Other than that, it was an amazing trip and resort, I'd be happy to go back again.

Room Tip: Walk out pool suite

As a group of four adults we were looing for an hotel without children and boy! did we find it!! Secrets Royal Beach has everything for a perfect holiday - great food - super beach and watersports facilities, - spotless rooms and hotel grounds and extremely helful and friendly staff. We loved the atmosphere this hotel has - quiet and peaceful yet entertainment full of life. I stayed in a room which looked out on to the service road and staff and vehicles constantly go up and down so asked for a change and was given a swim up room - absolutely great! It appeared to be no problem for the staff and thanks must go to Esther Soriano and Ramon who were extremely kind to us. The Riviera restaurant was our favourite haunt and the staff there became almost as family. Felix, who found my green tea every morning, Jacqueline who plied us with champagne every lunchtime, Juan Carlos who made me a special lemon, honey and cinnamon tea for my cold. All the staff, without exception, were great! I wanted to find out where the pharmacy was to get some antibiotics and the staff asked what I wanted and they rang the pharmacy, ordered it and had it delivered. Now that's what I call service. Without doubt, this is the best hotel we have ever stayed in and we shall return for a further three weeks in June 2013.

Room Tip: If you book a garden view room, don't be afraid to ask if there are any swim up rooms available...

Six years ago my wife and I spent a week at the Eden H (Hispanolia); a wonderful, relaxing vacation. Since then it has had a name change, to the Now Larimar. And attached to the Now is the adults-only Secrets.

Recently, in mid-January, we spent 10 days at the Secrets. We loved it! The location is excellent, the staff were consistently great, the food was very good, and the entire resort is very clean and well, well maintained. (It should also be noted that the Secrets guests have access to all of the Now's amenities (restaurants, bars, entertainment, etc.)).

Before I go on to more good stuff, let's get two negatives out of the way. First, it would appear the (heavy) patio doors were installed improperly. If I went out to the patio and my wife closed the door behind me, there was no easy way for me to open the door from the outside! There is no outside handle! Either you use your palms as suction cups on the glass and try to convince the door to slide open or you jam your fingers around the closed edge of the door and hope you get enough traction to open it that way. This was mentioned to management; hopefully the doors will be fixed soon (our friends' door was exactly the same, so I assume they were all improperly installed). The second negative is more serious. The Internet service is atrocious. This was a working vacation for my wife and it was extremely important that she stay in touch with the office. Not only was the Internet signal extremely weak but it often dropped her before she finished what she was doing. Extremely frustrating. (On top of that you have to pay for the service! Every other hotel in the Carribean we've been to provides it free of charge, with the minor inconvenience of having to go to the lobby to use it.)

As with any resort, the staff are a critical part of the formula. The Secrets scores big here. For us it started with a very helpful Ben at the front desk. And it carried on the next morning with Carlos, who often served us at breakfast. Over the days, the energetic Akon and his team (Francisco, Terremotto, Mario, and the infectiously bubbly Cinthia) kept everyone entertained and smiling. Domingo and Ismael at the swim-up bar were very efficient and always friendly. And the wonderful, smiling Patricia kept our glasses full while we were at the beach. Also, we can't say enough about Jacky, our concierge. Always very attentive, he made sure we had everything we needed and he stayed in close touch with us over the ten days. Ever-smiling and resourceful, Jacky made our stay that much better. And last, but certainly not least, was Carlitos at the Sports Bar (at the Now Larimar). Carlitos was there when we were first here, at the Eden H. He has not lost his enthusiam and his desire to please. An excellent bartender and a great ambassador for the Now.

We took in a few things while there. First the Pirate Ship adventure (the boat was called the Emotion, I believe). This is essentially a party-boat cruise up and down the beach, replete with pirate "sword fights" and all kinds of pirate swagger. Very entertaining and fun! We also went deep-sea fishing (Captain "Primo"). The boat was a bit dated (the "fishing chair" was shabby and missing its foot braces) but we still had fun. And we also attended the show "Jeerk" - a must see. As unlikely as this might sound, they are a rock band that also does innovative tap-dance routines and very creative dance/percussion routines. All of it with a thread of humour running through it. Seriously, a must-see! The last thing I want to mention is mid-afternoon at the Secrets pool on Thursdays. They have what looks like a home-made cannon that shoots bubbles into the pool until the pool is turned into one huge bubble-bath! Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most fun!

Secrets Royal Beach
We stayed at SRB from Jan 14 to Jan 18th. This was our second time at the resort and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves even with a few days of rain. We had a swim out room which we really like , we are pool people and nice to walk out the room and jump in the pool. Like all Amresorts, no wristbands and no reservations which to me is a big plus!

This resort is kept in perfect condition. The rooms , the grounds, the common areas, the beach, everything we could see was just perfect. The resort has a laid back, relaxing, elegant feel to it but still has the option to use all the facilities at the NOW resort also. We went to NOW one night for dinner and to see the JEERK show, which was by far the best show we ever saw at an all/inclusive.

Food is very good at SRB. The buffet is the main restaurant and is unlike most buffets as the decor is much more elegant and the food is in another room. Huge selection of food for breakfast and lunch and each night they have a theme night dinner. There is something for everyone no matter what you like. Everything is very good.

The Seaside grill is a sit down restaurant but inside and beach-side sitting. Beautiful setting and probably my favorite restaurant. Food and service is very good.
Oceana is a really neat restaurant but we didn't care for the food, thought the crab cakes were not very good and the seafood could have been better prepared while others I chatted with loved the food.
The new Asian restaurant is a Sushi Restaurant and is pretty cool. I do not like Sushi but my wife said it was excellent. I was still able to find some very nice food on the menu that was non Sushi. A very nice addition to the resort and I am sure will become very popular.
You have the option to eat at all the NOW restaurants. We kept hearing people talking about the Italian Restaurant at the new resort a golf cart away. They rode us from the SRB lobby to the restaurant and it was very good Italian. Really a must restaurant when staying at SRB. Just buy a bottle of wine as the NOW wines are not as good as SRB. The wines at SRB are much better than NOW. If you are a wine drinker they have better wine available to purchase and many are very reasonable.
They have a beach grill which is very popular for burgers, chicken etc. They also have a cute bar on the beach to just hang out in your bare feet.

Service is where this resort really excels. Beach and pool service is constant. Food service and timing is excellent. Excellent service at night in the outdoor theater. Rooms kept perfect. Just exceptional.

Entertainment is in the main Plaza at night or inside the main lobby bar if raining. The house band which plays often is a very good band. We saw a circus show and a professional guitar player( Arturo Fuertes ) who was extremely entertaining, in fact the whole plaza was packed and enjoyed every minute. We also saw the JEERK show at NOW which is a can't miss if there are still there. While enjoying the entertainment they serve you coffee, espresso, drinks, liqueurs, etc. I had espresso and baileys which they serves on a silver tray with a silver cup holder and a small cookie, very nice. They also had a champagne managers party where you get to meet the people who are making your stay great.

Check in is easy and they ask you to go to the side to get your resort coupons. These are the vacation club people. If you are not interested just say no. They did not approach us one time during our stay. If you are interested they will take you on a tour, it is up to you.

The beach is beautiful white sand, some sea grass that is raked and there are plenty of chairs. The pool is a serpentine pool with swim out rooms and areas for other to find a nook with or without shade with plenty of chairs. The other pool is the swim up bar pool which tends to be a little more active. We were there for the “foam party” and they shoot thick foam all over the pool. It was fun.

We just went to NOW for the JEERK Show and to eat Italian and we spent some time when it rained under the swim up bar at the Preferred Club pool. SRB was too nice to leave.

If you are looking for an adult resort that is quieter and laid back but still has all of the activities then this is a very good choice. You never see masses of people, never a wait to eat, many quiet areas all around the pool, a few nights we walked through the resort and thought we were the only ones there. SRB is first Class Tourism. The service is outstanding and you can tell from the landscaping to the silver service at the plaza, the quality of food and drink that this is an exceptional resort. The care that goes into this resort is very noticeable. We spent 4 night here last year but for some reason I like it better this although we liked it last year also. Maybe more and better entertainment in the Plaza. Maybe the Italian restaurant at NOW or maybe we just keep making new friends to return to see each year. We will return and if I can answer any questions my email is bbgamer1@yahoo.com.

After a very frustrating and exhausting 15 hour trip, it was supposed to be 7 hours, we had about had it when we arrived at Secrets Royal Beach. Within 5 minutes at the resort we were smiling and happy. We had called ahead to tell the resort that our airport transfer would need to be updated. Erika, the concierge manager, told us not to worry, she would take care of everything, and she really did. Reception was waiting for us with open arms at 10:00 when we finally arrived. We were met by Juan Manual from butler services. I think Juan Manuel made our vacation the wonderful experience that it was. Erika had left word to upgrade us to an ocean view room. All the rooms are the same, very beautiful and very clean. The only difference is the view. It just so happens I spend a lot of time on the balcony because I can't sleep in, so it meant a lot to me. Our cleaning lady, Carmen, worked tirelessly, I could never put the hours in that she does, and always with a smile.

I have read quite a bit about how wonderful the entertainment team was, but I am a watcher rather than a participater. I have to admit I spent a lot of time giggling under a palapa watching their antics. They truly are entertaining. Francisco and Angel spent a lot of time sitting and talking with us. They love to use their English while teaching us Spanish. We especially loved Jefrey, our pool waitperson. We became friends and taught each other a lot about our lives. I would have liked to adopt him and bring him home with us! I would like to mention the Thursday foam party in the pool. I will post some pictures here. I couldn't believe how much fun a group of adults could have in a bubble bath! We really should learn to relax and enjoy life more.

All the food on the Secrets side of the resort was very good and the restaurant service top notch, we especially enjoyed the staff at Oceana. They really went out of their way for us. The NOW Larimar side took some patience. The French restaurant did well and the food was very good, the rest of the restaurants were, I think, a little overwhelmed. The wine on the Secrets side was pretty good, but the Larimar side wine was completely undrinkable. I learned to order water on that side.

We went to Secrets the Vine, cancun, in October. Their spa was the prettiest I have ever seen, brand new and very modern, but totally disorganized and poorly managed. The spa at Secrets Royal Beach was the exact opposite. It was a little small and could use a little updating but the staff was fabulous and very well run. I had 2 massages, both from Melene and totally enjoyed them both. Be sure to go an hour early to enjoy the facilities. I would like to thank the young man who took me from station to station, but I can't remember his name.

Now for the not so good points. The lighting in the bathrooms made it very difficult to get ready for dinner in the evening. A good fix would be to switch out the makeup mirrors with lighted ones.
Probably the most irritating thing would be the wifi, or lack of. They charged $25 for 25 hours and it was terrible. I think an all inclusive should really be all inclusive. These are the only things I can think of to complain of! You know you are doing a good job if that's all we can come up with.

We have been to 17 different all inclusive only repeating once, this resort will change that. We felt so relaxed and happy here. The people are so very nice and the size of the resort perfect. It was well laid out so you never got lost or felt like you had to walk too far, and if you wanted more you could just go next door. Brilliant.

Room Tip: I peeked at all the rooms walking by, they are all exactly alike. If the view isn't important...
