“Excellant Esmeralda”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2010

My wife and I recently spent two wonderful weeks at the Esmeralda and thoroughly recommend it as a vacation resort.
Over the past 10 years we have stayed at mostly 4.5 and 5 star Iberostars in D.R. and Cuba and one disappointing stay at the GBP Tulum.
So we went prepared to be disappointed but in fact the GBP Esmeralda exceeded our expectations and we are already planning a return.
Air Transat out of Toronto was good although on the return while we arrived back 30 minutes early, it took Toronto airport workers an hour to get our baggage to the carousel.
The Esmeralda is really a compact and QUIET resort attached to the much larger and noisier GBP Punta Cana and Bavaro.
There are no games, skits, animation team or Kids Club, all of which are available a few steps away.
The food is simply the most varied and satisfying that we have had anywhere.
The rooms are spacious suites with large 5 piece bathrooms.
The service is attentive and timely especially if you sit in the same area each day and become known to the very friendly staff. Tipping is appreciated but many Europeans don't which is a little unfair to the poorly paid and hard working staff.
We only visited the on-site Bella Italia a la carte which was great.
Overall, outstanding value-for-money at a great new resort.

The positives:

The hotel was beautiful, clean and in good condition. We saw people detailing the chandelliers, table bases/legs and stair railings. Grounds were impeccably kept and beautifully landscaped. We had no issues with our room's services (safe, flat screen TV, fridge, hair dryer, etc all worked well). Good variety of food; lots of choices and plenty of fish and/or seafood. Food at the buffet was often promptly refilled when an item was running out. Large resort (combined with the Punta Cana, Bavaro and Ambar sections) which means more choices for pools and restaurants than you would typically get at a single resort.

The needs improvement:

Service was severely lacking and completely inconsistent. Getting drinks at every meal was a hit or miss. Sometimes the wait staff would take a long time to get to us after we've sat down, or promptly get to us and then forget about us resulting in no refils of our drinks. Or sometimes we would be waiting a silly amount of time just to get a menu upon being seated at the restaurant.

Check in: we were dropped off at the Punta Cana lobby by our bus and there was a fair sized group of us. Bell boys came with trams to take us to the Esmeralda lobby but there was no administrative rep. present. Bell boys herded us into the trams like cattle. They were very efficient and performed their jobs well as bell boys but our groups was new and a little lost and there was no one there to answer our questions or give us a warm greeting. Instead, bell boys ordered our chaotic group into several trams while people asked repeatedly if the trams were going to the Esmeralda. Upon arrival at the lobby, we crowded into the reception desk elbow to elbow as the reception staff multitasked and checked multiple people in at once. We were given very little info. and sent on our way with our room key and a few informational sheets. Apparently there was butler service of some sort available for us but I'm unsure to this day as to what that means as it was never explained to us.

Beach bar was small, not completely stocked and provided no food whatsoever. If you were hungry, you would have to walk a long ways down the beach to the beach side restaurant or go back to the pool side restaurant for food.

Other observations
(which negatively affected our experience though bares no effect on the rating of the resort as there are factors out of their control):

This resort is supposed to be a "family" resort and while there were families there, we didn't get the family resort feel. Children's activities seem to be very lacking and the resort felt overrun by groups of partying adults (like spring break but with older adults) - not the kind of resort we were really looking for. Though we have no children, I thought it might be worth mentioning that this resort seemed to also be lacking in children's activities/facilities.

Visitors here also seem to shamelessly like reserving seats by the pool or at the beach with towels more than we've seen an AI we visited in Mexico.

Room- Beautiful, Clean, Plasma TV with satellite channels
Food- Average. Good variety and always available. However food lacks spice/favour
Staff- Most speak fairly good English and are extremely friendly and willing to help
Entertainment- Nightly shows entertaining and club for those who are interested
Beach- Heaven. Sand is beautiful and water clean.

Negative- Avoid vacation club sales presentation. While there is a free gift, the sales staff is extremely aggressive and club is very expensive. In my opinion it is a time share however they "avoid" referring to it as one

This resort is perfect for a quiet, relaxing getaway. we found it an ideal stay for a family traveling with young children. it is only a half hour from the airport which is great after a long day of traveling. Also, the resort is quaint and everything is within close proximity but you have the benefit of being able to use the larger, more "active" facilities of the Bavaro or Punta Cana, if you are looking for more action. Those sister resorts looked lovely too but definitely had a more lively, party atmosphere.
The grounds are the most beautifully landscaped and maintained that I have ever seen. Everything at this resort is immaculate. This stretch of beach is breathtaking - not a rock or piece of coral anywhere.
The food is quite good at this resort. It exceeded my expectations. They could strive to make some improvements in this area, but in general, the quality and selection is fine. Their potatoes and chicken are much tastier than what we get here. They taste free range/organic.
Lastly, the people are amazing. The are fun loving and warm people who clearly love children. It never seemed contrived or put on for tips. Yes, it's an all inclusive, but they deserve tips. You won't meet nicer people anywhere. This resort has done a great job in their hiring of staff. Professional, friendly, great English and hard working. The butler service is an added touch of luxury. We enjoyed the friendships we made with them, especially Marjorie, she's wonderful.
In closing, I think this resort is very good value for money. I would go definitely go back and would recommend this resort to my friends and family and anyone looking for a quiet vacation.

PS: bring your Ipad or laptop since they have free wifi in the lobby.

Stayed here for 2 weeks and no complaints at all. This hotel is a quiet section to relax. If you want to party go to the Punta Cana or Bavaro Section. The Esmeralda is for a relaxing time and good for seniors also as everything is close to the rooms. The food at the buffet was very good. The butler service was a bonus because if the maids forgot something in your room which they usually did call the butlers who speak English well. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel. The shows aren't as good as in the Mayan.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2010

To start...We arrived at 11:00 and thought wow..we have the rest of the day at the beach..we were excited. Shame on them..we waited in the lobby till 4:30 pm to get our room, by then our son was crying because alls he wanted to do was play in the water.
Wasted one day of our trip.

The beach: Beautiful, sandy, no rocks, lots of lounge chairs.
The beach Bar: very sad...not 5 star., The frozen drink machines broken and flat tasting pop.
The pool: There are 2., one for everybody and one adult pool. Very very clean. They do not play music and when they did you could hardly hear it., It is a nice feeling I think to have the island music playing., it was way too quite. Basicly sat there in dead silence.

There is no kids club here, they might at the rest of the resort but i certainly wouldn't take my kid a mile away to spend time with people we don't even know., the resort is huge with other parts up front with different names...kinda like 3 or 4 resorts in one.

The room: Was very clean, it has four poster canopy beds. The beds were very comfortable. The BAD: There is a window to the bathroom with blinds on the outside,,,,so anyone else in the room can peek in on you while you shower or have a bath. Not great with children.
They fill your fridge every day, with little shots rum, vodka, pepsi, and one bag of lays plain chips.
Food: Right in the esmerelda section: Breakfast: buffet style; LOTS OF EVERY THING ANYONE COULD POSSIBLY WANT TO EAT. Very good
Lunch: Is held in the buffet open air stlye ....Lots of variety.
Supper: Is held in the same place as you ate breakfast. Great food: THEY TRY TO MAKE IT ALL FANCY..SOMETIMES YA JUST WANT TO GO TO THE BUFFET BECAUSE YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE GETTING ALL DOLLED UP.
There are different restaurants through out the entire huge resort that you can reserve. We opted not to do that as there was such a great variety in the buffet.

SO HERE IS MY BAD: warning to you all:::::::: If you don't bring your wallet to lunch and not leave a TIP..( for them to give you water!!! Basically) the next day they will remember and will not even acknowledge that you exist. You won;t be offered wine and your dirty plate will sit there when you return with a new plate. We had to go get our own water from their waiting station.
NOTE: it is hard to find water around the pool to fill up your water bottle, you can only reach it from the water side of the pool bar. They could use a refill station.
SO: Tip the bell boy,to take your bags, Tip the day maid daily, tip your breakfast lunch and supper, Then here is the clincher....There is a night maid that brings towels at 8:00 PM AND CHOCHOLATES,,, and she was mad at us because we did not leave her a tip also. HMMMM didn't ask for or need the towels or chocolates
Hate to be cranky about this but really it is an allinclusive,. we are not cheap, we were out at least 400.00 US in tips. Not to mention tip they guy on the way out and the bar tenders.

My over all impression is this: The resort would be great for senior citizens...It was boring,, If this is the way the rich, exclusive people vacation, they can have it. It will be 3 star for us next time. Actually not seeing the big overall difference between the 5 star and 3 star, when you compare dolllar for dollar. I couldn't recomend this hotel to people under 65.

The Esmeralda is one of several "hotels" that you get to by walking (10min) or taking the trolley from the main hotel/lobby called "Punta Cana"(Principe"division) When you arrive you will be taken from the airport to Punta Cana main lobby . From their you need to tell the staff which hotel you are in. They will then take you by trolley to the Esmeralda Lobby (each hotel has its own lobby) You will get two room key cards, coloured bracelet to correspond with your hotel and an envelope with info. **read the info** The room is exactly like photos posted. Our butler / bell boy was Emanuel. Friendly, outgoing, genuine. Perk of the Esmeralda is you get to eat at all the other hotel buffets / a la cartes. (Exception: Ambar-registered guests only) Food changes daily. Restaurants are only open between certain hours. Esmeralda has its own a la carte open if restaurant (buffet) is closed. Right next to the restaurant (Jazmine) other ala carte open is on the beach. You can make dinner reservations for specialty restaurants through the customer service rep at your hotel lobby. We did book at the Ambar but received terrible service. Believe it was because of our bracelet colours. Lounge chairs at the pool always had room. Tipping the pool bartender will get you remembered. We sat at the same places everywhere we went. You will be remembered and treated well. The resort prices are expensive. Remember to bring your own items. Conditioner was 9 us. Tanning lotion 15 us. Pack what you think you won't need. There are multiple vendors on the far end of the beach if you walk (30 min till first set) You can also use the water taxi. Take your time to negotiate and it can be pleasant. Few people that try to sell vacation time packages. These are time shares. Give no one your credit card. Sign nothing. I recommend the spa. The deep tissue massage at 75us was worth it, it will be charged to your room, they do not accept cash.Weather was amazing with one day hitting 38 degrees Celsius. Dominican minute will be long. My husband and I are labourers who worked hard for this trip. This trip bonded us closer than I could have imagined. Thank you Esmeralda.(photos of trip to come)
