“The perfect tropical getaway”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

A dream vacation, right from the moment we landed. Everyone we met, from the airport to the resort, was so happy and welcoming and ALWAYS smiling. Everyone we met at the resort was so kind and genuine and it immediately felt like a home away from home. The personal attention and service we received was unparalleled. Laura at the front desk gave us a wonderful welcome and even made sure to see us off on our last day. We met Victor, a resort butler, who showered us with luxuries like lavender pillows and sparkling wine. Our suite, spacious and beautiful, was made even more beautiful every day by Carmen. Nicanor came to our rescue when our room key stopped working and was always nearby with a brilliant smile, warm hello and a joke. We were excited to see everyone each day, even more excited when we hadn't seen them in a few days.
The moment we arrived at the Bahia Principe, we were blown away by its beauty. One thing that makes the Bahia such a wonderful place to stay is that whether you're at the Punta Cana, Bavaro, Ambar or Esmeralda, you have full access to all 4. We loved this - the beauty of walking the resort, the nightly activities and a wonderful selection of restaurants. We didn't get to every one this time, but loved our meals at Santa Fe and Portofino.
We saw so much of the 4 resorts but were always blissfully happy to return to the Esmeralda, which felt like a smaller, more intimate resort. It was the perfect home away from home. And SO close to the beach!
Our first time to the Dominican and to the Esmeralda, but it certainly was not our last! We're already planning on a visit next year and can't wait to see everyone again.

Room Tip: Email any requests prior to arrival. We preferred to have a King bed rather than 2 Queens so we ema...

Long and detailed review 15-22 December 2013 - Family of 4, 2 young kids.

Last time we went on vacation in 2011, we went to Beaches Turks and Caicos and I got sick. Spent the week in the room on antibiotics that nearly killed me. I vowed to never let that happen again... Well... This time we brought a bug with us from Canada. Probably something the kids picked up at daycare. We spent the first three days in the hospital in Punta Cana... Wife, 3 yr old and me were puking our guts out the first night. Surprisingly the 1 yr old didn't get sick.

To turn this more positively, the doctors on the resort were amazing. They coordinated EVERYTHING from insurance payment to transport to the hospital (30 min) to coordinating with hospital doctors. The hospital was also GREAT. I think we were treated better there than we would have been in Canada. In the emergency a doctor was with us right away. We got a room for all 4 of us, with phone and tv, they brought us food... As awful as this part of the trip was, I don't think it could have been any better. Thank you to Doctor LUIS CABRERA on the resort for making the process sooooo smooth. Thank you to Air Canada Vacations Rep JOHANNE PATRY for visiting us in the hospital and going grocery shopping for us! (WOW!)

My point is if you are going to get sick, then there is nothing to worry about at this resort. You will be treated with the utmost care and you will get cure or at the very least feel a lot better.

Now for the resort.

Arrival. As you would expect, you have to go through customs then make your way to the bus. We had a real nice cruiser bus (Air Canada Vacations) with AC. There are luggage porters trying to carry your bags to the bus, which is very helpful when you are carrying kids and luggage! It takes a little while to get through the process but customs took 20-30 minutes (lineup), bus took 30 minutes to drive but we waited in the bus for a good 45 minutes before we departed. At the hotel, they have to brief you for a good 15-20 minutes about the amenities and the restaurants when you get there, but it's info you need anyways. So it takes a while to finally get to your room, so all I'm saying is if you're in a hurry, you'll be upset.

Wow. This place is HUGE! We spent most of our time in the Esmeralda and didn't explore too much of the rest of the resort since we had a 1 yr old and a 3.5 yr old in tow, but there really seems to be a lot to see.

Upon returning from the hospital, we were disappointed to see our room had not been cleaned in 3 days. We were expecting it to be done since the PR staff of the hotel had phoned us at the hospital to see if we needed anything (yea, that's right!) and they had mentioned everything would be cleaned. No worries though, the next morning an army of cleaners came to our room with disinfectant and cleaned EVERYTHING! This was a nice thing to see. They really cared about cleanliness and wanted to make sure nothing in our room had made us sick. Funny though, the day we came back, guests were treated to purell when entering all restaurants...

Buffet (Jazmin). The food is very good. There are a lot of choices. Not as much as you would expect I'm sure, but there are at least 10+ choices for your main every meal. There is always pasta and burgers. There is a permanent salad bar with all you would need including many types of dressing. There is a kids selection: it is very small and not always healthy, but it does the job for fussy kids. I don't think we ate the same thing twice while we were there (albeit 4 days). And the serving staff, OMG! So friendly! The first night my wife had to go to the washroom to *be sick* and I was already in the hospital. She had to leave the kids there and had to ask one of the waiters (who spoke french of course!) FRANCOIS to watch the kids. What a nice man. Every day when we would come back to the buffet we would chat with him for a little while and he would ask how we were all doing and it was just so nice to feel cared for...

In the morning we always sat in the same section because we wanted to be waited on by JHAN CARLOS. That guy was just too much fun. He was always high-fiving the kids and they just loved him for it... He had learned our coffee/tea/apple juice/pineaple juice order by the second day and always brought it to us without asking. The rest of the staff is just as nice but in my eyes JHAN CARLOS was always bending over backwards for us and it made us feel so good.

We noticed the waiting staff worked long hours. We would see them in the morning at the buffet and at night at the à la carte restaurants. I don't know how they work so hard and always smile. What a great bunch of people.

Restaurants. I followed the advice of people on this site and emailed the resort about a week before we got there with our room requests and restaurant reservations. A week might be a little late. I never did get a response from the resort. When we returned from the hospital the restaurants were all booked up but the CLIENT SERVICES staff found us some spots at the BELLA ITALIA and the TAKARA. These two restaurants are at the Esmeralda and are across the pool from the rooms. Literally a 1 minute walk. Both restaurants were amazing. They are à la carte but they also have a buffet full of appetizers, bread, salads and deserts. You could eat the whole meal from the buffet but you'd be missing out. At the BELLA ITALIA, we both had the steak and it was really good. At the Takara, the food was sublime. And the buffet was full of Sushi. I don't eat fish or seafood, and I was stuffed when I left the TAKARA. Some sushis were vegetarian and some with only tampura. Simple amazing. The TAKARA is a must in my opinion.

Rooms. I had requested building 90 to be close to the beach, and we were assigned building 91, pool side (room 91215). I was worried about noise from construction as it was mentioned on this site, but I looked around for the construction and COULD NOT find it, let alone hear it. Like others have mentioned on this site, there is not one bad room/building. All buildings are inter connected on the inside and you walk from one to the next. When the doors are closed (patio and front door) you hear nothing. My kids napped without a problem and they are fussy when it comes to noise. The rooms were kept very clean every day and the fridge was filled with cola, beer and water on a daily basis. One complaint was there was no REAL juice for the kids, only sugar drinks, so they drank water. The shower was leaking a little (probably old or bad caulking) but we were always wet from the pool or the ocean so it didn't matter to us. The room is about 1 minute door to door to the pool, 2 minute door to door to the buffet, and 4 minutes to the ocean water. Can't be any better situated. The building does not have elevators and the stairs are pretty narrow. We were on the third floor (AC worked great) and we had one of those huge tricycle double-kid stroller. It was awkward and strenuous to bring it downstairs and upstairs, but not impossible. I think next time we'll opt for a ground floor room. The crib mattress for the baby was folded up blankets. After talking to the building manager (and using a little of google translate) she got us a proper mattress which was only 2 inches thick. But that's all they had. The sofa unfolds into a bed, but it is not a mattress, it is just an unfolded sofa. It is as hard as a rock and not comfortable for an adult unless you enjoy sleeping on a hard surface like the tiled floor. For my 3 yr old, it was fine. There are 2 sitting chairs and a table on the balcony, perfect for drying some clothes or reading a book while the kids are napping.

Pool. This is probably the part we didn't enjoy as much as everything else. The beach towel game is in full swing here. We would get up pretty early with the kids and I would go out on the balcony to watch the sunrise and there were towels on chairs around the pool at 5-6 am already! We would usually hit the pool later in the afternoon and never have any problems finding a chair at that time. Mind you we'd park around the kiddie pool, which is 2 feet deep, and at least 20 feet in diameter and wonderful for young kids. There are umbrellas everywhere so shade is never hard to find. They run out of clean/dry beach towels in the afternoon sometimes so exchanging them in the AM is probably a good idea. I would return my towels in the PM and exchange them for towel CARDS. It made carrying everything else easier.

Beach. The Esmeralda beach is crowded. Finding a chair or group of chairs in the AM was never difficult. We would play the towel game before going to breakfast around 0730 (buffet opens at 0700) but by the time we'd be done eating and gotten our beach toys there were still PLENTY of free chairs everywhere at around 0900. I don't think the beach was ever full. Most people seem to drag out the beach chairs right to the water's edge to tan since there are umbrellas everywhere else. The water front looks like a traffic jam of chairs and people. There was plenty of room to play in the sand on the water's edge with the kids. The beach wasn't noisy, and our baby napped there in the AM on a beach chair. I walked the beach and noticed that the main resort and Ambar beaches seemed a lot less crowded.

Splashpad. The splashpad for the kids is at the entrance of the resort, very far from the Esmeralda. You can either take the little buses there or go to the concierge and they will take you there directly via private bus. Either way is fine. It takes about 10 minutes with all the stops (speed bumps). It's not a splash pad, it's a mini water park: a pool with a splash structure in the middle and slides everywhere. There are beach chairs with umbrellas around the pool, a bar and a kids mini-spa. The water is colder than the Esmeralda main pool but you get used to it quickly with the sun shining...

Airport. They improved it since last time I was there a few years ago. There are shops and restaurants there now. Surprisingly, I recommend buying souvenirs at the resort. We bought some rhum bottles, 15$ for 1L at the hotel and 37$ at the airport for the same bottle!!!!!

Misc. Standard Canada plugs work, even if the prongs have the big and small, they fit. Alarm clock has ipod/iphone connection to play music but it is the old connector, not the lightning, so if you want to listen to your music, bring adapter. Free internet in the lobby BUT ONLY 60 MINUTES per day (and it's not a clocked 60 minutes where you use 5 minutes here and 10 minutes there to last all day, your 60 minutes start the moment you connect). I think the 60 minutes is device dependent, so your iphone would get 60 minutes and your ipad would get its own 60 minutes. But you can buy internet on the whole resort for 50$ for the week if you want. We asked to get a cake for our 1 yr old's birthday, but they needed 24 hours notice, so we celebrated the next day (didn't charge us for the cake at all!)

This was our second trip to a Bahia Principe and we were not disappointed. We have been to the Gran Bahia Principe Coba (very nice!), Blau Natura Park (ugh!), Beaches Negril (wow!), Beaches Turks and Caicos (double wow!). I'm sure we'll return to the Esmeralda.

Feel free to contact me for questions. This site is always a great help!

We stayed 5 nights here in mid November for my birthday. Stayed in the Don Pablo Esmarelda section which was nice and one of the closest to the beach. Other sections had to take a tram to the beach but we walked. Food was just ok. Nothing very good even in the specialty restaurants. Service was sometimes good, but mostly average. There was definately a language problem if you dont speak Spanish. The nightly entertainment was nothing special. The property was beautiful and very well maintained and the beach was relaxing.

Room Tip: We had a ground floor corner room which was nosiey at night. Probably would have been better to be...

We just spent another marvelous two weeks at the Esmeralda (we were there two weeks in February 2013) and had a really enjoyable time once again. When our son wanted us to accompany his family for a holiday so we could give child care support, we automatically chose the Esmeralda with confidence. We were provided with the requested ground floor (for my mobility issues) and adjoining (for babysitting ease) rooms for which we were very grateful. The staff is great and the service and food really fine. We tried the spa and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of massages we received. The beach is beautiful and the pools enticing. If we ever return to the Dominican we will be staying at the Esmeralda again. Just know that when you first arrive, the guests for Esmeralda do NOT register at the Punta Cana reception area where the bus stops. They are transported to the Esmeralda for registration and no one really tells you that. The Gran Bahia Principe is a small "city" with a multitude of amenities. What we always come away with though, besides a satisfying experience, is the friendly smile and welcoming "ola" of every staff member no matter where you meet them, no matter what they are busy doing..

Another excellent vacation in the Dominican.
We stayed at the Esmeralda the first week of December 2013. Last time we stayed at the Punta Cana section a few years ago with a group and friends.
Great food, great service. nice beach, nice pools, excellent entertainment every night at the Tropicana theater.
The only bad thing.. Those darn NoSeeUm bugs. Bring bug spray and put on a generous coating after 5 pm when the sun starts going down.

We are a party of 4 arriving at Esmeralda on Tues January 14. I have been trying to arrange our Al La Carte choices to rrppbpesm@bahia-principe.com as suggested on Trip Advisor for 4 days now. So it looks like we will likely end up at the Resort without our reservations like so many others I have read about here; and have to deal with hours of frustration and disappointment when we arrive. I have sent our requests 4 times and another to info.esmeralda@bahia-principe.com, and still no confirmation about our 7 A La Carte included meals. I'll update my rating and comments if something changes real soon. I notice the Hotel is quick to respond to feedback on Trip Advisor comments, but it doesn't appear they take corrective action on there end. P.S. I'll let you know.
