Travel:
Our family of 4 (two teenage daughters) stayed at the Bahia Principe Esmeralda from August 25th to September 1st. We booked with Orbitz flying on Wesjet out of Toronto. We were a bit apprehensive as this was the first time booking through Orbitz. Other than an initial issue during the online booking process, Orbitz was relatively easy and uneventful.

We booked VIP travel to take us from the Punta Cana airport to the Bahia Principe and back. We were transported from the airport to the resort in a mini bus with approximately 16 people. The bus seating was somewhat tight but bearable. The bus would be stopping at a number of resorts to drop off guests along the way. Luckily we were the first stop. The return trip to the airport was significantly nicer as we were picked up by a relatively modern minivan that was dedicated entirely for our family, which was a pleasant surprise.

Rooms:
We arrived at the Bahia Principe main lobby and were immediately taken to the Bahia Principe Esmeralda Lobby. Once there we were efficiently checked in and directed to our rooms. Prior to arriving at the resort we requested adjoining or connecting rooms in section 90 or 91, one with a king bed and one with double beds. However, once there we were told that although we did request adjoining or connecting rooms they did not have any record of the location we requested. The staff did immediately move us to another room which was still not as requested. However the front desk staff worked hard towards getting us a room to our satisfaction, and on the 2nd complete day we were moved to a very nice room that met all our requirements.

We were provided a little welcome gift in our room upon arrival that included a small bottle of rum. The rooms were kept neat and the mini bar was kept stocked. The rooms were cleaned daily and the towels changed at that time. To our surprise the cleaning staff returned in the evening to provided a 2nd set of clean towels and to provide a “turn down” service, which was a nice touch. On occasion they also left towel art or something decorative such as a rose petal design.

We have been to different resorts in the Dominican on four occasions, but on this particular trip it seemed like the power went out in our room almost every night. We had never had that happen on our other trips in the past.

Food:
We had breakfast daily at the Jazmin Restaurant. The Geranios was closed due to the fact it was off season. The restaurant had a wide variety food on a daily basis that always seemed fresh.

The Jazim was also the buffet restaurant for both lunch and dinner. The assortment of food for lunch and dinner was very good. The beef was very good and in fact our daughters were more than content to eat at the buffet on a daily basis as opposed to the theme restaurants.
The staff at the Jazmin was exceptional on a daily basis. They always greeted us with a big smile (especially Celeste) and made sure we were welcomed and always taken care of…… and our glasses were always kept topped up. Danyl, Celeste, Luis, Jose, Agelis, Braudy, Jorge, and Rafael (of course), provided exceptional service and always made us feel very welcome.

We also ate at the Bella Italia, Don Pablo Gourmet (filet Mignon was amazing), Garden Grill and Portofino Italian (very good) theme restaurants. The staff was exceptional at all the restaurants, although we were not very thrilled with the service at the Garden Grill. Knowing that many of these resort restaurants provide small portions, we asked the waiter at the Garden Grill the size of the steak they serve. After being advised of the size of the steak, we asked the waiter if I could have a double portion of steak. I was told that I would have to eat the first piece first and then I could request a 2nd piece if I wished. We thought this was totally illogical as everyone would have finished their dinner while I was still eating mine. Ultimately we simply ate what we were given and left. As a side note, I requested a double serving at the Don Pablo Gourmet and was provided it without hesitation ….. exceptional service, not to mention it was an exceptional steak.

Ultimately, we found the food at the Bahia Principe very good overall.

Grounds and Pools:
The grounds at the resort were kept very clean and there was always staff either cleaning or taking care of the grounds. The beach was also kept very clean although the area with the lounge chairs and shade huts seemed to be a bit tight for space.

There always seemed to be some chairs available around the pools although there was always a number of “typical vacationers” who put towels on chairs early in the morning but are nowhere to be found afterwards, sometimes for hours at a time.

Towels are exchanged on a daily basis at the towel hut by the pool, and there never seemed to be a shortage of towels.

Miscellaneous:
The nice aspect of the Bahia Principe Esmeralda is that it is a smaller resort which made it cozy and you could also go to the main Bahia Principe if you wanted to see the nightly shows or be around more activity. There is a shuttle that goes from the Esmeralda to the main Bahia Principe and back, and it is about a 10 to 15 minute walk one way. There is also a “Pueblo Principe town” at the main resort that is like a market square that has stores, a casino and some street vendors as well.

The Esmeralda has a few nice areas around the lobby to just sit and relax and to enjoy a few drinks. The bar staff would come around to see if you needed anything and Eva took very good care of us while we relaxed, as did Nestor at the lobby bar.

We also had a butler assigned to our area that was there to make sure we were taken care of. Although we did not meet him until the 3rd day, Victor would come around from time to time to see if we needed anything. Victor also arranged for us to have special pillows from their pillow menu. You could choose from a variety ranging from lavender to green apple, which was another very nice touch. My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary during that week and Victor arranged to decorate our room and provide us with a celebratory bottle of fine spirits!

Dress Code:
Upon check in we were told that men required long pants and closed shoes at the theme restaurants, so I complied as requested. However I was annoyed to see that a number of male guest at each of the specialty restaurants were not dressed as required. In some cases they were poorly dressed for what was to be a somewhat upscale resort venue. The only issue I have with this is that they either stick with the policy or don’t even mention it is a requirement if it is not going to be enforced.

A couple of areas of caution:
The first night at the resort my wife was bitten by something while she slept. Her eye swelled up to the point she had trouble see out of it, so we decided we should have it checked. There was a doctor and pharmacy on the property (at the Ambar) and the Esmeralda front desk staff immediately arranged for us to be taken to the Ambar. However, we were unaware that in order for the doctor to see my wife there would be a $101 US charge. The doctor seemed a bit disinterested at first, however, to his credit, he did advise us that the pharmacist would be able to recommend an over the counter product if we wished. Luckily the swelling eventually went down on its own.

The Bahia Principe Privilege Club
The Bahia Principe group has a Privilege Club which is similar to and associated with the RCI vacation group. They have representatives solicit and encourage you to sit in on a presentation that would explain how you could save money on your next trip with special privileges. We typically do not get roped into those types of presentations however on this particular occasion we were assured that their club does not involve a membership and you wouldn’t have to pay anything at the moment. However, they asked if you had a credit card because although you wouldn’t need to use it, if your last 4 number matched 4 numbers at their office, you could win a trip to one of their resorts. They also would provide you a gift just for sitting in.
You had to arrange an appointment time and then they bring you in a room with numerous tables. At each table is a representative pitching the Privilege Club membership to a guest at the resort. They ask for one hour of your time, however we were there for almost 2 hours. Bottom line: they attempt to sell you a 30 year vacation club package at a special price, BUT you can only take advantage of the price on that particular day. When you tell them you can’t afford it they start to reduce the price in conjunction with the term of the vacation plan. We went through 3 different people (up the management chain) trying to convince us to purchase a membership. Eventually we told them that unless the cost is ZERO, it is too much for us….. it was pressure selling at its finest! So beware if you do not like to be in those situations!

Check out:
Check out was very smooth and efficient. We were taken to the Bahia Principe lobby and waited for the VIP driver who was on time.

Conclusion:
Overall all we had a great vacation. The weather was great, the facilities were very clean and food was very good and plentiful. We would definitely recommend this resort if you want a nice relaxing vacation.

We are already planning our return to the Esmeralda for next year!

I travelled with my husband and another couple. We stayed at this resort the week of the 22-28th September and enjoyed every moment.

To begin with you must be patient if you arrive before 3 p.m. because the rooms are not quite ready, but you can go for a cocktail and lunch and then within an hour or so the front desk advises you that all is ready and they escort you and your luggage to your room.

The rooms are very spacious and clean, the bathroom as well.

The grounds are immaculate and gorgeous.

The Jasmine buffet food is visually stunning and the variety and quality is also excellent. The effort and ability of the chefs at this resort is outstanding. Our favorite waiter was Braudy, every day he was smiling and courteous and he made our stay that much more pleasant.

The à la carte restaurants were the best I have ever experienced at an all inclusive. I would like to mention in particular the professionalism of Santos, and how he and his staff at both the Takara and Italian restaurant at the Esmeralda, were outstanding. The à la cartes, French Gourmet and the Don Pablo Gourmet, were very good for both food and service as well.

The pools were beautiful and the water was very warm but what do you expect with day-in-and day-out beautiful weather!

The best part of this resort though is the stunning beach. The strip goes on for miles and is great if you like to take long walks. The beach side buffet Arricife has the best Sangria!

Over all our expereince was so positive that we plan to return next September with more family and friends. The staff at this resort work very hard and their efforts are very much appreciated - thanks for such a great vacation!

Room Tip: Building 90 is right beside the beach

If you are a returning guest like we were, you made be very disappointed the whole atmosphere has changed for the worse, we have just returned after 2weeks on the 1st October ,this was the same time as we visited last year and oh how it has changed, there is a new 4 block and new swimming pool but no extra buffet dinning area to accommodate the extra 320 guests, unfortunately it has been opened up to family's and at this time of year lots of very young children, you could not have any meals ( b/fast, lunch, evening meal ) without children running about and babies crying , there was no escaping them even in the a la carte restaurant or on the beech , I go on holiday to relax but this time I was glad to come home to some peace and quiet, sorry Esmeralda last year was idyllic and a very special experience and we do a lot of holidays throughout the world and it was nice to find something so peaceful and beautiful, I have to give credit to the staff who were pushed to keep everyone happy they were always polite but rushed and you did not have the same connection with them as we did last year. The food was still very good it was just the noise that spoilt it for us so we will not be going back to the Esmeralda and may be it will have to be adults only from now on for us.

Room Tip: Pool view or you will be looking over to other hotel rooms, we like high floor better view of the po...

I recommend this resort to everyone!! Resort is suitable for all age groups and there is always something to do. The beach is beautiful!!! The restaurants on the resort were amazing. Only a few of the employees could speak english, this is common in the whole town. I still found that even with the language barriers they were all very welcoming. We stayed on the Esmeralda and we had such and amazing time. It was our first time in Dominican Republic and thanks to this experience it will not be our last. Thank you Gran Bahia I lovee every minute of my stay

My fiancé and I stayed at the Esmeralda for the second time from September 10-24. Compared with our last visit some things had improved, but some things were disappointing. I’ll split my review into sections.

Arrival/check-in: dropped at the Punta Cana lobby and were taken straight to the Esmeralda. Our room wasn’t ready and we had a 40 minute wait; which given it was 3pm and we’d been travelling for 15 hours was disappointing. They didn’t have any restaurant reservations for us even though I’d emailed, and this took another 40 minutes to sort out, so OH went to the room, which was still being cleaned. All in all, not a great experience this time around, though Manuel was very helpful in sorting out our reservations and gave us exactly what we wanted.

Room: great. Large and spacious, spotlessly clean, lovely décor, had everything we needed. We were in room 90218 which was exactly what we requested: 2nd floor with a pool and sea view, in building 90. View was great. Downsides were it was an interconnecting room and unfortunately we could hear EVERYTHING going on next door; and in the evening you did get some noise from the lobby; I’d bring earplugs if you want a pool view room.

Maid and mini-bar service: room was made up daily by about 12 pm and we often had extras like rose petals etc, and the mini-bar was always restocked.

Beach: lovely fine white sand and a nice breeze. Loungers readily available until around 9am.

Pool: there are 2 pools, both with swim-up bars, and an adult only Jacuzzi pool. We stuck mainly with the pool nearest the beach, which is ‘livelier’ than the second pool but still pretty quiet. The pools got VERY hot some days which was a shame, as it was like getting into a hot bath; this wasn’t as much of an issue last year so could have been down to the weather. Loungers were readily available in the shade until about 9am and in the sun all day at the main pool, and in both shade and sun all day at the second pool.

Grounds: immaculate as always.

Food: there are 2 buffet restaurants (one was closed) plus a snack bar; on the days it was open, we preferred to have breakfast at the snack bar as it has a lovely beach/sea view. The selection of food at both was similar and plentiful.

We didn’t dine at the buffet in the evening, sticking with the a la cartes; in order of preference they were as follows:

Takara: great service, and as a pescatarian I loved the food.

Maiko: we enjoyed the food and the show table (if you want this you need to specify when you book)

Don Pablo: lovely décor and ambience, food was great, and we like that it’s fully a la carte. Service was good, but not great.

Garden Grill: good service on 2 visits, great service the other 2. Food was decent, and great for meat-lovers. OH had the burger one night which was an additional $10, but felt it worth it and really enjoyed it.

El Pescador: OH struggled here as pretty much all the starters were seafood which he doesn’t eat; I however was in paradise. My main of fish lasagne was absolutely delicious and OH enjoyed his chicken with mozzarella.

El Olivio: great service and I liked the selection, plus some of the starters are a la carte. Unfortunately my cod had a fair few bones in which were hard to spot due to the sauce, and that was a bit off-putting.

Bella Italia: this was one of our favourites last year; not so this year. Both times I ordered pizza and both times key ingredients were left out completely or else substituted. OH wasn’t overly fussed with his pasta either, and the service was decent, but not great.

Santa Fe: the only starter I was able to eat was the nachos; everything else contained meat. I wasn’t overly enamoured with my main of vegetable enchiladas either, though OH liked his burritos.

Service: overall it was friendly and efficient, though I felt that last year it was perhaps slightly better. The staff at the snack bar, Takara, Garden Grill, both swim-up bars, and the lobby bar were particularly good. Also a big thanks to Manuel from Guest Services who took care of our reservations for us and also another small issue we had, and to the sub-manager Arcadis.

Evening entertainment: you have the choice of the lobby bar at the Esmeralda, or other various bars throughout the resort, plus the Tropicana theatre, and the Pueblo Principe. We mainly chose just to have a drink at the lobby bar, but caught the Circus Show at the Tropicana which was great. There was something for all tastes and ages. My one criticism would be that the lobby bar was very warm some nights; personally, I would love to see a beach bar (weather permitting) to make the most of the sea breeze.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return; any questions, send me a message and I’m happy to help. I’d also recommend getting a massage at the Kukua beach club next door; $48 for about an hour, great value and half the price of the on-site spa.

Two weeks at Esmeralda between September 21 and October 5th with two young kids. This is our second stay at Esmeralda and our 8th at Bahia Principe.

The hotel is beyond expectations. Extremely clean and friendly. Luxurious vegeatations. The trains run continuosly, there s is no wait.

The new WaterPark is a wonderful attraction for kids. There are two lifeguards there, so if your kids can swim, all you do is lie down and relax.

Many activities to do. The Mini disco is great for kids and they allow our kids to be in the shows. My daughter is impressed by the fact that the real Belle in the Princess Diaries has touched her!!! People are very friendly and welcoming.

Just walking barefoot in the resort all the time is a real joy!

It is a wonderful resort!
The fact that we return every year says it all. Enjoy it!
