“Fantastic Time!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013

Staying at the Luxury Bahia Principe Esmeralda was a great experience. I can honestly say it was one of my best vacations. I travelled with 2 other girls and we shared 1 room, I was a little worried about the size of the room between 3 of us however it was great size wise – if you are travelling with 3 and one of you will be sleeping on the “pull out bed/couch” beware it is actually not a pull out couch at all!

The beach was cleaned nightly and was always well maintained, unlike the pool you can get a chair very easily as there is an attendant there that will find you a spot and if you do not like the spot move the chairs for you. We always found the same attendant and he remembered that we liked to be closer to the shore and always took us to the same type of seating. As I mentioned you need to get a chair early near the pool. I was up and out every morning around 7:30 am and often got the last set of chairs under the covered gazebo. In the afternoon it is almost impossible to get ANY chair at all around the pool; gazebo or not.

The food was great – the best restaurant that we went to was the French restaurant at the Ambar, the service and food were excellent! I recommend getting the banana flambé; not only is it delicious but it is also entertaining! The chef comes to your table and prepares it in front of you!
The disco is not great. We went on Americano night and there was no Americano music, also the age is supposed to be 18+ but there were definitely a few 14 year olds in there! Although this was one of my best vacations it was also very confusing! I think the front desk staff should all be fully bilingual – I do not feel all the staff has to be but it would help if the front desk staff were. I feel that we missed out on a few activities we wanted to try and were offered to us by our travel agent but getting information at the resort was difficult. For example it was very difficult to find out where the dancing lessons are – eventually (by fluke) we found out they were on the beach. That being said there were lots of employees that went above & beyond and tried to help make our stay as wonderful as possible. Wander (Jasmin), Luis (Jasmin) & Jorge (Bella Italia) made sure all of our questions were answered if they could not help themselves & to be honest were more help than the front desk.

One thing I would like to touch on for anyone travelling anywhere is respect. I felt a lot of travellers were treating the grounds and staff poorly. For example, I saw people peeing on the palm trees (seriously there are tons of bathrooms – NOT necessary!) and yelling at the staff for not seating them at an a la carte without a reservation.

I have already recommended this resort to family and friends and would love to go back! A few tips to keep in mind:
-Save yourself a beach chair
-Make reservations for dinner (2 weeks in advance) & if you book with Air Canada you can book a reservation for each day you are there
-You can also make room reservations – there are no elevators so if you have small children or have difficulty with stairs request a ground level suite
-If you want new towels I suggest going as soon as the hut opens as they run out of towels quickly
-If possible find out in advance from your travel agent any activities you want to do as it is difficult while there
-Do not dwell too much on weather forecasts – they forecasted thunder and rain the whole time I was there (June 22 – 29) and it rained 2 times in the day/evening – 1 day during dinner and 1 day for a few hours but it was light and we still stayed in the ocean and pool
-Pack your bug spray! There are lots of mosquitos in the evening/night

Save travels and have fun!

The adventure started on the 19th on June. We arrived at the hotel were we received a cold drink, even though we were not yet check-ed in :).
We were picked-up by VICTOR the buttler, one of the best persons in the resort. He led us to our room, which he specially prepared for Honey Moon!!! (sign on the dor, roses, fruits, ..a bottel of rom..).
we also received from the resort two t-shirts as gift. The male t-shirt was not the proper size and Victor helped us change it.. (10X VICTOR)
all the personal of the resort was friendly, and help full.. (and for a commun tip, the were like family)
I do not consider it necessary to book the separate dinners, at the ä la carte restorants, due to the fact that the food and drinks at the Jasmine are enough.. and prety much the same.
There was a nice guy here also, but i do not remember his name right now.. i will return on this.
I/ we strongly recomand the place!!!
So this was it.. we will try also the other hotels from the groop!!
The Couple from 97205..

Room Tip: all the rooms are the same! quiet, large and clean

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

We stayed here during the first week of July 2013. We are a young family with two kids under 4.

Positives:
- Good food for all-inclusive standard. Yes, a bit repetitive but quality and taste is good. If your are vegetarian, not much selection.
- Best beach location compared to other nearby hotels. Clean, free of seaweed.
- Best daily nighttime kids shows I have ever seen in all-inclusive. Full theatrical production of Lion King was outstanding.

Negatives:
- Dirty bath towels - we went through 7 towels each day that are provided daily to only find 1 usable. Most towels have blood stains, rust stains, nail polish stains and unidentified black spots accompanied by yellow circles.
- No fan/exhaust in the bathroom - gets pretty tough to breathe after four people in a row take a shower. Again, not to standards expected from a five star "luxury" hotel.
- No bathing suit drying rack - Hotel actually asks you in a letter not to put out any of your bathing suits or towels outside to dry. I am not sure what they expect people to do with their wet swimsuits, specially with no fan in the bathrooms you would end up with one humid wet room.
- No drinks service around the pool or beach - no one will come around, you have to get your drinks yourself at the main pool bar. Nothing luxurious about that.
- Clogged up toilets on the beach/beach restaurant. One toilet had a broken flushing handle for the whole week we were there. Quite a line up a few times to use one remaining toilet on the beach. Considering the expected capacity of this resort, two toilets on the beach is not enough in my opinion.
- No air conditioning in any public toilets on hotel property, including theater and lobby washrooms. Suffocating to say the least.

Hotel:
Hotel is average. Pretty quiet, you have to take little train to get to Bahia Principe Punta Cana lobby where they have a theater and more action. We took these trains sometimes twice a day and never had to wait more than 5 min max. Very fast and convenient. One thing I wanted to point out is the the seating cushions in the beach restaurant and dining were really neglected and stained, yukky-looking. I think the hotel management made a mistake of the choice of fabric. I've seen better.

Rooms:
Mind you this room review is coming from a germaphobe and a clean obsessed person, so take it with a grain of salt. Pretty dated looking rooms for a resort that was just built 4 years ago (2009). Definitely does not scream "luxury" as much as the resorts name wants you to believe. Lots of stains on the walls and tub, shower and toilet area. Stains all over the seating cushions which again is more of a mistake in fabric selection, not practical. Toilet seat is smaller than the toilet so you actually end up sitting on the exposed area of the toilet. Shower is ok, spacious. I always travel with my own bed sheets and pillows so can't comment on the state of theirs but we did lift the mattress to inspect for bedbugs upon arrival and there were none. The mattress topper had yellow stains all over it, otherwise mattress seemed ok. Also, checkout is at 12pm, if you want to extend its $15 per hour which is a very good rate.

Food:
We are vegetarians so its always a bit of a struggle for us in the Carribian but we always found something we liked here. Food is not bad but not as much vegetable and fruit selection as Riu Hotels offer or even Iberostar, one example is absence of guava and mango served only twice in a week, while other hotels we've been to have those fruits and more at abundance daily. They have great selection of juices.

Beach:
Beach is truly magnificent. Huge and clean. Workers clean it diligently all day long. Water is free of seaweed. Beach is very busy with crowds of people walking back and forth all day long, as well as the beach itself due to the area being shared with massive Bahia Principe Bavaro and Punta Cana. Hotels beach has numerous chairs and a lot of umbrellas. The most umbrellas I have seen in any other resort actually. 10 rows of umbrellas with about 20 umbrellas in a row, about 200 umbrellas. I know many people complain about towel reservation, but all hotels I've been to have this first come first serve game. The hotel's capacity is 510 room so yes 200 umbrellas won't serve everyone but if you come no later than 9am, you will get a spot, if you come later, probably will have to find a spot somewhere under the shade of a palm tree.

Pool:
Very nice and clean. It has an area with shallow entrance for kids as well as a small circle pool for kids adjacent to the side. I have seen many people let their small kids bathe without diapers and no matter how cute it looks (or socially uncomfortable to some) its not pleasant to be rushed off from the pool and pool closed because one of these babies pooped in it. Happened twice during our stay. Not fair to all the hotel guests. Also, not hygienic for the kids. Not sure why people do this.

Kids Waterpark:
You can get there by taking a little train from Esmeralda to Bahia Principe Punta Cana, then get off there and wait outside to transfer to the second train that has a logo "Scouts WaterPark" that will take you there. Trains ride pretty smooth and quick so we never had to wait. Water park is very nice with 6 different types of slides for kids to have fun on. I would say its good for kids 4 years of age and above. If your child is smaller, you will have to make sure to stand at the bottom of each slide and catch them as the water might be a bit deep for them.

Internet only available in the lobby and is super slow.

People:
Most of the staff are amazingly kind and helpful. We tipped but never felt like we had to. A smile goes a long way. We saw many hotel guests act like the hotel workers were somehow "lower" than them in status and expected things done for them. Please remember that every worker is a human and has feelings and if you treat them with respect or at least a smile, same with be returned to you.

Overall, if it's your first time in the Dominican, you will love this place. If you have stayed in any new RIU or Hard Rock Hotels, don't come here.

I say check out Riu Palace Bavaro Punta Cana first.

This hotel is absolutely stunning, from the pool area to the lobby in the hotel, you feel like you're in paradise. The resort is very clean and the rooms are spacious. The resort feels very cozy because you have a pool area all around the rooms and the beach is very close to everything. They do a great job in making you feel comfortable and at home. The food was good, but you have to make a reservation for the restaurants before you go there or else you're going to be eating buffet every night. The only thing I did not like was the service in the pool area. The bartenders are not friendly and the drinks are not that good either. Otherwise, it was a great vacation and I would definitely return.

Our first trip in Dominican Republic and definitely we go back there next year. We just came back a week ago, we stayed there for a week from June 22nd to 29th. The beach is beautiful, so many palm trees on the beach and also lots of palapas, in case you like to stay on the shed. Water is clear blue, so warm and we had a great time, couple of days we got nice waves too. The resort is gorgeous, lots of vegetation and beautiful garden, they really take care of them and making they best to please your eyes! Everything there is very clean from the rooms to the lobby area and restaurants. We had our room cleaned twice a day, our room made Hilaria, was doing a great job, beautiful towel arrangements on bed, rose petals and flowers, having a feeling you are in honeymoon, after 16 years of marriage.... Also, at the arrival they were having nice multicolor balloons to welcome you in the room. The room looks exactly like the picture displayed on the website, bathroom is amazing, nice hot tab, excellent shower, and the amenities were replenished every day. Not much to complain, I found out after we got home that thy have a pillow menu, which is very helpful for our next trip, the pillow were a bit small and if I knew I would ask for. Also the 24 hours room service, was very helpful after we arrived there, being late after 11pm, not that many restaurants opened, however we took advantage of this extra service and was great!
The foods were very good at all restaurants, buffet and a la cart as well. We eat breakfast and lunch at Los Geranios restaurant, beautiful patio with pool and garden view and great food. The service there was first class, we got served every day by Francesco and Enrique, they were amazing, every day before even approaching, they knew already were we are going to set to pull out the chair for us and welcoming to have a good time in the restaurant. From the first day, they learned what we like to drink and every day hey will have the wine ready, we love rose wine and there is a plenty of a good quality French/ Spanish wine selection. We will highly recommend you to ask for them, very hard working guys, great customer service and amazing how they keep up with a great work every day. They were doing their best to pleased you and make you happy.
The guest service very good, Diana was helping us booking our a la cart restaurants and excellent service. Every day passing by she would recognize you and greeting us with a nice smile and OLA!
Highly recommend the French a la cart from Ambar, service and food exceed expectation.
Overall, after visiting Jamaica and Cuba, this is the best resort we had for our vacation and definitely recommend it and we go back there!

Please makesure you visit this hotel if travelling to the dominican republic, it is everything you could want in a hotel and more. I travelled on crutches so as you could imagine was difficult getting around and was anxious as to wether the experience would be tarnished as a result. This was not the case, everyone was extremely pleasant always happy and made you feel welcome. The food is nice, restaurants are all to cater to different tastes so you will not be disappointed. In particular if visiting this hotel please see a butler by the name of "VICTOR" he is absolutely amazing and was really helpful to me throughout my trip. Any assistants needed whilst out here he is your man. All in all it is a very pleasant experience and i rate it a 5star excellence.
