Staying at the Luxury Bahia Principe Esmeralda was a great experience. I can honestly say it was one of my best vacations. I travelled with 2 other girls and we shared 1 room, I was a little worried about the size of the room between 3 of us however it was great size wise – if you are travelling with 3 and one of you will be sleeping on the “pull out bed/couch” beware it is actually not a pull out couch at all!
The beach was cleaned nightly and was always well maintained, unlike the pool you can get a chair very easily as there is an attendant there that will find you a spot and if you do not like the spot move the chairs for you. We always found the same attendant and he remembered that we liked to be closer to the shore and always took us to the same type of seating. As I mentioned you need to get a chair early near the pool. I was up and out every morning around 7:30 am and often got the last set of chairs under the covered gazebo. In the afternoon it is almost impossible to get ANY chair at all around the pool; gazebo or not.
The food was great – the best restaurant that we went to was the French restaurant at the Ambar, the service and food were excellent! I recommend getting the banana flambé; not only is it delicious but it is also entertaining! The chef comes to your table and prepares it in front of you!
The disco is not great. We went on Americano night and there was no Americano music, also the age is supposed to be 18+ but there were definitely a few 14 year olds in there! Although this was one of my best vacations it was also very confusing! I think the front desk staff should all be fully bilingual – I do not feel all the staff has to be but it would help if the front desk staff were. I feel that we missed out on a few activities we wanted to try and were offered to us by our travel agent but getting information at the resort was difficult. For example it was very difficult to find out where the dancing lessons are – eventually (by fluke) we found out they were on the beach. That being said there were lots of employees that went above & beyond and tried to help make our stay as wonderful as possible. Wander (Jasmin), Luis (Jasmin) & Jorge (Bella Italia) made sure all of our questions were answered if they could not help themselves & to be honest were more help than the front desk.
One thing I would like to touch on for anyone travelling anywhere is respect. I felt a lot of travellers were treating the grounds and staff poorly. For example, I saw people peeing on the palm trees (seriously there are tons of bathrooms – NOT necessary!) and yelling at the staff for not seating them at an a la carte without a reservation.
I have already recommended this resort to family and friends and would love to go back! A few tips to keep in mind:
-Save yourself a beach chair
-Make reservations for dinner (2 weeks in advance) & if you book with Air Canada you can book a reservation for each day you are there
-You can also make room reservations – there are no elevators so if you have small children or have difficulty with stairs request a ground level suite
-If you want new towels I suggest going as soon as the hut opens as they run out of towels quickly
-If possible find out in advance from your travel agent any activities you want to do as it is difficult while there
-Do not dwell too much on weather forecasts – they forecasted thunder and rain the whole time I was there (June 22 – 29) and it rained 2 times in the day/evening – 1 day during dinner and 1 day for a few hours but it was light and we still stayed in the ocean and pool
-Pack your bug spray! There are lots of mosquitos in the evening/night
Save travels and have fun!
