I was here from Oct. 26 to Nov.02 - 2012. I have nothing but great things to say about the food to me relaxing, either at the pool or beach. Staff are very helpful and friendly with me! So yes love the spot & I hope to go again this winter of 2013 . I online at the resort paid $40 dollars US with credit card for 7 days of 24 hours of access and then could view all football matches or as they say in Canada soccer from England. I`m a Liverpool fc fan so nice to in the room or poolside to be connected. Therefore with skpe show my family back home what they are missing giggle !!

Stayed at Iberostar Grand in Punta Cana last year, and that place fully deserves its all 5 stars and number 1 tripadvisor hotel status in Punta Cana.

This place is not at all what you might expect, so if you are hoping for a place with warm, welcoming staff, fully stocked bar, and good service, spend the extra $100 or so and go to Iberostar instead.

No problem travelling from the airport to Esmeralda, even with the bus from the main lobby at Gran Bahia Principe to the Esmeralda section. Check-in at the Esmeralda was a whole other story. We arrived at noon, 3 of us in two separate rooms. We had sent in our room reservations to be away from the horrible construction 3 weeks in advance and had an additional 2 passengers with their own room who at the last minute were not able to travel with us. Somehow, they pretended our entire reservation was canceled and we were told no rooms were available at all. Once we started speaking spanish, one of us being fluent in spanish, they stopped being so rude. I asked them if i could use their phone to call the agency to confirm our rooms were never canceled, and they started laughing until i began calling from my work phone which had international connection and then they said our rooms weren't canceled. They told us our rooms weren't ready, saying check in was not until 3pm and we were told to go and have lunch. When we came back, we were given adjointing rooms which was nice but in the worst possible section of the hotel - on the ground floor at the edge of the construction. It was so bad, the rooms were vibrating about 9am to 7pm every day.

The room - the rooms were spacious and clean. However, mini bar was horrible. We left numerous notes and tips asking for beer and vodka and only by the 2nd to last day and after $10 in tips were given what we wanted. Not really an all-inclusive service.

Lunch at Jazmin was quite a shame. The self-serve buffet was fine, but the service was completely lacking. We had to ask for coffee 3x. We received better attention at the snack place.

Again an example of horrible service was our dining experience at the Italian restautant on the 2nd night. We were barely done with our main course, and harassed by two servers to complete these reviews on how good their food and service were. We were only going to give a 4 out of 5-star review on the food for not being great, and 5 on the rest, but they refused to accept it and tried to bully us into making everything a 5-star. At that point my friend told them she'd rip her review if she can't be honest so one guy took her review and pocketed it. I tried to explain what a horrible impression this gave in spanish to the other guy who stayed behind. We were so aggravated we even forgot all about dessert. Horrible.

Gym - complete waste of space, don't even bother. Enough said.

Towels - OMG don't even get us started. You pay for a supposed 4-5 star experience, but are told you can only take 1 - not two - 1 towel per person and only at the beginning of the day and then can only get clean ones if you bring the dirty ones back to them by the pool. So go ahead and fetch it back at the private beach or in your room because they won't give you another one. Maybe we should wash them ourselves too? I have never experienced that ANYWHERE before.

The other dining experiences and lunches were okay, nothing spectacular but also nothing horrible. However, the customer service is what really makes a huge difference and was extremely beyond poor at the Esmeralda. Staff at the cheaper adjoining hotel areas, such as Bavaro Principe, were soooooo much nicer and friendlier. That's all that matters, is to be treated nicely and get a smile when you are on vacation.

To clarify, staff at the bars including the pool and beach service were great. It was all the servers at the dining areas and reception that were horrible.

We will absolutely never return.

Once again the friendly and courteous staff of Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda exceeded my expectations. My visit To Esmeralda in October 2012 was my fourth. I am taken by surprise each time. The entire staff work together to create a family, make yourself at home atmosphere and highly succeed in doing so.They go out of their way to make your vacation a memorable one. Many stafff share smiles, song, and dance with guests. It is a delight to be around them. The hotel, grounds and beach are very clean and well maintained. The day and night maids ensure the hotel rooms are clean and fresh towels are available. Repairs are even taken care of if needed. A wide variety of food is offered at the Jazmin buffet and is centralized within the Esmeralda complex. Easy to get to. Foods are prepared and cooked to perfection and trays are always filled. Evening dinners are set by themes which gives a even wider variety of foods to try. A la Carte dining is elegant and offers a great mix of different cultural choices. Bella Italia in Esmeralda area is a favourite along with Don Pablo Gourmet located in Ambar area. Maiko Japanese restaurant is also a fun interesting experience. Chefs cook right in front of the table of guests and make the evening entertaining. Esmeralda is a growing hotel and has many srevices to offer within it's own complex.Touring by trolly throughout the Gran Bahia Principe is an offered service to visit market vendors, shop boutiques, disco dance, or take in theatre shows. All of which is added fun to your vacation.
Many thanks to staff for your generous service and giving me another spectacular vacation.

Your dedication to your work is quite apparant. Your staff servers reflect your positive work ethic. Congratulations! Jazmin buffet staff are a true family unit.
Thanks to Anthony for sharing the Bahia spa information which was spectacular and for my favourite bottle of white Chardonnay wine at the Bella Italia. It was perfect with my delicious dinner.
Thanks to Emmanuel Pena Zhira And Jorge Abreu for welcoming me to Ambar lobby when I came to visit. You go over and above to ensure your guests are pleased. Thank you for the special bubble bath, and champange you set up through the butler service. Excellent service! The gift of my favourite white Chardonnay wine was a special surprise touch. I can't thank you enough. Look forward to seeing you my next return.
Special thanks to Ramon Diaz for the fabulous butler service. On arrival Ramon greets, escourts guests and shares all the hotel information about the rooms and the Esmeralda complex and it's services. The surprise bubble baths, candles, flowers, towel decor, and champange were amazing. It was a pleasant surprise throughout the week to recieve scented pillows from the butler staff. I can"t thank Ramon enough for answering my request to have bananas in my room daily. We researched resorts for months and we didn't regret our choice for a minute.Very beautiful and so clean. The room was more than we expected; so comfortable, clean and spacious. The jacuzzi whirlpool tub is out of this world! Room 90020 in building 90 was the best location! Pools and beach are so amazing. It was everything we hoped for and far more. The food and restaurant choices were excellent (Jose and Augusto are FABULOUS - thank you!!), especially The Maiko and Bella Italia.Massage on the beach was a piece of heaven.Walk to the right down the beach and find shops for souveniers...a must-see tourist experience! Don't leave without seeing the Michael Jackson show. It will absolutely blow your mind. Night life is best when you take the ride over to the Punta Cana shops and lobby bar.Esmeralda is a more quaint location if you prefer a smaller, quieter crowd. Huts on the beach are awesome for an afternoon nap!!! Never a problem finding a chair.Tip well for those who go out of their way to provide you with excellent customer service. "Ones" go a long way! So many people work extremely hard and long hours/days in a row at the resort. The grounds and landscaping make you feel like you're in a tropical paradise. Adult pool section and swim-up bars give you so many choices! Many thanks to our Butler Marilennis Who made our anniversary memorable with swans, chocolates, bubbles and heart shaped rose petals! Love every minute of it...would highly recommend this getaway destination!

We traveled with an 8-month old baby - the territory was very small, so it was easy to bring all the stuff (towels, playpen, toys, etc.) from the room to the pool, the beach was just there, too - and the restaurant and snack bar right around the corner. They take good care of the territory, the lawns are immaculate and the bushes blossom.

However, we had bad customer service experience. Front desk were rude and inattentive. "Oh, your key stopped working? How long have you been here? Well, yes, they stop working after 8 days for security reasons" - well, a heads-up would have been nice! And that is just one example. No apology, no nothing.

The buildings are all standing in one row, so there is this sort of a very long corridor. And the maids and other hotel employees spend the day chatting across the corridor. Our baby takes three naps a day and it was never quiet during those naps - there was always someone shouting right out our door.

Or take a la carte restaurants - you are seated, someone appears at your table and announces that they will be your host for tonight - only never to be seen again. Then a barrage of people approach your table, it seems like they have some hidden hierarchy game there, so you get totally lost: whom did you ask for water, who promised you a drink, etc. Once I got my drink when I finished my meal. Once I switched sides of the table and asked them to move everything to my side of the table - the waiter put the place-mat metal plate in front of me without moving the centerpiece - so that this plate was one third hanging off the edge of the table - and then started trying to squeeze the glasses and the forks there, too. Right, too much work - moving the centerpiece.

The hotel's manager was really bad, too. What happened was that they got an emergency situation, something to do with the water pipe. As the result we got an excavator and a dozen of workers right out our balcony on the ground floor. Did we get an apology notice? No. A phone call, suggesting we should move? No. We called them towards the evening to ask if anything is going to be done about it - and were told we will be getting a new room the following day. At first we were satisfied, but when we realized that the excavation won't stop for the night hours, we called the front desk again and, as always, they didn't care.

They told us to come at 9 am the following day. We came and they told us to come back at 10:30. And then they told us to come back at 1. And then at 3. They finally moved our luggage to the new room at 4 - and they still forgot the crib! We spent the whole day running to the front desk, never sure where to go for our baby's naps. And the front desk guys just never cared.

What was even more disappointing, was the hotel's manager. We went to the guest services desk to complain - and they called for the hotel manager. He arrived and at first didn't even acknowledge us. He spoke to the guest services rep asking why she couldn't deal with us on her own (I can understand a little bit of Spanish). Then he looked at us and remained standing, towering above us. I told him that while I understood that emergencies happen, I wasn't happy that they didn't make the effort to communicate with us - to apologize or provide any next step information. He interrupted me (it's very easy to talk down when you are standing in a white shirt and tie over someone barely clothed) and told me that this was an emergency, but they are willing to give me a free spa service. Well, I don't want any spa service - I paid for a restful vacation, not a room next to an excavation site! Anyway, we got a couple of babysitting sessions for free, but we felt like a pain in his butt. And, by the way, he never apologized - only gave excuses.

And, by the way, the new room we got was an adjoining one - with a door to the room next to us. What were they thinking? While our neighbours were good and fairly quiet and didn't bother us (although we could here them snore and have sex etc.) - I am sure they didn't appreciate a baby waking them up a few times a night.

And then we received a note apologizing for some repair works in the beach area. Only that didn't bother us at all - however, the start of repairs in the restaurant right next to the pool (sledgehammer and drill all day long) did bother us a lot. There were no notes or apologies for that.

And then on my last day there I ate lunch in the Bahia Punta Cana's buffet (Orquidea, I believe) and as I was finishing me meal, something felt wrong. By the time I reached the airport, something was definitely wrong. And then I had the worst flight in my whole life - I spent the whole flight actively using one air sickness bag after another, running to use the bathroom, disregarding the seatbelt signs. We never left the hotel territory during our stay, so I definitely got poisoned by the food. It's been almost 2 days now, and I am still not totally over the poisoning.

What did I say? The small territory was a plus? Well, not even that anymore. They are expanding the territory, adding more buildings, one more pool and expanding the buffet.

NEVER AGAIN.

Room Tip: Buildings 90, 91, 92 - all other are too close to construction and too far from the pool. I think up...
