Everything you read about this hotel and staff is true so I will not bang on about all the good points as there are many I'll just tell you about the negatives
Whilst we were there all four of us were poorly with gastroenteritis,I was hospitalised for 2 days.i would like to say this was a one off case but it was not, the more people we spoke to we realised it was widespread.the problem is this happened on the 3rd day of our holiday and ruined the rest of our stay as we where on a plain diet with no alcohol.
Where this came from no one seems to know was it the food pool or poor hygiene by other guest..?
The hotel did its best to try and irradicate this problem.extra cleaning and the like.
The Thomas cook re disappeared for the first week and was replaced by Helen who tried her best to sort thing out for us although a little late.
Just one extra quick point Louis was a absolute pain. From standing over us telling us to put excellent in the staff review survey. To trying to sing and take our cutlery before we had finished the meal.and why he couldn't understand we would like a glass of water for breakfast is beyond me

We stayed at the Emeralda Sept. 30 - Oct 6. We have been 6 times to the Gran Bahia in Punta Cana. We are not novice travellers to the south and we have always had a great experience at the GBPs in Punta Cana. Although we normally would have registered at the Ambar we had our DIL and granddaughter with us so we booked with the Royal Golder, we were upgraded to the Esmeralda. It was wonderful. The staff were extemely attentitive to our needs, and service was excellent. Food was good, a la cartes were excellent. Our DIL and granddaughter enjoyed their experience very much and we are now scared that we have created monsters that want to go to the GBP resorts with us from now until we can't travel anymore. Can't say enough how much we love it there. You couldn't ask for better beaches, facilties and service. We will return - looking for the GBP in Jamaica within the next couple of weeks. Can't wait.

Room Tip: get close to the beach - you can always take a trolley to the main lobbey

Stayed in this resort Oct 2012. Beautifully kept resort, staff could not do enough for us. Must mention the EXCELLENT Hector at the Don Pablo restaurant, Nothing, I mean NOTHING was too much trouble for him to fix for us. Very professional and very friendly, honestly if I owned a restaurant I would have hired him on the spot. Have to mention the brilliant Eva, Josefina and Maria from the Esmeralda lobby, they made any visit to the lobby worthwhile, their service was terrific, not to forget how lovely and friendly they were. In the main Esmeralda buffet (which became our favourite eating place because of the staff), must mention BIg Luis (who was magic), Augusto (who was funny), Benjamin, Julio, Wee Luis, Paula and Celeste, These people made the main buffet in particular a brilliant place to eat and relax, indeed, we went there sometimes just to chill after a long day. Also have to say a big thanks to our wonderful maids, particularly Salange, and our Butler (name escapes me). The resort was all round excellent, but their staff are by far their prized asset. They made our holiday absolutely wonderful, we miss them so much and feel privileged to have met them. Also loved speaking to Jorge and Johnny from the Privilege club. Thank you all so much for making this holiday a dream come true, we WILL be back. For me I cannot fault anything about the resort. Having said that the service in the EL OLIVO was very slow( started at 8:30, didn't receive main course til 10:00) and I did find what appeared to be plastic shrink wrap in my chicken supreme. Decided not to embarrass staff or other diners, but don't find this acceptable. When staff were informed, were very apologetic, asked could they get us anything, to which we asked for coffee, which still hadn't arrived 20 mins later so we left. The rooms were absolutely beautiful, as was everything about the resort. To couples going without children, you might find the over 18's only Ambar section more to your liking, but I can't tell you much about the service there, which I assume is also excellent. I would recommend this resort to (Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda or Ambar) to anyone as I can just about guarantee you will have the time of your lives, we certainly did! Thank you Don Pablo, your resort was immaculate and your staff are top class!

What can I say, but everything was A1 from start to finish. The hotel, the people, the beach, the food was outstanding. The weather was also perfect. We went to several a la Cartes, but my favourite was the "Garden Grill". The steak was perfect. They do not skimp on the alcohol. Everyone seems to want to please you. There are several singing waiters. With every turn you will find a bar or a snack bar. The shows were great. My favourite was Michel Jackson & Circus. The room was outstanding. So pretty with a canopy bed and the even had balloons on the bed posts. Had chocolates on our pillows. The mini bar is stocked full daily. You can even order scented pillows. They even leave you a bag of chips. The had a rain Forrest shower head and nice hot water. The landscaping was perfection. Lots of beautiful pictures to be taken. There are a few vendors on the beach, but if you say no thank you, they just walk away. The pools are superb and you can have quite or party pools. Found an amazing adult pool with 3 hot tubs inside. Bingo in the water every afternoon. Water exercise every day. Everyone that works there seem to love their job. We went on the Outback Safari tour. Well worth the money. Get to see a school, visit a home, good lunch and boogie board on an amazing beach. Angel was an amazing guide. I could go on and on. If you want an amazing trip try this hotel. My husband and I will return for our 30th wedding anniversary next year. Went week of Oct 7, 2012.

Room Tip: All rooms are good. We stayed in block 90, which is closest to beach. The doors are on the inside...

We return to the esmerelda because of the very positive experience we had during our last holiday in the spring of 2012. This time we returned with our best friends.
WEATHER - we were a little concerned about a October visit because of hurricane season - a non issue, we had hot weather sun most of the time - afternoon cloud and storms did roll through on 4 of the 7 days, and all the weather forcast showed thunderstorms and clouds for our 7 days but it would have been more accurate showing sun for 7 days. ROOMS - a little trouble getting our room right with our friends, our trave agent requested ajoining rooms - we also sent an advance note to the hotel but our first priority was building location, King bed and higher floor near our friends. we got ajoining rooms but our friends didn't get a king - the Esmerelda staff moved us on our 2nd day....our advise is be very clear as to your most important requests, this will them get it right (Thank you front dest Manager ). CONSTRUCTION - we were advised by our travel agent after booking that there would be some construction, building 93 is close to it... hence our request for building 90,91. Also the lunch - outdoor buffet was being renovated - building noise was pretty significant during our last 2 days. The beach bar was also being taken down and this area was roped off. I'm hoping that the expansion of more rooms wont take away from the benefits we've come to enjoy (rooms close to the beach,beaches not really over crowded, restraurants not overcrowded etc. ).
FOOD - again was exceptional for an all inclusive - a la carts were also amazing. DEEP SEA FISHING - was well organized, booked through the hotel staff (Iassac) $105 each - Albert and I caught 4 fish each - Maui Maui ( 8 - 20 lbs ) the 35 foot fishing boat was a little tired and the cabin dirty and old but boy we had fun and the fishing guide did an amazing job - 30 fish into the boat in 4 hrs. SICKNESS - unfortunately many people picked up a bug - virus - flu this week ? the "runs" every 45 min for two days - cramps and flu symtoms the first day, all 4 of us got it and we heard of at least 9 others, would be really interested in finding out what was going around. We were still able to enjoy the beach however lower apetite and many washroom breaks lasted 5 days for me. First time ever this has happen to us - but who knows how we picked it up - on the flight ? food ? another guest ? We didn't drink the water and the hotel is extremely clean, food is also well cooled and or heated as needed - just one of those things that can happen. GOING BACK ASAP, this is a great resort , great staff ( Milfi (butler) and Augosto (funny server) were excellent)

For anyone travelling to Gran Bahia Esmeralda you will have the most amazing time. Everything about it is excellent and we miss it already!
Luis in the Jasmine Buffet used to dance us to our seats, Augusto was really funny and nice, all of the staff in the resort couldnt do enough for you to make sure you enjoyed your holiday. Regards to Milfi our butler who made our wedding anniversary extra special, hope she has a lovely wedding herself next month! Albania who arranged our Block 90 pool view room and Domingo for reserving a la cartes, thank you and best wishes to you all!
Josephina and the rest of the ladies in the outside courtyard area, i could go on and on.

We also met some amazing holidaymakers and had such a good time we're looking to return next year

If the outside courtyard drinks area was a little better lit in the evening it would be perfect, not bad if thats the only negative comment is it!

So jealous of anyone about to go there, roll on next year, only 50 weeks to go!

We have spent two wonderful weeks at Esmeralda. The room and bathroom are very spacious. The way the hotel is organized is absolutely perfect for families with young kids as everything is close by.

Variety of restaurants, delicious food, very friendly staff. Gifts in the room at the beginning and then every night chocolate. A butler always there for you.

You realy have to go to experience it as words can't describe the beauty of BP.

We absolutely loved the Mini Club shows. My daughter is five and every night she danced on stage. She even took part in their two shows: Lion King and Princesses Diaries. Just seeing her on stage, so delightful!! Thank you Maxi and your coworker!

We were not surprised that all the other tourists we talked to were there for the second, third time. Once you go, you keep going!
