“Food and maintenance problems, management did not follow up on Haiti relief until pressured”
Reviewed January 25, 2010

While the resort setting is beautiful, the rooms are adequately proportioned, there are numerous leisure activities, and the support staff was very friendly and professional, we unfortunately encountered some serious problems. First and foremost, medical supplies (over 150 lbs! ) brought by many in our group for Haiti earthquake victims were almost not delivered in a timely manner even though we were promised based on several email communications with resort mangers prior to our arrival that arrangements with the Red Cross would be made. When we arrived nothing had been arranged and no mechanisms were in place to either collect, store, or deliver the supplies. Sadly, after almost 3 days of exhaustive efforts on OUR parts, multiple phone calls to the Red Cross in Santo Domingo (who stated urgent need for the supplies) the resort managers reluctantly provided a driver for us to deliver the supplies to a Red Cross station only 50 min away. Second, after waiting over an hour for our room upon check- in we were placed in an a room that was unbearably contaminated with mold and we had to move to another. Third, I suffered along with other guests in my party from apparent food poisoning. We all came down with the same symptoms- nausea, vomiting and diarrhea after eating the same food at the same place. Lastly, upon check-in we were highly pressured to upgrade to the preferred status for over $100/night more even though we already paying a substantial amount for the accommodations we booked.

This was a beautiful resort. My mother husband and I went for a winter getaway. We went through Apple vacations. They had an apple rating of 6 golden apples. While the resort was nice it wasn't a 6 golden apple resort.
The food wasn't inedible but it was far from good. We ate in the buffet as well as specialty restaurants and didn't get anything we enjoyed eating. The servers didn't come around as much as you needed. While at the pool or beach very seldom did anyone come around to get your drink order.
My husband and I got a couples massage and enjoyed that thoroughly. The staff at the spa did a wonderful job!
While we all had a great time this resort was kind of in the middle of the scale for us. I don't think I'll be returning.

My wife and 2 kids (3 years and 10 months) spent 4 nights at the resort. The resort does have its good and bad, but would not say it is a GREAT resort.

The good parts of the resort were the grounds, pool, entertainment and the service. The grounds of the resort were very well maintained and very clean. They have one big pool and another pool for Preferrend Club Rooms. Both pools were clean and was never crowded. There were plenty of beach chairs and lounges were available to bask in the sun. There were a lot of umbrellas too if you don't like to sun directly on you. The resort also made it an effort to entertain its guests throughout the day. They distribute flyers at the end of each day describing the events for the next day. Though we never got to go to these events personally, I am assuming they were good. Lastly, the service was very good and the people working there will go out of their way to help you.

Now comes the bad part. The resort seems to have a very bad mold problem and the food is mediocre.

We had reserved a Tropical Deluxe room and we were very happy when we checked in. However, as we got to explore the room, we felt the room was very musty and the curtains had a very bad odor. Since my son was 10 months old we asked for a crib. They delivered it to us immediately and we decided to take a nap as we got there at 1pm. That night my son started throwing up and had trouble breathing.

Luckily, they have a on site doctor and we took him to the doctor at 2 in the morning. They charge you $125 for the visit. In case of a real emergency you would have to be airlifted to the nearest hospital. Fortunately, my son was not required to go to the hospital and was given some anitbiotics. The next day we decided to upgrade to a Honeymoon Suite which was in the Preferred Club area for $100 more a night. This room was much cleaner and more spacious. My kids had more room to play and the room was not musty. What we realized was that rooms that do not get sun light and are not propperly cross ventilated become damp because of the humidity and thereby leading to mold growth. We later checked my son's crib bedding and found it to moldy throughout below the clean white sheets. This must have caused an allergic reaction on him.

As for the food, all I can say is that it is edible. Don't expect too much from the food. My daugther ended up getting sick and being down throughout the 5 days we were there. The reason we came to this resort was for a wedding and a lot of the guests in our wedding party got sick. The groom's father almost did not make it to the wedding because he got it the worst.

Though the resort is good in some aspects, it definitely needs to clean up its act with the mold issue and the food.

The Dreams is a beautiful hotel that is very well run and we were satisfied with our stay. We booked the Preferred Club room, which was absolutely worth the extra money. There is a private pool, private beach with a waitress taking and delivering drink orders, jacuzzi and clubhouse that serves premium liquor, has free internet access and is stocked with snacks throughout the day. Staff was very helpful, friendly and welcoming. The rooms are nice, they stock the minibar daily (included in the package), provide turn down service, and offer free 24 hour room service. They offer many included activities throughout the day, a schedule is delivered to your room each night. The food was good, we found the buffet food to be better prepared than the a la carte restaurants. Disco was OK, but the resort is very nice at night with live music and bars set up around the pool. I would highly reccommend this resort.

The service of the hotel is absolutly out of the ordinary! I usually go to Punta Canada every year and have been to different resorts already, but this one is absolutly extraornidary. Great service, great people, an amazing experience... these are the words that can describe this hotel. I would go again anytime.
The restaurants were amazing: Portofino(italian), El Patio (the mexican), and Coco Cafu (the coffee place with an amazing coffee). I definitly recommend all of them. At the mexican restaurant i received a great service from Ozuna, at the coffee place Yeury and Cristina are the people to go see and at the italian restaurant Rosario is the person I would recommend.
Not only that the service at the restaurants was amazing but the annimation team was one of the best one i have ever seen. In the animation team i recommend all of you to go check out Rai and Richard. They were active non stop and their creativity in the activities they were doing was superb. I did not felt the days passing. The director of the hotel under the name of Pedro was making sure that we would feel welcome, happy with the service, happy with the food, the animation and everything overall. Thus, I can say that all the time there was someone to serve you, to make you feel special, to make you feel content with the choice in hotel and vacation u made.
Therefore, i would not only recommend this hotel to other people but i would also go back anytime.
Thanks to all of u for a great vacation and experience!

The resort was wonderful! Full of fun activities (waiter races, balloon races, kayaking, baseball batting cage, horse shoes and bocche on the beach) all day and night (casino, shows, bars) long!!! We had a great time with the staff...lots of Holas! and Mama Juanas!! I will never forget the staff that we met. They truly made our vacation excellento!! We plan to go back with our 2 teenage children.

Our stay in the preferred section was exceptional. Our Dreams host named Julio Paulino went out of his way to make our stay special. We appreciate his assistance. Also, the tennis pro was great. He worked with my daughter for long periods of time to help her improve her game. We thank the entire staff for making our trip special.
