“Excellent resort”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

Last year we went to the Dreams resort in La Romana. I would say this resort is better as far as the beach, the pools and the grounds are concerned, it is also more compact which is a plus. The rooms are not as up to date but extremely clean and I found the entertainment was more international and better all in all in La Romana. A very good stay where people of all tastes and all backgrounds will be satisfied.

Room Tip: In building 9 pick a room that does not overlook the buffet kitchen area.

5 days in paradise! Dreams Punta Cana is wonderful resort with a fabulous beach location. The rooms were nice, the food was great and there was plenty to keep us busy ~ the pools, the beach, the activities, the shows, water sports.......... We enjoyed everything about Punta Cana but especially the staff that works soooo hard to entertain us and make our stay "excellente"! Special shout outs for Sander Palolo, Lisandro, Elias, Sony, Candyman, David, Gasolina, Woody, Cuchi, Jesus and our lovely evening maid in room 7209. They work morning til night always with a smile and great humor. We miss them already! And cannot wait to go again!!

Reviewed February 27, 2014

I began writing this review while down in the Dominican Republic but got sidetracked. We visited the lovely DR from January 31st until February 9th. We (my wife and I) try to visit the DR at least once per year, sometimes twice, and generally go for the week long all inclusive packages. This time we decided to stay for the ten day package, and I have to say that we were not disappointed. We booked the beautiful Dreams Palm Beach located fifteen minutes from the airport. Did I say that we were not disappointed? I think so! But it is worth reiterating. The following paragraphs will detail our experience with this wonderful place.

Dreams Palm Beach is a family focused resort that is a short drive from the airport (less than 15 minutes) and sits on one of the most pristine stretches of white sand on the island. It has several pools, a fantastic beach area that is scoured several times daily by workers who rake and collect the seaweed. The beach stays in a pristine fashion because of the diligence and care taken to maintain. My wife and I tend to stick to the beach because of the sea breeze but also visit the pools, usually later in the day, for a cool down swim and some refreshments from the swim-up bar. You cannot go wrong with either site, regardless of your preference. The pools are very clean and well maintained. And they are very large with sufficient chair space to accommodate all. The beach area also contains lots of cabanas and recliners for people to access. The only exception to this rule is on the preferred club side where the cabanas or huts are limited as are the chairs, which sometimes causes a little bit of friction between guests. But more on that later. The pool in the preferred club is also somewhat smaller and has limited seating. Get up early enough and you will find a spot! The resort frowns on marking the chairs with towels before 7:30 am and security guards WILL remove items that are placed on the chairs and are left for long periods of time. It is a more than fair policy given the limited space on the preferred club side.

I would suggest that you access the preferred club as part of your package. There are a few perks such as private check-in, a private beach and pool area, access to a private dining room that serves breakfast, lunch; and doubles as the Beach grill in the pm, plush pads on the beach chairs, top-shelf alcohol selection, a private bar, no reservations required at the a la carte restaurants, room service, meal delivery to the beach or poolside, and some great discounts for other paid services such as spas. There is a towel service where you can access dry towels at any time. You do not need to deposit or return a card as the towels are freely available at all times, beginning at 7:30 am. (We would collect ours late in the evening to save a trip down in the morning.) There is even a 10.00 per bottle discount on wines purchased from the wine list at the a la cartes. It is a good deal overall and worth the additional couple of hundred that you pay.

The rooms are clean and well maintained. There are a few cracks and fissues as would be expected of any aging infrastructure. Some may find fault with the fact that the resort is somewhat dated but, if you think about it, other than to drop into a deep sleep after a day of playing, how much time do you actually spend in the room? The condition of the draperies were of little consequence to me! As long as the room is clean, bug free, and the bed is comfortable, what more could you want? The resort does offer you options for garden, pool, and ocean view rooms in a variety of sizes, if you REALLY need to be able to stand and stare. Every room has a balcony with a table and chairs at which to sit and sip a refreshment while recovering from a day of relaxation. The bathrooms are a touch small as the toilet and shower are packed into a fairly tiny area (about 5’ x 6’) but are functional and again, clean. We did have a minor issue with hot water on our first morning but one single call to the desk and it was quickly rectified. We had the king size bed and it was quite comfortable. They offer a down duvet as a cover. There are extra blankets and pillows. The housekeeping staff replenishes the towels twice daily. The room had a well stocked mini-bar with a selection of soft drinks including Presidente beer, and lots of water! They even had staff visiting the room each evening offering a choice of snacks and assorted liquor. And the air conditioning works very well.

There are five restaurants on the resort and all are fantastic! The Asian offers a Teppanyaki Grill and a seated Asian restaurant. The food on both sides is authentic and delicious. The Teppanyaki show is funny and entertaining! The steakhouse (Seaside Grill) offers great seafood selection and excellent beef! A very flavourful and tender product offering. I had the tenderloin and was not disappointed. Of course the French, Italian, and Mexican also offer superb meals. None of the a la cartes disappointed! The buffet is also a great choice as there is a well-rounded and abundant number of selections that will suit the needs of anyone. They serve pizzas that you design to suit your own tastes! A pasta area that is extensive with a great selection of sauces. And there are literally dozens of pork, beef, chicken, and vegetable dishes to choose from. Their breads are fresh and made in house. And the dessert selections? Superb! The only issue with the food was how to keep from adding twenty pounds to a burgeoning waste rather than the usual ten!

There are numerous bars to choose from and all offer a wide variety of drinks from which to choose. From Martinis to the Caribbean sweet drinks to beer. And they offer top shelf liquor at all bars including Bacardi products, Blue Sapphire Gin, Absolut Vodka, and the list goes on. To cap it off, there is usually live entertainment; a pianist, singers, dancers, at the bar locations during the evening. Lots to see and do before heading to the restaurant for Dinner.
The one gem that this resort offers is their staff. That, above all, is the icing on the cake. From the time that you arrive at the front gate to the last minute of your stay, you are cared for as a truly valued guest! Miguel was our welcoming committee and he guided us expertly to the preferred club then carried our bags to our rooms. EVERYONE smiles! Everyone greets you. And it is sincere. The staff works very hard to insure that your stay is an enjoyable experience. The housekeeping staff does an incredible job in keeping the room clean and tidy. The preferred club staff is there to answer your every question and to respond to every whim. The beach/pool staff constantly cycled back and forth from the bar to the beach/pool chairs bringing food or refreshment. If you are in the mood, the entertainment crew offer great games that make you socialize and laugh! The shows in the evenings are well designed and executed. (Check out the Water and Light show in the pool) And the restaurant workers go above and beyond to relax and feed you. Your glass is never unattended or allowed to go empty! All are professional, and seem genuinely happy to be helping you! It should also be mentioned that they work long hours and for extended periods (10 to 12 days at a time). I have noted in a couple of reviews by other patrons that their experience was that the workers ‘expected’ tips and service was sub-standard when the tips did not appear. This was NEVER our experience and we were treated the same whether we tipped or we didn’t. We did! And the workers deserved every dollar that was given to them.

One item of note. The beach is patrolled by hawkers who are bent on selling you everything from poorly made jewelry to dried out cigars to hats to time shares. The Dreams Palm Beach prevents their guests from being harassed by keeping a permanent patrol of security guards on site and whose work it is to keep these folks at bay. The guest chooses whether they wish to interact with the vendors but they are not allowed to approach and harass you into purchasing. A nice touch!

There are some names that come to mind that deserve special mention and you should look out for these folks when you visit this resort. First, there is Alexandra who is the preferred club manager. This young lady is one of the first people that you meet, is the ‘official’ management representative of the resort, and really sets the guests’ expectations. She was always there to answer a question, provide a brilliant smile, and to constantly check to see if there was anything that we needed. Helpful and she had quite a sense of humour. Next were Inez, Faludig, and Kenia. These ladies were on the front lines and sat at the desk and patiently sorted out billing problems, reservations, checkout, etc. Again, always smiles and personality plus! They were always welcoming and eager to help. As example, on checkout evening we found to our surprise that our transport from the resort to the airport had not been arranged by our vacation rep. Kenia took us under her wing and went the extra mile to make sure that we had a ride to the airport and were not left stranded. Then there was Marcia, the talented hostess in the bar area of the preferred club. After a long day at the beach, Marcia always sent us on our way back to our room with a plate of nibbles and a drink. Marcia had a sharp memory ALWAYs knew the drink before I even asked. My Presidente was poured before I traversed the distance between the door and the bar! And there was always that wonderful smile! Next in line are Jose, Reynaldo, and German. These young men constantly cycled from bar to beach to bar and were very adept at taking the empty glass from your hand just as you had consumed the last drop of refreshment. Amazingly personable, funny, and they kept their eye on you. It was not unusual to hear see one of the fellows poke their head under the canopy and chime, “are we alright?” The staff in the preferred club restaurant were exceptional as well! One person of note was Felix who greeted us every morning, seated us, and took our order. My wife loves the fresh fruit, particularly the Passionfruit and would order a fruit plate for breakfast every morning. Felix took careful note of my wife’s predilection for the Passionfruit and insured that there were extra halves for her to enjoy. A little thing perhaps, but it is indicative of the type of service that these great people provided. There are those who would argue that, yes, they are being paid to perform that service. However, I have paid similar prices to stay in similar establishments in Canada and other regions of the world. I can tell you that paying the price doesn’t always guarantee getting the service. Quite the contrary. And then there is Matilda! A great conversationalist and an outstanding person who has ambition! We looked forward to seeing and speaking with her every day. Matilda booked the Spa service for patrons but she went beyond that role by introducing the guest to life in the Dominica. My wife loves and is just learning to speak the Spanish language, and Matilda made a point of engaging here in some conversation every morning which made my wife very happy! Again, a small detail but one that made our stay that much more enjoyable.

There was one down side to the visit that deserves mention and that relates to personal behavior of some guests on the resort. Keep in mind that the resort is not responsible for how people act, and this is not a criticism of the properties nor of the people who operate the resort. It is a commentary on the actions of others and their violation of the basic understanding that the resort is not the property of the guest. Most rational people understand that we are visitors, both to the resort and to the country, that there are acceptable behaviors and should keep in mind that this is the case. We pay to visit but that does not entitle us to any granted rights of ownership. As with any place we visit there are rules and regulations that need to be followed. Much the same as the way we are expected to behave in someone else’s home, a similar understanding exists in another country. One such rule was noted in a previous paragraph, namely that the beach property (read chairs and huts) are first come-first serve; there are no reservations. There is no guarantee that a spot occupied on one day will be yours the next. This rule requires that a level of courtesy be followed and a degree of patience exercised and a knowledge that you do not own any one spot, regardless of the length of your stay or the number of times that you visit. Some people, unfortunately, do not understand that concept and this was evidenced by the three men that arrived at the resort on or about day three of our vacation. I do not dare to call them gentlemen because that would infer that they had some degree of culture and grace. Rather, the trio exhibited an arrogance and sense of entitlement that paralleled the likes of small children denied a toy or treat by a parent. These fellows seemed to expect that because they entered the resort, that all others (guests included) should step aside and defer to their wants and needs, forgetting somewhere in the process that everyone at that resort paid the same or a similar price for access and were “entitled” to similar treatment. The trio expected to walk down the beach at 9:30 am or so and to have their choice of seats or cabanas. Never mind that others might be seated in those spots, the expectation seemed to be that those folks occupying the spot should un-park their bottoms and belongings and vacate so that they could move in. I happened to be one of those persons to which this foolishness was directed. I stood (sat) my ground and didn’t budge. They complained vehemently when they didn’t get their way, they berated and confronted guests and staff, were arrogant and rude, threatened guests and staff, and generally made fools of themselves. Their obnoxious behavior caused those observing that behavior to deride them behind their backs, and their incessant complaining to cause considerable mocking of their conduct. I only mention this because this was the one dull spot in an otherwise stellar stay. The staff tried their best, even in the face of much complaint and vitriol, to assuage the dimwits. The staff smiled, apologized, and went out of their way to treat even these uncouth morons with respect. Imagine how special the ‘regular’ guests felt and are treated?

In summary, this is a fantastic resort! Would we return? In a heartbeat! We have visited a dozen resorts in the Punta Cana region and there are only a handful that we would visit a second time. The Dreams Palm Beach counts as one of those places! Again, the staff are the jewels of the operation! The rest is simply icing on the cake!"

We've been home a week and still pining to be back at Dreams Palm Beach. Flew out for 1 week to attend my best friends wedding! Would have loved to stay another week!! Both the wedding and holiday was amazing! True paradise! For an all inclusive the food was excellent and always there! Felt like there was too much sometimes!! And the restaurants are a nice touch instead of a buffet every night but even the buffet was brilliant! Made to order pizzas... Lobster cooked infront of you... Steak... Prawns and then the usual kids stuff. Japanese restaurant is lots of fun... Italian was really good! Room was brill, only got showered and slept in it so didn't need to be amazing! Yes the wet floor from the shower is slightly annoying but will it ruin your holiday! No! We were quite close to the main lobby so the entertainment at night could disturb you but we found that the air conditioning drowned out the noise anyway.
Maid was great and room was always clean and smelt clean, found no problem with a musty smell at all. Fridge was always restocked daily and if you ran out it would take you couple minutes to "walk yourself" to a bar and get as many drinks as you needed!
I was very nervous about this holiday, it was my first long haul to the Caribbean and had our three year old son with us, I really had nothing to worry about. Felt safe and looked after at all times.
Thank you to Ruben at the buffet for taking time out to speak to our little boy each morning at breakfast.
The onsite photographer was brill too! Got some really lovely photos and the photo shoot is free with no obligation to buy, you just pay for the photos you want and at $10 a photo I didn't think it was bad at all! Very hard limiting yourself on photos tho!
Felt no obligation to tip, although we did as we felt it was much deserved!
The vendors who are allowed on the property were not an issue at all! It was actually really nice as it is set up like a little market! Yes they might ask you if you want to have a look at their items, if you do great, if you don't just smile and say no thank you! Was really not a big deal!
Would go back in a heartbeat!

We came to the dreams palm beach for our 5 year wedding anniversary trip in February. This was our second time at this resort and it only gets better. We love the size of the resort and the people that work here are second to none. We have a couple of people to mention that really stand out above and beyond. The butlers Jose and Alexander are awesome. Especially Jose, he really make you feel like family and will go way out of his way to make sure that your vacation will be worry free and one to remember. Also at the pool bar Reynaldo and Junior are incredible. Not only do they make great drinks but their infectious smiles and over the top personalities make it fun to walk up to the bar and order your next beverage. We've stayed at a few resorts here in Punta Cana and really have found our new home away from home in February.....you won't be disappointed .

We had a nice stay at Dreams. The outside area was beautiful and I loved the beach and the pool.

The room was nice and housekeeping did a good job of keeping it clean but it was a little bit dated and could use some improvements. The sink smelled awful, like backed up sewage and the air conditioning did not go low enough for our liking. The lowest it got was 24 C which is just too warm for me to sleep comfortably. We did call about this and they sent someone to our room but it did not resolve the issue. The bed was OK but the pillows were awful. There were decorative pillows and then two small very flat pillows. I requested more pillows be brought and that helped but some updated pillows would go a long way.

I was constantly on a quest to find water, I think they should keep the mini fridge stocked with more water and just provide soda upon request. I felt like we never had enough water bottles in the room and they were never cold because they were refilled just once a day and took forever to get cold.

The food was just OK. We tried the buffet and the specialty restaurants and enjoyed the Chinese and Japanese most.

Service was also OK. Some people went above and beyond and some seemed robotic and just going through the motions. I expected better service at dinner.

This trip was free for me through my company so I can't complain. We had a really nice time but if given the option I would likely try a different resort next time.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Dreams Palm Beach. We appreciate and value very much your comments and feedback as it is the basis to continue on the line that has taken us very far amongst our competitors and to improve all the things that we must in order to continue to grow even further.

Things such as the room décor and food are things subject to each individual’s perception; nevertheless we respect your opinion. In regards to the water bottles, by simply requesting it we would have happily had replenished your minibar with as many as needed. Furthermore, you are able to get water bottles at any of our bars distributed in our hotel.

It is such a shame your discontent with so many areas of our lovely hotel was not addressed to any of the managers, as we are always around and would have done our best to turn this experience around for you. We apologize we were not able to fulfill your expectations; we hope we have a chance to be able to change your perspective in the near future. For further comments, please do not hesitate to contact us.
