“Hotel had great staff, lovely location, pity our tour operator was Thomson!!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2010

We were travelling on honeymoon to this hotel. It was lovely, although definately not a 5* which was what we were lead to believe. It is colonial style and is tired looking in need of sprucing up a bit. Good size bedrooms with excellent cleaning services. Good range of food, all very fresh. The staff in this hotel really made our honeymoon. My only negative was that we had reserved a suite but were put ina standard double and were not changed other couples were upgraded for free to suites as all double rooms were taken. Neither the hotel or tour operator Rep could fix this for us on our 2 wk honeymoon. I would recommend this hotel but if its luxury your after the Riu puna canta is the place to book. It really just a nice hotel.
I have to say this one of many blunders throughout our travel itinerary. I really would not recommend booking with Thomson and I am currently in the complaint process.

The hotel is really nice, the food is OK. Maybe the beach is not the best in Punta Cana. I thought it was going to be an outstanding hotel, but unfortunatelly it was not. I was told it was the best Riu in Punta Cana, I hope there is a better one!!!

1-front desk extremely helpful and a delight (especially francisco)
2-entertainment was ok, not too many activities during the day or night
3-hotel was very clean and you get promp service
4-pacha disko drinks were not included! and they mostly play salsa, merengue, and bachata music...not very tourist friendly

This was my second time staying at the RIU Macao and I loved it just as much as the first time. Staff couldn't be more pleasant in making you feel right at home. We did one excursion and rode Buggies all over the town. We went to a cave and to a coffee farm (coffee was delicious.) Ask for Antoinito, he's the best bartender in the Dominican!! I would suggest bringing lots of small bills with you to tip, you'll find no one has change. My only complaint was that the beds are sooo uncomfortable, but who cares you don't spend much time in the room. There's not much of a nightlife but you can always walk to the other sister hotels and something is always going on. We always got a chair whether it was at the beach, by the pool, at a show or a bar. Love this place, can't wait to go back!! O, and the Japanese restaurant is awsome.

when you browse via the Internet seeking a "RIU Palace" you are not easily able to find that there are two here in Punta Cana. I wish i knew!!! One is called the Riu Palace Macao, the other the Riu Palace Punta Cana. choose the Punta Cana!! not Macao! I read so many reviews but not one told me this very very important information.

The Punta Cana palace is much nicer, better food, and a very luxurious hotel. The Macao is not a Palace at all AND, you cannot eat or drink at the Riu Palace Punta Cana if you stay at the Macao. YET,...if you stay at the Punta Cana, you access any and all other RIU hotels.

Arrived to pooring rain and it rained for half of my trip. Do NOT go to D.R. in the month of May or early June.
Service pretty good. Drinks okay. Breakfast and lunch boring but Dinners were fantastic at the places you need reservations. Did one hotel excursion, the ATV tour which was very good. They take you to someone's house and try to sell you chocolate and coffee. I didn't buy but tasted very good. Buy any souvenirs near your resort NOT at the airport which is a huge rip off and twice the prices for everything.
As for those hotel reservations, you must make one for dinner every single morning between the hours of 8am and 10am.
p.s. no club or night life at hotel. only shows that end at 11pm. no dancing really.
the only decent show was the "michael jackson" show and one where they danced salsa.
they have ONLY one swimming pool and NO swim up bar at Macao but Punta Cana palace has better pool, 2 jacuzzis, and a swim up bar as well.
I enjoyed Cancun's RIU much better than here in D.R. and would NOT return to this hotel or maybe not even D.R. Cancun much better place to go for similar monies.

The hotel described in the brochure was not quite the same as we booked into. It was described as a five star it was more like a 3/4. It looked tired and in need of a good overhaul . When we where shown to our room after a nine hour flight it seemed perfect until we looked out of our window, it was a building site, the hotel Bambu next door was being renovated no one bothered to tell us, the noise started at 8 in the morning through to 9 at night. we didn't want to complain and lasted a week when we spoke to our Thompson rep Leigh-Ann we were offered another room which again seemed fine until we tried to get out onto our balcony the screen door was jammed we did call reception who sent someone up very quickly to fix it they fixed the toilet at the same time. again we had some unexpected noise from the general air conditioning unit situated outside our second room. Evening entertainment was very poor. On the plus side the staff were very good and they worked extremely hard, as was the food and best of all the weather.
