“Paradise Found!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2013

We stayed at the Riu Palace Macao the first 2 weeks of October. This was our second visit this year. We loved it so much the first time, we had to go back! The staff are wonderful and provided excellent service throughout our stay. They always have a smile and are warm and accommodating. We found the hotel to be spotless and the staff work very hard to keep everything clean and tidy. The grounds, pool areas and beach are always clean thanks to the groundskeepers and pool maintenance team.
We had a well appointed room overlooking the pool and ocean which was always cleaned to a high standard by Julia which we appreciated. The a/c worked well and we found the bed to be very comfortable.
There is a varied selection of food and we have tried the buffet as well as the a la carte restaurants. The food has always been excellent and the desserts are awesome. Our breakfast server Maribel always greeted us with a big smile and excellent service. We especially love the coffee bar.....the iced coffees are superb and served by the sweet, singing waitress.
There was never an issue getting a chair around the pool or at the beach and plenty of shady areas if you don't like the sun. Thank you to Bermudez and Salvador for providing excellent beverage service at the pool.
The entertainment team do a fantastic job of providing a variety of activities everyday from morning til night. A great group of people who long hours and go out of their way to make sure everyone has a good time.......Brenda, Alex, Malvin, Wilkins, Naomi, Manuel and Jefferi .....thank you for entertaining us.....you are the best!!
We love that this resort is adults only and it is smaller than most of the other resorts. It is truly a place to unwind and relax! A big thank you to everyone for making our vacation so special! We will be back again!

Nice hotel, clean, great staff everywhere you go, it's the staff that make the experience special. A couple of negatives that are worth a mention. 1. There is no cover from the sun on the beach unless you follow the shade from the trees, a 5 star hotel should have some type of umbrella, the surrounding 3 and 4 star hotels have better beach facilities. 2. Lunch is served in unbearable heat, no air con, unacceptable. 3. Breakfast and evening meal in the buffet restaurant is really good however if you want to eat in the open air you will be polluted by smokers, there is no facility for non smokers outside, again unacceptable.
This sounds like a negative review however if you can accept the above issues you will not be disappointed. We had a great experience and the negatives didn't really spoil our holiday as there are far more positives. The final test of a great holiday is, would you return ? The answer is no because it didn't meet a 5 star experience, we have stayed in much better 4 star hotels that were cheaper and had a better level of overall facilities.

We went for a fall getaway and had a great time. We have stayed at other RIU Palaces and the Macao definitely met our expectations. The staff was very friendly and accommodating - thanks Wilson and Andreas. Our room was 3250 so we had a great view of the property. Housekeeping was always done in a timely manner and very clean. The restaurants were easy to reserve and we didn't have any issues getting the ones we wanted. The surf and turf at the Steakhouse was a favorite!
The pool and ocean were both very relaxing. We never had trouble getting great chairs with great views.
The only thing that prevents us from marking Excellent was the choice of alcohol. There is only one choice of beer and after a while the rum drinks all tended to taste the same. Even with that one negative we would definitely go back!

We stayed at Riu Palace Macao for one week in October booked via Holiday Hypermarket with Thompson,s Holidays had no problems with flights leg room and food better than Virgin to Florida this year.
Booked private Taxi return for $80 with Dominican Quest driver waiting on arrival and picked up on time, one tip you will get a call while traveling to Hotel to arrange them to meet you as your rep etc just say no thanks you have booked your trips on line etc.
Arrived at reception given cold drink and given room details i had e mailed two weeks before to ask for a top floor room and had e mail saying they would try on arrival, thanks to Riu we were given top floor room pool and sea view and a bottle of rum and card on our anniversary.
We had no problems booking for any of the restaurants but the main buffet was great, rooms clean mini bar topped up staff excellent from reception bar and maids could not fault the Hotel or staff this is our fourth hotel in Dominican will be looking at Riu chain in other destinations in the future. p.s. beach beautiful. Go and enjoy you will not be dissapointed

We booked our trip through Jayne Revell at Beach Bum Vacations. It was a Signature package out of Toronto. Our flight was good and we were out of the airport quickly. We were on a bus and at the hotel within 1.5 hours of landing. Our room wasn't ready as we arrived late morning but the hotel staff was ready for us. They gave us our bracelets and sent us to lunch. By the time we finished the room was ready. We were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and had booked the basic room. When we checked in we were given a complementary upgrade to a poolside/ocean view room. It was a basic room but clean, quiet and very nice. Beds were comfortable. Minibar was restocked daily. Safe was large with plenty of room for all valuables.
The resort was smaller then many Riu's and we really enjoyed the resort size. It was clean and well kept. We loved that it was adults only. The pools were smaller then many but there was plenty of room and always lounge chairs in the sun and shade available. The beach was large and had lots of chairs. It also had lots of Palm trees for shade. Both the pool and beach had wait staff eager to bring you drinks if you wanted.
The buffets were great. All three meals were enjoyable. There was always plenty of food and food selections. Also lots of fish and seafood. We didn't have trouble getting reservations but only went to two of the a-la-carte restaurants. We went to Japanese and the Steak house and enjoyed them both. We had heard mixed reviews but found the food to be very good and the service was great.
The entertainment was also good. We have stayed at many resorts and found this one to have very good nightly shows. We also enjoyed the live music in the lobby. The staff was amazing. Everyone was friendly and very helpful.
The wi-fi was great. Most resort have limited access areas and a daily time limit. The Riu Macao was as advertised. 24 hours and throughout the resort. It even worked well in your room. You did have to log in and have a password every time you used it but it worked great. We had a few slow times during peak use but enjoyed being able to have access whenever you wanted. Didn't use it a ton but it was so nice to have available.
We felt that this resort was a great value for the price and would recommend it to others. We travel several times each year and had no complaints about this property.

My wife and I decided to go on holiday and booked 6 weeks prior to departure on the Thomson web site. We have been to the Dominican on two previous occasions so expectations were high.

We were truly not dissapointed.

I would reccomend you take American dollars for currency. Dont bother with the peso. At the time of our visit 'Oct '13' the visa requirements are $10 on entry into the Dominican and $20 when leaving. The $ can be used everywhere, on and off site.

The Riu Palace Bavaro Macao is an adults only hotel and is a very well appointed hotel. Upon check in we were given a welcome drink and our wrist bands so you can use the hotel facillities immediately. Our room was on the 1st floor and located at the rear of the hotel. We hadn't paid for a superior room which would of meant we overlooked the pool/sea view but never the less apart from the view all the rooms are identical.

The rooms are spacious, bright and well stocked with the bennefits of being All Inclusive. There are the standard spirit optics of whiskey, vodka, rum and brandy in your room and the fridges have plenty of alcohol/soft drinks replenished very frequently.

You are advised NOT to drink the tap water and bottle water is replenished daily.

We had a huge American queen size bed which was great to spread out of an evening.

Our bathroom room was also a wet room with a huge shower which was well used a number of times a day to freshen up. Soap and shower gel is provided with plenty of fresh towels exchanged daily.

There is a fabulous coffee shop on site which is like any high street chain you would find at home. It also provides pastries and sandwiches between meal times.

There are four premium restaurants on site, Italian, Japanese, Steak House and a Contempory/Fusion and the main buffet. There was no limit to the amount of times you use the restaurants and to be truthful they were all nice and I was glad we tried them however the buffet restaurant was my favourite.

In all of our travels over the years, the buffet restaurant produced some fine excellent food as well as simple food we have ever had.

For fussy eaters, there is no way you would ever go hungry. Something for everyone.

There are dress codes for the restaurants but it is not as strict for the buffet.

There is a swim up bar which is located away from the main pool, but we found this to be a little loud especially with our Canadian and American neighbours, so we found a quieter spot around the main pool. You can also locate yourself down on the beach, which is beautifully maintained and has some beautiful settings for sunrise/sunset.

We are not gamblers so we didnt visit the onsite casino, which we have heard some bad stories about and read grave reviews.

The entertainment team or animation team as they are known are truly lovely and funny people. However the evening shows are a little amateurish. Allot of the evenings entertainment pre and post show is a little boring and I would hope the management team will resolve this. Saying that we still went and watched the majority of them to break up the evening.

There is a discotheque just off site. Be warned All Inclusive is not applucable here and you have to pay for drinks.

The Riu Palace is surrounded by other Riu's who's facillities you can use. However it does not work the other way around as the Riu Palace is much more exclusive. We did witness on a number of occasions guests from other Riu's trying to use the Riu Palaces facillities and they are politely asked to leave the premises.

The staff at the Riu Palace are all very accomodating and lovely people, a credit to the Riu group.

I also found the Thomson site reps, Monica and Andreas to be really good. Any issues let them know and I am sure they will quickly resolve.

People are all different and what one person may like another might not. I'm fussy and I loved the Riu Palace, Bavaro, Macao. To sum up in as little and few words as possible.

Would I go back to the Riu Palace Macao?

'ABSOLUTELY'

We stayed at the RIU Palace Macao for 4 nights (October 13-17). I'd like to first say that the staff were fantastic. All of them were friendly and helpful whenever we encountered them. The entertainment staff are unbelievably energetic. They are busy from morning to late in the night. Our room was kept clean and we were never bothered. If we left the "do not disturb" sign out, the room was left alone. The entire resort is spotless, which we expected. While the pool was a little on the small side, the beach was close by, and the pool was never full. There were plenty of loungers. One of the staff even slide some down so he could put 2 together for us.
Our main disappointment was the food. We only went to the buffet, since the a la cartes require men to wear long pants. (I'll never understand this, since women can wear basically nothing!) The breakfasts were the best meal from the buffet. Who can beat made to order omelets? Of course, there were plenty of other choices...eggs made anyway you desired, pancakes, yogurt, fruit, etc. Lunch was okay. There were hot and cold selections that were at the correct temperature. Although the hamburgers were best if chosen hot off the grill. They weren't so great under the heat lamp. Dinner was the most disappointing. The beef at the carving station was very rare and difficult to cut with the butter knife provided. The main cooked vegetables were carrots and zucchini...every night. The pasta was prepared in advance and would dry out from the heat lamps. The seafood was usually grouper and "fish filet" ( not sure what kind of fish). We had one theme night, which was Mexican. Everything looked the same, and the items were dried out. Desserts were the same every night, and looked better than they tasted.
Like I mentioned, we didn't go to any of the a la carte restaurants. I would like to think that the food would be better, since there shouldn't be as many heat lamps involved. It's a shame that the food was so bad, since the resort is beautiful and the staff are wonderful.

Room Tip: We were in room 3180. We had a garden view facing the rooms to the RIU Bambu. It was quiet and on...
