Reviewed August 27, 2013

Where to start,on arrival fresh juice in glass handed to everyone waiting to check in. This was done efficiently and quickly. lifts to all floors, and luggage brought up shortly afterwards. Welcome pack on arrival. Fridge stocked with plenty of soft drinks, filter coffee maker & kettle. Free gin, vodka, brandy & rum on optic topped when required as were soft drinks. Bedroom and bathroom absolutely first class. Everything to do with food, meals and snacks etc top class. Bars and drinks in plentiful supply. Waiter service around the pool and even on the beach was excellent. All in all I would recommend this hotel for an all inclusive holiday without hesitation. ps no under 18 year olds !

Room Tip: doesn't matter all excellent, but ask for sea view

Apart from a very minor problem with my room safe on arrival, ( - which the Senior Hotel Manager sorted out for me after a lack of response from the reception desk) we had a perfect summer holiday at the Palace Macao. An excellent position for beach walking, without any hassle, the perfect picture card gardens and beach area and surprisingly free from insects, flies and mosquitoes - I never saw any insecticide be sprayed around but the lack of insects around the hotel and grounds was amazing for a hot country like the Dominican. Perhaps the insects all hang out at the hotels next door where the "family" hotels seemed to have plenty of uneaten food lying around there sunbathing and pool areas. I am sure you are aware that the Macao is an adult only hotel and this means that generally the pool and sunbathing areas are kept free from food and spillages. There are always staff on hand for cleaning up spillages, removing "empties" and wiping down tables etc So the hotel is generally always spotless.
The hotel is superbly run, with management always on hand, overviewing their staff and making sure standards are kept to a very high level. Management are approachable with any queries and concerns and always pleased to assist you and acknowledge you.
Not all staff speak good English, but hey I don't speak good 'Spanish' either !! However, I found the majority of staff to generally be very efficient in their work and generally they always have a smile on their face and all will welcome you with the Spanish "hola" (if that's how you spell their "Hi"). For those who complain the staff are "rude", I think it is themselves who have the problem, not the staff - I certainly have no complaints with any of them and I am the type of person who tries to speak with everyone within the complex.
I also had no problems with the food, wine or drinks provided either in the restaurant, bars or coffee shop. I must make a special mention of the "coffee shop", an excellent feature of the 'hotel' with its all day supply of hot drinks of all varieties and 'iced' coffee drinks, cakes, pastries and snacks. The staff in there were excellent and listening to singing "Lucy" or the 'droll' sense of humour of "Joel" was always a feature of my late morning coffee or my late afternoon coffee.
All the staff work long hours in very hot conditions and remain friendly and efficient in their work and that should be taken into account and be appreciated by all guests. The evening bar staff, waiters and waitresses all work extremely hard and efficiently keeping all the guests with full glasses of a vast array of drinks and cocktails......
I also took part in many of the daytime activities run by the animation team who were all extremely friendly, as there job requires. They are fun to be with and yet they don't "pester" you if you do not want to take part.....they soon identify those who have come to get off their sunbeds and those who don't want to.
That's another great point about this hotel, compared to many other hotels I have visited around the world the Macao has good quality sunbeds, with good shaded areas, both near to the pool, away from the pool and all around the palm tree sandy areas leading down to the sea front. There was no rush to put towels out at 6:00am most people came down between 10:00am to 11:00 am to claim their sunbed for the day. You are not crowded in and you can always find a quiet corner under the palm trees if you want piece and quiet......and the waiters will still find you to supply you with a drink !! Particularly if you show a little "gratitude" for their service...but it is never asked for......no staff at any time openly search for tips and they always thank you, if you provide a dollar every couple of days for their "service with a smile".
Not many guests leave the Riu Complex of 5 hotels within its security walls, but I did go outside every evening by running down to the local village and through the village on my 'fitness runs'. I experienced no problems and spoke to a few of the locals as they got used to my 6:30pm visits running up and down there main street in my 'Burnley FC' football shirts !! There were a couple of bars and eating establishments to visit but they were only geared for the local community but I did speak to a couple of male hotel guests who made the short walk out for a local beer.
Overall, this was a great holiday experience and I would fully recommend the Riu Palace Macao to any family, friends or college work colleagues, particularly for those who want the piece and relaxation, that an adults only hotel provides you with.

Very rude staff, mediocre food, but really clean rooms and cool facilities. Activities are dull. Resort's location is fine since there is nothing to see around anyway. Overall, it is a good resort (not excellent)

Loved our vacation. My boyfriend and I stayed a week in July. We wished we had stayed longer. From the moment we arrived until the time we left we were loving the place. Our room was garden view, first floor, a mere two minute walk to the pool and just a few more minutes to the ocean. The pool is lovely, never too crowded and very clean. The beach is fabulous. Very beautiful white sand and blue water that was just the right temperature. We never experienced any issues with seating on the beach or at the pool. Drinks were very good, however the white wine, not so good. I managed to drink it anyway. I do wish that they would upgrade the wine. Food was good to very good, a few offerings were excellent. The specialty restaurants were good, especially the restaurant that sits on the beach. I great enjoyed my dinner that night along with the amazing view. The buffet always offered many choices and many of the choices far exceeded my expectations. Our room was lovely. The air conditioner worked very well and our bed was a so comfortable. Room service, not so great, not much to choose from. The staff was accomodaing at all times. Casino, nothing to get excited about. Very small. All told this resort is a solid four star. Oh, almost forgot to mention the adults only perk, very nice and peaceful. We visited the sister resorts were children are permitted and could not wait to get back to our hotel with its peace and quiet. If you are thinking about booking the Macao, do so, you Wii not be disappointed.

We went for 2 weeks and had a very good time. Overall the hotel was fine, food in the buffet of a good standard but a little repetitive after the first week. Restaurants not always open which meant that you couldn't always get a table and a couple of nights none of them are which makes them busier on the other nights. The food in them is good but limited, two starters and 3 main courses which don't change so if you are there for 2 weeks your choices are limited. Not a 5 star as I have experienced in other countries but enjoyable. To be truly 5 star they need to open all restaurants very day and extend their menus or at least change them every other week to provide 2 week guests with more options.
Room was excellent, a couple of minor problems taken care of very quickly. Very clean and modern as was rest of hotel.
We would class this as a very good 4 star but a little more work required before it can compete with 5 star hotels in other destinations. Adult only a brilliant bonus!

We have returned feeling that we booked a wonderful holiday and everything we were looking for. The atmosphere is relaxing with just enough to occupy you. The staff are constantly there for you. Rooms cleaned regularly, bar service always with a smile, pool and beach service excellent, reception quick to sort anything out if you have a problem, restaurant providing lovely food with lots of choice. However themed restaurants not worth a visit. Be aware of Caribbean Street it is a rip off that sells tat that Del Boy wouldn't make Rodney sell. Also note that the humidity makes your clothes damp and therefore your luggage heavier.
Definitely recommended. The adult only environment made it extra special.

Room Tip: We were on 1st floor which was great.
