This resort was amazing! There is nothing that I would complain about! Love the all inclusive so there are no worries! Loved ating and drinking all day and there is a mini bar,and drinks in the room that are refilled daily!!!!!!!!!! All of the staff are nice, polite, and always willing to help. Many activites around the resort. I had an amazing time and I would love to go back. The view of the pool and ocean is also wonderful. One ofthe best places to stay!

Room Tip: ask for aroom with a view of the ocean and pool!

My boyfriend and I went on our first vacation down south and we choose the Riu Palace Macao! We have a fabulous vacation! Every part of it was extremly enjoyable. From the arrival at the airport, to the bus ride, check in, food, beach, rooms, drinks & entertainment everything was amazing! I highly reccomend this hotel and the location. We went in February 2011 and would go back again for sure! The staff is very helpful, caring and kind. Just be sure to tip, they will always appreciate it!

Having not traveled to the Dominican republic for over 14 years ( after a terrible experience) we were rather nervous about going there again. Booked with Thomson's as an adult only hotel after recent refurbishment and had been assured that there was no building work ongoing. We stayed from 18th to 28th September

On arrival somewhat chaotic after a long flight as we all stood in reception desperate for a drink of somekind whilst we completed a form t receive a key for your room. Got to our room on the 3rd floor over to the left of the hotel and were a little alarmed to see building work closeby (for the adjacent hotel). Our first impression of the room was that is was far better than we expected. Following refurbishment it was obvious that the rooms were all new, clean, spacious and large comfortable bed. The bathroom had a wet room and double sinks and again was clean and very pleasant.

For people considering going to Macao it is part of a complex of Riu hotels with a 'fake' caribbean street linking them and along a long stretch of beach also housing other hotels. However we felt safe the entire time and after walking through the other hotel complexes including the other Riu hotels, we felt glad we were in Macao.

The Macao pool was great with loungers in the pool and new towels supplied each day using a towel card. We were never short of a sunbed and were able to change during the day if we wanted more or less shade. The sun loungers on the beach were not quite to the same standard as the ones around the pool but compared to some of the other hotels along the beach in a considerably better state!.

The beach was decent enough ( not the maldives) as it was quite busy but the sand was white and the sea very clean ( much better than our previous experience in the Dominican). There are two pools, the second being smaller and around a pool bar which was okay.

**WARNING** there is a little song the animacion team do every morning by the pool and as we heard heard it the first time, you just knew you'd be singing it by the end of the holiday! However the animacion team are great, each of them have individual personalities that you will bond with, they will harass you each day for games and sorts, however if you dont wish to participate they will leave you alone and if you wish for a quiet time, you will have to put up with what's going on each day, but it really is non intrusive.

Food..... Well, we had no problems the hotel is clean the food is presented well, our only view, as you do going all inclusive, is there is too much of it! But if you're not a mixer of cuisine on your dinner plate then you'll enjoy it, it's quite good. The restaurants though are hit and miss, it's what you can expect in the buffet but freshly cooked for you, Steakhouse hit and miss, Italian very nice, Japanese..... Awful, however the sushi was good, but you get the same in the buffet but generally you probably wouldn't choose it as it may have been out a while!

Drink- as others have mentioned we questioned whether the spirits were genuine at times as some tasted more genuine than others. You may also need to chase the room maids ( or wait the 8 days we did for someone to ask how your room is) to refill the optics ( that they say are refilled each day) Otherwise the spirits were not bad, the wine and 'champagne' were terrible! But this is not unusual in the Caribbean. There was not an option to buy a nice bottle of wine unless you wanted to spend an extortiionate amount in the one shop on site (not that they had a great selection).

Entertainment- We were expecting the Cococabana (outside amphitheatre) to house the evening entertainment. We were not expecting Broadway but the inside theatre had obviously not been refurbished and although clean, was dingy and when you are on holiday from England who wants to be inside! Each night a different dance based show (from the 3 we saw any part of, maybe we missed the best ones!) The best evenings were in the bar area with the live band ( although we noticed that on certain dates when the majority of guests are changing over the music is more 'lively' and on our last night, the music was quite depressing!

Negative points- The gyms across the 3 Riu hotels were pretty poor, one in Caribbean street, no air con, and equipment you would get tetanus from, another again with no air con and only 1 decent treadmill and the other with 3 but serving over 1200 guests so can be a wait. Lack of any freeweights/weight machines limited. Casino as usual in such resorts a rip off minimum $5 stake but go in with a limited spend and its okay

All in all, we had a lovely time. Went on fishing trip with Hispanic Fishing tours, recommended by Thomson, but personally would not recommend as not a patch on previous fishing trip as. Recommend clubbing together with others to hire a Princess and doing it properly!

The holiday has changed our opinion on the Dom Rep. Its not the Maldives but having holidayed in Barbados and Bahamas, it really isn't bad

PS we booked thinking it was No Children. We were invaded for a few days and there were a few young ones during the whole time but they didnt bother us much and Thomson gave us some reimbursement (without us complaining though others did) at the airport. Thomson need to make this clearer for those going now and anyone going before November should say something to the rep and expect compensation if they booked it as an adult only resort. Other families who missed the rep at the airport did NOT get the cash the rep was giving out.

Stayed at the Macao with friends from 14th Sep to 28th, our first time to the Dom Rep and staying in a RUI hotel. Found the hotel very clean spacious and welcoming, staff very friendly and animation team worked tirelessly. Food good lots of choices. Ate at the Italian and Steak house al a carte a few times but the Crystal was shut when we wanted to go. Beach was lovely, but they could do with replacing some of the sunbeds. Evening entertainment was ok. We booked with Thomsons on the understanding this was an adults only hotel and were there when the influx of families arrived with children from Friday thru till Monday. What mayhem could'nt get in the pool or pool bar for kids leaping in and out and so noisy. We took our selves off to the beach like many others. Our room was quiet and cool with the air conditioning functioning well. Nice touch with the optics in the room and well stocked fridge but we found had enough drinks by the pool and bars. Overall would say a nice hotel and resort but 4* not 5* had a great 2 weeks rest and fun with friends.

Having been here three times previously we thought this would be ideal hotel for our first wedding anniversary.More than a little disappointed. For 3days pool area was like a biuldingsite with powertools and electric cables laided about.Pool bar nice but for two days unable to get near for unruly children. Also walkway to the beach gone along with beachbar.Food good Room nice Staff good and friendly.Management and Thompson Reps rarther offhand. No dress code for dinner. No allocated table for dinner.Overall this hotel seems to have taken a backward step
