My husband and I have traveled extensively thruout the carribean. We have stayed in some "shacks" and some beautiful places. This time we arrived at 1230am with our boys 13 and 11 and daughter 8 They man at the desk was ready for us and within moments we were in our room. Receive 1 key and can get extras for $10.00 deposit. You receive 1 towel card for a room for pool/beach towels. Not sure how you are supposed to get more towel cards but we got extras when we turned in our towel.

PROS - the beach is beautiful with shady palm trees or wide open areas depending on what you like, all offering unobstructed ocean views. No problem ever getting a great spot. Futbol goals - 2 on the beach and one over by the children's area. The grounds were always meticulous. Very short and easy and beautiful walk to the beach.

ROOM - we stayed in a family room in block 0600. Room was clean, beds were typical...2 queen beds pushed together and a couch that made into a regular size bed. Bathroom was clean and everything worked, except clock radio was plugged into an outlet that was connected to a switch by the door and housekeeper always turned off switches. Room safe large and easy to use. Refrigerator stocked every 2 days. Towels not a problem.

CONS - smoking. we do not smoke and I hated how some were smoking poolside or on the terrace at the restaurant. Some employees were friendly but others were not. If I had one recommendation for management it would be to train staff on customer service.

FOOD - typical buffet food. Could always get some pizza and fries during the day without a wait. MamaJuana had help yourself to drinks including wine and beer. Good assortment in the am and always had staples in pm but would have a few new entries as well.

DRINKS - ok. Wish they had a special drink of the day. Sometimes you ordered drinks and you never knew what you would be getting.....made it an adventure. Second tip for management better training for bar staff
BEACH - you can walk for a long time in either direction. Head one way and you can go to local shops. Prices start out higher than the gift shops on Carribean street or over by the Hotel Palace but if you like to barter you can get the prices down lower. Beach was always clean and water clear. Minimal fish life and no snorkeling off the resort

Excursions - the only one we did this time was Xtreme Buggy half-day and had a blast! Made reservations directly before arriving in Punta Cana

Other vacationers - hotel tends to attract many spanish speaking people and europeans.
Time of trip July 20 thru 27 2013

ENTERTAINMENT - evening shows were typical but fun. One was a little raucous for my kids.

Room Tip: we did not request anything special but our room in 600 block was clean and comfortable

We went to this hotel as it was advertised as a 5 star, right from the minute we arrived we were dealing with issues about are room bookings as well as other people were too just to have the hotel reps claiming they did not understand us we were persistent with are request for our room and after some time when they understood we were no going to except thier room they then understood us and said we are upgrading you to a king bed and stood there as they were expecting some kind of tip for the room which was a king bed when we booked it with our travel agent. The service was poor for the most part with the staff seeming disinterested and unmotivated to the point where at supper people were clearing tables of dirty dishes just so the could have a place to sit. rooms are small with the bath room vanity being only 3' from the edge of your bed and the shower was only partly closed to your bed room as the wall did not go all the way up to the ceiling so now as you took a shower your bed room became hot, we did not see any cockroaches in our rom but other couples we talked to did and were trying to get another room. Drinks were of limited selection and if your drink you asked for was not on the list handed to you at the bar then you were not going to get it and the bar tender did not have any interest in trying to make it, the food average with a limited selection in variety and it seemed that the lunch menu was very close to the supper menu and the a la carte dinners were just as blah as the buffett.I could go on and on as I have been to Punta Canna 3 times now and know what to expect and talking to other people from Canada, united states and England all spoke of great dissatisfaction and were going to call their travel agents when they got home as well so am I

We were visiting the Bambu for the second time, as we were there 5 years earlier. We found it to have gone down hill a bit from our last visit. We had to ware wrist bands this time. There were lot of small touches missing now too. Eg.. popcorn machine, no english news papers, no pool drinks service and pool towels a bit old and stained. We could only drink in our hotel now where as before we were allowed in all 5 hotels in the complex. We also had a large influx of baseball kids teams who over ran the hotel causing havoc, turning on fire hydrants and running around the sports bar taking anything that wasn't screwed down. The beach is still very nice and the staff were always friendly especially the entertainment staff who were always in good spirits and full of energy.

When we arrived to the hotel we were greeted with a glass of cocktail and taken to the room. The room was clean and big, with all the facilities available such as free mini bar (filled up every two days), ironing board, hair dryer. The bathroom wasn't too big though so it used to get really hot while taking a shower. I requested a see view and got a room with a balcony with the sea view (it was on the ground floor so you couldn't see much) but as it was the bungalow I can't complain as I know I got the best see view available with no extra charge!! The beach was amazing, the pools were nice but a little bit crowded, as I'm not really a "pool person" and like to relax on the beach I was spending my time on the beach anyway. I've seen reviews that the pools were too busy and full of kids, but come on this is a family friendly hotel and if you don't like it there is a beach available as well. I'm a single person and I didn't mind it at all, plus you can always choose Riu Macao which is for guests over 18 only. The food was delicious, didn't have problem with booking the restauranst at all, you can book 3 days in advance and the bookings are taken from 7 am but you don't have to necessary wake up so early as they sit there till about 10 am and I was waking up before 7 am anyway and enjoying each minute of such beautiful weather. The trips from the hotel are quite expensive but they are amazing and worth every penny! Our rep Amos was extremely nice and very helpful, was with us since the beginning till the last moments at the airport, The only minus I would say were the drinks, cocktails were to sweet and beer really week, all of them served in small plastic glasses, I would recommend taking your own cap as they can be made in them if requested (in the pool area, in the evening you get normal glasses). The entertainment in the hotel was lovely, however there are not many clubs available so we had to go to Imagine Club which is lovely but very expensive and quite far away (65 dollars for a week entry and open bar for one night, including the transport). Apart from that everything was great and the staff were really nice and friendly.

Having booked this hotel quite late on, a smooth transfer from the small, sweltering Punta Cana airport and we arrived at the Riu Bambu. Being one of five Riu hotels in the complex, we noticed that although not quite as impressive looking at the Macao and Palace, it was a large, presentable hotel.

The reception area was rammed full of people as this is where excursion retailers sit and the numerous holiday reps, along with many people sitting waiting for the restaurant to open. We were queued up and handed an envelope with beach towel vouchers, a room key and some information along with a cold fruit juice.

The rooms are all set in blocked apartments, with our room being 2611, it was not too far from the main centre. The room itself is spacious and very clean, with modern furnishings and an impressive air con which is a relief from the humid heat in the Dominican. Even more impressive was the fact there is a free mini bar within the room, including whisky, gin, brandy and vodka along with mixers in the fridge of 7-Up, Pepsi, tonic water and two cans of the local beer, with this being refilled every two days! The maids do a sterling job of tidying the rooms daily although the doors are left open when they do this, resulting in numerous mosquitos lodging in your room,

The complex itself has numerous bars, with the sports bar normally ice cold, showing different sports on TV from around the world, with pool table and arcade games that are massively overpriced, numerous computers for internet use, massively overpriced, and a fridge of food that you can microwave yourself. The main bars have plenty of staff that are friendly and helpful, serving a wide variety of alcoholic drinks and cocktails. If you are willing to tip the staff it is very rare that you have to wait any length of time to be served. There are coffee machines and soft drink machines for self service dotted around.

The main restaurant has plenty of seating, although the dress code is not enforced and it is common for people in swimwear to wonder past you, and it can sometimes descend into a feeding frenzy with the idea of queuing and manners nowhere in sight. This is a shame as there is a huge selection of food which changes on a daily basis, all sorts of meat, vegetables, fruits, pastries, pizzas, pastas, desserts etc, which is the same for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is of a decent quality and the staff top your glass up with water regularly or if you are willing to tip, wine and beer. The a la carte restaurants (Italian / Mexican / Steak / Asian) can be booked early in the morning for three days in advance. The Italian has a very good standard of food, the Mexican is awful, the Steakhouse is also worth visiting and the Asian again is awful.

Finally, the complex itself. Be wary of the weekends, as a couple of hundred local people turn up to stay and overrun the hotel. The pools are always rammed, with the swim-up bar being full of people getting drunk prior to the provocative dance shows by the side of the pool, with women grinding around in front of children. We did not even bother going into the pool for the duration due to this. The hotel is right on top of the beach, which is clean and beautiful, although you do get offered things for sale continuously. There are plenty of loungers both in the hotel and on the beach. Inside the hotel you will be pestered by people walking in off the beach and offering the usual junk for sale, along with water sports, massage etc, which I am surprised the hotel allow. The entertainment team are full of energy, however it is more catered for the Spanish speaking guest as even with the repetitive evening shows, I barely understood what was happening most of the time as no English was being spoken.

In summary, I would not classify this a First Choice Premium as it was sold to us, it is a good 3 to 4 star hotel, with good food and decent rooms, although let down by the pure volume of people the hotel cram in, the pool effectively being a club 18-30 zone and not a lot to do in the evenings. Add to this there being a limited amount of things to do in the local area, it is not somewhere I would return to.
