This resort was very nice, the rooms clean and the staff friendly. The down side was that many on the staff didnt speak english so sometimes it was a challenge to communicate. Drinks were watered down and often had ask for alcohol to be put in drinks. Prenty to do to keep busy on the resort and enjoyed the entertainment crew.

Stayed there for one week at beginning of April with my sister and her husband. Nice open concept lobby area. Rooms were very nice and clean stayed in 2100 building close to main building. Did not hear any noise at all. Free bar with 4 different liquors and water and pop in room. Buffet was fairly good, had lots of choice to pick from. Only complaint was the chicken and beef one night were really over cooked and dried out. Breakfast, lunch and dinners had lots of choices. Good fresh fruits, really enjoyed the mango and cantaloupe and good variety of desserts. Could not get to make any reservation for the a la carte restaurants very long line ups, was there at 7:30am.

Great beach, the water was nice and warm, very good pool areas but hard to get a couple of chairs together in the shade around pool area. Pool water was also nice and warm. Lots of
activities to do in the day time or to watch. Drink mixes for most of the drinks are just way to sweet, they end up not tasting at all what you are use to. The beer was good.

The staff was very nice and helpful when we had any questions. Free internet service in the lobby every day for 90 minutes, used it a couple of times to send emails. Almost every one of the staff we talked to spoke English very well.

Took an excursion to see how the coffee and cocoa beans are grown and had a fresh taste of each, got to stop at a school and give some school supplies and see how the people really live.
If you are going here please bring some school supplies for the children as they do not have much. You will see the smiles on the children's faces and it will make you truly happy. One of the fellows that runs this excursion is a school teacher and journalist, from the money they make on this excursion they are building schools for these children.

They had shows every night but it would have been nice if there was a band or some other room to go to listen to some Spanish or any kind of music for variety. They had a dancing spot where you could dance with the staff and learn how to dance, we just watched and were amazed at how good these dancers are.

All in all a good holiday.

Room Tip: 2100 building close to main part but did no hear any noise at all. Nice main floor balcony.

My girlfriend and I had a 2 week Easter break here March/April 2013. We chose Riu because we'd stayed in a Riu resort in Cancún, Mexico last year and loved it.
Although the resort is not at the same level as the one in Cancún, it still had all the Riu features we've come to expect.

The hotel has a main building with reception, lobby and restaurants etc. Behind, and to the side of this is the accommodation, which consists of blocks of 4 or 6 bedroom 2 storey apartments. These are laid out on a grid pattern, so you're never too far a walk from the beach/restaurants etc.

The rooms are your basic - 2 large single beds pushed together, en suite, balcony, mini bar etc. These are cleaned each morning by the maid.

There's a buffet restaurant which has a big selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With a different roast being offered each night for dinner. Seating can fill up quickly during busy times, so often they'll encourage you to sit in the outside part. Best advice is to watch out for rude guests who will walk through you without even realising. You kinda get used to it though.

The hotel is right on the beach, so you can walk onto the beach and plant yourself down on one of the deckchairs, or even on the sand and enjoy the views, or else if you're up at breakfast time you can grab a sunlounger beside one of the many pools. The pools nearest the main building can get loud with the 'entertainment', which consists of the club entertainers playing loud music and attempting to get the guests to do water areobics etc.

There's a buffet restaurant between this and the quieter pool. This is more or less open from breakfast time to early evening, when it closes to become the steak restaurant and mexican.

The restaurants that you can book are all very good and tasty. I had an awesome 6oz rib eye steak. Cooked perfectly.

Staff are mostly friendly, although you will have to tip a few dollars now and again to get noticable service.

Advice for UK travellers, bring dollars. No matter what other guides tell you etc, bring US dollars. Everything you see during your stay is priced in this. No point using a random third currency.

Also if flying with Thomson, look after Sonny & Amos, as they are very good and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room. That way you don't have people looking in your window as they walk pas...

My fiancé and I booked the 5 apple square deal and this is the resort we ended up with. We thought the grounds were very well kept and everything was very clean. We had a nice big room and the maid staff did a good job keeping up with it every day that we requested them to. Overall this is a descent resort, but it is not a 5 apple resort. The buffet had very few things that were good; however, the steak house and the Italian restaurant were very good. The breakfast was ok with the exception of the omelets, they were great. Standing in line in the morning was a hassle to get reservations to one of the restaurants. There were very few staff members that spoke English and a few that spoke one or two words in English, however, for the most part they were very friendly. We felt like some of the staff expected a tip every time we got a drink, but most of them were nice. This is a very large property with a lot of rooms and when we were there it was booked and crowded.
The beach was breathtaking and the weather while we were there was perfect! They have water sport equipment for free, but try to charge you $29.00 for a lesson for a couple of them. We did an excursion with the hotel and one through the Apple representative, the one through apple was $200.00 for the two of us and the one through the hotel was $80.00, the Apple one was nicer, but basically the same thing.
Do not let the 24hr service fool you, the only thing opened 24hrs is the sports bar and the food in there is awful.
We honestly could have cared less on a lot of this stuff because we were going to have a great time regardless, but I would not recommend this resort to anyone wanting to have a little luxury on vacation. If you want the basics and a clean place to hang out at, this is it. If you want the little details that make a big difference, I would try a different resort. Hope this helps!!!

My friend and I traveled back to the Bambu for my 5th holiday there from March 17 - March 31, 2013. Gotta say, each and every time, it gets better and better!
I am not going to repeat myself from the other posts that I have written, but I will reiterate that this hotel is the best because of the workers. It is clean. It is wonderfully located a short distance from the airport. Their beach is spectacular!!!! The rooms are clean and the food is decent!!!
There have been a few positive additions since we were last there in October. The new pool over by the kids splash area is fabulous for quiet time, if you choose. The Mexican Restaurant is very good. The Steak House (which was there before) is fabulous, and is the Italian (also there before). We have noticed that the Mamajuana is set up for breckie and they have changed the layout of the breakfast in the Colonial. It runs much smoother now as everyone isn't crowded in the same spot.
As I stated earlier, the staff is truly amazing here!!! They will go above and beyond getting you what you need/want and are always helpful, personable, friendly and funny. Some of these people have become our friends, our family from us traveling there so many times.
Can't beat the value for the price and the location on this one! Can't wait to go back in 125 days................and yes, I AM counting!!!

We just got back on Sunday from this resort. It was amazing. I had read the reviews of others and was kind of skepticle. I went in with no expectations, but wow, was I blown away. We were in a deluxe room and they were kept clean, and fridge was stocked every day or every second. Depends on if we drank it all. You were given three 1,5 litres of water a day. The rooms were kept very clean, no bugs, always toilet paper, even gave extra. Bring your own face cloths, cause they do not have them. Also bring your own shampoo and conditioners, they do not provide them at the hotel. Clean shower towels replaced every day. We didn`t have any of the problems that have read in the other reviews. All of the staff were wonderful and couldn't do enough for you. The pool area was clean, as were the grounds of the resort. The pools were clean, as for people saying they were dirty. There was sand on the bottom, not a lot but hey you are walking in it all the time. The beaches are very close and beautiful. The foo was amazing. I only ate at the buffet, we didn't want to be on a schedule. They had lots to choose from every night. All the food is labeled so you know what you are eating. I stuck to food I knew i could eat. I have severe IBS. I never got sick from anything I ate. Lots of greens and fruit. The fruit tastes better than what we have here in Nova Scotia. Everything was very fresh. We had the time of our life, the entertainment was very good, the entertainers worked very hard all day and then again until 11pm. No one can say they don't work for every penny at this resortm because they do. I left money for tips instead of items. 2-3 for the maid and water boy and usually 1 -2 for every few drnks at the bar. The average wage per month is 250US a month. Extra is a bonus. If you are going to book excersions, do it through your rep. they gaurentee safety, and the food or drink you recieve during your trip also. So you won't get sick. You may pay extra, but it's worth every penny. We went on the Country express tour with Danny Boy. Amazing tour guide, and after going to a real DR home and farm we went horseback riding had lunch than went to the most amazing beach I have ever seen. We also went snorkelling on the happy hour tour. Our trip to the RIU Bambu was amazing and I can't wait to go back again. Oh and just a warning, go easy on the Mamajuana. ;)

My husband and I just got back from a 3 night stay at the RIU Bambu. The hotel was very clean and the food was pretty good. We did not do any of the specialty restaurants just the coloniol buffet and mama juana buffet. Our room was in the newly renovated section at the back of the resort. It was very quite and private back there. Things that I did not care for were the rum in our mini bar was empty on arrival and empty when we left. We called the front desk 3 times and still never replaced. Take wash wrags with you because I never saw one during our stay. The swimming pools are on the small side. The beach was beautiful and the drinks were awesome!! Like I said before nice quick getaway from the cold weather.
