“Beautiful Beach....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2013

We the just returned from the Riu Bambu....we up graded to the deluxe rooms ,we were in room 4202...a beautiful room with a king size bed, flat screen tv and a large walk in shower....lots of hot water...we have been to the DR many times and we were not disappointed with the weather or the beach. The hotel is starting to show its age a little but the staff was very helpful and friendly. The nightly shows are a little sad but the entertainment staff work 12 hour shifts and do their best to keep you entertained. The buffets are big and noisy, but if you look around there is always something to eat...we ate at the steak house and it was wondeful, other people we talked to said the mexican was great too. One week is long enough for me but my husband could have stayed longer. All in all the hotel and beach were great and there was no snow to shovel...would we return, yes but there are other places to explore so we will move on to explore other places..

Room Tip: we were in room 4202,quiet clean new

We stayed at Riu Bambu for one week. On a positive note, the grounds and beach are beautiful. That is about the only nice thing that I can say.

The food at the resort is lousy. Most of the restaurants are buffets. The meat is very tough and they do not have steak knives. It is hard to cut through a piece of meat with a table knife. The buffets do not have much variety from day to day. They also run out of certain foods by the end of the week. On Thursday they ran out of breakfast sausage and cut up hotdogs instead. You have to get your own coffee from a machine. The only table service you get (with the exception of the specialty restaurants) is the server removing your plate. I thought that the food was ok at the steak house and Italian specialty restaurants. Speaking of specialty restaurants, if you want a reservation you have to get up at 7:00AM and go to the lobby to sign up. This in my opinion is absolutely ridiculous. I stayed at a different resort last year and was able to make all of my dinner reservations shortly after check-in.

We did not stay in a renovated room. The room is dark and outdated. The bed is very hard. The air conditioner stopped working on Wednesday and had to be repaired. There is a mini fridge in the room. They stock it every second day. I think that is crazy. There is a master power switch on the wall. It is not marked. You have to keep it on or nothing will have power. Bring your own shampoo and body wash. They give you tiny packages to use.

If you are looking for a true five star resort then don't stay here. I would give this place a three. If you don't care about food or run down rooms then you will be perfectly happy here.

A group of 19 of us travelled to the Dominican Republic and stayed at the Riu Bambu from Feb.3 to the 10th 2013. This was a very nice hotel. Rooms were clean and had very large beds. Staff were friendly and very helpful. (We had a problem one day with the toilet and it was fixed within the hour). The beaches were beautiful. The water was clear and clean and warm. Staff were great at getting people involved in the activities such as beach volleyball, games, dancing etc in the beach area.
There are 4 speciality restaurants on site as well as a buffet. The buffet was about the same every day with a very large selection of foods to choose from. As for the speciality restaurants,we all loved the Mexican, Chinese, and Italian restaurants. The steak house was disappointing to say the least. There are quite a few bars one the premisis which makes gettin fluid replacement easy.
The resort could use a washroom closer to the beach as the closest is in one of the restaurants.
There were quite a few people selling their wears on the beach which was bothersome and very irritating.
The one major problem we had with this resort was the smoking. As non smokers, going to the sports bar to watch a game (the superbowl) as well as sitting watching the evening shows was almost unbareable due to the amount of second hand smoke we were inhaling.

Room Tip: There are a few good day excursions available. Saona island is one of them.

Wonderful hotel and brilliant staff, food was great, one of my favourite places to go. The whole set up was great from morning to night, sports bar was the coolest place in the hotel, will be back .it is right on the beautiful white sandy beach. The choice of food was good with plenty of places to eat. Animation team are first class, they work their socks off

The hotel was great right on the beach so step out of your and through the grounds onto the soft sand. There were beds a plenty even when the hotel was full. There is two pools which have trees around them so plenty of shade.
The entertainment staff were always buzzing about trying to get you taking part in the activies but a polite no and they left. They also did bingo at 5pm for us Brits.
The evening shows were ok and watchable. Best place for drink the sports bar so cool to escape the heat.

The food was plentiful and good.

The rooms were large if not a little dated.

But overall a good hotel and great time.

This is the first review I've ever written on here. I felt I needed to comment.
We had been to the Dominican twice before. We knew what to expect, to some degree. We had read the reviews and felt we were making a solid decision. We understand people can be picky with food but we really weren't so any reviews around food weren't too concerning to us.

First impression - upon arrival, the staff seemed unorganized. Translation barrier was difficult, which should NOT be the case when dealing with hotel staff.
Our suite was VERY far from the resort. We later discovered that the price for having a nicer room meant being in a further location. We thought "We can deal with the trek" and after discovering a pool closer to our room, we made the best of it.
We were in a deluxe suite. The bed, we had heard, might be hard but at first we thought it ok. By the end of the trip, it was quite painful. It was definitely one of the hardest beds I had ever slept on. If you have back issues, I definitely don't recommend these rooms.
The noise - constantly disruptive. I understand people are up all the time but the shouting in the halls, the banging of doors, and if you were under another floor, the noise above you was constant.

The food seemed typical. We were cautious of what we ate but disappointed at the selection. It just got worse. The food started to take on generic names like 'Beef Meat' and it resembled some grey, uncooked, sloppy mass. We suspect it was this that might have given us our food poisoning towards the end of our trip.
Bacon - we saw it only once and it was terribly undercooked. The pieces that weren't undercooked, or rather 'cooked', were burnt beyond recognition.
Dinner times at the buffet were chaotic and not enjoyable.

Staff - there needs to be people who are actually SKILLED in customer service AND can speak/understand English. I understand that languages will always be a barrier when you travel but I don't believe that should be the case with hotel staff. When you need to discuss simple, common questions like needing more water, or more toilet paper, or wanting to change your room, you would think they should be able to understand you. The staff here, for the most part, did not.

Entertainment staff - fairly typical of what we've seen at other resorts. Mostly annoying in the sense that they flirted relentlessly. It's not so much that the flirting was annoying but more their persistence! It's aggressive and not, in the least, enjoyable. When you say 'no' and want to be left alone, they should do so. Harassment should not be experienced, no matter who you are, or how old you are.

Overall the grounds were quite nice. I would not recommend it, even for those who feel they can tolerate the 'bad' when traveling to Dominican simply because of the food. It was my birthday while on the trip and I did not enjoy experiencing the illness like we did.
