This was our 3rd outing to the Dominican Republic and as usual met all of the usual expectations: Great food, friendly GO's, excellent amenities and activities—and the rooms were just right. You can opt for the 5-Trident adult bungalows, which include updated interiors and space, private bar and infinity pool, but then it does run somewhat counter to the culture Club Med has built over the last "45-plus" years. It most likely comes down to the marketing mavens, who are always seeking new ways to improve the bottom line (Club Med was recently bought out).
Many of the islands in the Caribbean suffered incredible damage, including the DR, however the wind and storm surge appeared minimal compared to the total devastation incurred on islands like Dominica, Barbuda and St. Maarten. Most of the palms on the beach appeared more like telephone poles and offered little shade from the sun during 35˚+ days. The grounds crews were hard at work cutting, trimming and improving the gardens, as well as the beaches. I was amazed by one of the groundskeepers, who scampered up each palm using nothing more than a simple rope-rig and a bucketful of courage. He would hack and chop away the dead palm branches with a razor sharp machete, however he had a great aversion to being photographed. As I attempted to get a better shot he kept yelling: "No photo. No photo."
I said, "You don't think you're handsome enough my friend?"
His reply was an extended hand overtly rubbing his thumb and fingers together.
I said, "You're not that handsome, but I can say you're handy."
His compatriots laughed, which only annoyed him more so and thought better of sticking around for another shot.
Overall the weather was good—a little rain in October is to be expected, including hurricanes. If you can tip a little for extra service, please do so. Here are a few highlights
worth mentioning: If you want a gentlemen's cut and straight-razor shave—ask for Ignacio. If you want a special dish, go to the Indigo Restaurant for lunch and have the "Fish-of-the-Day." (More like fish that was just on the line—in the pan—and on my plate—30 minutes flat!) Take the "Sunset Cruise." (We were a party of ten and had the boat to ourselves). The crew was outgoing and accommodating.
Special shout out to GO Germaine, tennis pro, who kindly spent dinner with us and shared a few personal stories about his home country of Haiti. Also, it's always a pleasure to meet the Village Chief, GO Aziz Air Itto, as well as his protégé GO Boris, who seemed to have a lot of fun as emcee at the nightly show. Do not miss the outdoor Cirque du Soleil Show unless weather spoils the performance.
If you can speak French or Spanish or just try to it's a good thing. Funny how people will try to converse if you give a little extra effort to learn something new.
And best of all, it's a wonderful surprise to meet fellow GMs from other Club Med properties like Alaine and Dominique from Marrakech. Au revoir mes amis!
