“everything you need to be relaxed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 16, 2012

There are many things to be said about this complex resort.

First of all the location is great.
The beach is awesome and there are many details , discrete ones, made to make your life easier from showers, trash bins to the beach bar, chaisselongues and activities.

But come back to the reception desk :)
rapid, efficient. 10 $ were offered based on previous recommendations , but I don't feel it was necessary and for sure not mandatory.
Do not forget to ask for discount coupons when checking-in.

Room.

The basic one is.. not basic at all.
Spacious and with everything you need inside. Air condition perfect, some drinks , excellent bad.
Just upgrading the TV program offers , but not needed too much in such vacation :)

The bathroom.
Here I saw some debates and some clarifications are welcomed.
The "bath" has 2 parts: one with 2 sinks and big mirrors. you can find nice amenities (poor promoted even on hotel web-site) as you can find here various "kits" for tooth, vanity, razors and many others. So , no complaints.

The second room of the "bath" is the toilet and the bathtube.
Overall , not so bad, but , yes, it's just refurbished and not modern. 3 types of soap/shampoo are available , towel , bath robe and slippers. personal experience depends on the expectations.

Meal

Amazing for those loving sea food (including fish). Beef, pork or chicken also available.

Exotic fruits and many others also availble.
There are 4 buffet restaurant (2 in Beach, 2 in Palace). First 2 are not so crowded.
La brisa is excellent as view , but smaller in space (lower offer)

As choosing Beach instead of Palace I had the right to use only 4 a la carte, but I should admit that my experience was great at La Brisa where I had the feeling of personal service. The rest are a bit to crowded and the feeling is not different from buffet restaurants.

Animation.
Nice times in both places (Beach/Palace). I think both teams need a bit of more halp from management and the support tools are missing and they are using more their personal skills than other "devices"
Miguel is a great guy.

Bar.

If you don't want alcohol you need to specify otherwise most of the drinks are "con ron" :)

Overall experience is a positive even I had some issues , but rapidly solved but guest service. Internet is expensive and used as urgency only. Shops from inside are a bit expensive compare with the market behind the resort

Room Tip: Room near to the pool if you want to see some people and hear some noise (decent one). If not , ask...

As with any trip away my wife did extensive research that would make our holiday one to remember. We decided that we wanted to vary from some of our favorite holiday caribean locations. As we are always scepticle about other persons reviews on the web, we felt that there was enough about this hotel to give it a whirl. I am pleased to say that we had an awesome time. The resort was gorgeous, staff attentive and the beach front property one to come to again and again. The Barcelo Bavaro Beach made our 20th celebration of marriage one for the record books and we encourage those looking for a excellent time away to give them a try. The worst you can do is get sunburn lol!!

Room Tip: Bring your sunscreen as it is a must!!

The hotel itself was very nice, food was good to very good and the beach was great. The only issue was the service, it was either very good or very bad. Every day our maid would make up the room, but forget to replace the towels so we’d have to track down a maid and ask for towels. The beach bar was ideally located and well set up, but the bartenders were slow, sometimes rude and never smiled. It was faster to walk by that bar and use the one near the reception.

Our biggest issue was with Sunwing, and I caution everyone thinking of using them to reconsider. Our flight was scheduled to leave Punta Cana at 4:30, so we arrived around 1:30. Just before getting off the shuttle bus we were advised that the flight had been delayed and may not show up until the next morning. However, we were asked to leave the bus and assured Sunwing would make arrangements for us to go back to a resort for the delay. That was either a lie or unwarranted optimism. When we got off the bus we were met by a Sunwing rep who told us he was trying to reach a supervisor who could authorize hiring a bus to take us back to a resort. More unwarranted optimism? Then we were told the flight had left Canada and was on the way to pick us up. That appears to have been an outright lie. As the Sunwing reps seemed to have developed wings, we had to search for them to find out what was going on. They all had cell phones glued to their ears and assured us they were in contact with the Sunwing office in Punta Cana. We found out later this was totally untrue. Then we were told the plane was coming soon, so we should check our baggage and head into the waiting area. This turned out to be the biggest sham of all. By checking our baggage and heading through security we effectively stranded ourselves in the airport. When we go into the departure area we were told a different story by every Sunwing rep we could track down. The plane was on its way, the plane was leaving shortly, the plane will not be arriving until tomorrow morning, etc. Untrue story after untrue story. The young lady who seemed to be the official spokesperson told us one whopper after another and seemed perfectly at home doing it. Experience is a great teacher. The first picture shows that the flight was scheduled to arrive on time, despite the fact it hadn’t even left Canada yet, meaning it was going to be at least 2 hours late.
When the flight didn’t arrive at the “rescheduled time”, Sunwing offered passengers a 15 dollar meal voucher, to be used at one of two fast food franchises. Sadly, they also made it almost impossible to get a voucher. While there seemed to be no shortage of staff, only one person was actually working to give out the vouchers, while 3 – 5 others stood by and asked questions. It took several minutes for each voucher. Consider the number of passengers on the flight and you’ll have an idea of how long it would have taken people to get a voucher if they had actually waited in line. We’re talking hours. The second picture is of the “gang” of Sunwing employees. It’s nice to have so much supervision don’t you think? The young lady in the middle is the one referred to above.
The flight eventually arrived, but I suspect that it was only because we protested as much as we did. Otherwise we would have been guests of the Punta Cana airport all night. No explanation was ever given, but a Sunwing rep told me that Sunwing isn’t the most financially stable company, as numerous articles on the Internet suggest. Sometimes they don’t have enough crews to pick up passengers, even if they are expecting a flight home. Because of their financial situation, they have to wait for a crew to finish their regular route, get the required amount of rest, and then send them to pick up the waiting passengers. Sometimes that may be the next day. Sunwing makes passengers wait in the airport because they can’t afford to pay for an extra day in the resort for all passengers waiting for flights. While an extra day sounds like fun, consider what would happen if the company goes under, which to me appears very likely considering my experience. Punta Cana is a tourist destination, so if a flight was cancelled it would be almost impossible to arrange for an alternate flight. The only planes coming and going are full, no place for 2 or 3 hundred extra passengers. My suggestion is to avoid Sunwing.

We were there the 1st week in April, and we're blown away with the resort. Our vacation was restful, with no problems. You could always find seating all along the beach at any time of day. None of the buffet we ever crowded, and there were times when there were only a handful of people there. All the staff were very attentive. WARNING: the excursion to the island is one long sales trip, you'll be luck if you come back with any money in your pocket. Also don't expect to do much (any) snorkeling on that excursion. Would definitely go again to this resort.

Barceló Bavaro Beach April 27 to May 4, 2012

Pros: the Resort is clean, the grounds are well manicured , the beach is cleaned twice daily, plenty of beach chairs in the shade are available , no hassle to get one. The BEACH is awesome situated in a long bay / cove with beautiful turquoise water . The beach has plenty of Palm trees. The buffet restaurants "Caribe" & "La Brisa" are located close to the beach with a terrific view and an ocean breeze. Awesome. Our Room Attendant Ms. Elisabeth Rijo was terrific, always very attentive, she made up our room early, and it was cleaned properly. - see her picture -. Advise... tip your Maid daily so you get good Service, and your room will not be made up by 5:00 PM. Our Waitress Ms. Maira E.... was efficient and took care of our needs. Ms. Yeimy Lopez , Hostess at Caribe for Breakfast & Lunch had a nice welcome smile for us - see picture -.
We always had our meals at Caribe or La Brisa, since we like to pick and choose our food... the Resort offers 5 á la Carte Restaurants with a surcharge between $15.00 / $25.00 per person. They also have 2 Restaurants " Santa Fee" & Chez Gourmet" where there is no surcharge.

We would rate the food in Caribe and La Brisa " average" , the selection is limited, you will not leave hungry I guarantee you that, but when you stay 7 nights and see day in , day out the same food items it gets pretty boring, no creativity, no pizzazz. Again, at " Majestic" the selection is much larger ( huge ) and the quality is so much better too. They are really penny pinching at Barceló. One night after having Dinner at Caribe we went over to La Bisa to check the variety of food items displayed there, would you believe there are even less food items to choose from and for this experience you pay $ 270.00 per day.

If you want a good local Massage, next to the Resort is a small local shopping Center , there is a HUT painted in a light blue, ask for Susan ( the boss ) or Christina , you will receive a one hour full body massage for $40.00, and they have a special too, ask for it. The Massage is done very professional and relaxing.

Cons: the House wine served " Vino Tinto" from Chile tastes like Grape Fruit Juice, the House Wine at " the Majestic Colonial " is so much better, it has body . We felt the staff at the Guest Service area were less enthusiastic vs. their counterpart at Majestic Colonial where you could feel the passion to please. At Barceló the guest service employees just were doing their job. We were in room 1063 , in building one , the stage of * Teatro Beach * is directly across from this room and each night for 7 nights we were kept awake from 9:45 PM till 11:10 PM because of the very loud music. This was never mentioned by the reception staff upon check in. We went to guest services spoke with an employee ( I have the name ) about this problem, he called someone spoke in Spanish but he had a big laugh on his face . He offered to move us, but we did not want to re pack and waste our valuable vacation time in moving around and packing up again. We decided to stay in room 1063 and took the nightly punishment. We were told ,staying in building # 3 is the most quiet one . We also feel, that the guest service staff at the Majestic is much more fluent in ENGLISH, and more customer oriented. This is NOT Elisabeth Rijo fault, but " Hand-towels arrived each day after 4:00 PM, this also happened at Majestic Colonial. Theses Resorts must be using a Commercial Laundry and they are just overwhelmed by the daily workload. Since I love to listen to "Live Music " I inquired at the Reception what the Resort has to offer. I was told we have a Piano Player at " Mamey Bar " , well to my amazement the piano player was a ghost, since " Liberace " passed on in February 1987. What a cover up. Here again " Majestic" has a much better LIVE Music program , beginning at 7:00 PM you can listen to a terrific saxophone , trumpet , piano player and drummer, playing popular tunes. The audience was thrilled about this music.

Our Ground Tour Agent " VIP Travel Service " told us no need to exchange US Dollars into the local currency, the folks on the Island still love the US Dollar.

If you can live with these shortcomings, then you will enjoy your vacation. PS: be sure to read my report on the * Majestic Colonial * as a comparison.

DO NOT pack anything of value in your checked in Luggage, they opened ours at the Punta Cana airport and stole anything of value after we checked it in.. (perfume, computer case, shaving case ) about $300.00
This is not a new hotel, it was refurbished. The floors are 20 years old, the bath rooms are the same. The walls are paper-thin. Hope people next to you go to bed at the same time. You can here people talking.
The restaurants are great and the food is very good. Use all the a-al-carte. The beach is one of the best and security is very good. If you like poverty and depression, then venture of the resort. Locals who are friendly and are your friends will turn VERY fast once you tell them you have no money.
Between both hotels you will have a good time, and good value for the money.
We are in our 60's and the no kids was a great idea. The main hotel had children running under feet until 2 AM.

Room Tip: top floor are best, sleep early, because it gets noisy at 9 am.
