“Busy but very good”
Reviewed February 24, 2014 via mobile

Stayed at Ambar 5th-19th Feb and had a very enjoyable 2 week holiday.
Room- Although a little dark, which is a theme in the Dom Rep I think, the room was very comfortable and clean with great showering and toilet facilities. TV if you want to watch it does have English speaking channels, about 6-8, if you need to watch them.. Be aware though that there are rooms which have 2 small double beds in, which we were not expecting. If you want a king ask for one before you go.. Mini bar was hit and miss if it was restocked each day. Our maid Marie was spot on and always willing to assist.
Food- Have no major complaints about the food in any of the areas where we ate, the soup was never hot is about the only negative.
Staff- Always smiling and want to help you. On their toes all the time as the management constantly walked around popping in unannounced!
Pool- Yes the towel game is played here and there are those who reserve beds early hours then don't appear until lunch time, it would be nice if these selfish people could be sorted, but I don't know what the answer is! There are however some beds available until about 0800, after that you will struggle to get a decent shaded area..certainly around the pool.

The Ambar although separate from the other part of the Bahia resort is in it's own right busy. We had a mixture of quiet days and noisy days, it will depend on flight times in and out and if there are any large wedding parties there as these seam to be the noisy parties.
The pool bar is in the centre of the large pool so if it's noisy around the bar it will be noisy around the pool.

Overall we had a very good 2 weeks and would definitely return if the price is right next year.
A special thanks to our butler Eaudi, our pool waitresses Marlene and Bianca and not forgetting Juckson, Kelly and Junior who entertained us for our two weeks.

We recently stayed in the Ambar section Feb 2-9 ....what can I say about this resort , we absolutely loved it!!!!! This was our first trip to the Dominican and we are already planning next years trip. The people are fantastic I have to give a shout out to Hector in Don Pablo for the exceptional service, Victor and Lino fantastic beach bartenders always happy and singing and Rouqario (not sure of spelling) but he was always smiling as he swept the sand off our chair ... always stoping by to say hi and of course Migel who sings as he makes your omelet I always looked forward to seeing him each day. These people are always working hard and are so genuine . The resort was lush and beautiful. The food was good. There is plenty to do here and they always have something going on in the lobby which we looked forward to each night. Can't wait to go back.

We spent one week in Feb 2014 at the Grand Bahia Ambar in Punta Cana.
Our tour operator was Air Transat and I must say that over years of flying with different carriers-- Air Transat has been the best
We arranged a private transfer ahead of time with Gobecon and rented internet modem from them as well.
The internet worked and we had a lot of fun using Skype / Face Time on the beach. Unfortunately, Ambar does not have direct access by car to the hotel lobby. If you are not aware of this ahead of time it might be a little confusing because a cab will drop you of at another Hotel Grand Bahia complex. From there you have to use Hotel internal tram to get to Ambars Lobby.
Check-in was flawless as we where there before the bus from the airport arrived.
We got corner suite in Bloock 65, it was a great, quiet location half way between main buffet and pool. The only pitfall was the mattres which was incredibly uncomfortable to sleep on hard-as-stone pillows did not help .
Make sure you use the pillow menu before your first night. The flat screen TV was far too small for such a big room with terrible picture quality and even worst channel line up; close to none in English, but really who cares.
Someone mentioned that Ambar should have been advertised as a senior center as opposed to an adult only club, as there is almost no night life.
If you are not up by 7am, be prepared to get left over beach and pool spots (the towel game was at full force).
A beach, correct me if I'm wrong, consist of sand and water. The sand part was definitely Great but if the water rough be prepared to fight 4-5 feet waves, under tow etc.
There was a handful of ppl in the water for short periods of time. At the beginning I thought it was just the season or weather but our friends who visited Bavaro Beach said its a on going problem. The food was good but service was average.
My suggestion is that if your not a heavy tipper 5$ plus at the time you will not get any better service from the staff.
Souvenirs are ridiculously expensive and for jewelry you may as well go to 5th Ave. in NY.

If you do not care about rough seas and night life /fun atmosphere go for it.
All you will be paying is nice room sad but true .

The hotel was top notch in cleanliness. The grounds were always being groomed.
We did miss not having more seafood on the menu's. When we spoke to others that we picked up from neighboring hotels, on the way to town to shop, they were raving about having it. So we'll make sure we ask more about that when we plan our next trip.
We were taken into town to a couple gift shops but given very little time to relax and shop. I would have bought more but didn't have time to look at everything.

After deciding to holiday in the Dominican Republic, I did a lot of research on Trip Advisor and decided on this hotel. I was not disappointed with my choice. Travelling with my husband, sister and brother-in-law, it was lovely to be in an Adults Only hotel. Our room was great, albeit rather dark, and the very large bed was very comfortable. Although the entertainment was low key, apart from the Caribbean Beach Party on the Saturday night, you always had the option to go up to the other hotels in the complex for a bit more action.

Yes it was very hard to get a sunbed on the beach or round the pool unless you got up very early, (which we did), if you can't beat them join them!! We were told by another guest, that the Management had a meeting and decided they could no longer enforce the no reserving rule as it just wasn't working so they would leave us all to it!!!

We used the buffet restaurant mainly, which we really liked, tried the Sante Fey Mexican one night but decided we would be happy with the buffet the rest of the week. We had no trouble booking when we were there for the al-la-carte's.

The beach was great, soft sand, lovely turquoise water, most days it was quite big waves but very enjoyable. If you go to the right you can walk up to a market, open every day, about 45 minute walk up the beach, which was great fun to see with the water almost coming right up to the shops.

The staff are amazing at this hotel, nothing too much trouble. The whole complex was very clean, even to the point of when entering the Buffet restaurant a staff member was at the door spraying your hands with cleansing gel.

We did two half day trips with First Choice, the motorised buggies and the horse riding. Both were very good value, the horses did not look to be in the best of shape though, but the staff were very good, as they knew I was a bit nervous, having not ridden for a number of years, and they were always checking to see if I was ok.

This was our first time to the Dominican Republic, we really loved the people and would not hesitate to return to this hotel.

I stayed here in February 2014 with my spouse and two friends. Overall it's great, for an all-inclusive. One feels a bit like cattle, due to the sheer size of the resort and the number of people there. One thing to note is that the average age of guests is 60. At 30, it felt a bit like a retirement community for our taste. That said, it is a great place to relax. Certainly, for the price, the quality is impressive.

Three things that could be improved:
1. Food and Restaurants: As it was our first time at Ambar, we didn't realize that guests book the à-la-carte restaurants weeks in advance. Most of them were completely booked when we arrived at the hotel. This is disappointing. Best restaurants are Don Ambar and El Pescador. Avoid Bella Italia if you can. Buffet had a very broad selection, though lots of repeats. Food quality is not amazing, but good for an all-inclusive.
2. Over-crowding: We realized after our first day that you have to wake up by 7am to get chairs on the beach in the shade. Forget about the pool - all the chairs are reserved before 7am. This is extremely annoying. You shouldn't have to set your alarm at 6:45am on vacation to go reserve chairs on the beach. It seems Ambar can't quite manage the number of guests they have.
3. Gym: The gym only opens at 8am (it would be great if it opened at 6am considering how early some people get up at this hotel). Only one of two treadmills was working (the other was not fixed for the week we were there) and two of the four bikes were also broken. Gym is extremely small and overcrowded. Disappointing.

The best thing about Ambar is the staff! From the security guards on the beach, the waiters, the cleaning staff, to the bus drivers, every single staff member was exceptionally helpful and extremely nice and welcoming.

Tips: Book your restaurants well in advance. Ask for a king size bed well in advance. Wake up early to get a chair on the beach.

Overall, I would recommend it.

Room Tip: We made sure to request (before arrival) a king size bed. I would also recommend asking for a room o...

What a week. For a simple week away on the beach the Grand Bahia Principe Ambar Resort was wonderful. The numerous beach palapas provided a great way to enjoy the day and prevent the roasted tomato look acquired by some fair skinned canucks. Service was excellent with guys to help out and the servers coming by fairly regularly. You could walk up to the beach bar. The magnificent pool and requisite swim up bar with activities was an incredible afternoon destination. The Bavaro beach walk, approximately 5km, each day was picturesque and soothing for the soul. The Ambar allows booking in a la carte restaurants each night and we enjoyed the signature Don Pablo twice. All the restaurant options were great and the large buffet right by the beach and pool was convenient. The choices changed regularly and service was excellent. The resort is so large and we explored the Esmeralda and loved its champagne jacuzzi pool. The theatre shows were ok. Our corner room in building 69 was very large and the nicest surprise was no surprise. It was clean, comfortable and well maintained. We travelled on a Monday with Air Canada Vacations. Our check-in and transfers were seamless and no hassles. One small concern is that free wifi was limited to one hour per day and only accessible in the lobby.

We loved the home made Mamajuana

All in all, excellent and highly recommended.
