We are a couple in our mid 30's, we have been to GBP in Tenerife and Mexico so thought we would give Dominican Republic a go. I will not repeat what everone else has already said but give a few of our pros and cons:
Pros: made advanced bookings for a la carte restaurant via e=mail before we went and they were all ready when we got there, this made life lot easier for the first week. We also got complementary t-shirts and bottle of rum with a lovely thank you note for returning to a GBP resort on arrival.
The grounds were immaculate, we chose to walk everywhere and found staff working day and night to keep the whole place well maintained. We also had our room fumigated while we were there?!
We tried most of the A la carte restaurants, some more than once and really enjoyed Don Pablo and Bella Italia in particular. If you book Mikado remember to request the show table or you may be just on a normal table. No complaints either about the drinks, we enjoyed trying many new cocktails, and there was always a cocktail of the day. We normally chose places that have numerous a la carte restaurants as we are not that keen on buffets but we had no complaints about the buffets, the food was very varied and we learnt quickly to get what had just come out fresh from the kitchen if you wanted hotter food.

Cons: the air conditioning! we complained and they said they would look at it but it made no difference. Also our room cleaner kept taking the card out of the slot so the air conditioning was turned off! Also the shower head needed a good clean, only half of the holes were working!
We occasionally felt that food wise it was quantity rather than quality, especially some of the meat portions. The night we went to El Pescador not many people ate their meal, so I wouldn't recommend there, but if you do go avoid the suckling pig!
For a luxury resort, and I appreciate they have to cater for numerous age groups and nationalities the entertainment was a bit lacking. We were there for 2 weeks and found it strange that the entertainment programme was only for a week. It was also odd to have the nightly show in the tropicana theatre (which was like a sweat box) and not in the main pueblo principle, which is open air and a lot bigger. We also attended the White beach party, which was a great night until they started 'playing games' which looked like an adult version of moving statues! At this point a good majority of people left.

In our first week we did feel that you got a better service the more you tipped. I prefer to tip for good service rather that have to tip to get good service. However on our second week, when the regular staff go to recognise our faces (or the fact we had tipped in the first week) we were treated very differently.
I am not sure if we will return to the Dominican Republic again as there are too many other places I want to see (unless the price was right!) but we will definitely consider staying at another GBP resort again.

Room Tip: We were in block 63, in a corner room near the lobby. Avoid this if you like to sleep early as the m...

My Husband and I travel 2x a year. We went to Punta Cana in May and had a wonderful , wonder time. Although there are no direct Ocean View rooms(that I know of) the palm trees and garden were gorgeous. I was able to take pictures of new leaves sprouting, and flowers blossoming before our eyes.

On to the people....very sweet people, front desk went way beyond help when our room keep was giving trouble. Three key changes in one evening was annoying, but I don't see how it was their fault in that. Ps. Don't keep it with your cell phone...messes with the stip...

Pools were fantastic, beautiful beaches, and nice warm staff. Staying at the Ambar gave us he opportunity to go to the sister sites, and that was great. The guest at Ambar is a bit older crowd, so we spent some time at the Esmeralda pool where they had typical younger crown parties, but when we didn't want to be bother with the parties, we chilled poolside at Ambar.

Restaurants were impeccable, wait staff, to chefs were all fun and always had a smile. Great food, We loved the French restaurant, wow awesome food, and staff beyond exceptional. Dinner was so good we tipped $40 US dollars each time we had dinner.

The entertainment was also nice, always something going on, a trolly would pick you and bring you back. You have to keep in mind, this resort is HUGE, and you will be traveling to everywhere ...from everywhere. Stores are fairly priced. People are generally happy and we never had a problem.

I sure wish I could remember everyones name from the front desk to the pool staff. The girl by the pool was Pregnant, and I do hope she had a safe delivery. Desiree in the Lobby always had a smile on her face even when dealing with drunken people...always had a place in my heart for her.

Do tip something. It is an all-inclusive..I do understand, but nothing different than anywhere else with people working very hard, serving hundreds of people everyday. While we are complaining how hot it is...they are working in that heat. I always left little trinkets ,costume jewelry and a few dollars on the pillows for maid service. I saw them wearing a few things we put for them, and it made me feel extra special knowing they like it.

We would and will go back there in a heart beat, but we like to travel to as many different countries as possible...That being said, Ambar is the first on the list of being a repeat resort.

I always wanna travel to see Gods creations, Not disappointed at all.

WE loved Punta Cana, and will be back for sure !!!!

To the Staff at Ambar.....You guys were great...Thank you for our wonderful trip....Mrs. Lori Kim

Pros:
1)Obviously the beach and pools. Have been to Mexico, Jamaica and Bahamas. The beaches and pool even give the Atlantis a run for the money at a fraction of the cost.
2) Property very well landscaped and maintained.
3) Using Cheap Caribbean for the first time I was a bet skeptical, but everything went off without a hitch. Had an onsite representative if need which we didn't. Everything went smoothly. Well definitely use them again.
4) Truly an international destination. Nice meeting people from different countries all there for the same reason. To have fun and relax. Russians, Germans, Spaniards, Portuguese, French, British, Bolivian, Italians and of course Canadians.
5)Poolside and in the pool water zumba was great. Night time shows were entertaining.
6) Ambar is adults only which was nice, since we left our teenagers at home for our 20th anniversary celebration. We did have access to all 3 Don Pueblo properties and all are equally nice. The kids, after seeing the pictures definitely want to go next year....Hmmmmm.
Cons:
Ok here we go
1)Guest services; Francisco was not helpful at all when trying to book restaurants. He did not even tell us about special events or dining options. It was like we bothering him and/or his cell phone messaging/calls. No menus were available, which would have been nice to have instead of blindly choosing a restaurant However on a brighter note, Albania was a true professional. She hooked us up on the Tuesday night gala, which was probably the best meal, El Olivet ran a close second. Which leads me to the cuisine.
2) Average at best. Breakfast buffet above average. Buffet had same food everyday. Evening restaurants were below average, even the Don Pueblo (dress pants required) the restaurant I was most looking forward to was a major disappointment. Lobster was overcooked and rubbery. The staff was fighting amongst themselves, resulting in the chef bring us our meal 25 minutes after the appetizer.
3)Rooms although very nice, were just too hot, even at night for me and my wife. Probably because we were on the top floor.
4) Drinks average. Only one local beer severed, El Presidente-not bad. They have extensive distilled spirit options, just have to ask for the top shelf brands or you'll get the local stuff, which I do recommend the Brugal Dark Rum. Remember to bring your own drink tumbler as they only serve drinks in 8oz cups.
The cons are minor. Just thought I would share my experience.
The price point is unbeatable anywhere in the Caribbean, We will definetly be back next year, now about the kids coming along....Hmmmmmm...we'll see!

This was our first experience of the Gran Bahia chain so we weren’t sure what to expect as we have in the past stayed mainly at the Iberostar chain (which we have enjoyed). We booked a private taxi from the airport, which was done when we booked with first choice (£48 return-bargain), it was a bit frantic but once we located our taxi well worth it for a speedy arrival.

When you arrive at the resort you are dropped off at the main reception, Bavaro. After a few minutes wait we were taken on the golf cart with luggage down to the Ambar reception being greeted with a cold towel and refreshing drink whilst we checked in, the main lobby, reception was very impressive , clean and elegant. After a swift and cheerful check in our bags were taken to our room [68212] the second block away from the beach/pool, the room was big with a king size four poster bed, lounge area and balcony overlooking the mangroves at the side of the complex , it was nice and quiet on the balcony. The bathroom was also spacious with a Jacuzzi style bath a big walk in shower and good sized sink. If you can get a corner top floor room these look amazing, however our room was just as nice!

The layout of the resort was great as the you had a huge swimming pool with plenty of comfortable sunloungers around some with shade, didn’t really seem to get busy until late morning and even then no problem getting a bed. The pool bar was great – they don’t start serving drinks until 10 am unless you want water. To the side of the pool was a nice beach bar serving nice selection of food and drink with some very entertaining staff. Along the side of the bar is a long board walk going down to a quiet section of the beach , the bar being a hop away with entertaining staff who again always seemed to be cheerful.

The beach itself is beautiful, the water can be a bit rough at times but still safe to swim in, at this side of the beach we had some interesting trees which were often photographed. Also a huge thank you to the person who went around cleaning sand off the loungers, it was so nice to see that big smile and excellent service sorry we aren’t very good at remembering names.

The food at the hotel was excellent, with the main buffet/restaurant having a different theme each night again a good selection of food to suit all tastes. We especially enjoyed the seafood gala evening on a Tuesday night, you do have to book this.

We were lucky to try a lot of the restaurants our favourite was the gourmet Don Pablo the food was nicely presented and tasted delicious, we ate there twice. Another favourite was El Olivio the Mediterranean restaurant down by the side of the beach restaurants. Others we tried were the Grill House, Maiko, Portofino and El Pescador all spacious with air con and good selections, we also went to the Bella Italia but didn’t bother going back as this was our least favourite. You are allowed to book as many restaurants as you like, you can do this by going to the lobby there are desks either side were you can make reservations opens at 8.30am . The guest relations are happy to help even when needing a certain amount of patience with the long lists of reservations for the week ahead.

There was always entertainment in the evening in the Ambar lobby, we would often have a cocktail or two before going up to the Bavaro to see the evening show, this was situated in the big theatre by the side of the lobby, most of the shows were really entertaining especially the Michael Jackson one on a Mon night, get there early for a seat, it starts at 9.20pm, we booked the Maiko early one Mon night as it was in the Bavaro section near to the theatre so you could enjoy the meal and didn’t need to rush to get to the theatre to watch the show.

After the main show there was often something going on in the main plaza, going out the front of the Bavaro lobby to the side, you can also find the casino and disco amidst a selection of brightly coloured shops selling local souvenirs.

There are plenty of small trains running through the resort day and night, after the first day once we had our sense of direction we walked everywhere to keep some calories down. A couple of times we had a drink in the Esmerelda lobby which made a nice change, it was nice to see what the other parts of the resort looked like.

We went on 3 excursions, the first being the popular Outback Safari, the other 2 trips we booked with Sea vis, we had read about on line, these were Saona Island and Jungle tour, both of these excursions offered excellent value for money our guides on both tours keen to show the true flavour of the Dominican without the feeling of being in a tourist trap, it also focuses a lot on the ecological side of the country, the Saona tour gives you a chance to see how they are supporting the sea turtles by helping the young turtles hatch and if you are lucky getting a chance to hold one, this being just one of the many highlights on the tour, if you get chance check out the itinerary well worth a look (written reviews on the Seavis excursions on TripAdvisor).

We tried to tip as often as we could the problem being the service was so good throughout the hotel we wouldn’t have enough money to tip every one. So as a rule we left a dollar a day each for the maid, drinks and turn down service. As often as we could we would tip dollars to bar staff, even when not leaving a tip a curious gracious always brought a smile, whenever we could we tried to use our limited Spanish as best we could after all we are the visitors to a different country and as such wanted to show as much respect to a very special country with warm and polite people, the grounds of the hotel were immaculately tidy, the gardeners and other workmen always busy with a smile. Must make a special thank you to Nathan our first choice rep who helped us settle in to the resort and was always on hand if needed. He was great!

My only niggle was there were photographers on the beach and around the pool area that were carrying a small monkey (on a lead), sitting it on peoples shoulders and taking photos and then obviously selling them (I think from the hotel). Being an animal lover it distressed me to see this poor little creature in the red hot sun being passed from pillar to post all for the sake of 'entertainment'. I was not amused!

We had a fabulous holiday in a truly 5 star hotel our only regret being the holiday went so quickly, wish we were still there. Gracious to everyone who helped to make it so memorable. Who knows maybe one day we might return. We will definitely look at booking other Gran Bahia Hotels in the future!

Room Tip: Corner Suites look amazing, we were in 68212 which was in the 2nd block back from the pool/beach and...

Having twice stayed at the sister-resort, the Esmeralda with our families, when we saw a last minute three figure deal with Air Canada at The Ambar we didn't hesitate and thought that we pretty knew what to expect.
In fact it exceeded our already high expectations.

For Canadians flying out of Toronto on Rouge, take a few granola bars, your favourite candy and a good book. Oh, and they don't sell Duty Free. In fairness the cabin crew worked hard to keep us supplied with water, pop and tea/coffee.

It seems that many reviewers feel that that have to make some nit-picky complaint almost for their own satisfaction even though they likely only paid around $1,000 for a luxury week in paradise, so here is mine. There was no Green Tea! But does it matter or does anyone else care..no and frankly neither do I !

Overall it was the best all-inclusive that we have been to out of many Iberostars, GBP's and others in the Caribbean. Unbeatable value-for-money.
The food was the best in all of the restaurants and the Don Pablo was as fine as you will get anywhere.
I judge the food by both the quality of the cooking and the quality of the food for my personal likes.
Buffet food by it's very nature cannot be served piping hot for every dish. There are freshly prepared food stations but the rest is a balance being renewed frequently.
As to the quality, my three favs. are smoked salmon, prosciutto and blue cheese.
So full marks from me for plenty of each at every meal.
Super appetisers and decadent desserts.
Same with the drinks. Premium is when I can enjoy $64 a bottle Johnnie Walker Black on the rocks, I don't care about a special water, or Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic. My wife has simple drink tastes and stuck to champagne all day every day with never a headache!
The French wines in the main buffet are again the best we have had.
The staff and service were excellent with smiles and no bad attitudes. They deserve their 'tips'.
The rooms are fine, we requested and received exactly what we could have wished for, with the best bathroom we have ever had, that and the whole resort was spotless.

It is tempting to mention individual employees but that would be unfair as it truly was a team effort with even the Asst. G.M. clearing tables.

However, as anyone who has ever 'managed' knows, that achievement has to come from the top, so a big 'pat on the back' to General Manager Mr. Jose Lima.
He is the most personable, available, approachable G.M. that we have ever met (well there was the now retired Carlos at the Esmeralda!) who not only runs a fine resort but is happy to take time and speak with guests and hear of any concerns.
Gracias Amigo !

We very much expect to return for more R & R at The Amber, simply, the best.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are cooler.

Apart from one tiny thing - the barmen in the cabana on the beach were actually quite surly at times, unless you were a massive tipper, in which case they were all over you like a rash! (and yes, we did tip!) Place was spotless, staff courteous, rooms large and bathrooms large, immaculately clean and well maintained. Food was good with a good variety, although the food in a couple of the speciality restaurants wasn't brilliant (I think it was the Italian and the Mediterrean ones), the stuff off the general buffet was better! Maid service was great. Entertainment was loud and mainly karaoke, but there were other places to go on the complex to escape it!!

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room, which was a blessing as the entertainment got quite noisy!

We went to the Ambar, September 2013, yes, it's taken me a year to write this review ...

The service was outstanding: front desk, housekeeping, restaurants and management. We did tip but it was a pleasure to do so.

The rooms are huge, well decorated and clean. The bathrooms are large with shower stall, separate tub and toilet enclosure.

As I've said in the title, the food was amazing. We have travelled to the Caribbean for 20 years and never had we had food of this calibre. We had intended to eat dinner at the a la carte restaurants but when we saw the quality and variety of food at the buffet, we changed our minds. There was every kind of fish, seafood and meat that you can think of. The desserts were so varied and delicious it was difficult to make up your mind.

On the downside, the beach. Even though long white sand, good for walking, the main beach by the Ambar is eroded and continues to. Water was rough on several days.

Nice walk down the beach, right of resort when facing the sea, there is a nice little market where you can buy souvenirs.

Highly recommend this resort if you are looking for romantic getaway with excellent food. This is an adults only resort. We went to the other resorts on the sites and they were crowded and noisy, both day and night. Always happy to back to the Ambar.

Room Tip: Closest to the beach. We however had the second row away from the beach. But it suited us well as...
