We are a couple in our mid 30's, we have been to GBP in Tenerife and Mexico so thought we would give Dominican Republic a go. I will not repeat what everone else has already said but give a few of our pros and cons:
Pros: made advanced bookings for a la carte restaurant via e=mail before we went and they were all ready when we got there, this made life lot easier for the first week. We also got complementary t-shirts and bottle of rum with a lovely thank you note for returning to a GBP resort on arrival.
The grounds were immaculate, we chose to walk everywhere and found staff working day and night to keep the whole place well maintained. We also had our room fumigated while we were there?!
We tried most of the A la carte restaurants, some more than once and really enjoyed Don Pablo and Bella Italia in particular. If you book Mikado remember to request the show table or you may be just on a normal table. No complaints either about the drinks, we enjoyed trying many new cocktails, and there was always a cocktail of the day. We normally chose places that have numerous a la carte restaurants as we are not that keen on buffets but we had no complaints about the buffets, the food was very varied and we learnt quickly to get what had just come out fresh from the kitchen if you wanted hotter food.
Cons: the air conditioning! we complained and they said they would look at it but it made no difference. Also our room cleaner kept taking the card out of the slot so the air conditioning was turned off! Also the shower head needed a good clean, only half of the holes were working!
We occasionally felt that food wise it was quantity rather than quality, especially some of the meat portions. The night we went to El Pescador not many people ate their meal, so I wouldn't recommend there, but if you do go avoid the suckling pig!
For a luxury resort, and I appreciate they have to cater for numerous age groups and nationalities the entertainment was a bit lacking. We were there for 2 weeks and found it strange that the entertainment programme was only for a week. It was also odd to have the nightly show in the tropicana theatre (which was like a sweat box) and not in the main pueblo principle, which is open air and a lot bigger. We also attended the White beach party, which was a great night until they started 'playing games' which looked like an adult version of moving statues! At this point a good majority of people left.
In our first week we did feel that you got a better service the more you tipped. I prefer to tip for good service rather that have to tip to get good service. However on our second week, when the regular staff go to recognise our faces (or the fact we had tipped in the first week) we were treated very differently.
I am not sure if we will return to the Dominican Republic again as there are too many other places I want to see (unless the price was right!) but we will definitely consider staying at another GBP resort again.
