“Nice getaway”
Reviewed April 21, 2013 via mobile

We just returned from staying at the Ambar. Overall the resort is beautiful. The beach was probably the most beautiful beach we have ever visited and you didn't have to get up super early to get a decent spot on the beach. We visited the beach every day because it was much cooler relaxing at the beach than at the pool. Our room was also very nice, however the air conditioning did not cool the room enough for us. The food was not great at the buffet or the a la carte, there were times when it was hard to find something that wasn't undercooked or didn't look like it had been sitting there all day. The bread was wonderful and that is what we ended up eating most days. Room service breakfasts were wonderful! We paid the $49 for 7 days of wifi and were able to use the wifi in the room, pool area, and on the beach. this was an extra expense that we thoroughly enjoyed. This was our second stay in a Gran Bahia Don Pablo resort and would definitely visit another Don Pablo resort, probably not in Punta Cana, but only because the airport is ridiculously slow moving and hot, but this is no fault of the resort! I would give apple vacations 5 stars, as they were very helpful during the entire vacation process, but would not recommend flying in or out of punta Cana on a Saturday! One last comment....the spa was awful, and would be the reason I am rating the Ambar at 4 stars. The robes and bikinis they give you are not suitable for larger people and that made it uncomfortable from the beginning. The masseuse was rough and smacked me when I couldn't comfortably bend my arm the way she wanted. There was also nowhere to relax after the massage, they said they were finished and walked us directly to the locker room. All in all a good vacation, just a few areas of concern, but the Ambar is a beautiful well kept resort, much different than other resorts we drove through on airport transportation.

There are so many positives about our stay at the Ambar. Yes a beautiful resort, terrific rooms, fantastic food........but the very best of the resort are the people who work there. You were all wonderful. I can't wait to come back.
Marcos, thank you for the beach volleyball games, the music, and your friendship. Francisco thank you for picking up D cell batteries for our player. Miguel thanks for the songs you sang while making breakfast omelettes. Franklin, the buffet food rocked. Thanks to the staff at the front desk for helping me set up a surprise for my sweetheart on our anniversary. I can't say enough about the hospitality of the great people of the Dominican Republic.
Salute,
Dave Laughlin

My sister and I spent a fabulous week at the Grand Bahia Principe Ambar at the beginning of April. The staff were amazing and extremely helpful especially Emmanuel who became our go-to person if we had any questions. He was very solicitous and always welcomed us when he saw us. Digna fixed problems I was having with WiFi and had the problem with our air conditioner repaired immediately. Jorge, on a Customer Service desk, was awesome. The food and its presentation was fantastic. Having breakfast at the open air restaurant on the beach is a great way to start the day. A word of advice, the a la carte restaurants get booked up quickly. E-mail Customer Service a week before you leave to make sure you get your preferred reservations. Reserving lounges on the beach requires early morning trips, especially for those closer to the ocean.

Room Tip: Corner suite looks great if available

Very enjoyable stay. All staff were very polite and very accommodating. Definitely glad we stayed at the Adults only hotel. No kids around! Plenty of free food and drinks throughout the day. Night time shows were somewhat amateurish, but very entertaining. "Snack Bar" by pool is an understatement. They served burgers, hot dogs, pizza, fries, desserts etc. and of course drinks galore... that's definitely beyond "snacks." You will be subjected to sales pitches from the moment you get off your flight and even throughout your stay, but if you say no, they are polite and leave you alone. Definitely recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Stayed on third floor. Very quiet. Not a beach view, but so many trees that it felt very serene.

Reviewed April 21, 2013

On April 5th my husband and I arrived at the Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar Don Pablo Collection and spent two fantastic weeks there. This place is awesome. I do not understand how people can complain about this resort. We found that they spoke very good English but hey, English is not their native tongue, if that bother you then maybe you should restrict your vacations to English speaking countries and stop expecting people all over the world to learn to speak English just so they can communicate with you. Would you feel the same if they visited your country and then complained that you did not speak Spanish to them. As for the time share thing, yeah, you may feel it was a rip but if you choose to attend than you have now been educated on the fact that you do not get anything for free in this country or any other and you will not make that mistake again. Besides, there may be some people who are interested. We were not, so we did not attend.

This was our 9th trip south, 7th in Punta Cana staying at different resorts each time and we can honestly say that this was by far the best resort that we have stayed at. The resort is beautiful, the service is beyond reproach. I mean, when you are laying on your chair at the beach, not only do they come around taking your orders for drinks, or offering you fresh fruit, but they even have people who come by and remove your garbage and sweep the sand off of your chair for you. What more could you possibly need?

THE RESORT - The resort is as big or as small as you would like. By that I mean that the resort itself is huge and if you are the type of person who likes to have room to wander around then this is the resort for you as there are many different sections to the resort and, staying at the Ambar, you have access to pretty much all of them. However, if you don’t like to wander, you can stay just in the Ambar section and still have everything you could want. This section is beautiful to look at and, being an adults only, very relaxing. It does have a few of its own restaurants or you can choose go to some of the others that are located throughout the resort. It has its own entertainment at the Lobby at night or you can choose to go to the main theater for the nightly show there. There are tram cars that can take you around the resort and up to the other lobbies and they run along the three main road that go through the resort. There are no tram cars running within the Ambar which is wonderful because it means that you don’t have to hear them going by all the time. The Ambar is definitely a cut above the Bavaro or Punta Cana sections of the resort. It seems like the Esmeralda section is on the same level as the Ambar but children are allowed in this section. So, if you are looking to book here I would definitely recommend either the Ambar or the Esmeralda according to your preference.

THE ROOMS - We were in room 67306 and loved it. Being on the top floor, there is no noise from above you at all and I think there is less traffic in the hallways. Our balcony was on the back of the building and overlooked the green belt between our resort and the next so was extremely quiet and also very private. If you looked to the right you still have a nice view of the beach as well. When you went out the front of our building, you were at the pool. We loved the location. The room itself was spacious and nicely appointed. We had a true king size bed (not two doubles pushed together) that was amazingly comfortable. This is the first resort that we actually found the bed to be comfortable and not like sleeping on a board. And to make it all the better, there was a choice of pillow types in the room. We had 8 pillows in our room to choose from and each one was comfortable. The bed linen was also high quality and soft. The bathroom was also spacious and it was nice to have the separate shower.

RESTAURANTS - As for the buffets we tended to use only the two at the Ambar. Again, just much more relaxing. We did try the one at the Bavaro and while the food was just as good as at the Ambar we found it was too busy and noisy. You make reservations to go to the a-la-cart restaurants. We had no problem making the reservations and we were even able to change a few with no problems at all. We went to the Japanese restaurant. The meal and show there was really good. We also went to the Garden Grill (steak house) a few times. The waiter there named Manuel is awesome and will go out of his way to make sure that you enjoyed your meal. And the food there was fantastic. We also used the room service twice, once for breakfast and once for supper. The breakfast was great and was delivered very quickly. It was such a treat to just get up and have breakfast brought directly to your room. Everything was very fresh and there was more than we could possibly eat. We also did the room service one evening. Again the food was delivered quickly and it was still nice and hot. We were very impressed.

EXCURSION - We did go on one excursion to Catalina Island. It was wonderful It was $145 US per person but went from 7 am to about 7:30 pm and included transportation, drinks, and a wonderful BBQ meal on the island. You went on a bus to a small museum type town. After exploring the town you got on a river boat and went up and back down the river. You were then transferred to the catamaran. Once on the catamaran we left the river and sailed on the ocean for about 30 minutes or so and then stopped to do some snorkeling which was amazing, then back on the catamaran and sailed over to the island where they had a wonderful meal. Lazed on the beach for a couple of hours and then returned back on a sailboat. It was an amazing day and so worth the money. The tour guide Adam was fantastic and gave a wonderful history of the island and of the Dominican Republic overall.

SERVICE - The overall service at this resort is fantastic but sometimes it is the little things that put it over the top. Little things like, no beach towel cards to have to deal with. What a treat, the beach towels are in your room when you arrive and you just turn them in to the little hut by the pool at the end of the day and get a fresh clean set first thing the next morning. Service. Or at the lobby when they walk around with carts, one for drinks and one that is just filled with beautifully decorated chocolates. Again, service. Or, when we came back to our room after a day at the pool to find a bouquet of roses on our dresser. They even took the time to call our room the day before we left to ask if we enjoyed our vacation and wish us a safe journey home. Service, service, service, you just can’t beat it here. Another perfect example, a very nice young couple we met from England told us their story. He wanted to propose to his girlfriend and he made arrangements with the hotel to have “Will you marry me” spelled out in rose petals on the bed. So when they checked in, and were taken to their room, it was the first thing she saw when she walked in. (Congrats again Matt and Pippa) That is the type of service you get at the Ambar.

The maid service here is also top notch. Our room was perfectly cleaned every single day and even clothes that we had left on the coach would be neatly folded. The towel decorations were great and much appreciated.

The staff at the pool were also wonderful. Bianca was great fun and always remembered what you wanted to drink. She is one hard working girl and always very pleasant. Yunior and Confessor were also fun to watch and eager to make sure you got what you wanted.

The grounds crew do an absolutely amazing job of keeping the resort looking beautiful and clean. They are constantly fixing any little thing that is not just right or giving a fresh coat of paint to things to make it look clean. They are everywhere doing their job but not the least bit intrusive. They are truly the unsung heroes of the resort.

We loved this place and have no complaints at all. We would highly recommend the Ambar to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation where they will feel pampered at a reasonable price. Do yourself a favour and book the resort. You will not regret it.

Room Tip: Rooms on top floor and closer to the seem pool are quieter at night. From talking with other people...

I'm rating this on my second day here and completely satisfied with our stay so far. The staff was very accommodating. We told them we were on our honeymoon and they moved us to a corner suite. The room was decorated with flowers, fruit, and a banner with "honeymoon" on it.
The location is spectacular with white beaches and clear blue water. The staff comes around and offers drinks on the beach. You really feel pampered here.
We just returned from a party on the beach and had a blast. I will come back in a few days to let you know more about our experience.

Our third trip and the staff and accommodations we just as good as our first trip.

Thank you to Santos, our bell hop. Always eager to help us out with luggage and providing courteous service, especially when the 2nd part of our party arrived. Also, on the day we were leaving, Santos showed up for work early - he wanted to make sure he saw us and he personally made sure we made it to our airport transportation when we were leaving DR.

Christian with VIP Guest Services has a tough job making sure that the Ambar guests are satisfied, and he certainly provided! He is also very cordial and always acknowledged us with a huge smile, and a firm handshake whenever our paths would cross.

Ediza, our Chiquita :) So friendly, always had a smile and kind words for us. Ediza and the other waitresses and bar staff, in particular Victor, were always eager make sure our glass was always full! and Victor is quite good at his Flair Bar tending :)

Our room was keep extremely clean and well stocked with towels, alcohol and amenities you'd expect from a five star. We always had fresh flowers and flower petals adorning the room and the turn down service is a nice touch :) The grounds keepers work hard at making sure the grounds were immaculate!

Franklin the grill chef and Melvin the pasta chef at the lobby buffet were wonderful! Always had an excellent meal in their capable hands! The buffets at the lobby and the beach were always great with a large selection.

The a la carte's are okay - but we did fully enjoy the Makio (table show) at the Bavaro resort.

The beach service was excellent - waitress to take our bar orders and in particular, Franklin who worked cleaning up the beach area. Franklin always made sure our dirty cups made their way to the trash and he always made sure the beach sand was brushed off of our chairs.

The beach vendors are respectful - you only had to say no thank you once and they wouldn't bother you.

Now for where we think improvements could be made...

There should always be at least one buffet available 24 /7 ... there is sometimes a 2 hour window between meal services where ALL the buffets are closed. You can order from a snack menu or order room service but when your looking for a quick bite, these options just take too long.

The house wine is mediocre at best - you can order from a wine menu, for extra $ :(

The Ambar Lobby/bar should consider closing at midnight (instead of 11pm)- yes we have use of the other facilities where entertainment can be seen and drinks are available but people are on vacation - their staying up a bit later and would like to enjoy a few more drinks and even soft music - at the resort your actually staying at.

The main courses at the a la carte could be improved - simple elegant would be better than covered up in sauce stuff; but we did fully enjoy the appetizers.

If my do not disturb sign is out, please respect it... sometime house keeping would enter our room, although they always knocked first, even when the do not disturb was on the door,

Finally, for a five star, adult only resort, you need to invest in more comfortable beach chairs, those blue nylon back breakers don't belong on a 5 start private beach, and what happened to the beach entertainment?

All in all though, our two weeks in paradise was relaxing, pampered, and extremely enjoyable.

Thank you once again Ambar... hope to see you next year !
