Stayed at the Ambar for 11 nights in March 2013 with my partner.
Good points; very clean resort. Rooms spacious and cleaned daily. Staff very friendly, but found the pool towel man to be miserable and unhelpful.
Bad points; This resort is huge!! It took us days to work out where everything is, and even longer to work out the bus routes round it, i.e the blue line, green line, red line!! We felt that the resort had to many people for the bars and restaurants to cope with. Everyday you end up queing at the lobby bar, the pool bar, the buffet restaurant, the toilets, especially the pool toilets, there are only two ladies, yet hundreds of beds round the pool. I also found continued problems with toilets all over the resort, including our room!!, being blocked and unusable.Trying to get clean pool towels each day was a problem too, considering this is a 5 star resort, the miserable towel man would send you away saying got none, come back tomorrow!! Beds at the pool.....awful... you need to get out there by 6.45am to get two and a brolly. Al a cartes are mainly buffet service.

Would i go back to the Ambar......Never!!!

This was our first time in the Dominican Republic and it won't be our last! The beaches are beautiful! The weather was excellent! 80's all week! This resort is very nice, but not a 5*! You need to be sure to make your reservations for the specialty restaurants early on in the week or actually before you arrive, especially the steak restaurant! We enjoyed the buffet more than the speciality restaurants, they just were not anything special! The buffet served something new every night, especially lobster night! Yummy! There are bars on the beach and servers walking around! You can easily get a drink! If you want something special they are more than willing to mix it up for you! The staff, for the most part, is very friendly! The beds are extremely hard, but you get used to them by the end of your stay, unless, of course, you like sleeping on a hard mattress! If you are a fitness nut, the fitness center "SUCKS"!!!! It is old and down in the dungeon! Get your exercise on the beach playing volley ball or in the pool! In closing, we really enjoyed our trip, especially with friends and family! We will go back to the Dominican, but not this particular resort!

We just got back from our first visit and hopefully not the last to the Ambar. We loved the fact that it was so close to the beach and so quiet at night. There were shows every night at the theatre if you were interested. We seen the Michael Jackson show. They are actually better than MJ ever was. To see the theatre
shows you have to trolley up to the Bavaro/Esmeralda . We considered the Ambar to be like the suburbs of the complex. We liked that because when it was time for bed , you didn't hear distant beats of music, or crowds.
The Ambar section closed down the lobby bar at 11 pm. Some nights we wished it was open later. It's a great spot to mingle. Mornings at the lobby was also a delight. Each morning we would take our iPads down and sip coffee from the coffee/tea bar before breakfast. So relaxing. The staff were amazing. We loved Miguel the man who makes omlets everyday for everyone. He is so happy. A joy to be around. Marco, guy at the pool, bingo guy is amazing. He is part of the entertainment at night as well, hosting the karaoke. He gets everyone involved simply to have a good time. His side kick Yanette? Is totally the same. They are a great couple to get the place hopping.....all the crew was great. Santa , bar waitress is a saint. What a gal. These people see so many people each day but she remembered what we drank! Ambar would be very smart to keep ALL their staff, right to the cleaning staff, and use them as a model for what to look for in new hires.
We went over to the Esmeralda and were disappointed to see how understaffed the bar was. So many people to serve and the staff were stressed and not very pleasant. Can't say I blame them. I felt with being an all inclusive, the management, owners of the Esmeralda don't really care If their staff is over worked or that the customers are waiting. Less liquor consumption. means less $$$.
We ate at the Mexican, Garden Grill, Japanese, and he BBQ a la carts. My favourite was the Mexican. I heard great things about the steak at the Garden Grill , but I felt the steak cooked at the Mexican and the Buffett was better. At the Buffett you should try the stone bass. Amazing. Cooked to perfection.
We stayed at the 62 villa section. Worked out perfect. Close to everything.
I love the resort and would recommend it.
The only thing we didn't like was the bait call from front desk claiming we won a prize and are entered to win a grand prize for a free trip to Punta Cana. It's a registration process to timeshares. They cart you to a crowded, hot room to try to hook you to a timeshare. You stay there over and hour and they give you a pass to a massage or golf package to leave you with a good "feeling" about the "meeting". We signed up reluctantly, but fled quickly once we seen the people crowded in a room that looked uncomfortable. Somewhat resembled a chicken coop. Not interested.....I vacation to relax, not to get swindled......we get enough of that at home.
To end my review, we absolutely love the Dominican spirit of its people. We hope it never caters to us so much that they lose who they are. They are such a joy to spend time with.

Room Tip: We stayed in villa 62. Close to everything. Very quiet at night. Great sleeps.

We've stayed at Bahia Principe twice. In April '09 and '10 with both times being at the Ambar Section. We went on the recommendation of my parents who have stayed there a few times. We went with two other couples both times.

Positive:
-The place is beautiful and huge! Be prepared to walk...but you'll enjoy the beauty of the grounds. Everything was clean and well maintained. Vegetation was nice and the wildlife at night is great.

- The shows are pretty good. Not great..but entertaining. Nice to have a few drinks and watch.

- Nightlife is fun. We hit the club after drinking all day and had a blast. There is a karaoke bar infested with Europeans and Canadians (they can't sing) but it's fun to watch them. They are good people.

- Food is pretty good. Better than average. The main dining hall has lots of choices and we ate at the habachi, mexican, mediterranean, and italian restaurants. All were decent.

- Beach: Beautiful. I've been all over the caribbean and I hate getting to these places and climbing over coral reefs to get to the water. Sand was clean and they actually let you swim out quite a bit. Lifeguards started in'10 and it was a new site.

Areas to Work on:
- IF you stay at Ambar, good luck getting into any restaurants. They keep forcing you to the Mediterranean and telling you that the other places are booked. We had to fight like hell to get into the other places.

- We had one security issue. My wife had $100 in two fifty dollar bills tucked into a section of her wallet which was in the safe. We entered a four digit code on the safe but on our third night, the money was missing. My wife was planning on bringing it to the casino that night. There is no need for money at this place so she wasn't carrying around cash. When we reported the loss, we weren't treated very well. We were told that we lost the money from the front desk. When we persisted, they finally sent a security guard to go to the room with us. While we were walking, we heard him mention "loco Americano"....I haven't studied Spanish in a long time, but I figured they were talking about us. In the room, the security guard told us it was impossible to open. When I asked him what would happen if we locked the safe and then checked out...he told us the safe would be locked forever. I don't buy that. I'm sure someone has a master key and we definitely lost cash here. Upsetting after a great trip.

Bottom line, the place is not five star but we really enjoyed ourselves. We are looking to going back in April of 2014 with a baby and family. We learned not to bring cash!

Room Tip: You have to choose to be closer to beach or nightlife...but it's a nice walk so you can't make a wrong choice.

We arrived at the Ambar March 25th - March 31st and we felt happy to be back! Our room/building was not what we had requested but the following day we were moved to an outstanding corner room at Bldg. 60. Alex and Jorge were both instrumental in making this happen. Yeyson and Emmanuel always stopped to chat with us and spend a moment to make sure we were happy and taken care of. We made quick friends with Bianca at the pool area and she could not have been more attentive. We were extremely surprised to find that some of the staff including Juan in the Don Pablo, Jorge and Enerolisa in the lobby bar area remembered us from our 2011 stay. That was such a nice feeling and made us feel very even more welcome. Hats off to Wilson and Johnathan who were wait staff in the breakfast/lunch dining area by the pool and the dinner buffet area. We also had such a delightful time with Packy in the dinner buffet area. So sweet and so pleasant. Also I would like to compliment the security staff who were professional and on the job! We did see them in "action" once or twice as some vacationers struggle to maintain themselves! We did unfortunately witness a medical emergency and I must share that the staff was outstanding in their efforts. Management at the Ambar is doing there very best and that is evident by the happy employees and their excellent customer service skills. We definately will recommend the Ambar to anyone who asks! The food is always good and plentiful and there are so may options! Just a beautiful place to visit!

Room Tip: Buildings 60, 64 and 67 the best and we liked being on the 2nd floor this stay and we loved the corner room!
