“Mid November 2012”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for 7 nights in mid November 2012. We were looking for an adults only in P.C., and after some internet research, we went with the Ambar. We don't have anything bad to say about the place. The food selection was very good, from buffets to their numerous restaurants, the quality was above average, and the reservations were painless (take some nice clothes… dress code). They had top notch alcohol which is a rarity at many all inclusives, and a big plus for me :-). The grounds were beautiful and well kept. The pool was huge, clean, and a great place to spend an afternoon. The beach was great, powdery sand, and we had no problem finding chairs near the water any time of day. The ocean was warm and relatively calm; we bobbed around in there plenty. The room was nice, and well kept. I gave the kid that stocked the fridge a ten spot the first day; we had plenty of bottled water and a few extra “adult beverages” every day.

The only thing that kind of bummed me out was that they didn't have a real hot-tub. They had these 3 circular sitting areas that looked like large hot-tubs, but they were open to, and fed by the pool. It was kind of strange... same temp as the pool. That is really my only quasi knock on the place.

Bottom line: If you're looking for a week away from the kids, on a nice beach, at a nice resort, we would highly recommend the Ambar.

We stayed here from March 10th to the 15th. What a gorgeous place from the lobby to the room to the grounds to the most beautiful beach. It was just lovely. Clean and sparkling. Unlike other places there was definitely enough room and beach chairs to find with plenty of sun or shade whatever your prefer. The staff that work there are amazing so nice and hard working, kind and they definitely go the extra mile to make your stay amazing. Really well managed. The cleaning staff were really too eager to get cleaning in the morning...they woke us up every morning before 8am scrubbing the hall floor or yelling at each other. Really annoying.

The food, however, is horrid, bland, boring and overcooked. Even at the restaurants the food was uneventful. It was the worst food experience I"ve ever had at an all inclusive. Don't get me wrong the food is edible, but that is about the only positive. I never would have thought that the best meal I'd have on vacation was at Friday's on the drive home. I don't really even like fridays.

there was absolutely no character to the place. The music I thought was history in the early 70s. No live music, no modern music. Like the food the atmosphere was really bland.

All in all we won't be coming back unless there is a new executive chef and to give this place some identity.

In general, the grounds are well-maintained and clean considering the size and the number of tourists in attendance during spring break. We stayed in the adult side which is more low key and with an older crowd. The rooms are big and ok but not really a 5 star quality i.e. the bathroom made a constant noise, the shower door did not close properly and the patio door was difficult to lock. The beds are fine but the pillows need to be upgraded. The maid service was excellent and efficient with a turn down service.
The gym sorely needs an upgrade with outdated cardio equipment.
Pool chairs were hard to come by after 11am. The beach is beautiful but be weary of undertow; the waves are not for the faint of heart. Walking is great on the beach; the scenery is exceptional.
The restaurants were very good with excellent service. The buffet was ok; lacking a little in variety
and the food was sometimes cold.
Unfortunately, on arrival we were downgraded to the Bavaro side because of overbooking of the Ambar side but we were not advised of this fact upon check-in. I was aware of the problem because of previous reviews. The rooms are not at all comparable even if the resort says they are. This seems to be a common practice for this resort after speaking to other guests....I consider this to be an unpleasant way to begin a vacation and not being told of the downgrade rather disappointing for a "five-star" resort....

Room Tip: Anywhere on the Ambar side is fine

We had stayed at the Gran Bahia 7 years ago when it was a lot smaller. They have added the Esmeralda and Ambar since then.
We stayed at the Ambar for 4 nights with 2 other couples. The resort itself is beautiful and extremely clean. Great pool and the beach is incredible. The restaurants were good with my 2 favorites being Don Pablo and the beach barbecue.
My only real complaint was with the front desk staff. We felt they were very rude when we asked them questions about the resort and we were quite upset until we met Roberto our butler. He was great and smoothed everything out.
Overall the resort is great and if they could improve the front desk staff I would have given it 5 stars. They were rude on 3 different occasions. Don't let it deter u from the rest of the Ambar.

My wife and I have just returned from a 2-week holiday at the Ambar. It was our third stay in 4 years and once again we found everything we could possibly hope for. The hotel is extremely attractive, clean, comfortable and well managed. Clearly the comfort of its adult guests is their top priority. The staff is happy, friendly and helpful without being obtrusive. Meals are excellent and provide both variety and quality; there are several restaurants from which to choose, but we were happiest at the buffet. The beach is gorgeous, the water warm and inviting and the reserved area provides plenty of space and palapas. If you prefer the pool, there is a large and well-tended pool area between the rooms and the beach. The grounds are beautifully tended and offer breathtaking views at every turn. The senior management is discretely there to ensure that all is well and in this they have succeeded admirably.

The bottom line: You can count on a memorable holiday at the Ambar with everything running smoothly and well. From a value point of view, it would be difficult to find better. Just relax and enjoy. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: We prefer a junior suite on an upper floor near the beach, but all rooms are roughly equivalent and...

What a wonderful time. We were there March 7 - 14, 2013. Weather was good, no problems getting sunning chairs at the beach or swimming pools.
Highlight was the quality, quantity and variety of foods offered in the Ambar buffet dining room. We tried a few of the al la carte restaurants, Italian so so, French very good, Japanese very good.
I know you are kind of tired when you first get there but if you want to break up the feed frenzy, you need an a la carte dinner to control you intake so after checking in go right to guest services and reserve a few dinners. Don't miss the Lobster on the buffet (I think Friday night).
Beaches great and lots of fun.
