“GREAT TIME AT GRAN BAHIA PRINCIPE AMBAR”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

I went to Punta Cana for the 3rd time with my wife from Sept 16th to Sept 23rd. We will definitely be back next year. This time we stayed at the amazing Gran Bahia Principe Ambar. Everyone needs to experience a resort amazing like the Ambar.
A special thank you to Marco Pena the Resident Manager for taking care of all of our needs prior to arrival.

Ambar is a smaller section of the Gran Bahia Principe (over 18 only) which was the BEST ever.

Upon arrival, bell hop transported us to are villa which was very quick ride from the lobby where we were dropped off. We stayed at the Villa 60 which was between the lobby and beach and on the 3rd floor about 3 minute walk each way.

The room was very large and spacious it had a large bathroom-separate shower and Jacuzzi tub; stocked with toiletries; vanity mirror and robes with slippers and closet-safe, shelves, hangers, umbrella
,drawers-lined with Gran Bahia Principe logo

The refrigerator was stocked daily with water, pop, beer, and mini bottles of vodka, rum, and whiskey

The food in the main restaurant was great, A la carte restaurants-book them ASAP as they fill up fast, Breakfast/lunch/dinner is located next to the lobby and the members of staff working there were always very nice and friendly especially Gladys at the buffet restaurant that lady is a star. And 24hr room service that was excellent.

Entertainment at the Tropicana Theatre was great. Michael Jackson night was the best show well done to the crew for pulling that of. Also it was nice to have a walk around the resort at night you had a choice of walking or taking the trams up towards the other hotels at night for entertainment.

The beach was great the workers were excellent at keeping it tidy. If you can try and walk down towards the bottom of the beach there you will find a lovely beach market were you can bargain.

Tipping is at your own discretion but always appreciated. We did a lot of this because a lot of the staff work very hard just so that we can have a perfect stay. It’s nice to show them that your grateful.

We was as the night club every night after the show the DJ was very good. We did notice guests from the other areas of the resort trying to swim in the pool and were told to leave. That made us feel special that it's inclusive to Ambar guests only. And there is security that patrols the area at all-time as well.

A massive thank you to all the Ambar staff and Gladys at the buffet and Marco Pena the hotel Manager.

It's the perfect hotel if you want peace and quietness, because it's not accessable for under 18 years old. Altough the food could be much better, there' a lot of fat on the meat, and the potatoes aren't allways well cooked. For the a la carte restaurants, you better stay away from them. The plates are made earlier on the day, and you get almost nothing on it.

We stayed at the Principe Ambar from Sept. 23 to Sept 30, 2012. We abosutely loved it! In reading some other reviews people were concerned with the service. Service was the BEST service I have ever had, Unlike life in Canada or the United States, life in the Dominican Republic is a lot slower and laid back. Once a person gets used to this, they realize that the service is really quite good. Another thing that is important to do is to always tip. Try to tip everyone. For a lot of the rude people the workers endure, they do a very good job and are always happy. They help you when you ask for it, and even better when you tip! We always had WAY more than what we needed in our mini bar because we go to know our housekeepers, and treated them like anybody else, not our servants.

The food was fantastic. There was a lot to choose from. I would recommend the Gourmet restaurant in (I think) the Bavaro side. It was as good as the Don Pablo Gourmet. Best a la carte was the Japanese by far! I was never hungry there. There is always something wonderful to eat or drink.

The evening entertainment was fabulous, but in all the different places I have stayed in, this entertainment was by far the best. Although the bar closes at 11 pm, it didnt really matter because there is still something to do, and to be honest, I was usually exhausted from all the sun I had gotten each day.

The grounds and pool were beautiful, but be prepared to wake up at 7:30 am to put towels on your lounge chairs if you want a cabbana. Like every resort, people reserve their chairs with their towels, so a person to wake up early to do this is foolish as their is a ton of chairs.

There were a few kinks here and there but overall our stay was great. I would recommend it to anyone and I am looking forward to going back.

Room Tip: ambar has best rooms.

Let me start by saying that this was our first trip to an all inclusive so maybe our expectations were to high. We stayed at the ambar mid September which I guess is considered the "off season" so that might explain some of the issues we had.

The good: the resort was very clean including our room. The grounds are beautiful and very peaceful. Even though people are constantly working on the landscaping it was never loud or distracting from relaxing. The pool was beautiful and never any trouble to find chairs. The staff was very friendly everywhere we went.

The not so good: although the room was clean it was very plain, not at all what I would expect from a 5 star resort. The bed was like sleeping on concrete. Diner reservations are near impossible to get. We were given 2 reservations for the entire week, no choice of day or restaurant. The buffet was bland at best....not bad, just bland. You will constantly be approached by staff trying to get you to join their MVP club or what ever they call it, and they become very rude if you tell them no thanks. As far as the beach, although it is pretty if you are not out at 7:00 am you will not be able get a chair close enough to even see the water. After 6:00 pm the place turns into a retirement home. The pool bar closes at 5:30 and the pool closes at 6:00 so the only place to socialize is in the lobby...why would you not want to sit at the pool/beach if you are in paradise.

I could go on but really no need. To sum it up although it wasn't terrible it absolutely is not a top notch resort. We will go back to the DR but will defiantly find another place to stay.

My husband and I were booked at the Gran Bahia Principe Punta Cana. When we arrived we were told that we were getting an upgrade to the Ambar because they thought we would like it there and could have some time together as a couple. We were escorted to our room that was only one building back from the pool/ocean. The room was very large with a King sized, four poster bead, a separate sitting area, balcony, mini bar, bottled water, coffee maker, phone. The bathroom had both a rain head shower, and a jetted tub. The toilet area had a privacy door. We never saw housekeeping, but they managed to attend to the room twice a day, once for turn-down service. We joked that we had a bed that made itself by magic. We spent time at the Ambar pool and beach. We also used the onsite dive operator Scuba Quatic to do three dives. The dive shop was friendly, attentive, and eager to please. At the pool, we participated in water aerobics led by Juan - "sexy man number one" (his own nickname!) My husband called it a sobriety check, I called it hilarious! Juan was very, very entertaining and good with people. We had so much fun, we did it again the next day. The bartenders and servers were constantly meeting the needs of the many people hanging out here. Woody was especially entertaining. I see some people mention not liking the drinks- and I don't get it?? Why not just ask for exactly what you wanted? I would often order Brugal on the rocks and then I'd add a splash of soda from the open area. The drinks were not weak, and if they were you could just say glug, glug, glug, and they'd add more. I have also seen people complain about the Language barrier, and again, I'm baffled as to any complaint. I heard Spanish, English, Russian, French, and Portuguese spoken. Give me a break - how many Languages do Americans speak to those visiting our country? I understood and was understood very well. In addition, I can't believe I got 4 nights accommodations, plus all the food and drinks I wanted for what I would pay for maybe 2 meals in downtown Baltimore. The value simple can't be beat. Speaking of meals, we ate at the snack bar Ambar, the Buffet at Ambar, Le Gourmet A La Carte, and Bella Italia. All food was incredibly delicious. From snack bar to A La Carte dining, we had a minimum of four servers attending us. I usually do not write reviews, but I felt that often people complain for the sake of complaining, and it presents unrealistic doubts to future travelers. I have stayed at all inclusive's before. In some cases we were told specifically that tipping was not allowed. I mistakenly assumed that that was true everywhere. Sadly, my husband and I did not tip as often as we would have liked to. The service was excellent, despite the fact that we didn't tip. So - thank you guys. If we return, it will be armed with a little cash to go around.
