“Great family vacation, huge resort”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

We spent Christmas at Grand Bahia Principe Punta Cana. It was fantastic! Great for families and large groups. The resort is huge and plenty to do, including a Kids' Club. We have a 4 year old and 6 year old and they begged not to leave. We met some great folks from Canada and the staff was amazing. They did an amazing event and dinner on Christmas eve. The entire resort was well decorated and everyone was so festive. Some of the decorations were a bit over the top but I understand their intentions which were to wow the guests and give us a good time. The only downside was the size of the resort, which is perfect for groups and families but a little too busy for couples. I personally prefer a smaller resort and less restaurants but have a quieter, more peaceful environment. But on a sidenote, I understand from some of the resort employees that they are not treated really well and paid significally lower as compared to other employers, which was very disappointing to hear.

Room Tip: If you can upgrade to Esmeralda...nice restaurants and rooms.

The resort and staff were very accommondating and friendly. The pool bartenders went out of their way to meet our needs and make sure that we had fun. Suggest bringing bug spray but everything else was excellent

Let me start with the pros, the beach is beautiful, the pools are nice, the rooms were spacious enough.

The cons:

Service is way to relaxed to give this a four star rating. you have to ask for things 2 or 3 times.

Not enough chairs around the pools, not even close to acceptable. There is more than enough room for more chairs and a demand. Its really frustrating to go to the pool and can't find a seat. These are peoples vacations don't make them hunt and fight for chairs. At the beach it was easier to find chairs, but its busy there so go early.

The food is okay at best. The ala cart restaurants are a big waste of time, same food as the buffet, same quality, just takes way longer to eat. And unless you are making a reservation with kids you will be eating late (8:30, 9). At the Japanese restaurant they advertise it as a teppanyaki environment (cook at table show) but no one tells you that you have to make a specific reservation for that, Very very disappointing. Given the language barrier you have to be clear.

They have good brands of liquor available included and for charge, but you have to ask for it by name otherwise you get watered down nondescript bar rail hooch. This goes for all drinks ask for the good stuff.

Why they force people to the disco at 11:30 instead of keeping the lobby bar open is really confusing to me. not everyone that goes to these resorts is into going to the loud dance club. Some people (even young) want to sit in a comfortable environment past midnight and talk, play cards, what have you. No reason for this at all, and all Grand Bahias (in my experience) seem to do this???

Stupid note but still frustrating, you have to put a card in to turn on and off the lights in the room. But this also turns off all the electricity in the room, including the clock. So you will be constantly setting the time in your room. We found you can put any card that fits in to keep it going but every time staff comes in your room (which is often) they will pull it out. So you might win a few but...really a dumb after thought. Just put the A/C on the cut off circuit.

We got this trip for a very good sell off price, but if you are paying premium go somewhere else like a smaller resort or the Riu, I hear there is a Westin going in.

Room Tip: Its a huge resort so decide what you want to be closest to (beach, pool, lobby) before you book a ro...

Just returned from a week stay at this lovely resort. Stayed in one of the golden accommodations in building number two. We were given two rooms in the same building ,on the same floor for our family. Very happy as this was a last minute decision to go away. Booked Monday for a Friday departure.
Checking in went pretty smoothly.
Our rooms were clean and very well maintained through the week.
Had some tiny ants with a dish left in the room. Totally our fault. Some mosquitoes but this was known before going. Not a surprise and not the resort's fault.
Resort is huge and transportation with a shuttle is required if you have any mobility issues. Shuttles run three routes and quite regularly. Drivers are very friendly. Rooms along the shuttle routes may not be the best but we did not have them. Building 2 was a great location.
Lots of people. If you want a pool chair you really have to be up at 7 for a shaded choice. Take turns with that duty! Throw a towel on a chair. No one ever moves anyone's things. We were bad and took 4 chairs for three of us and gave 2 away to families with little children who would show up a little later and have no where to sit with them. That seemed to be a problem for young families.
Not sure about other peoples complaints about service. Bar staff, restaurant staff and others were all friendly, fun and helpful.
Visited the water park on a walk. We do not have little children but we sat to watch other's kids have a blast at this place. It is an awesome pool area for families with little ones.
Food was quite good. Not great. French restaurant was the best. For an all inclusive it was very respectable.
Have stayed at smaller, more expensive resorts that provide a little more luxury but we did not go with that expectation.
The only thing lacking was good evening entertainment. The evening shows were not worth attending. All inclusive resorts evening shows can not compete with cruise vacation entertainment.
For those who like karaoke and the younger disco club fun I think this resort provides that. We went to check it out and it appeared that people were having a blast.
Over all nice vacation location. Some great night photo opportunities for those with photography experience and cameras that take night pictures.

We read many reviews on tripadvisor before choosing our resort. We figured that the positive reviews for the Bahia Principe Punta Cana outweighed the negatives. We were wrong. We stayed from Jan. 10 to 17, and have never, in many years of traveling, had such poor service. This resort is not remotely five star, or four star... at least, not compared to Canadian standards.

If you must come here, stay in the Esmerelda section; our friends were there and their maid service was better. Also, if you must stay here, learn some Spanish. None of the staff we encounted, except in the Royal Golden lounge, spoke much English. I think it's good to learn some of the language that is spoken where you're traveling anyway, but here, you really need it.

This resort is HUGE; there are little shuttles taking you everywhere. The shuttles and handy and timely, but they leave them idling all the time and the exhaust fumes on the resort are mind-numbing. They have signs around the resort asking us not to litter (as if any respectable Canadian would) for the "ecological health" of the resort, then they leave trucks idling everywhere and don't appear to recycle anything.

I asked for a resort map at check-in, and was told they'd have more "tomorrow". When I went back the next day, they said they were out. Our friends in the Esmerelda section were given two! Thankfully they gave us one... it was definitely needed!

The food in all the restaurants was average at best; always overcooked, chewy meats and mushy vegetables, though the pastries are good. If you enjoy good Japanese food, don't bother with the a la carte Japanese place - terrible. We would've tried the steakhouse, but it was "sold out" the whole week.

If you like to sit on the beach or by the pool, set your alarm and wake up early to claim your chairs with a towel, otherwise you may not get any. This is especially true if you like the shade. A few times, we had to drag stray chairs together to a random spot in the middle of the pool deck. Unfortunately, we saw "claimed" chairs sit empty all day sometimes. People claim their chairs on the off-chance they may want to sit there, but often don't use them. A bolder person might just remove their towels/personal items and use the chairs, but I didn't want any confrontations with other guests. We went to a resort once which had a strict policy on this (the staff would remove any unattended towels) and it was much better.

The best part of this resort, if you have kids like we did, is the water park. It's the cleanest area of the resort, and the kids had a blast there. They could have better daily snacks there though... hot dogs and cheese sandwiches get old pretty fast. The staff there were not what I'd call "kid friendly" either, as they should be. In fact, we encountered no staff anywhere on the resort who I'd describe as naturally friendly.

The staff here are all what I call "tip-friendly"; you give a tip, they get friendly. If you're walking by staff members, you have to say hello to them first, otherwise they ignore you. The best service seems to go into the landscaping, which is lovely. And the maintenance/landscaping staff we spoke to were all nicer than the guest service and restaurant staff we encountered. The "Royal Golden" Concierge staff were condescending. The hotel shop staff totally ignored you, while the market kiosk staff hounded you to come see their treasures (which are ridiculously overpriced). The restaurant staff were robotic, and we only met one bellman who smiled (when we arrived). The staff in general must be terribly overworked and terribly underpaid; they're certainly not happy.

This place is trying to take extra money from your pockets any way they can. One of their techniques is to have two staff members walk around the resort with different "daily" animals - snake day, parrot day, monkey day, iguana day - and hound people to have their picture taken with the animals. When you agree to it, they put the animal on your shoulder or head or in your hands, snap the photo, then snatch the animal away and move onto the next person. Instead, they should tell you some things about the animal, be informative, let the kids pet them... nope, just making money. Ten bucks a picture! El rip-off!

The maids must be way understaffed; our room wasn't cleaned until very late (5-6pm) and on our last night it wasn't cleaned at all! At no point during our stay did we ever receive washcloths; the times I asked, I was told "tomorrow". Guess they're short on washcloths. The towels were often threadbare, and the sheets and pillowcases were too. The promised daily turndown service was delivered only once, though two other times they did knock on the door very late and woke us up!

On one day, we returned to our ground-floor room in the afternoon to find the patio door open. Someone could've just walked on in. When my husband complained, they "upgraded" us to "diamond" status, which gave us access to two more restaurants with the same blah food. The very next afternoon, we came back to our room to find the front door wide open. The maid was in the middle of cleaning our room, but had left the room to go get something, leaving the door open for anyone to stroll on in. My husband walked in, looked around, and thankfully found nothing missing. The maid returned a few minutes later to finish the room while we waited outside. We didn't want to say something to her about the door - perhaps it's not policy to lock the door when they leave the area. Besides she only spoke a few English words. We did say something to the Royal Golden Concierge, who simply called housekeeping in front of us and spoke with them, finishing by saying to us that it wouldn't happen again. But it just had happened again! Shameful security! Thankfully we figured out the in-room safe, which took some time. The last person's security code was still on it; it wasn't cleared.

I would not return to this resort, nor would I recommend it if you have four or five-star expectations. They will not be fulfilled here. I've never been so disappointed after dropping four grand.

Incidentally....below my review here, the resort may put their two cents in, saying that they really care about my feedback. Don't be fooled, they don't. You're in and out like sheep with money. It's disgusting. Go somewhere else.

Before I start, let me say that me and my wife are very frequent travelers and when we travel we are very flexible and not very picky. However, this is not what I expected from a 4-5 start hotel. Here are some examples:
1- three out of 5 days of our stay, the room was not cleaned until 5 pm and we had to call when we returned to our room to request for a cleaning
2- we did eat or drink outside the resort, despite this my wife came down with a real bad case of stomach bug or food poisoning on the 3rd day of our stay. This brings their hygiene practices under question.
3- There is wetland in the middle of the resort which is a nice environmental initiative. However, it is also breeding ground for mosquitoes...and I mean lots of them!
To conclude, I think this resort is so big and established that they have become indifferent, or they are more focused on servicing the privileged guests in Ambar section.

We've just got back from a 2 week stay in the grand bahia principe resort. The grounds, pools & beach are beautiful. The only thing that lets this resort down is the cleanliness & the staff. The staff are VERY rude they definatley have no people skills. When ordering drinks you have to ask about 5 times before they serve you, one of the waiters that was waiting on our table dropped a plate left the food on the floor & went off to serve other people & didn't bother to clear up the mess. The staff should learn to speak english they get angry with you if you don't understand them. The cleanliness of the room was poor, the sheets wasn't changed that often the maid never cleaned the bathroom the whole 2 weeks we were there. A complaint was made about the toilet seat but nothing was done about it. The food was ok not great but ok. The pool near the beach had to be closed for a day because someone had a poo in the pool, it took nearly 5 of their staff to do anything about it when a complaint was made. There were too many people letting their kids go in the pool without swim nappies on, i also noticed there were no lifeguards near any of the pools. I wouldn't recommend this resort at all I would recommend the grand bahia principe in Mexico. The hotel is suppose to be a 5 star hotel this is definately not a 5 star hotel we were not given 5 star treatment.
