Take this excursion if you want to see a good representation of the real D.R.. Learn about the island's history, agriculture, and rum and tobacco trade. Be entertained by knowledgable and an energetic guide and driver, (Nacho and Elvis). With the added benefit of knowing you made a contribution to the DR educational system.
The travel up the mountain was rough at times, with a lot of unpaved roads, but the scenery is beautiful and you get a real look at how Dominican life is like outside the resorts. Nacho was not only hilariously entertaining he was full of homeopathic health tips.
The itinerary included horseback riding, tour of a sugar cane plantation, rum making demonstration, cigar rolling demonstration, visit a typical Dominican family and residence, tour caves, and take part in a native Indian ritual. I got a lot of great pictures for this trip's photo book.
The excursion was a full day trip. Left the resort at 9:30am and returned around 5:00pm. This excursion satisfied my cultural curiosity and had plenty of fun along the way.

This is a must do tour. Sammy (tour guide) and Angel (Aide) were outstanding, funny, educational and informative at the same time. Everyone on this tour were amazed and commented that this was the best of all tours and some had done on avg two to three tours. This is a must do.

This is an absolute MUST DO if you are in Punta Cana!!

It has 16 zip lines over 12 platforms which include a 700m and 800m line over a river, a few hundred feet up!

It was amazing from start to finish, even though I was pretty nervous to begin with. They picked us up from our hotel on time and it took about 45min to get up the mountain to where the centre is. The drive up there is pretty hairy, but good fun.

We ended up coming back to our resort and recommending this is everyone we spoke to who are all now going on it too. When you finish they have fresh fruit, water, coke and sprite waiting for you.

You can choose to buy their photo of you for $10, but they don't stop you using your own camera/phone to take pictures of each other yourselves and they do not pressure you to buy anything which is a pleasant change from other places.

I cannot recommend this trip highly enough. If we ever return to Punta Cana this will be 1st on our to-do list.

This review is for the Bavaro Runners Punta Cana safari day trip. It is described in detail in the summary on this page.

My husband and I visited Punta Cana in mid July and decided on this day trip. We are so glad that we did! It's the perfect blend of culture, history, adventure, and sightseeing. We learned so much about the Dominican, its rich history and cultural heritage, and the various ways of life. From the chocolate and the coffee to the cigars and the sugar cane/rum, we had a great time sampling all of the different things that the Dominican offered. The fresh fruit was out of this world! Horseback riding through the fruit groves/plantations was really neat, as was the cave exploration. Neither required much by way of athleticism, but it was relaxing and exciting regardless.

It's not the most adrenaline pumping option for day trips, but based on the conversations that we had with other friends at our resort, we definitely made the right choice! No one pushed us to buy things (though we certainly did!) and nothing felt staged or hokey. The food and drinks were all very authentic. Plus, I love to take photos, and I had many opportunities to do that. We had heard on some trips that you cannot take photos (since some companies want you to purchase photos through them); however, everyone on every step of this tour was more than happy to take photos for us and with us!

Hands down, the best part of this trip was Franklin, our guide, and Martines, our driver. They have such great rapport with one another. We loved both of their personalities. As for Franklin, he was nonstop excellence. He was so knowledgeable about the history, the people, and the culture. Plus, he's so funny and kind. I am positive that this trip would be great with any guide, but we were beyond impressed with Franklin!

Some advice: wear comfortable shoes and lightweight/thin clothes. It gets warm at some of the stops, because there isn't always a strong breeze. Don't hesitate to back a bag. They do a great job of keeping things safe on the safari truck. We wore gym shoes and were glad we did. Don't be intimidated by the lunch buffet. It's pretty standard Dominican buffet food and we really liked it. It's not quite a resort-style lunch, but then we weren't expecting that. The views up the mountain are worth it alone! Plus there's great live music and even some dancing! Also, they keep coolers stocked in the safari truck - so there's always ice-cold water, soda, and even mixed drinks (Cuba Libres, anyone?!) in the "bar" on every stop of the trip. We were pretty amazed at what all was included in the price of this trip! This trip runs from morning to early evening.

Overall, you won't be sorry if you choose this day trip! It's a great peek into some of the history and heritage of the Dominican.
