“Can't wait to go back. Wonderful time.”
Reviewed September 11, 2010

My husband and I honeymooned at the resort for eight days in August. We wouldn't change a thing about our trip. It was perfect. We are planning to go back for a long weekend for our 1 year anniversary.

Resort: The resort and grounds were beautiful. It makes for wonderful pictures. The pool bar area was a lot of fun. This is where most everyone hung out during the day. The beach is small but nice. Most days we were able to get the beach/pool chairs that we wanted. The beach bungalows are the way to go but you have to get up early to snag one.

Food: The food was excellent. Our favorite restaurant was Capricio. Try the risotto. We had it two nights in a row. The Blue Marlin was a very close second for us and it is where we ate most often. The view is unreal there and the food was great. We also enjoyed the steakhouse, however, we did not care for The Wok and only ate there once.

Entertainment/Staff/Atmosphere: We were relieved to see that the resort did not draw a young, party crowd. Don't get me wrong. Everyone hung together and had a good time but it was the perfect balance of a good time w/a laid back vibe. We made some great friends that we plan to keep in touch with. The entertainment staff does a superb job. They work really hard and played a key role in the fun we had while we were there. Willy Wonka was our favorite staff member. He was a lot of fun and did a great job of keeping you involved in the activiities that were scheduled through out the day. We also loved Miami, Gabrielle, Junior and Mildred. They were a blast too.

Accomodations: We stayed in the fortress in one of the honeymoon suites w/private pool. If you can swing the price, it seems the way to go. It was clean and nicely decorated. The balcony was big and had nice furniture. The private pool was a really neat added touch. I will say though that we didn't spend as much time on our balcony as I thought we would because most everything revolves around the pool bar during the day.

Advice: There is a slight language barrier as the staff speaks varing degrees of english. We did not run into any issues, however if you have food allergies or typically request 'made to order' meals, you will have some difficulty. Take insect repellant for the mosquitos. I got bit up at night when walking around the resort. We spoke to a few couples who stayed in the private bungalow villas: The bathroom does not have a window, just blinds. This means you can not keep anything of value in the bathroom and you have to keep the bathroom door shut and locked at all times. They also commented on the number of bugs that came into the bathroom due to the open-air window. Finally, keep in mind that Secrets has not been running the resort for very long so you may see some small inconsistancies. For example, we ordered dessert one night to our room and it never came. However, you can tell that they are trying very hard to do everything right and are eager to correct any mistake. We had an amazing time and look forward to going back.

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful 7-day stay at Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana to celebrate our Anniversary. Overall, the resort is “Muy Excelente”!

The grounds of the resort are very beautiful, exceeding my expectations. Although we encountered some small issues, none really affected our overall positive impression of the resort.

Positive Attributes:

The food and restaurant service were excellent. The hostesses and wait staff were exceedingly friendly and we never had any issues with communication as reported by others in their reviews. Our favorite restaurants were the Blue Marlin, Wok and The Steak House. The pool side BBQ grill near the Café was outstanding.

Management (Pedro) attended to our every need courteously and promptly, the maintenance staff was outstanding along with the entertainment staff (Miami, Willy Wonka and Richard aka “Michael Jackson” who made an effort to visit with us every day).

Our room was great. The A/C worked very well and we always had hot water. We booked a Junior Ocean view Suite; we had a terrific view of the ocean from our room on the first floor with a walkout to the beach.

The resort is very picturesque. Our favorite location was the main pool area along with the love bar. The resort pools and beach are very nice. Juanillo beach is very scenic; this is where we did the horseback ride excursion.

The negatives:

At times the lobby was warm due to a lack of A/C, a cool breeze every now and then would cool it down a bit.

Mosquitoes were a small problem at times in the evening but we brought repellent with us. So it would be wise to bring some.

Overall, I would highly recommend this resort. Sure, there were some issues but they were minor and no different than those we encountered at the other resorts we have visited. If you visit this resort, you will not be disappointed. We plan to return to the resort as often as possible, we liked it that well!

We spent 6 wonderful days at Cap Cana Sanctuary. We were greeted with an ice cold beer, which I requested as well as the "drink of the day" . This was our first impression and what a great greeting. The lobby is truly spectacular. Open air, exactly what you should expect when you arrive on a tropical island.

At the reception desk my wife and I we were met by Pedro Burgos. I advised him that I wanted a room with its personal swimming pool. Unfortunately these rooms were under construction. Pedro went out of his way and immediately ensured that we had a room that I was just as happy with. We were given the opportunity to choose a room that he had available. We chose to stay in the fortaleza. Pedro insisted we leave our watches and cell phones stored away, and so we did. He guaranteed we would be in paradise.

Our room was great it opened up to a true ocean view, and what a view. It even had a patio, and a small wooden bridge which lead to a spectacular view. We heard stories of issues affecting the air conditioning while traveling in the carribean. Fortunately we did not have a problem with our air conditioning. We even turned the fan down upon returning to the room, it was cold.

Room service is available 24 hours a day. No request will be turned down. You simply have to ask. We had our laundry done and it was returned professionally cleaned.

Now please understand that this a Sanctuary and not CANCUN. This resort is geared for mature adults, honeymooners, anniversary or just simply couples getting away from the hustle and bustle. No children allowed.

This resort is private. It is as secure as fort knox. Outsiders are not allowed on the property. You can not be hassled by the natives selling jewelry or stale cigars. This resort can only be reached via automobile, and you must clear several security points before entering the property.

We had the opportunity to visit the restaurants located within the resort. Every morning we had breakfast at Casa Bella. You have a choice of outside seating al fresco or an air conditioned table. Breakfast is made to order as well as buffet. The fruit is fresh and the deserts were just as good. Five star breakfast daily, whats to complain about. Breakfast is served all morning 7am til 11:30 so sleep late if you want to!!!

Lunch was also served at Casa Bella, and boy was the fish fresh. You also have a grill which serves burgers, chicken, fish whatever you desire. The Blue Marlin also served lunch, shrimp were to die for. The Blue Marlin has a bar and a nice menu. Here you dine overlooking the ocean in the open air.

Now for the fun part. This resort has a salt water pool, two to be exact. One is an endless pool with a view of the resort as well as the ocean. You also have a pool which has a pool bar. Here you can have the drink of the day as well as draft and bottled beer. We were not much of drinkers, but were satisfied with the simple variety. Remember this is a sanctuary style resort, and not Cancun. We did not want to see individuals intoxicated, screaming and carrying on like 18 year olds on spring break.

Could they improve on the alcohol variety, yes. But we are not heavy drinlers, we were looking for peace and quiet. The pool bar closes early, 6:45pm.

The beach is definitely not a ten. You have to enter the beach (ocean) with caution. Small rocks adorn the shore. We entered the beach from the end which was a sandy patch with no rocks. Once you cleared the shore line it was crystal clear blue, tranquil, warm water. Every morning we had our own spot on the beach, there are cabanas which offer a shade from the warm sun. Take your pick sun or shade.

Entertainment is great. Volleyball, spanish classes, bingo what ever your heart desires. And based on our intentions we wanted to do as much of nothing as possible. Hats off to Miami and Willy Wonka. They ensured the guests enjoyed the activities the resort had to offer. Visit the concierge for tours, spa treatments, golf, transportation (rental cars on site in minutes)

Night life, well again we were not the balls of fire we are back home. There is a casino, a Love bar which featured shows as well as drinks. We attended a magic show and participated in a couples game.

Dinner choices were good. You have the Blue Marlin specializing in sea food, Capriccio the Italian specialty, the Steak House and the Wok for sushi and hibachi. If you did not see what you wanted on the menu simply ask and the chef will accomodate you. Dinner is served at the Capriccio til midnight. Reservations are recomended here as well as the WOK. The dress code is casual / elegant. It is such a beautiful resort that we dressed up every evening in order to fully experience the night ambiance.

The employees ensured our stay was nothing short of spectacular. We were greeted everywhere we went. They provided us with drinks, meals, bottled water imagine you can request breakfast, lunch or dinner any where on the property. Ask and you will be satisfied.

Will we return? Yes in a heart beat!!!!

We were able to remember some of the employees and we are sorry if we missed some. Our hats off to you for your generosity and attention to our needs. Without your presence and preserverance our stay would not of had been so impressionable.

I really cant express how much my husband and I enjoyed this vacation. It was my husbands 40th birthday and Carlos and all of the employees at Secrets went ABOVE AND BEYOND their job to make sure that our stay was unforgetable. From the staff at check in to the waiters, hostesses, cooks, bartenders, activity dept., to the people behind the scenes that we never saw who worked so hard to make our stay unbelievable I want to say Thank You. This place is AMAZING.. They take such pride in trying to please you. I can't wait to go back.

When we first arrived we were kind of nervous because we didn't really see that many guests. Our check in was quick and we got our drinks and cold towels. We had a few minor issues getting the honeymoon perks but had it all straightened out by the second day no big deal. They had fun banners they put on everyones door for honeymoon and anniversaries. We did the breakfast in bed which is really the same as the room service. And we got a free bottle of champagne which was fun to drink before dinner. We didnt get the dinner on the beach which worked out for the best because the misquittos seem to be immuned to bug spray and all the food at the resturants was really good anyway. All out door resturants provided bug spray also. We ate at all the resturants and loved them all. My least favorite was the dominican theme night which happened to be my husbands favorite. So it all depends on your food interests. Breakfast is only a buffett which kind of gets old but its still good. Make sure you plan out your dinners so you can hit each resturant they are not all open every night. And make reservations for the hibatchi table at the wok yum yum!
Room:
We had a beach front room that we liked and didn't even bother to try and upgrade. Our room did smell kind of funny the first few days but I brought candles which helped immediately. And I wouldnt say it was a mold smell because other places smelled like it too. I think it might be some cleaning product but I dont know. Our room only got hot one night which was random but it cooled back down. Some of the places in the hotel are not air conditioned and it is hot but you are the beach suck it up! Sometimes turn down service comes early and its kind of awkward getting ready with them turning down the room. haha o well at least they are doing it. And each night we got a paper with all the events and drinks for the next day.
Entertainment:
everyday we tried the drink of the day cocolocos my fav. and we did the spanish lessons and water aerobics. Miami fixed the water trampolin for us one day and we all jumped on that. At night Richard and miami got us all to try new dances and we got involved with all the games. They also have a different show each night we went to all of them. Make sure you play the true love game or atleast watch its sooo funny. The entertainment guys are truely funny and great people.

We met about 13 other honeymoon and anniversary couples and had a blast hanging out with them and all eatinng dinners together. I truely think the people you meet help make it that much more fun of a vaca. It got busier towards the end of our trip and service did slow down a bit with meals and drinks. What made us nervous at first not seeing other people ended up being our favorite thing. We got used to knowing everyone and getting all the attention we hated when our honeymoon friends left and new people came hehe.

The entertainment guys speak the most english. The waiters speak a good amount but we tried not to be too picky about changing our orders or adding extra stuff. I only had one mix up with cheese on a club sandwhich and it was good without the cheese anyway. Remember you are not in an english speaking country and they really do the best they can. My husband and I have made a pact to learn/relearn spanish.

The cap cana area is really quiet and dead this time of year. We did 2 excursions which got us out of the area where we could do some shopping and see more resorts and areas of punta cana. Buggys were great to the blue hole and so was the booze cruise on tropical storm!!

Over all it was a great honeymoon!!

My husband and I honeymooned at the Secrets Sanctuary Cap Can in mid August. We both live and work in Punta Cana and are very familiar with the hotels in the area. With that said this hotel is by far our new favorite. We spent the first half of our honeymoon at the Iberostar Grand and both agreed that the Sanctuary is in a completely different league. Here are our thoughts:

Check-in: We arrived around 1pm and our room was not ready. We were told that we had received a 3 category room upgrade and it would be worth the wait until check-in time at 3pm. We went to eat and returned at 3pm. Our room wasn't actually ready until 3:30, but there was cool towels and water in the lobby and it was worth the wait. It would have been nice if the reception staff gave us some info about the resort as we waited, but we ended up exploring and figuring everything out ourselves.

Room: We stayed in a Honeymoon suite with private plunge pool in the fortress (room 3045). The room was very spacious with a large sitting/dining area separate from the sleeping area. Both the sitting area and the bedroom had sliding doors leading out to the huge balcony. The balcony had an amazing view of the sea and a nice set up of chairs in the shade, lounge chairs in the sun and the pool area. The bathroom and closet were very spacious, as well. Our only problem with the room is that there was no hot water the first 2 days we were there. On our second day we reported this to Mabel at the front desk who seemed shocked that such a thing could happen (I read the reviews beforehand and knew that this was nothing new at this resort). She promised to send someone right away. We checked a few times throughout the day, but didn't see any change. We didn't know if someone had actually been out to check it or if they just couldn't fix it, so we headed to the concierge desk that evening. We spoke with Kary who was nice enough to tell us the truth...that it was a general problem and they were working on it. We would have appreciated the truth from the beginning so that we didn't keep checking on something that wasn't actually going to be fixed "right away". That night around midnight there was a knock on the door by someone leaving a typed message saying that there would not be water service for a few hours in the middle of the night while they fixed the hot water issue. We were fast asleep at that time and did not appreciate being woken up when they could have just slid the paper under the door, but in the morning the hot water was back. This was no big deal, but for the price there should be consistent hot water and the hotel should take noteof a few service blunders. DON'T let these minor issues stop you from booking the resort.

Food & Drink: EXCELLENT! Best all-inclusive food we have ever had. Swing by the concierge desk when you arrive and make a reservation for the Hibachi table at the Asian restaurant. Its included and a fun night of dining. Make sure to try the tempura ice cream...yum! The Blue Marlin is the best option for lunch and the steakhouse is excellent for dinner. The room service menu was slightly disappointing, but the service was quick and accurate. The drinks were good, especially at the Love Bar in the lobby. The service was excellent at all of the restaurants and bars, except for the pool bar where they bartenders and wait staff seemed to be more interested in talking to each other than actually getting the drinks to the people who ordered them. We started tipping from the moment we sat down, so this did surprise me.

Entertainment- Miami and friends do a great job. They aren't too pushy, but love to get lots of people involved. My husband played a few games with them and they remembered him every time they saw him.

Pools: Fantastic! There are always chairs by the pool and the pool has enough room for people who want to be more active and those who want to relax.

Beach: Gorgeous! Not a huge beach, but plenty of space. You can always find a bali bed and beach chair.

Grounds: Very unique. We loved looking at all of the different architecture and enjoyed the colonial feel. There are a million different photo ops. Every time you leave your room you'll find another special spot. There are secluded beaches on both sides rather than long lines of resorts, so it feels like your in a small secluded colonial village. Very calm and relaxing environment.

Overall: The best kept secret (for now) in the area. Book it now before the price goes way up. It is a real luxurious get-away and not your typical all-inclusive environment.

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful 8-day stay at Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana to celebrate our Anniversary. Overall, the resort is on par with other Secrets resorts we have visited in the past (Maroma, Capri and Silversands) including Excellence Punta Cana when it was managed by Secrets.

The grounds of the resort are simply beautiful, exceeding those of the resorts mentioned above. Although we encountered some issues, none really affected our overall positive impression of the resort.

The positives:

The food and restaurant service were excellent. The hostesses and wait staff were exceedingly friendly and we never had any issues with communication as reported by others in their reviews. Our favorite restaurants were the Wok and Capriccio, although all were good.

Management attended to our every need courteously and promptly, and the entertainment staff was outstanding (kudos to Miami, Willy Wonka and Gabriel who made an effort to greet us every day).

Our room was perfect. A/C worked great and we always had hot water. We booked an Junior Oceanview Suite with the intentions of upgrading upon arrival, but after going to the room and seeing the terrific view of the pool and ocean from our balcony, we decided to stay in this category.

The resort is very picturesque. Our favorite location, and what seemed like a hidden gem, was the ocean club pool located on the third level of the Fortress. With great views of the ocean and the seclusion (we were the only ones there the few times we visited), it was our favorite romantic spot.

The resort pool and beach are very nice. Juanillo beach is very pretty but we were disappointed that much of the beach was not conducive to swimming due to seaweed and rocks. Plus, we like to walk the beach and based on previous reviews we thought it was longer then it actually is, which is only a mile.

The negatives:

The lobby was uncomfortably warm due to a lack of A/C. We heard from management that they are exploring plans to fix this.

Mosquitoes were an issue only when eating outdoors and there is not an ocean breeze. Had to use the repellent twice for dinner mainly because the fans weren’t being used at the Blue Marlin restaurant. So it would be wise to bring some, we did.

Pool bar drinks were way watered down. We just requested shots on the side and added them to our drinks. No big deal. The Love bar drinks were always fine.

Housekeeping and turndown service was not very good. It took a few days, and talking to management (thanks Carlos), before they were consistently replacing towels. One day they took the cushions from our balcony chairs without explanation. We assume they were to be cleaned but after they didn’t come back the next day we complained and they were returned right away. After missing turndown service the first night we twice requested they provide the service between the hours of 7-9PM. Only twice did they come at that time, and at the end of our trip. My wife and I always joked about what time they would come.

Overall, I would highly recommend this resort. Sure, there were some issues but they were minor and no different then those we encountered at the other resorts we have visited. If you visit this resort, you will not be disappointed.
