“Sanctuary from the Everyday!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2013

If you are looking for a place to get away from it all in a serene location to relax, this is your place. The resort is architecturally decked out with beautiful open areas to enjoy breakfast and lunch on the open balcony over looking the pool, beach, and ocean. You can choose to chill out and dine at the Blue Marlin situated directly over the blue water with the constant calming sea breeze. It's a place to chill with a book or a drink or with just someone you love, or all of the above. The service is of great standards, everyone there serves with a smile. The food is average but again it's typical of any resort in the region. The only drawback from being in the Cap Cana instead of Punta Cana area where most of the resorts reside is that it makes it a long day for excursions due to the many pickup stops from one resort to the other. It is not a big deal if you are more into a resort that is serene in it's surroundings and offers a quite and relaxing atmosphere.

Overall - our 20th anniversary trip was everything we hoped for with lots of great memories and photos. We recommend this resort to those couples looking for some relaxation time together to share in their romance that is just starting or prolonged.

Room Tip: This resort has room options for just about anyone with different preferences, I recommend calling t...

Pros:
- The resort is absolutely beautiful and the grounds are kept in immaculate condition.

- The staff are very friendly and eager to please.

- Lots of options for pools. The main pool has a swim up bar and is very social. The other pools are quieter and more peaceful. On their website, they refer to a salt water pool. This pool is only available if you have a room with a swim up pool in the fortress.

- Dominican Night! One night a week they have a Dominican buffet. Do not miss this... the food is great!

- The spa is really nice. Good service, great facilities, a bit pricey, though.

Cons:
- As with all of the Dominican Republic, Spanish is the primary language of the staff. Pretty much all of the staff speaks some English, but to varying degrees. If you are easily frustrated by language barriers, the Dominican Republic is not for you.

- The food is not good. This is pretty normal for any all inclusive -- you can eat all you want, but you won't want to eat it all.

- While there are a number of restaurants, they are not always open. Besides room service, which is available 24 hrs a day, but with a pretty small menu, there is one restaurant open for breakfast (the same every day), 2 for lunch (the same every day), and 3-4 for dinner (these change nightly, so plan accordingly).

- Tipping! Unlike some other all inclusives (Sandals, for example), tipping is not included. Even if you have all-inclusive (which we did), you will get a zero balance bill with every food or beverage order. You then have the option to tip. Some people also choose to tip in cash instead (both US or Dominican Pesos). We didn't tip at every meal, but rather for when we had particularly good service.

- House Keeping. They come at random times, so it's hard to predict. They also don't always give you everything you need (for a couple of days, they didn't bring hand towels or washcloths). They do mop the floor every day, which is great.

What to eat:
- Wok - This was my wife's favorite of the choices. The sushi was decent, and the tepanyaki was fun and pretty tasty.
- Steakhouse - I had both the filet and the skirt steak. The filet left something to be desired, but I really liked the skirt steak. They cook more than you request, so order accordingly (Rare will be more like medium rare, etc.).
- Cappricios -- Italian place. The pizza is fair. I liked it, my wife didn't.

Tips:
- They sometimes have beer in cans, if you prefer that to a draft beer in a plastic cup. You have to ask specifically for a can, but they're happy to provide.
- There is no need to get Dominican Pesos. We saw a lot of people waiting in line at the airport to change money. Don't bother. Cabs take US dollars, as do most places that cater to tourists.
- Do not pay for the resort (or anyone else's) pre-arranged shuttle from the airport. Cabs from the airport to the resort are USD $30 (make sure you agree to this before you get into the cab). That's total, not per person.
- Bring a LOT of sunscreen. The Caribbean sun is brutal. The shop at the resort charges $24 per bottle of sun screen, so it's MUCH cheaper just to pack a whole bunch.
- The beach at the resort is kind of small, but nice. If you want a REALLY nice beach, walk north, past the fortress (with the Spa and Wok). Just past there, is a very, very long beach. It's not part of the resort, but it's truly beautiful. Definitely worth the very short walk.

Room Tip: You do not want a room in the lobby area. At night it can get noisy with the bar right there. If p...

Beach was beautiful / food and wine horrible. We expected this hotel to be amazing, but it was far from that. We pretty much starved this whole trip. And we were not the only ones complaining about the food! Hotel was almost like a ghost town! Very quite at night not much to do but sleep!

This was my first trip to the Dominican and first all inclusive resort that we have stayed at. Let me start off by saying I will never go any other way!! It was so nice to not have to worry about a big bill at the end of our stay. My husband and I booked this four night trip through Groupon and went for a 40th birthday celebration with another couple. We stayed in a junior suite on the first floor - the 'ocean view' was questionable but we really didn't mind since we weren't planning on spending much time in the room. Plus, we've stayed at other places with ocean views so we were fine with it. Although, after some water "issues," we did end up moving to the second floor and the view was much better! I would definitely recommend either an upper level ocean view or a beach front room/villa. We did meet some people who had a swim up room in the castle area and it was really nice - maybe next time! The castle area seemed very secluded and private so if you want quiet, that would be the place to stay.

The resort overall was gorgeous and very secluded. It was a quick ride from the airport. We loved all of the buildings and the "old world" feel it had. It was small in comparison to other resorts so we could walk everywhere. I felt very safe and relaxed the whole time. The one thing I wasn't too happy about were the vendors who set up tables Friday and Saturday while we were there. You couldn't walk by without them harassing you to buy something..I do wish there was a table with someone braiding hair - that's the one thing I would have paid money for that was not available. I could have done without the bracelets and dollar store trinkets.

The staff was amazing!!! My friend and I did water aerobics with Rocky Balboa every morning - "welcome to the club..." and really enjoyed dance lessons with Teddy Bear "ah professionale!!" The rum and cigar tasting with them (and Minor!) was a really great time! Be sure to find Carlos, Junior, and Fast Eddie at the pool bar - great service and personalities too. Luis Miguel is the guy for CocoLocos - "shakey, shakey baby!!" Find him in the Ocean Club or Blue Marlin Bar - don't waste time getting a CocoLoco from anyone else!! We also received great service from Orlando at the Blue Marlin - he was always so happy and helpful. Jackie Chan at the Wok hibachi was really good too - he let my husband cook at the grill which was a big thrill for him.

The ocean was so gorgeous - we swam in it at least once a day. Try exfoliating with the wet sand..it really is amazing. And no, that guy out there is NOT bathing in the ocean - he's exfoliating with the sand from the bottom! The pools were all nice - the main pool was where all the action was..swim up bar, music, activities..we did stumble upon the pool at the Ocean Club one night and that looked very nice. It had a great view of the castle and the ocean.

Don't forget your sunscreen and aloe - the sun is strong and we saw lots of sunburns! I also recommend packing some bug spray - you may encounter a mosquito and you definitely don't want that to be buzzing around you all day..

What a fun trip - I have recommended this resort to several friends and family members. Can't wait to plan another trip soon!

Amazing! Starting with Claudia Jiminez in reservations. I called directly myself and got the best rate and accommodations. The most pleasant staff from rooms to restaurants to beach attendants. I have traveled all over the world and the layout of this hotel is beautiful. The all inclusive included everything you wanted, even champagne. Manager Hector was always available, which is rare. What an amazing trip! This is a must!!!

Definitely going again.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but beachfront villas are breathtaking.

I recently went to Dominican Republic and our group stayed in Punta Canta. We were unaware of this place. We ventured out to a restaurant called Blue Marlin at this resort that I heard of through Trip Advisor. We pulled up and were utterly amazed by this place! I don't know much about the experience staying here, but we wished we had stayed here. It was very well kept, very beautiful, and 5 star quality all around. Blue Marlin ended up being closed for dinner, but we at a buffet at Casa Bella, which was very very pricey, but good. The whole resort had a fun Italian/Mediterranean feel to it. The pool was huge and very nice. It looked over the ocean. There is a bar where you can eat and watch sports on a big screen. There are several different restaurants, shops, etc. This place looked absolutely amazing!! My only complaint was the restaurant staff didn't really understand English well so getting good service was tricky at times. But if I were going back I would definitely stay here!! Also, one more note. I will say that this area seemed the nicest, safest, and most up-scale that I saw. Do be prepared to spend some major dough though.
