Great trip with the family! The staff was wonderful. I don't think I hardly walked by someone without getting a smile and a hello. Thought we had a little trouble getting our 2 rooms connected but they let us mess up a different room with our 3 year old and 1 year old until the rooms we would actually be staying in were ready. The food everywhere you went was great. Every staff member was good with the kids. Joking, talking hi-fiveing. All great especially the entertainment director, Teddy Bear (Daniel). Maner was a lot of fun also. The waitress and waiters at every restaurant were polite and did a great job. The only thing I found wrong was the one cd with the same songs played over and over at the pool the entire week. Not sure why they don't mix it up a little. I could keep going but I will just say everything was EXCELLENT.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Sanctuary in the easter 2013, on a impulsive trip. The Sanctuary is a very nice, and tranquil place to stay. The service was very good, both at the reception, the restaurants, the beach and the cleaningservice. We upgraded to a privatepool suite, during the stay, and this was quickly cleaned and ready for us. The area of Cap Cana is also very calming and nice...

...you can see a lot of great pictures and read a lot more about Cap Cana, Sanctuary and Dominican Republic at our travelblog; www.travellersplanet.wordpress.com

We would never hesitate to recommend Sanctuary to others looking for a calming place to stay, with great food, great service and a stunning view!!!

Best Regards for Denmark

Room Tip: Go for the rooms in the top of the castle - SO nice!

My wife and I spent 5 days in early May to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had prearranged travel to and from the resort with Conexion Tour and Travel Punta Cana, which went flawlessly. Driver was waiting at the airport, with a sign with our name on it, and conversely upon our departure from our hotel. No wait times, and we were the only passengers in the van, which meant no stops. Only about 15 minutes from the airport.
We have been to all-inclusives before so we did have some reference point as to what to expect. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. There are several pools, with one main pool by the beach, where all the action during the day takes place. The beach has beautiful water, but is mildly rocky. Not a lot of action took place at the beach-- just people wading out into the water to cool off.
We were upgraded to a villa from a junior suite. The villa was large, but somewhat dated. We had a partial ocean view. The main complaints would be nonfunctioning electric outlets and no insulation in the walls, as we could clearly hear the neighbors next door (and I am sure, they could clearly hear us). In addition, the bathroom windows had screens only-- no secure locking window of any type. We felt slightly 'exposed' and were sure to always our valuables in our safe.
We found the restaurants actually quite good. The steakhouse exceeded expectations. The Blue Marlin is right on the water, with beautiful views and average lunch food. Be forewarned, a reservation is required for the Japanese hibachi. Food is available without a reservation, just not hibachi. We actually ate there twice, and found the non hibachi food (sushi, etc.) more enjoyable. The hibachi portion does not measure up to what an American would typically be used to at a mainland Japanese hibachi. There is a buffet available for breakfast and lunch, that is quick and convenient. It has a large variety of foods and was generally good. We found the Italian restaurant quite dark, and found many people struggled to see the menu. The food was generally pretty good.
Now the real reason to go to Sanctuary: the service. We were very impressed with the pleasant staff at all levels. There is a minor language barrier, and it is on our end. Their language is Spanish, and we spoke some, but need to improve for next time. I have never enjoyed tipping more than at this hotel, because the staff really deserved it. A special thanks to a few staff we met: Junior, who served us drinks on the beach and pool area, and really worked hard to make sure everybody had the drink they wanted. He was really pleasant. Juan, a server at the steakhouse was awesome. Eddy, and the entertainment crew, worked quite hard to include guests in activities during the day. These included such things as dance lessons, volleyball, rum tasting and water aerobics.
The general vibe of the resort is 'couples friendly'. This is definitely not the place for singles or partiers. The evenings are quiet and guests tend to retire to their rooms after dinner. One suggestion might be to add more entertainment options or a 'show' as we have experienced and enjoyed at other resorts. That said, we would definitely recommend The Sanctuary at Cap Cana for vacationers who want to feel spoiled and relaxed.

Room Tip: We booked a junior suite, but were upgrade to a villa. Rooms are somewhat outdated. We could hear...

We stayed at Sanctuary for 3 nights the second week of May in a honeymoon suite with plunge pool. It is located in the castle (newest part of the resort). The room was gorgeous, very clean and had a phenomenal view. The minibar only has water, soda and beer, but the Ocean Bar is located close by so we could take mixed drinks back to enjoy in our private plunge pool.

The resort grounds are beautiful and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. We did not have any problems with language barriers – most of the staff speaks English. There are at least 5 pools throughout the resort, the majority were empty most days – you can always find a private spot. People congregate around the main pool/bar and beach area. The drink service in this area was always great. We chose to tip although no one ever acted as if they expected it and if you do not want to carry cash you can leave a tip on your room account when you sign for the drink/food.

The beach is small, but nice and the water was very calm during our stay – unlike the northern part of the island which always has a lot of waves. There aren’t any water sports available, but you can walk almost 100’ out and still touch and the water is a gorgeous turquoise color.

We found taking a taxi to be the easiest way to and from the airport/resort. It costs $30 plus tip each way. Just follow the taxi signs at the airport to the stand and tell them Sanctuary Cap Cana.

We experienced a few minor inconveniences that I’ll mention so people are aware, but we thoroughly enjoyed our trip and are planning to bring friends back this winter.

The Ocean Bar has a few food items on their menu, which is convenient if you are staying in the castle. We ordered chicken caesar salads and were then told we had to eat with our hands because they don’t have any silverware at the bar.

The one open gift shop does not sell any aspirin, sunscreen, aloe, etc. Luckily the concierge had a few band-aids in a drawer that she shared with us. If you don’t plan to leave the resort, make sure you pack everything you could possibly need.

Staying on the 3rd Floor of the castle, the hot water took almost 5 minutes to get warm, but there appeared to only be a few other people staying in the building so I'm sure there wasn't enough useage to keep the hot water circulating.

Room service options for lunch/dinner are pretty limited and generally took an hour.

The wine selection is not great and the food is hit or miss, but really both were what I expected of an all-inclusive. If you don’t like it, order something else – it’s all inclusive. Some things we particularly enjoyed: conch chowder, bang bang shrimp salad, omelets, grilled lobster, quesadillas, tres leches cake and coco loco drinks specifically from the Ocean Bar.

We had massages at the spa and enjoyed them although the Swedish massage was what I’d consider a deep tissue massage – I found myself grimacing a few times. Be clear on what you are expecting. Also the outdoor pool part of the therapeutic water circuit didn’t appear to be working, but as we were getting ready to leave some of the high pressure jets randomly came on.

Room Tip: Rooms in the castle are the newest and nicest.

My husband and I went for a late honeymoon/1year Anniversary April 23-28. And from the moment we arrived we were treated like royalty. The food was high quality as well as the drinks and staff has thee best customer service. We did have a slight room problem but were upgraded by the manager right away. All I can say is I am planning a trip back next month already.

Just returned from 5 nights in ocean view junior suite. Trip was not without issues, we were relocated due to construction noise, we had to report a malfunctioning toilet, but both issues were addressed and resolved. We have travelled to several all inclusive properties throughout Mexico & the Caribbean and usually the food/restaurants are the weakest aspect of the trip. This was not the case at Sanctuary Cap Cana. We ate at Blue Marlin each day for lunch and the tables over the water at the railing offer the type of experience that makes you want to never leave. Shout out to Bernando! The only mediocre meal we had was the hibachi table, the food excepting the shrimp was overcooked and pretty bland and compared to Japanese restaurants in the US, it was a poorly executed experience with an untrained hibachi chef. The Steakhouse truly exceeded our expectations by serving my filet both tender and hot and cooked rare. Capriccio's Italian was competently prepared, but I did laugh when my greeting of "Buono Sera" was met with a blank stare of uncomprehension. We spent everyday at the "party pool". Shout out to Eddy! The entertainment group works hard to create fun. Shout out to Teddy Bear! Keep smiling!

I normally do not write reviews, but the staff and service at The Sanctuary Cap Cana deserve recognition. We were there for five nights, May 1 - 6, our first time and were extremely impressed. We had read numerous reviews and would have to agree that the staff and service make this a resort to put on your list to visit. First, we were greeted at the entrance with a hearty "Welcome Home" by Saul, one of the many great bellman. Next, the gracious and beautiful Selenia greeted us at check-in and when she informed us of our room number with a special smile and said that it was very nice room, she did not exagerate. The resort is very good at recogizing special occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and I won't spoil the surprise by going into details, but suffice it to say, that there were a lot of "wows" upon entering our room. Special kudos go to the concierge, Yissel, who took it upon herself to help fix my husband's sunglasses by taking them home with her and to a local eyeglass store! She went way above and beyond the call of duty! Also, Justo, another bellman, who always asked how we were doing and the answer was always an honest "Excellente!!"

Now to food and beverage -- overall, it was very good. We found our favorite restaurant was the Blue Marlin, definitely made better by our first visit at lunch with Robert and Naurys as our waiters. They were so engaging and fun that it set the tone for the rest of our meals. And then we met William, who rounded out a perfect trio of servers. Definitely try the Seafood buffett night - awesome lobster, sushi, coconut fish and too many other great dishes to name. We also ate at The Steakhouse and The Wok but did not try Capriccio's since the menu did not appeal to us. However, another couple we met enjoyed that restaurant also. The breakfast buffett was awesome and more than enough food to satisfy any appetite.

Although we did not partake in any of the poolside activities, it was obvious that the activities directors were very excited about their jobs and having a great time -- as were the guests involved. We spent our free time, when not golfing, by the beach being taken care of by Marta. What a great smile and so much fun -- hola to Marta from Ricardo y Josephina!

If you are a golfer, a round at Punta Espada is a must. Although the price tag is high, it is well worth the views and challenge! Benny was our caddie and a great coach, although I never could seem to master the greens which were fast, fast, fast! We also played La Cana, very nice and our caddie there, James, was a lot of fun. We added one more round at the Barcelo Lakes, a nice interior course that is very playable for all levels.

Our last day, as we were enjoying the ocean breezes out on the porch behind the Blue Marlin, we had the good fortune to meet Andres, the chef at Capriccio's and the Blue Marlin. What a great memory to leave with -- his sharing of his Paella recipe and a tasting also!

Of course, no resort is perfect and our only "complaints" were the limited wine list available in the all-inclusive and the lack of any water sport activities such as snorkeling, paddle boards, canoes, etc. If you want to stay active, definitely budget for some excursions.

Overall, I think the best recommendation anyone can give is that we would go back again.

Room Tip: In the main building, we were on the second floor which afforded better views of the ocean. The vil...
