Just returned from visit to Santo Domingo, Dom Rep and was shocked at the display
of animal cruelty especially in colonial city with homeless dogs wandering everywhere
eating scraps and are in obvious starvation mode. I am half dominican but I was shocked
that locals and in most particular the upper classes attitude that a dog does not merit
any humane treatment is widespread. What should have been a wonderful trip was a
heart wrenching experience. It would be a positive thing if foreign tourists would galvanize
the dominican peoples to promote animal neutering, open shelters and promote adoptions
and I for one would welcome and contribute financially to this. The Dom. Rep. must realize
that there are many islands in the Caribbean where animal abuse is not so acute and any
animal loving tourists would prefer to not spend their dollar there.
