“The best Quipe in the world”
Review of Shish Kabab

Shish Kabab
Ranked #1 of 51 Restaurants in La Romana
Certificate of Excellence
Description: Though specialising in Middle Eastern cuisine, Yolanda and Juan's menu have a range of local (Dominican) dishes. In fact if you speak to them beforehand, they will endeavour to cater for special requests. Their hospitality is excellent. Prices are reasonable. Seating is available indoors with air-con, and also a renovated outside terrace to watch the world go by. The recipes have been passed from generations and after 46 years, the restaurant continues to develop its menu and deliver an excellent mouth watering experience. Do not forget to try the dishes for which they are most known for, the Kipe and Catibias. The Kipe is a traditional arabic dish made out of bulgur wheat filled with meat and fried to perfection and the Catibia is their version of an empanada made out of yuca instead of flour and filled with a variety of options like meat, chicken, cheese, conch or a combination of these. They are amazing! Shish Kabab has now opened their second location on the Autopista del Coral, it's the highway that connects to the east coast of the island. Coming from Santo Domingo, it will be after the first toll, just before the second one next to the Gas Station Next. If you are coming directly from La Romana, it will be just before the first toll. The new location offers the same menu and has created a cozy, elegant and tropical ambiance that is perfect for a road trip stop for food and refreshments. Their natural juices are a must, in addition of course to the Kipes and Empanadas, which they are famous for. If you are traveling back home from the Punta Cana airport, this will definitely be the best goodbye meal of a lovely visit.

I LOVE the food. I go to Shish Kabab everytime i go to Casa de Campo. Everything is freshly prepared and tastes super good. Also the Chicken Kebab is wonderful. They have fried plantain chips, which i recommend as a side order with some ketchup. Enjoy!

“A La Romana favorite”
Reviewed November 4, 2011

For many years, my family and I have been coming to "Shish". We love the fact that either Juan or his wife Yolando are always there, greeting and overseeing their restaurant.
There is not a thing on their menu that is not good. I love the hummus, beef shish...my wife likes the tabbouleh, eggplant....my son likes their filets.
Our favorite waiter, Hector has also been there for many years, greeting us with his warm smile.
Also, during baseball season, you are guaranteed to see Juan cheering on the Toros del Este.

“If you want a nice meal, you will get it for a super price.”
Reviewed October 24, 2011

I often stay in La Romana and love to visit all kind of restaurants and there is a wide range of them.
This restaurant is one of the best I visited during my last stay in September 2011.
It was well filled and nearly all tables were occupied. With an army of five waiters in the restaurant and five more behind the bar and for sure a lot more in the kitchen, this is a busy place during lunch time. Service was fast and professional. Friendly staff.
Worth trying!!

“Shish Kabab - A taste of the Middle East and Rep. Dominicana all in one place”
Reviewed April 17, 2011

Juan and Yolanda's restaurant, originally founded 40+ years ago by his parents, Don Elias and Doña Ernestina, specialises in Middle Eastern cuisine, a snack like a 'quipe' (kebbeh), or a variety of 'kabab' dishes. However they also have a range of local Dominican fare like 'empanadas', 'La Bandera Dominicana' (meat, rice and beans), 'arroz con pollo' (rice with chicken) and also other international dishes, meats, poultry, seafood and fish.

It's a great place for just a snack or a complete meal. They even have a 'children's menu'. My daughter loves their 'niños envuelto' (cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and meat) and hummus with pitta. Their desserts and 'biscuits' are Middle Eastern and Dominican in origin. They even have two sorts, one mild and the other spicier, of home-made 'picante' (chilli sauce). If you want something not on the menu then they will try to cater for you (just ring ahead)…nothing is too much!

The food is always fresh, and the drinks are varied: their 'batidas', (fruit smoothies) with or w/o milk are wonderful . Prices are reasonable, especially compared to other local restaurants. Value for money. For those with limited Spanish, English is spoken…I prefer to practise 'mi lengua'.

They are open all day from around 10.30am til late evening, Tuesdays to Sundays. Except when there is a long national holiday weekend, when they open Mondays and close Tuesdays instead.

One thing to remember when dining out in the Dominican Republic, the prices are generally exclusive of 16% ITBIS (VAT/local tax) and the 10% service charge. Most establishments will add this on as standard. Ask beforehand, and you can adjust your 'tip' accordingly.

As an ex-pat, I've been living here for a few years, and many restaurants come and go, but Shish Kebab's food quality and personal service are always excellent.
