local bus took a group of 20.Firstly we went to Taino Indian Cave called locally Cuevas de las Maravillas.Once inhabited by Taino Indians, who etched pictographs on the walls. The remarkable rock formations are all illuminated.Check beforehand that the lift is working as it is very steep wooden ladder to return to the top.Excellent amber jewellery available nearby.Next stop at cigar factory owned by Cubans.can view 3 males 3 females working in pairs making exclusive cigars.Very large shop with numerous cigar brands.

We toured the large factory today and i would say it was definately worthwhile. It is quite amazing how much effort goes into a single handrolled premium cigar. The highlight was watching a master roller elegantly and efficiently wrap cigars for demonstration. The factory is much larger than you would expect with many more employees. Fascinating!

Logistically much is left to desire, as we had to take a taxi from Dreams La Romana to the La Matilde factory and then ride (in our same taxi) with the tour operator to the large factory, have our taxi wait for us during the tour, and then back to the small factory to drop the guide off. We also spent some time waiting for a factory rep/ chaperone which i don't see as necessary because our guide was clearly well versed in the rules and regulations of the factory.

Costs: $40+tip roundtrip taxi from Dreams
$20+tip/person tour
Cigars are not cheaper at this retail location.

For $10 or $15 you will learn all the process of a cigar, from selecting the part of the tobacco leaves that are mild or strong till the storage and ripen of the habano. It is worthwhile and interesting. There are also some workers that are rolling up cigars, and they will let you roll up one.
The store has a wide variety of cigars, really amazing. Here you can be sure that they are original cigars, made up of good tobacco. Prices are higher than at Calle 8 in Miami, so if you are looking just for good prices this is not the place. If you are staying at Punta Cana or Bayahibe don't miss this visit. You can go thorough this place when you drive to Altos de Chavon.

If you enjoy cigars you must visit this place. We learned the entire process to making a great cigar. They have a store at the end with pretty decent prices.

I booked a tour for a Tuesday when our ship was in port. We took a cab to the location and we were not allowed past the front gates by the guards. They told us it was only a distribution warehouse.
