Owner description: Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people.

For cruise passengers, don't take the ships tour. It only costs $7 round trip to go by yourself and it is very safe. The village was quaint and had many areas for some nice pictures. The cafe's were comfortable and the food/drink was reasonable...cheaper than the ship. My wife and I enjoyed the trip.

Take a golf cart ride to the quaint little village. Get a beer at the turn on Dye Four, take your bathing suit and swim in the pool overlooking the river. It is truly amazing.

This was part of a 2 part excursion purchased on a cruise ship. A re-created village with shops and restaurants. We didn't have but about an hour to see this place. Our guide was pitiful...all he wanted to do was tell us about Elton John singing at the open air amphitheater. We did eat at Onno's bar and Restaurant...good nachos and fine drinks. Maybe would have enjoyed it more if we had had more time there.

Our time at Altos de Chavon Village was the best part of our excursion. It is charming and picturesque. Great shopping. Many restaurants and bars.
