Owner description: Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people.

“A Dream Come true!”
Reviewed August 17, 2012

This place is like walking around in a wonderful dream... My wife and I had our dream come true when we had our wedding in Altos de Chavon.. The first time we visited this place we dreamt about getting married there and a few years later that dream came true. The view of the River Chavon is spectacular.. and the buildings is so realistic that it is hard to believe its not really an old village.. The neighboring Casa de Campo is equally spectacular... Altos de Chavon have been blessed with performances in the open air theater by great stars like Andrea Boccelli and were even the location for weddings of the Spanish royalty...and like I said it is a dream come true!!

“One of a kind”
Reviewed August 11, 2012

Altos de Chavon is a small artists village, magnificently constructed atop the banks of the Chavon river, inside the exclusive Casa de Campo enclave in La Romana. Once in Altos, you can walk through the cobblestoned streets admiring the architecture and eclectic feel of the village. There are bars, cafes, restaurants and a world class amphitheater that has hosted legendary musicians like Sting and Carlos Santana in the past few years. This is a very unique and special place in my opinion, even if there is nobody around (which is sometimes the case) there is a great ambiance and over all vibe. Check it out!

“Amazing views”
Reviewed August 3, 2012 via mobile

Very nice place and great views. The village is only 33 yrs old so nothing too old to appreciate but still worth seeing. The amphitheater is breath taking and so is the Chavon River.

“Sleepy little place!”

Very cute and so not Dominican! Stroll arond and you may find a gift shop or bar open. Very very quiet most of the time. Hard to get to we only visited because we were staying in Casa De campo.
