Owner description: Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people.

I have been in Altos de Chavon many times (when there was no admission fee). I can say that it is a nice destination for an early morning or late afternoon walk, as the heat and the sun are very unconfortable during the middle of the day. There is not much you can do in Altos de Chavon but walk, look at "replicas" of medieval time buildings, and eat pasta at overpriced restaurants. Casa de Campo, the exclusive resort tha operates Altos de Chavon, is trying to sell admissions to Altos de Chavon as a tourist attraction when in fact this is really like a shopping center with overpriced restaurants an souveniers shops. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. STAY AWAY FROM ALTOS DE CHAVON!!!!

“What a surprise-great little village!”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

Beautiful river views. The place is a quiet little enchantment. The church is so rural looking. The views of the Chavon river are amazing.

“Not Worth the Price”
Reviewed July 1, 2012

My niece is visiting from Seattle so we decided to take her to La Romana & Altos de Chavon for the afternoon. I visited Altos de Chavon about 6 years ago when we first moved to DR & remember it being interesting and quaint. We arrived at 3:00 - approximately 1 1/2 hours from the capital. We pull up to the Casa de Campo entrance and are told that a day pass is needed. I was surprised since a pass was not required the last time I visited (albeit 6 years ago). Imagine my further surprise when we go to get the pass and are told that the cost is $25/pp. There were 6 people in my party - meaning we would have to shell out $150 for the pleasure of walking around in the hot sun. Needless to say we were back in the capital by 4:45. Definitely not worth the price.

“El Fieston...Not That Good”
Reviewed July 1, 2012

We did the Isla Catalina excursion tour with El Fieston in August 2011 and it was not good at all. I know that the Dominican Republic is a Spanish speaking country but our tour guide spoke English for less that 25% of the trip. We had to ask questions to figure out what he was talking about and where we were going.

The bus ride was okay as we got to see different parts of the island and the boat ride we got to see the island coast, celebrity homes, and many landmarks.

The snorkeling was not the greatest and the area we had designated for swimming was very small and rough to swim in. The Banana boat had a huge line up and we did not get a chance to go on it.

The food was good. The whole trip lacked the island atmosphere, there was no music on the tour and it didn’t have the Caribbean feel to it.

We saw other boats that were pumping good music doing the similar excursion, we wished we would have gone with them.

Bring money for food and tips.
Bring a translator if you don't speak Spanish.

Would not do this excursion again.
