“Good Enough for Billionaires, Good Enough for Me”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

Casa de Campo has 7,000 acres of property and 20 billionaires -- yes, that's with a 'B,' folks -- own property here. The Kardashians vacationed here, Drake filmed his 'Started from the bottom now I'm here...' music video here, the Beebs has stayed here, etc., etc. It's an off-the-grid, serene and sanitized bubble to experience gorgeous Dominican Republic weather and get beachy. The hotel, meanwhile, is very reasonably priced and more for the "every day" normal traveler. If you're a golfer, Teeth of the Dog is ranked #34 in the world and #1 in Latin America, so that's a big draw. The one thing some people don't realize is that pretty much everything is man made, including the village, which looks like it's plucked right out of Europe. On one hand, that's really cool and impressive. On the other hand, that's why there are some limitations (like a smaller beach, per one reviewer's complaint). I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to visit the DR and just be stress-free and safe.

We just returned from Casa de Campo where we rented a beachside villa, La Brisa. Going in September was nice because it is low season and in most places we went, we were the only people there. Which is our preferred travel experience. But it is also HOT in September, so be prepared!

Our villa was amazing and beautiful. It sits on the 8th hole of Teeth of the Dog with gorgeous ocean and fairway views. We had a butler and 2 maids everyday who cooked wonderful meals as well as did our laundry daily. Our butler, Agapito made the best fruit smoothies on the planet everyday for afternoon snack! We loved them and felt as if they were part of our family by the end of our 10 day stay. None of us speak Spanish and their English was so so, but we did very well and learned from each other.

The villa came with 2 golf carts and a small car which were all used to get our group of 8 to the different activities we enjoyed daily. One of the nice things about Casa de Campo is that is offers so many things to do. Two in our group are avid golfers and said that the courses were gorgeous and challenging. This is definitely the place to go if you are a golfer for sure. We also had larger vans pick us up for off property excursions or dinners when we didn't want to take the golf carts.

But I am an avid shooter and I found their shooting center to be the best I've ever experienced. Hermo, our guide, was top notch. We shot trap and sporting clays 4 days while there. We were the only ones shooting which made it that much better. He helped improve my shot tremendously with easy to follow tips. The sporting clays course is outstanding. 250 stations! They were challenging and fun to shoot and unlike anything I've ever encountered. If you enjoy shooting sports, this is a must. Do not miss this! If you have never shot a gun in your life, but think you'd like to try, sign up for a lesson. Hermo had one of our friends shooting like a pro on her first outing! Everything is provided: gun, shooting vest and eye and ear protection.

The resort is beautiful, but if you are looking for a beach vacation, you might be disappointed. There is a beach which is very nice. Plenty of chairs and umbrellas. You can rent snorkel gear , kayaks etc if you can catch them when they are open. Apparently, during slow season that particular shack is not always open. The water is crystal clear and beautiful, but we didn't spend much time there.

Instead, we chartered a private boat for a day and went to Palmilla beach and Saona. Highly suggest you do this instead of taking a "cattle" boat to see either. And if you have someone in your group that speaks spanish that would really help. None of our crew spoke any english so it took a while explaining that we wanted a private experience, not to hang out with the 400 other people that were trying to see these 2 places. Personally, I would skip Palmilla. It's a pretty beach and sand bar. But because there are so many people that go there, the star fish are all but about gone and they are replaced with very loud crowds of people of multiple boats. Highly suggest Saona. It was beautiful and we docked just down from there on a private beach. Great snorkeling!

We could not have had such a good experience without our concierge, Walkiria. If we needed anything, we called her and it was done. Even coming up with a birthday cake on short notice that was out of this world!

Overall, it was a fantastic trip and we will absolutely be returning!

As other reviewers have mentioned, this resort is in a gated residential development. The grounds are HUGE! You have the option of all inclusive or not. We were only there for one night to celebrate my birthday. Regrettably it was a rainy afternoon when we arrived, but upon a mere mention of my birthday, a bottle of wine was sent to our room (nice touch!). We then took off in the included golf cart to explore the grounds. We spent the better part of three hours touring around looking at the beautiful homes (many owned by celebrities), visiting the marina, the local grocery store & shops.

We had dinner in the restaurant, used the gym, and ordered breakfast "in bed". All were exceptional. We did make it to the beach the next day for a few hours. We found it clean, with nice loungers, umbrellas & waiter service at our disposal.

We truly enjoyed our stay, and though very pricey, we'll be back.

It is a luxurious resort in the East side of Dominican Republic., Nestled in La Romana, it is more a golf and polo resort that a beach resort. They have their own private beach (called Minitas), but if you want to see better beaches go to Dominicus and Bayahibe (20 minutes away towards the east), or drive 35 minutes to the northeast to Punta CAna, Bavaro, where the beaches are amazing with white sand, and nice restaurants around.

The hotel is part of a very large gated residential development that includes many activities and generally a beautiful location. The hotel is far from the water and the rooms may have distant water views. The hotel portion (spread out over a large area) was renovated recently and while it was nice, it was NOT on par with other luxury 5 star resorts. Service was not adequate at times and language issues and training were probably the reason. Food was hit or miss (mostly miss) but there are many possible venues and locations to try and the variety was great. The breakfast is awful - we felt that we are in a factory, very disorganized, and food selection were not great at all. The pool is very nice and them giving you a golf cart to go to the different activities is wonderful as the kids had a wonderful time. There are a lot of things to do for kids and I recommend this hotel for that reason. This is a family destination and you see a lot of big groups of families and extended families vacationing together which is wonderful to see. You can also drive around with your golf cart and look at the various beautiful houses built within this residential development as many people who come to Casa de Campo rent houses rather than stay within the hotel (there are also other smaller hotels within the same development as well). I think the biggest disappointment we had was the pathetic so called beach and the lack of service at the beach. Needless to say after venturing out there (its not close to the hotel) we never went back again but overall this was a nice time for a family vacation even though it was by no means a 5 star luxury beach resort.

My family ended our latest Dominican Republic vacation at Casa de Campo. We had the all inclusive package at the hotel and took full advantage of the skeet shooting and had both kids riding horses everyday. The kids loved it. We used the golf driving range, toured the property on the hotel golf cart and even played ping pong and air hockey at the kids club. We loved the Il Cana restaurant next to the lobby where the staff were great and the food excellent. The beach was also a joy with crystal clear water and a restaurant right on the beach. This was not our first time there, but was the first doing an all inclusive and highly recommend it. Altos de Chavon on the property is a a great getaway with a different feel and the Marina is a good place to take a walk and look at the shops and all the boats. My family cannot stop talking about a wonderful time we had.
