Chichi and Papito were awesome tour guides we had a great time. Came back the next day for another round of fun (kids ages 10-15).

On our recent trip to Puerto Plata a few of us daring younger ones decided we'd do the Waterfall excursion because it just seemed like a great adventure. Boy were we right. Although we didn't do all 27 waterfalls, once we started the journey down the falls, we wished we had at least done 14 of them.

Let's review:

The ride to the waterfalls is beautiful, scenic, and culturally enriching. Once you're there you are greeted by friendly employees and you get suited up with your vest and helmet. From there you are paired with two young and fit men who will be escorting you during the adventure.

You are able to purchase a videographer for your excursion in case you want to remember the time you conquered your fears and jumped off a cliff. You're also able to purchase pictures/waterproof camera for the trip. Mind you, this is incredibly expensive in relative terms to buying a disposable waterproof camera, or just owning a waterproof camera.

It is recommended you wear watershoes for this excursion, though if you have flat feet like I do, watershoes may not be the best bet. If you have a pair of running shoes you don't mind parting with (or spending time drying) pack them and wear them. The hike up TO the waterfalls is beautiful and scenic but is laden with river rocks and can be hell to those of us with collapsed arches and mild back problems. I swear I thought I wouldn't make it TO the waterfalls with the amount of pain I was in. So definitely CONSIDER taking sneakers or something with arch support and proper soles.

HOWEVER, once you're at the falls, get ready for an experience you'll never forget. Forget the negative reviews because if you're smart (and sober) you'll be careful and rely on your guides because they're out to help you. Once you've survived your trek up to the falls the real fun begins. The guide preps you for each waterfall; telling you how you're going to climb them in the safest way possible. For someone like me who's swimming isn't too strong, their instructions were very helpful. From our experience, the guides were sweet and helpful, loved their jobs, and incredibly strong. Some of the falls include them boosting you up and being pulled the rest of the way by the second guide, they are careful and strong enough to get you up there so don't worry. As long as you listen to their instructions you'll be safe.

Going down the falls is the greatest rush in the world and if that doesn't invigorate you the fresh clear spring water will. After five days of being in the resort and feeling constantly dirty from salt water and sunscreen and sweat, it was so incredibly refreshing to dive into the clear water.

Few reminders:
- Take a waterproof camera/disposable waterproof camera
- Wear something with proper soles/waterproof/arch support/shoes you don't care about. You'll thank me later.
- Don't carry anything in your pockets unless your pockets have zippers (and preferably a velcro flap on top of that)
- Listen to and trust in the guides (they've been doing this for years, and they're able and strong)
- Let go of your fears and worries, don't think negatively.
- Be ready to conquer the limitations you've been placing on yourself.

At the last minute I decided to jump off the last waterfall (after sliding down it first) and I was so proud of myself for doing it.

A great experience and very safe. Make sure that there is enough water and also that there is not TOO much.

Be aware when it is the dry season it will be less spectacular, and if not a lot of water defiantly do not go all the way up unless you just want to walk down. One of the best sustainable projects I have ever seen. Nice job Peace Corps and Joe.
