“This is the place to stay in Playa Dorada”
Reviewed March 5, 2010

We can recommend this hotel without any reservation if you are looking for an elegant boutique hotel, and want to retreat for a few days. We reserved two ocean front rooms on the third floor. The rooms were spacious, well appointed, clean, comfortable and quiet (although most nights it is possible to hear a little noise coming from the neighboring hotels). We found all the staff to be very friendly (with one minor exception), and felt very welcome staying here.

You can have breakfast pretty much anywhere you like (on the beach, on the deck or patio, in your room), and it is excellent. The hotel restaurant, Lucia, is also good, although our impression was that the food is a little overrated, but the restaurant may be one of the best on the island. Service in the restaurant was excellent. A short walk (or ride courtesy of the hotel staff) gets you to another good restaurant, Al Fresco. We ate at Al Fresco three times. Our first experience was pretty bad with food not arriving, and we nearly did not return. However, even the hotel recommends this place, and the second two visits were most enjoyable.

There are several water sports available directly in front of the hotel, and a golf course within walking distance. A good trip is to take the cable car up the mountain and walk around the botanical gardens. It is worth paying for a guided tour so you fully appreciate the gardens.

Our experience nearly everywhere was very positive, and we found the locals to be friendly. One exception was a very bad experience when we went diving and snorkeling with Dressel Divers (based at the Iberostar resort). I cannot recommend this operation based on the treatment we received from the manager.

Puerto Plata is worth a quick visit, but definitely make time to visit Cabarete. It has a beautiful beach, restaurants on the beach, and some very nice stores for shopping. I think it was about a 40 minute drive.

A wonderful experience from check in to check out. The staff was friendly yet reserved. The architecture of the hotel is grand elegance and the rooms are up to par with the lobby. The rooftop pool is fabulous and gives one the sense of isolation even though other hotels are nearby. The beach area is private but the occasional vendor will wander up with their wares. The water is tranquil but not really conducive to snorkeling. The food is top notch, fine dining as its best. The menu is expensive especially by DR standards but less than any upscale restaurant in the US.

A great escape for couples, not a place to party. A very serene, sophisticated atmosphere. We plan on returning.

Top flight in all respects. I have been to the south of France, to Paris, to Rome, to St Barth to South Beach, so that is my frame of reference. The best of all worlds in a sophisticated, elegant boutique atmosphere. Facility, guest rooms and grounds are in a grand villa style and each is breathtaking and immaculately maintained. Hotel has an overall exclusive ambiance as it is at end of road with huge wrought iron gates, yet is relaxed in its attitude. Restaurant is as good as any Manhattan top tier, for dinner, for room service, for beach/pool munchies. Fitness center and spa unusually large and clean. Service is spectacular, from Basilia, to Edwin and Israel the concierges, to Manuel and the other porter/drivers, to the bartenders, to Ted at the Spa, to the wait staff to the beach service. No doubt about it, THE best in Puerto Plata, and you feel privileged to be staying there! (I have read complaints that the beach is not the MOST spectacular.....the beach is just fine; Puerto Plata does not have beautiful white sand and the beach is not enormous, but it is more than sufficiently beautiful, with fine sand and turquoise water leading into beautiful azure blue waters). Also, I have read that Restautant Aleph is a must...in fact, IT IS!

After years of looking for paradise, we finally found it! From the moment we arrived and were greeted so warmly by Johanna, for the entire week, we were treated royally. It is an understatement to say how beautiful the hotel is. The rooms are amazing. The bed was so comfortable, I wanted to take it home! Overall, the facilities are incredible. Maria takes care of you at poolside, and you never want for anything! The jacuzzi overlooking the water, is just unreal! The spa- best pedicure I ever had, and the massages were a slice of heaven! The food was as good as any restaurant I have ever been to, and living in New York, we have been to quite a few! From breakfast overlooking the ocean, or lunches poolside or on the beach,( even one of Manny's famous barbecues!) to dinner at the 5 star restaurant, we were always delighted by not just the food, but the ambience and service. The staff is exceedingly nice, and attentive. Always smiling. If you want to actaully leave the hotel, which becomes less desirable everyday, as you feel more and more ecstatic, there are excursions you can go on, and Cosme, Israel, or Johanna help to plan the perfect escape. I was happy to sit at the pool, or gorgeous beach, where I also was able to buy a beautiful bracelet from one of the friendly vendors on the beach. We never wanted to leave, and can't wait to go back!

Exactly what we were looking for right before the holidays. As you pull in thru the main gate you feel as if you've entered the estate of rockefeller or the former president of the Dominican Republic, it truly is gorgeous. The main lobby, which is where you'll find the main bar, Lucia, a five-star restaurant and I believe they said 8 master suites, is breathtaking. I sat at the bar a few times throughout our stay and had a drink while listening to live piano. The service was exceptional as everyone is friendly and there for you whenever you need anything. The other 40 or so suites are located on the beach, that is where we stayed. Beautiful large ocean view rooms with large balconies. Great for late afternoon reading, smoking cigars etc., very relaxing. Bathrooms are modern and extremely large with oversized tubs and separate standing shower. We really liked the bathrooms, the wall next to the tub was cut out so you could see thru to the bedroom area, excellent design. The roof top pool was only a few steps away from our room so it was perfect. There is a bar and full menu right off the pool along with 4 or 5 hot tubs. We lounged on the beach taking long walks in the morning and late afternoon. Ocean front dining was magnificent and extremely romantic. Theres a beautiful golf course only a 2 minute walk away. We also got great massages and spent several days in the steam rooms after a good workout. Great place overall, will come back again.

I was quite surprised at how much I loved the hotel and hotel room. It was clean, spacious, and beautiful. The cut out wall next to the bed, which allowed a view of the ample sized tub, was my favorite. (The only thing I was not fond of was the firm bed. I am used to a super plush style.)

We had an ocean view room on the third floor and I spent a lot of time lounging on our balcony looking at the beach and listening to the rolling tide.

The staff was exceptional. Offering a smile, a hello, and a 'may I help you" every time we passed. There were so many of them. Far more than the few guests who were also staying there at the time we were. I'd be surprised if there were 10 rooms full during our stay. (We only saw adults at the hotel. Everyone seeming to prefer their quiet privacy.)

The food was exceptional. We had breakfast downstairs the first day and both the eggs ad the plantain served with it were quite good. The second day, we were not as hungry and ordered a continental breakfast in our room. The fruit plate was ridiculously good! With the bread basket, jams, honey, fresh juice, and coffee, this became our breakfast of choice. We lunched on the pool deck a few times and our favorites were the goat stew and the creole jambalaya. The flan was good, too. But my favorite food was the wonderful high end restaurant downstairs. She had a lobster meal, which was very rich. I had the deer osso bucco, which was superb.

We hired a driver through the hotel and he drove us around one day wherever we requested. We felt safe and attended to at all times. He was friendly and capable and drove us to Puerto Plata town and Sosua beach, which we requested. When the day was over, we asked to go to a local Dominican restaurant, and he took us to EXACTLY what we were hoping for. Our day ended up being about the same price as it would have been for the two of us to take the Puerto Plata city tour, but with much more flexibilty.

We also enjoyed a couples massage and the sauna and a nice double shower at the spa.

All in all, this was a wonderful trip and a classy hotel, I am not sure I would have changed a thing, other than add some cush to the bed.
