Me and my boyfriend did this trip on our own- not part of a group/ excursion. You can do this as well in part of a city tour trip but we were only interested in the cable carts as we only wanted a morning trip in our own time.
We got a taxi for about $40 return and the cable cart cost $10 each. There are two cable carts it takes approx 10 mins to get to the top, so you may have to wait while these go up and come back.
When we arrived we were greeted by a man who told us a little history took a few photos then asked if we needed a tour guide for when we got to the top. He was very pleasant and helpful but be careful as they are just after your money, we politely said no but he did ask for money, so we felt we had to give a tip.
As we were quite early there was only one small family waiting to go up so we had plenty of room in the cart to walk around and get photos from each side. Amazing views, very high but felt safe!
At the top there is a little snack shop and a gift shop- the gift shop has the 'Christ redeemer statue' on top of it and there is opportunity for some good photos. But outside the gift shop were lots of men standing/sitting just waiting for you, asking/shouting for you to come in and buy something this wasn't very nice to be honest felt quite intimidating so we walked a long way round the shop to avoid going near the shop entrance!!
On the way down you just wait for a cart and jump on we had the cart to ourselves going down (as well as the cart operator) so going early is a bonus as the cart after us was completely packed!
Excellent views and a nice morning out, I would advise to do this it is a nice experience and worth the views. Take a camera!!
