It was a 5 hour drive from the Airport Punta Cana to the resort , arriving in the early hours had to haggle with reception as they had only got one room ready and we had booked 2 so a further wait until we were able to get to our rooms. Breakfast visit was not to bad but was pestered by the men in straw hats asking to take us to a free breakfast but we were all inclusive ?? kept asking for our room numbers and was told to push off I was on holiday did not want to buy an apartment or upgrade to VIP. Pool area was very nice with several pools and clean as was the surrounding area. went to go to the beach area but was told VIP's only can use this entrance to a posh bedded area but we found a way down to the beach via another entrance with beds and loungers with a spar pool. Food on the beach was nice but our men in straw hats were not far away. evening meals they have several themed restaurants which you have to book early to get a seat, Chinese, mexican, italian, brazilian, indian was closed. we found the food in the main buffet was better than the restaurants and they also did themed evenings which was good. drinks were free but very basic lower value spirits and beer. plenty of soft drinks and bottled water. Room should have had a mini bar in but it never materialised bed was king size and hard but clean room was serviced daily with fresh towels. Guift shop was ok but we found a better one in the next complex via the internal shuttle bus on the same site you were able to use the bar facilities in most other parts of the resort except the VIP area's. Security was tight lots of security guards walking about the resort checking arm bands, we had to walk every where as we did not have a golf buggy to drive the complex was not offer, so used the shuttle bus to get about. evening dress code was long pants and a shirt, several fights broke out between guests and locals as you found that the locals use the hotel during the weekend and think they own it was not pleasant, Staff were very smart and happy to help you apart from the Straw hats brigade. Staff eat in the buffet area my chance to get back at the straw hats went and sat at their table and asked them if they wanted to by a house in the UK, would not advise to go off site unless your driving its a bit rough in the shanty towns motor bikes everywhere and you take your life in your hands when driving thats another story. Nice break but would not go back.

The staff at the pool was exceptional. Made us feel so welcome and absolutely made the trip wonderful. From the first day, they called us by name and acknowledged us whenever/wherever they saw us. Pamela was friendly, fun and gave great classes. And Chespa and Blackie also exceeded our expectations. The hotel rooms could use some updating, but the resort grounds were well maintained and beautiful. Rooms were all convenient to everything on the resort.Very fun vacation spot.

Room Tip: Would have preferred 2nd floor balcony which offers more privacy than ground floor.

Well run for the most part, lots of pools and restaruants. Shuttle to take you from area to area. Some walking involved due to sheer size of resort. Buffet food is pretty much the same daily for all meals. If staying a week you have a choice of 3 upgraded restaurants to choose from but can check on cancellation list each morn after 9 am...highly recommend this approach. Beach area great, fair undertow in the water so watch the flags. Some wonderful tours offered, unless you are quite fit I would NOT recommend the waterfalls trip as it is extreme: involving an hr hike up a mountain and "crash helmet/Life Jacket slide down the 12 falls offered or you can jump. there are however some ladders on some of the areas to climb down...need to be sure-footed for sure. Gondola ride gives an amazing view of city and resort in the distance.

I went to this hotel understanding that for £20.83 per room per night all-inclusive we weren’t going to get the best! However, a few things were well below expectation of any professional hotel and I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you enjoy:

 Having email you send in advance of your visit asking for local knowledge, such as obtaining airport transfers, ignored until such time as you request your agent changes you away from this place because of their lack of reply. And when they finally reply to an agents prompt, all you’ll get is “we don’t offer that”. When we got to the hotel we were told by several staff that they knew of easy transfers to book!
 Being offered prostitutes at the bar by an associate of the animation team
 Being hounded numerous times every day by relentless hard-sales salesmen to buy a “membership plan” when you have already said “no” and “I have no intention of staying here ever again”. I don’t often resort to rudeness but even rudeness didn’t stop them mid-pitch!
 Being told your all-inclusive isn’t VIP so you can’t go there, you can’t do this, you can’t have that, in a condescending, rude manor. A simple “we’re sorry but this isn’t available during your stay” would be much more polite
 Having loud music pumped into your room from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
 Listening to builders at the block next to you from 7 a.m. to around 9 p.m. and then until midnight on Friday
 Listening to drunk/drugged guests shouting and fighting in room corridors in the middle of the night
 Being ignored when you ask for a drink from the bar staff you have not tipped yet

The hotel is not as clean as you would expect a five star to be, but then, it isn’t a five star and is adequately clean enough to stay in for seven nights if you are prepared to clean the shower before you use it. The cleaning staff has so much to do in one day, they cannot possibly do a thorough job and I feel sorry for the amount asked of them each day.

The same can be said of the room finish and furniture. It is not the best, then it is not a five star hotel. It was perfectly functioning and acceptable for a week.

Other reviewers have stated linen was dirty. I must have been lucky as my linen was clean. However, the pillows stank, so I simply didn’t use them.

The Tropical is one of a few complexes in a much larger, couple of mile, walled/gated complex. Security was everywhere but clearly didn’t stop some illegal activity as above. You could use certain of the other complex facilities (depending upon your VIP/Membership status) and we found some of the other bar/restaurants we could visit were less crowded and had less sales-men hanging around.

During our stay we visited most of the Speciality Restaurants. These were no better than the main buffet restaurants, with the Brazilian being the better and the Chinese being worse than the cheapest Chinese takeaway! The buffet restaurant at the Tropical is clean with sanitizer being given out to all guests and staff before they enter. The food was of a suitable quality for the price we paid per night; if I’d have been a Member who’d paid £1,000s for my membership I would be very upset.

Having spoken to management at the property during my stay, I can see the above is normal and what they consider is a good service! I dare say a tripadvisor reply along the lines of “Please rest assure that we take all reviews as an opportunity to detect possible shortcomings and chances for improvement.” which clearly doesn’t happen!

Dear guest,
First of all we thank you for choosing our hotel The Tropical for your holidays and for the time you took to share your review with the TripAdvisor community.
We have read carefully your comments and we will take note of your observations to evaluate how we can improve our services and operation. We assure you that we take any comments as a constructive criticism.
We truly appreciate your review and very much regret that you did not report the issue of being offered prostitutes while you were in house so that we could have taken proper actions right away. This kind of subjects are completely unacceptable and we wish we were informed in order to proceed immediately with the employee or the person that was violating the hotel rules.
We are very concerned about this and we kindly ask you if you could provide us more details of this subject (as day, hour and name of the bar) as well as your email address to get in touch with you and for we can start an internal investigation. Please be advised that this is an unusual situation in our hotel, and we want to implement corrective measures immediately so this will not happen again in the future.
Thank you for your help and once again we apologize for the inconveniences that you may have experienced.
With best regards,
