Hello Travellers, My wife and I stayed in this Hotel for a week. We had Great time. Amazing staff. Food was amazing, lot of choices to pick from. Very large buffet and not so crowded. They had entertainment every evening, Micheal Jackson Show, Magic show and musical show. People are very friendly and its a safe place to travel. Only thing i was disappointed with was the room , it was kind of scary and bed sheets weren't that clean. I guess that what you get for your money. But i'll go again for sure.

I want to begin this review by saying that our family of four (children aged 12 and 9) would normally come in and out of a hotel or resort without one issue or concern. We can overlook mistakes or situations beyond the control of the hotel and we are patient and polite and understanding.

Having said all of that...what we encountered at the Riu Bachata was the worst example of a well-respected hotel chain selling out to make a quick profit by opening their doors to the locals. As other reviewers have said, it is their country so you have to deal with it. In any of our tours off the resort the people of DR were pleasant and genuinely a delight to meet. However, you put them in an all inclusive resort and one would think they have never seen food or drink before. The adult behaviour was bad enough, but the behaviour of the unattended children made for a miserable experience in the pool, the restaurants, the entertainment stage and in the hallways of the unit we were staying in. The Riu Bachata does NOT offer anything close to a 4 or 5 star experience due to their marketing to locals. If you have not experienced it you cannot fathom what it is like from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon.

Thank goodness the manager of the hotel opened a third pool during our stay that also offered a limited buffet for lunch. We were told personally at our dinner table on Friday night that this area would be for "internationals only". CLEARLY the management knows that the main pools and buffets are unbearable. This third option was relaxing, but I was left wondering why someone staying for a week had to walk the entire length of the complex to be able to sit without having someone jumping over them or stealing their belongings.

The manager (Fredrick I believe) worked his tail off to keep things under control but there were no other security staff even trying to tone down the rude behaviour.

We have stayed as a couple in a Riu in Mexico and Aruba. We THOUGHT this would be a family friendly trip where our kids could relax and have fun so we decided to make it a family holiday. It was not a great experience for us as a family and other guests told us to watch our NINE YEAR OLD daughter because their young daughters were accosted. The kids club was non-existent and the behaviour of the children in the main pool was enough to intimidate even the most courageous of kids.

In short, if you have to do Puerto Plata do NOT stay at either Riu. I went into this with an open mind and forewarned about the local invasion, but nothing could prepare our family for what we saw. It is literally spring break every weekend...except here the spring break adults leave their kids to run wild while they drink. We are no longer loyal Riu customers.

I have had to think long and hard before writing this review – the Bachata (and its sister hotel the Merengue) is obviously a pretty emotive topic for a lot of people at the moment and I want to try and separate the facts of the matter from my anger at my holiday experience.

The truth is the Bachata is a beautiful resort. It is well cared for by the hard-working staff and the rooms and of a high standard. The facilities are great and the beach is beautiful. The food (when available – more later) was also decent quality. But above all the staff that we met were all fantastic and very eager to help.

However, our holiday experience at the Bachata was miserable from start to finish. Our first snag occurred just as we arrived at the resort – after our long and uncomfortable journey we were told that our room was not ready. It was over 2 hours before we could get access to our room. Our room as I have mentioned was not too bad at all – comfy beds, good bathroom with powerful shower and cleaned every day by attentive maids.

Our arrival day was Sunday and the resort was packed. We were not overly concerned about this as we had read that the place is filled with local holidaymakers at the weekend and assumed that it would be better by the following day. It wasn’t. We awoke on our first full day eager to get some breakfast and get to the pool. Well we couldn’t get a table for breakfast and the pool was already full of about 200 people (no exaggeration). As the day progressed the pool became even fuller and there was zero chance of getting to the pool bar to be served. Lunchtimes were a nightmare every day with queues of up to 30 minutes to get food and the food often taken from in front of you by someone pushing-in. People were taking whole pizzas from the service plates and would think nothing of reaching over you to serve themselves as you were reaching for some food. On my first day I was pushed and shoved beyond belief. On my second day I had my dinner knocked out of my hand by someone pushing in line. They just laughed.

We took refuge at the Merengue for the first few days as we were unable to enjoy any time at the Bachata but by day 3 even the Merenegue was crowded to an extent that you could not get served at the restaurant or snack bar. So back to the Bachata and we now found that there were actually no tables left to sit at in the restaurant at dinner. Food options were massively restricted as people were taking it faster than it could be served.

The evening entertainment was not too bad but it was almost impossible to get a seat unless you arrived several hours early. The main bar was rammed with people and we witnessed people spitting ice back in to the ice buckets, filling plastic bottles with alcohol (obviously to take home) and the regular pushing in front of other guests.

We never saw the bicycle man serving drinks, never had waiter service by the pool or beach (as previous reviewers have mentioned) and certainly never saw special lunches being served by the pool (paellas, etc). The staff were simply too busy with the volume of guests to do anything other than provide a basic service.

By day 4 the experience got too much for us and we made our first complaint to the Thomson/First Choice Rep. We had been woken the night before by drunken local holidaymakers shouting outside the room and banging on the door. We were hungry, tired and stressed with being unable to find any peace and quiet anywhere in the resort. The Rep was basically unable to do anything to help us. We filled in a standard complaint form and were offered a fiver a day for our inconvenience. I explained that I wanted to move but this request fell on deaf ears.

By day 5 the situation had reached breaking point. I was getting absolutely no enjoyment from the holiday and we had again been kept awake at night. It was clear that the influx of local holidaymakers was not simply at the weekend – it was going to be for the full 2 weeks of our holiday. Staff were beginning to apologise to us for the behaviour of other guests and clearly felt embarrassed about the situation. One of the staff in the shop told me that it was the busiest she had ever seen the resort and it was due to get busier. She said that she didn’t know how they had fitted so many people in to the hotel (watching families of 6 take their own mattresses to their rooms may help explain this). I again complained to the Thomson/First Choice Rep and insisted on being moved. This time my request was met and we left the Bachata later that day (albeit to a lower rated hotel).

We have stayed in accommodation all over the world with star ratings from the full spectrum. Never before have I had such an experience. The hotel was lovely but it was like it had been thrown upside down and the result was chaos. Our holiday was essentially ruined by management deciding it would be a good strategy to fill the resort by offering cheap deals to local holidaymakers. It was Butlins in the Caribbean and certainly not what we had paid for or anticipated from our “4 Star Plus Platinum holiday”. Thomsons/First Choice need to stop sending holidaymakers to this resort until the problems have been solved. It is simply not fair for people to have to pay for this treatment.

Stunning beaches, good quality food and great drinks. Buffet food was to a good standard, and the Italian restaurant was great. Food was only let down by the steak house, I've never had such poor quality meat. There was a very good choice of drinks including brand named spirits. The animation team were great fun and brilliant entertainment. Was worried after reading some of the reviews on here about the locals, but I didn't find this to be a problem at all. Pools and beaches were kept spotless. For the price of the holiday it was fantastic value for money. All in all, had a great trip and would definitely recommend this hotel.

Just arrived back from staying at the Riu Bachata, or more to the the point the Riu complex (bachata and merengue). The hotel itself is very good however, didn't really get to experience it as its swamped with locals not only at the weekend but during the week, reasons given for this were lacking. Complaints were common, but responses varied, but predominantly "out of our control" was used as the reason. Locals were expected as i had read reviews, but this was extreme, the staff could not cope with the onslaught in the dining hall, queues were massive and not adhered to by many. The pool was rammed with kids splashing everyone, and free sunbeds were hard to find. Beach is nice, windy, probably asked 3-5 times for hair braids or massage, or photos. Food was good for an all inclusive but again the likelihood of getting their first are minimal. Entertainment, not bad, not professional, it went for the more comical route which was good but repetitive. Again however getting a seat, not a chance, so busy people were grabbing chairs and sitting all over the place, it just didn't work, to try and get a quieter dinner, you would go later, which meant losing out on entertainment and drinks in the evening, go back and watch some tele and chill, nope the tv channels were out of action for a total of 3 days, reason given, "people supplying it having problems". Overall at this time don't go, not enjoyable, I will be complaining to Thomson, as a platinum experience this most certainly is not. I believe many will be complaining as the reps continually apologised for the problems the hotel was having, apologies don't really help for a 2300+ holiday

Having come back from the Dominican recently I have to write a review about the hotel Bachata
The hotel good staff exallent rooms clean beach and food good .Till the invasion of the locals who get cheap rate weekends when they hit the Bachata you cannot get in the Dining areas or the bars swimming pool is a no go area . I cannot see how this is a platinum holiday as you have three days of hassle this was our 5th time in the Dominican we will not return . the staff all they could do was say sorry but sorry was not enough.
