“Frustrating experience”

We booked the VIP travel services with a vacation package to Dreams La Romana, Bayahide. On the VIP voucher it said "Look for a VIP Travel Services airport representative holding a welcome sign." There was no representative with a sign when we left the baggage claim area, but we found the guy in a short while. A day before leaving the resort, we made a reservation for 2:15 pm the next day for the pick up so we can make it in time for our flight (the hotel was about an hour and a half away from the Santo Domingo airport). At 2:25 pm we called to check where the shuttle is, and we were told it will be there in 5 minutes. Another 35 minutes passed and there was no VIP shuttle. Luckily there was another company's shuttle that came to pick up some other guests, so we got a ride with them and made it to the flight on time. This was a very frustrating experience.

Through Bookit.com we got VIP travel services from the airport to our hotel. They were professional and prompt both when we arrived and when we left. On our second morning we met with their representative, Jason, who gave us some great advice on our stay and also gave us information on excursions. We chose just to hang at the resort but we appreciated Jayson's non-pushy manner in trying to sell us stuff. We also appreciated his offer of help in case we needed medical care or had any questions. The next time we visit the Dominican Republic, we will definitely use VIP Travel Services and hope that Jayson is still there.

We did the trip over to Maimon and Baja Hondo Area. The harrowing drive through Puerto Plata was quite an adventure in itself! Very interesting trip. Saw a public school, went horse back riding and boogie boarding in the surf. Also saw a typical rural home/farm and a cigar maker. The lunch was excellent and they had lots of drinks available including rum. The only draw back was the decrepit road we were on. The potholes were so bad that our butts got slammed over an hour each way! The bus/truck we were in was in dire need of new suspension. If you can overlook the rough ride it was a good day and a good value.

This was a nice day away from the resort. Very interesting but somewhat difficult to believe. . . The school kids love to get candy and treats from the tourists, but 3 buses a day 6 days per week come through, so they do get lots. One child was given pencil crayons, but I noticed about 10 minutes later that he had broke all the lead points off them.

The working farm was intersting, but if you look around the neighbourhood, other homes are made of block. I am sure some people do live like this, but once again, 3 bus loads per day, 6 days per week of tourists buying their goods. . . still it was very interesting.

The horse back riding was nice. It was about a 20 min ride. . . the horses really knew the route and were in no hurry. They took their time even when I tried to get them to go faster.

The cigar factory was interesting as well, but once again it seemed like they were they to entertain the tourist. It certainly didn't look like they made a great amount of cigars at that location.

The lunch that was provided was very tasty. They had lots of alcohol offered throughout the day.

Overall this was a nice day out. . . not too expensive. Our guide, Oscar, was very entertaining, he really made the whole day!!

Be prepared for outhouses. . . there are no flush toilets available for use on this tour.
