“Anybody who complains is a whiner”
Reviewed February 8, 2014

Great staff, awesome beach, the food is plentiful and excellent, we went from Jan 25 - Feb 1 and meet lots of great Canadians. Didnt have anybody hassle us as other reviews say. Rooms are clean and well furnished we stayed in building #9 with an ocean view. Lots of good booze. Pool was clean and nice. The review by trailblazer is spot on. If you notice the only people complaining are from Europe and the UK, the also act like snobs at the resort, I think they have a complex!! Oh and the A La Cartes are amazing and the buffet is fantastic. The staff is very friendly!!

I am from London, Ontario Canada. Just returned home from a one week vacation at the Be Live Grand Marien. Jan 28-Feb 4 Having travelled to a lot of hotels in the Caribbean there was something different about this place. I found the staff very friendly and accommodating from the minute you check in till the minute you leave. It is a smaller sized resort and that aspect I really liked, having stayed at larger ones in the past. I liked the pool. The food was good, the Mexican, Gourmet, and Brazilian restaurants were all excellent and the waiters and waitresses were all very professional. My friends and I stayed in standard rooms and I had every intention of up grading if I felt that the room was not to my liking, but it was fine, better than I anticipated and we all got an ocean view. The Hotel is not new by any means and yes there were a few " Tired" aspects but it was clean and well maintained. If your picky and expect a 5 star place, then this place might not be for you. For what we paid, I thought it was exceptional value. There is a shortage of Lounge Chairs on the beach and pool area that needs to be addressed. So any bad reviews you read about this place is from Picky Cheap O's that need to get off their wallets and go stay somewhere else!

Spent one week in this resort and loved it!!!
Great hotel, clean rooms with coffee machine, mini fridge and TV, friendly staff, great entertainment both during the day and night and EXCELLENT beach and good music at the disco in the resort.
The food was ok at the buffett, but we loved the fish at the beach restaurant!!! The a-la-carte restaurants were good with tasty foods.
What made this vacation very memorable the entertainment staff: Kujikuji, SexyBelly and Mr."Denzel Washington". They were the ideal team who involved all the stuff, from young to teens and adults, they knew most of the guest by first name and they were always kind and helpful.
We had a really great time and probably we will go back soon.

Room Tip: Just ask... :) We were traveling with two teens and wanted a joint room and we got it! Leave you...

Spent 2 weeks at the Be Live Grand Marien in early January and had a wonderful holiday. We were in building 8 and found it close to everything but still very quiet. Staying for 2 weeks we did upgrade our room and found it very spacious. The lady who took care of our our room on the 3rd floor was there every morning and did a thorough job of cleaning, keeping the fridge stocked and extra water.

The grounds are beautiful and well taken care of.

The buffet to us was one of the better buffets that we have seen over the years. The food was hot even some of the serving vessels were bubbling. A good variety that could satisfy anyone.

We did the a la carte restaurants and enjoyed all of them

The servers in the buffet and a la carte restaurants were some of the friendliest and happy servers that we have come across. We noticed that they actually seemed happy not only with the guests but amongst themselves. Nice atmosphere.

We had not been to Puerto Plata for many years and were happy that we came back. The beach was beautiful and you could walk for hours.

I'm just back two days now, and the memories of our stay at Be Live Gran Marien Puerto Plata are still fresh in my mind, all great memories, no negatives. Well one area maybe they may want to consider adding some music at the pool area. Other than that? what a great place.
Reception was smooth, welcome cocktail at reception, bell hop took care of any luggage to the room, and a driver in a golf cart took us to our room and offered a brief description of the property as we rode in the cart.
The room was exactly as in the pictures and as descibed on the website. Clean, functional with mini fridge with 2 cold beers, 2 pop, and two bottles of water. I was upgraded to a ocean view standard room as they were full at the time of arrival at 11pm. Great beach view from the balcony or terrace as I was on the ground floor, 300 block. The bathroom was ok, ya it could be updated a bit but was functional and good size. Lots of towels too. We made ourselves to the snack bar just outside our building for a few cocktails and a snack before doing a walk around to view the resort. Looked all good so far, even after the 4 hr flight and 1/2 hr commute to the resort from the airport.
During our 7 day stay, we ate at all 3 a la carte resteraunts and also the main grand buffet. The a la carte places, you have to book for a table as they are limited in seating for two seatings per night. One at 630 and the other at 7pm. No problem getting a seating after booking in the lobby, as long as you are there by 10am. After that time, well you take the left over seating if any or missed out that night, but can book for tomorrow night. No line ups outside the door as some have complained about. And all three a la carte's were fantastic. The service everywhere in the resort is 5 star for sure. The staff, all the staff, from the guy on the kick rake in the gardens, the bartenders, to the cleaning staff, to the security officers in the resort were all helpful, friendly, and very good to talk to. Always a friendly smile and a Olah, (hello) whenever they pass by you. They make you feel welcome and safe, wherever you are in the resort and at whatever time too. Cleaning the rooms start at 10am or so and go to about 4pm, whereever your room fits in that schedule. So it may be early or late. If you want to be a room person or sleep til noon, then put the card on the door. But really why you want to be a room fly? Get out and enjoy. TV was limited, lots of channels, and maybe 5 in American. I did catch what I wanted at night on the tv.
The Grand Buffet had a lot of regular staple foods, you know the rices, the veggies, the cheeses, etc. But also every night, the theme was different. Maybe Mexican one night, and another night was Italian, Mediterian, European night....you get the idea I hope...themes with the foods prepared to match the theme. I never heard one complaint about cold food or blah tasting. There are a few la dee daa people there, you know the type..... the ones in middle class 358 days of the year, but for the 7 days they are here, they are the ones thinking they are the Queen's relatives and expect the moon, for lack of describing them. The Dominican people do the best they can, for the various nationalities there.
And having saying that, a lot of German, Russian, Swiss,French people there..... but then again, a lot of Canadians there. The US? Not so many. The age group varies of the people there. Children as a rule are all behaved, but some of the parents need some help with their behaviour allowing their children to run around unsupervised. U know the type.. The casino is a bit of a joke as half of their machines were out dated and not working. But if you want a Las Vegas Casino? then go to Las Vegas, not Dominica
The safety box is $3.00 a day, yep.... u have to pay it if you want it. Don't want to pay it? great, but don't complain. It is what it is. I got one for my wallet, papers and stuff important to me. But seriously, after being there.... it is not a problem with their staff.
Hope that helps you decide. My wife and I had a great time!

Room Tip: they are all good.

This is my second time at the be live marien .Ive been going to the dominican for the last 20 years stayed in everything from a 5 star to a 3 star. For the money you cant beat it the food is excellent, it s clean, the beach is nice, the staff is freindly. If you are looking for superior extreme service hotel this is not the place for you, we had a few bumps in the road our phone didnt work, one day we didnt have hot water, but who cares for 2 grand for 8 nights its awsome. We upgraded to a superior room which i suggest as it is more comfortable than a regular room which i stayed in 2 years ago. If you are an american dont expect to make to many freinds as most of the patrons dont speak english. As far as entertainment dont expect much most of the stage shows are the same, years of going to these things the only one that was distinguishable was a michael jackson show at dreams in punta the rest are all the same.

Golf- We played golf twice at the dorado golf course, its a pretty nice course, everything is seperate there, green fees, cart, caddie fees, and caddie tip. we played twilight two times and it cost about 120 bucks with a 20 dollar caddie tip, You dont need a caddie of course but it just part of the program, were on vacation so we just went with the flow.

This wasn't a planned trip as this was the second resort we stayed at in two weeks given my girlfriends passport was stolen at our first resort. So we had to stay here for 6 days until the temporary travel document was sent.
Overall great place, we got to the resort late at night and given our 6 days there did not start until noon the next day and explained our situation. The resort kindly gave us a 50% discount for that night with no problems at all and even upgraded us to a supreme room for our stay. The a la carts are great but you have to reserve them at 9am in the morning if you want to be put on the list. Other than that the service was excellent, the staff was kind, friendly and extremely helpful. There is one huge pool which looked amazing. The restaurants were great and the beach was clear (no rocks) and fairly warm. Excellent place!
